Telstra and Netflix - Speed Index Position

Recently, Netflix Australia released some results around speed tests conducted on Australian ISP networks. This snapshot is a measure of prime time performance for Netflix on each particular ISP.
These results do show that we are delivering a more than reasonable video experience during these peak viewing times, providing over 2Mbps on average across a vast and extensive network area. The factors that can influence this national average include the larger size of the Telstra network over a wider ADSL footprint and customer base. This means that we do service a greater number of customers who are further away from exchanges.
Most importantly, our customers are telling us how we are performing and so far they are telling us that they are able to enjoy the full range of services that we run over our networks, including streaming video.
Are the Netflix results indicative of the general streaming experience your customers can expect?
The Netflix results provide an averaged snapshot of the streaming speeds achieved by customers right across our network footprint on their content during their busiest streaming periods.
There are many factors which affect performance including network configuration, the number of people using a connection and a customer’s equipment and software. It is important to note that the speeds indicated (>2Mbps) are more than sufficient for acceptable viewing experiences on large screen televisions.
We know that our network is more than capable of offering most customers a great streaming experience. For instance, our HFC cable broadband product is rated “HD” quality by the Google Video Index.
Are you throttling Netflix?
No we are not throttling Netflix.
You say you have superior networks, does that mean all Telstra customers will be able to use streaming services and enjoy a great experience?
No. Streaming services rely on the broadband connection and due to the large and diverse coverage of our networks some services will receive very high speeds when running on our Cable, Optical and some ADSL networks that are closer to the exchange, whilst others may be located in more remote areas or more distant from the exchange which limits the available speed to these customers.
For those customers in areas where speeds are limited most video streaming services are able to adjust the video to a lower rate and still deliver an acceptable video experience.
Why don’t you upgrade your networks now so everyone can enjoy streaming?
Whilst we continue to invest in our network some areas are set to transition to NBN and are not suited to changes ahead of that transition. Under NBN the architecture of the network will involve shorter copper lengths which will deliver speeds more suitable for video streaming and other high bandwidth activities.

It's not a copout.
Can you watch Netflix using T-Box? No.
Can you watch Netflix on FetchTV from competitors? Yes.
So the default box that Telstra customers tend to have doesn't support Netflix, so of course they are going to watch it via other means. They are also more likely to be less-savvy customers, meaning they won't use more complex setups to access the content.
If Telstra's box doesn't provide a way to watch Netflix then I'm not sure how that helps your case. "Their speed is bad but it's only because their box is bad too!". Also, "default box that Telstra customers tend to have" seems like a big assumption to me. How many have they actually shipped? Not very many I'm willing to bet. Don't the vast majority of Netflix users watch via desktop computer/tablet/smartphone? Kalak wrote:
In addition to this who do you think is the primary provider in rural and regional areas? Areas that tend to have less backhaul and longer average line lengths to the exchange resulting in slower overall average sync speeds across a customer base? That's right, Telstra.Rural and regional areas where very few people live, you mean? If you are seriously arguing that the small number of people in these areas are moving the needle so much that the purported market leader suddenly, and totally understandably, ends up coming in dead last each month, then there might be no limit to what you can defend. Kudos.

    It's funny because they are planning to move HD content to 5.5Mbps. Good for me but bad for the majority.

  • Why does the content spill over and how do I position this under the menu and title?

    I was following this tutorial on how to add a scrolling image gallery to a Flash website.
    (http://www.republicofcode.com/tutorials/flash/xmlimagegallery/index.php)
    From what I understand from this tutorial, it is just a matter of copying the Actionscript code and pasting it onto the timelines then making modifications on the XML.
    (kindly see a screenshot of timeline layers I made and as to where I put the Actionscript code:
    http://i429.photobucket.com/albums/qq19/tsujzpie/imagegalleryproblem_01.jpg )
    I pasted the code onto the blank keyframe labeled "Gallery"...
    But all I get is this weird effect when I click on the button for the gallery...
    (kindly see a screenshot of it here: http://i429.photobucket.com/albums/qq19/tsujzpie/imagegalleryproblem_02.jpg )
    When you put a blank keyframe on a timeline, any content put in there is supposed to only be contained in that very frame, right? How come then that - whenever the gallery button is clicked on - the content from that section spills out onto the other sections even when I click on other button for the other areas?
    I just really couldn't think why this is happening - any reason why this is so?
    And how do I position the gallery right under the section header and menu bar?
    Here is its AS2 code, by the way:

                                            container_mc._y = mask_mc._y-(container_mc._height-          mask_mc._height);

    You should create a manually movieclip symbol with nothing in it and take a copy of it from the library and place it in the frame where you intend for the gallery to display.  Give it an instance name of "container_mc" and remove the following line from your callThumbs function
    _root.createEmptyMovieClip("container_mc",_root.getNextHigh estDepth());
    You probably need to do the same for the mask and the full images since they appear to also be created using dynamic mc's.

  • String.replace(/re/, replFN) does not count the index position properly for unicode characters

    Hello!
    In my project, I want to find emoticons in text and append them to a text flow as images. I use regular expression and with English alphabet, all works fine, but when I enter text in other languages, every letter gets counted twice:
    var re:RegExp = /:\)/g;
    var textEng:String = "Hello, :)";
    var textRu:String = "Привет :)";
    textEng.replace(re, replFN); // index is 7
    textRu.replace(re, replFN); // index is 13
    function replFN():String{
      var a:Array = arguments;
      trace(arguments[1]); //The index position in the string where the match begins.
      return arguments[0];
    Obviously it's a bug, and the workaround is to use textRu.indexOf(arguments[0]), and keep some lastIndex:int variable when iterating over many matches of the string. But do I need to report it on Jira?
    privatevar lastIndex:int = 0;
    private function replFN():String{
      var a:Array = arguments;
      var textToAdd:String = textRu.slice(lastIndex,textRu.indexOf(arguments[0]));
      trace(textToAdd);
      lastIndex = textRu.indexOf(arguments[0]) + arguments[0].length;
      trace(arguments[0]);
      return arguments[0];
    Thanks.

    Dear @kglad
    Could you now please match this regex:
    var re:RegExp = new RegExp("(http|ftp|https):\/\/[\\w\\-_]+(\\.[\\w\\-_]+)+([\\w\\-\\.,@?^=%&:\/~\\+#]*[\\w\\-\\@?^=%&\/~\\+#])?", "g");
    in this string:
    "Hello! Photos can be found here: http://flicks.yahoo.com/photo and search is available here: http://yahoo.com/seach.jsp?ref=email&query=welcome%20back"
    using your method.
    Looking forward to a reply from certified expert.

  • Why does Telstra slow uploads speed down

    I have had ongoing issues with my internet connection over the last 18 mouths.Having a upload speed of 450/650 Kbps  very slow no good for gaming an down load of 8/11Mbps down load if more than I needTo the point I have spent good dollars try to insuring   that the infrastructures and the Asset Integrity with in house are in best condition this includes the replacement and work listed belowReplacement of the Wi-Fi system to a Cat.6 cabling at a cost of $2,300Replacement of the modem with a high speed 1G port modem at cost of $ 475Replacement of the fly-lead for the Telstra house connection to the new wall socket a cost of $360Total cost of $3135 this spend was braced on Telstra recommendation as the problem was with my part of the connection after a large number of call to my internet provider I at last had a appointment with a Telstra Tec to carry line testing and fault finding .At this point if no fault was found  I was the be billed at $60 per 15min or part off and travel cost as I live in Bullsbrook WA this may I high . Lucky for me a fault was found in the exchange and reconfigured and the speed and the Exchange improved   to 22Mbps down and 15 Mbps up an outstanding numbers >test at the house 15Mbps and so 5 / 7 Mbps loss for the Exchange to house don’t to good but still very happy with it BUT the upload was 650 kbps /750Kbps and please remember this testing was carry out by Telstra with good equipment so at this point I ask why the upload was so slow? After spending over $2000 and lot of time on the phone only to be told that Telstra slow the upload speed down so the max you can get is 1 Mbps and the only way you can increase this is by paying for a business line but you still may not get any more than 1MbpsThis is only a very small part of the story SO I LIKE TO ASK WHY IS TELSTRA SLOWING ME DOWNIf you like to know more please let me know

    Hi bigdave618,
    The simple answer is, that's the way the system and hardware is designed, all ISP's are the same. Uploads are limited to around 1Mbps. If you wish to get higher upload speeds you can see if Cable Broadband or NBN are available in your area as these systems allow for higher upload speeds.
    Upload speeds are generally slower than download speeds because of the fact that most internet connected equipment is asymmetric. Asymmetric means that any one packet of data can either go in, or out, but not both ways at the same time. Since most internet users are receiving more data than sending, the internet connected equipment has shifted the higher majority of the signals to go toward downloading.
    If you wish to find out more about ADSL I have added a link to a Wikipedia article below along with the link to the NBN and Telstra websites so you can check to see if Cable Broadband or NBN is available in your area.
    ADSL Wiki article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asymmetric_digital_subscriber_line
    Check for available Telstra Cable Broadband: https://www.telstra.com.au/broadband/home-broadband
    Check to see if NBN is available in your area:  http://www.nbnco.com.au/connect-home-or-business/check-your-address.html

  • HT1725 I rented an iTunes movie Prometheus on Sunday over AppleTV and it kep sottping after a minute or so and spinning trying to buffer.   I tried everything same thing 5 times and then I gave up 5 minutes into the movie.  My Apple TV and Netflix Movies

    What am I doing wrong?   I have hi-speed cable internet and N wireless WiFi.
    AppleTV and Netflix movies and TV work great - not buffering at all???

    There's an issue currently that a lot of us are experiencing in that we all get the error message "iTunes is currently unavailable; please try later"
    It's an issue with Apple and we're awaiting an update re this
    I've posted a topic in regards to this after having a long conversation with Apple support this morning and will be receiving a call from their tech team tomorrow to run through it further
    As it stands iTunes cannot be accessed via ATV's and nor can it be streamed via AirPlay from iTunes to the ATV
    However I can access all films/iCloud content via my Mac Mini with no issues!

  • Estimate time to enable all constraints and create all indexes

    Hi,
    To prepare a project to export/import for a whole database,
    How can I estimate time required to enable all constraints and create all indexes
    * Assume one full table scan per one FK constraint
    * Assume one full table scan plus one sort/merge operation per one index
    * Check it out whether we can use parallel DDL feature to speed up enabling of FK constraints
    how can I use core schema (which will be exp/imp) in the production db to get needed metric for the calcualtion?
    thanks
    Jerry

    There is no definative way to find the time it takes to enable a constraint / create a Index
    It toatally depends on the Size of the table / execution plan / resources available (In terms of CPU and Physical Memory ) /
    Amount of Temporary tablespace

  • Will reorg of tables and reindex of indexes help ? And How?

    Suddenly users told that one of their applications has become very slow. They identified millions of history data also, which they deleted . But still it did not help. Should we go for reorg of tables and reindex of indexes? Will this at all help ? Will this help to gain space ? or It will help in speed ? How should I do it ?
    Reorg tables
    1. First take export dmp of all the tables of that particular schema.
    2. Then truncate the tables.
    3. Then import that export backup.
    reindex indexes
    1. Find out how much space is used by the indexes.
    2. Add that much of space in a different tablespace
    3. then move the indexes there.
    I am not sure about the steps which I missed. I need some advice from you.
    And how can I gain the space in the Unix server after this delete operation?

    With problems like this, I think that the first response should not be that we need to reorg tables/indexes. Steps are as follows.
    1)Ask users what portion of app is running slow? and how much slow.
    2)Also as others have suggested generate awr report or statspack or estat/bstat and see where time is being spent?
    3)Problem could be that execution plan of some sqls may have changed and they may be performing badly. This is the most likely reason. Other problem could be that there is some other contention in database or there is an I/O problem. All these you can find from these reports.

  • Flash and Search Engine Indexing

    Hi all,
    I am sure this is a newbie question that has been answered before but does using
    flash on a website affect how the site is indexed by the main search engines?
    thanks
    TermPat

    Well in theory, search engines like Google are suppose to be able to read the text used in Flash Website, improving SEO somewhat. But in my experience, it has not developed to a point that is equal to a straight HTML site. In particular, if you are using xml files to provide text or other data to the Flash pages, I don't see Google indexing that text.
    So as a backup, I would suggest using swfobject to place your Flash on the Web page. Then add plenty of regular HTML as "alt content" to descibe in great detail the graphic elements. Since most viewers will not see this "alt content" you can actually over do the descriptions and get in MORE unique phrases, descriptions, and text content, than if you were just using HTML.
    So in effect, you can get your graphic elements displayed with Flash but the text data described in HTML. Is it more work? Yes, But if SEO is important to you, Flash of and by itself will not index as well as just HTML.
    Here's an example of using "alt content" to descibe the products in much greater detail than what you actually see on the Flash page. First view the Web page, its just a simple .swf with a little text on it. Then view the source code and see the "alt content" that lies behind the Flash.:
    http://www.ksowetsuits.com/
    For more info on swfobject:
    http://code.google.com/p/swfobject/
    Here's a little tip to measure exactly when and what gets indexed on your site. Create a unique word that cannot be found ANYWHERE on the Internet, something like "myuniquewordisdellamagestic"...can't be found anywhere on Google.
    So include your special words in both your Flash file as well as the swfobject "alt content", using 2 unique words, to see which is indexed first. As soon as that word is indexed, it will appear top position, first page. So Google for it every so often, once it shows up you know that content has been indexed. See which gets indexed first, the text in Flash or the text in the "alt content".
    I had one site where I used a complete text narration of a Flash video as the "alt content" and had the VIDEO (actually it's alt content) indexed within 4 hours. Now that's a case where using Flash PLUS alt content give a better WEb page than just the Flash alone or just the text narration alone. Best of both worlds I would say.
    Best wishes,

  • H2 devide implicit and explicit created indexes by dictionary views?

    For migrating amounts of data it is useful to drop and recreate indexes and referencing constaints. A implicit created index by defining a primary/unique key constraint will be dropped implicitly by dropping the before mentioned constraint. Creating such a constraint after creating an equivalent index with the constraint name will result in an other behaviour. The explicit created index will not be dropped by dropping the referencing primary/unique key constraint.
    So far so good and well known. The question is: Which dictionary view columns will show me the difference between implicit and explict created indexes if I try to dynamically drop and recreate indexes and unique / primary key constraints?

    Oracle Version is always helpful in answering questions, but for 9i you can find the system generated by:
    dba_indexes.generated = 'Y'
    or
    'SYS_' naming convention for system generated indexes
    or
    dba_constraints.constraint_name = dba_constraints.index_name
    Hope this helps - JTommaney

  • Having arranged some scanned pictures in an album in I-Photo how can I keep them in the order I have chosen when I move the album. They all have the scan date and not the taken date and move to new positions if I move them from one album to another.

    Having arranged some scanned pictures in an album in I-Photo how can I keep them in the order I have chosen when I move the album. They all have the scan date and not the taken date and move to new positions if I move them from one album to another.
    Is there any way to re-number them in the order I have chosen so that they can then be sorted by number? The scans are all from pre-digital images that I wish to move to a photobook and I don't want to have to organise them twice!
    Thanks for any suggestions.

    I was a bit short, Chris, sorry. It is limited, what can be posted, when typing on an iPad.
    Now I am back on my Mac. I meant the following:  Batch Change the date for a large range of photos, that should have a date stepped in increments.
    Select all Photos at once and use the command "Photos > Batch Change".
    Then set the date for the first photo and select an increment, e.g. one minute.
    Now all photos will get a new date assigned, incremented by one minute, in the sequence you have selected. So you will be able to sort them by date.  This way it will be unnecessary to change the titles or filenames.

  • How to get list of block identifiers in a empty table and an empty index

    We have an application that has issue with ITL waits: this application is running many INSERT statements on a table that has 2 NUMBER columns and one primary key index. The application is designed to run INSERT statements but they are never committed (this is a software package).
    To check what are the really allocated ITL slots, I know that I can dump data block but I don't know how to get the block identifiers/numbers for an "empty" table and an "empty" index. Does someone knows how to do that ?
    PS: I already had a look to the Metalink notes and I have a Metalink SR for that but maybe OTN forum is faster ?

    You should be able to find the first data/index block with the following, even on an empty table/index.
    select header_file, header_block +1
    from dba_segments
    where segment_name = '<index or table name>';

  • How to search a special string in txt file and return it's position in txt file?

    How to search a special string in txt file and return it's position in txt file?

    I just posted a solution for a similar question here:  http://forums.ni.com/ni/board/message?board.id=170&view=by_date_ascending&message.id=362699#M362699
