The Telstra Connected Seniors program
Telstra Connected Seniors is a program created to help older Australians learn more about technology. It's made up of:
Short Self Teach Videos -over 60 easy to follow self-teach videos which are available on Telstra's YouTube channel. The topics covered include mobiles, tablets, computers and home networking, email, internet shopping, social networking and online security.
Tutorial DVDs - educational training DVDs which can be borrowed from many local libraries. They are designed to support older Australians with the information they need to get online and learn at their own pace.
Face-to-face training is available for free or at a low cost through community colleges and libraries across NSW. Designed with the NSW Government, it is part of a partnership called 'Tech Savvy Seniors'. This training will assist older Australians who have limited or no previous experience in using technology to learn new skills for the future.

    Many Thanks, Kurt.
I knew I'd seen the solution you've provided somewhere - either in MacWorld or MacFormat - but couldn't remember the Gatekeeper bit!
I shall save it somewhere VERY safe now in case this happens again …
You have made an old man very happy and saved me from worrying that senile decay had suddenly set in. (I was 70 last week so you might understand the situation from that.)

Firefox won't open/connect tp the internet. Explorer opens and connects. Windows firewall turned off. No other antivirus program running. Happened when I downloaded new Firefox update.

I had the same problem when i dl-ed a new anti-virus softward, but what I did help me reconnect Firefox again!
    Here is what I did,
Go to open firefox browser-->option-->advanced-->network-->settings-->and change it to auto-detect proxy settings for this network!
It worked for you, hope it will work for you too =)!

  • Updated iTunes to newest version, and once iTunes opened, it crashes immediately.  Have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the program numerous times.  Also had a hard time getting a network connection over the weekend (I knew my connection was fine)

Updated iTunes to the newest version but have been unable to use it since.  Once it opens and tries to connect to the iTunes store it crashes and asks me to close the program and report the problem.  In the Windows information center, it tells me to update iTunes to the newest version to fix the problem; when I do and I tell it to repair the problem it goes through the motions, but the program doesn't change, it still doesn't work.  I have tried uninstalling and resinstalling the program numerous times from the weekend until now to no avail.  After the update was completed, it had a difficult time making a network connection; I knew that the connection was fine, as I was on the internet and receiving e-mail at the same time.

    Close your iTunes,
    Go to command Prompt -
(Win 7/Vista) - START/ALL PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES, right mouse click "Command Prompt", choose "Run as Administrator".
    (Win XP SP2 & above) - START/ALL PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES/Command Prompt
In the "Command Prompt" screen, type in
    netsh winsock reset
    Hit "ENTER" key
    Restart your computer.
If you do get a prompt after restart windows to remap LSP, just click NO.
Now launch your iTunes and see if it is working now.
If you are still having these type of problems after trying the winsock reset, refer to this article to identify which software in your system is inserting LSP:

  • Free? Setup and Connection in "Get Connected"

Just to see if anyone had the "No connection Fee" experience with the recent BT's promotion in their "Get Connected" package.
My BT line was installed on 28th Jan after joining above promotion which was due to expired end of Jan 2010 and was extending, probably still going, in which the setup and connection fees are waived if signed up for 18 months, which I did.
The first bill came at beginning of Feb showing the full connection fee of £124.99, I had to call BT to sort this out, the voice at BT said, oops, discount show have been given, admin error !! The money will be credited in the next bill (28th Feb) and the options I was given were
    1) Pay the full bill (as I've DD setup to do so already) then get the credit in my next bill - no chance, I rather keep the money in my pocket!!
    2) Cancel the DD, suspend the payment, wait for next bill (with the credit), then everything will sort itself out - this was the option I then agreed.
However, I have lost out the discounts on line rental (From DD and paperless billing) and I can't setup the account till the Feb bill has been paid.
So from a BT admin error, it cost me both time (to sort this out on the phone and re-setup the DD) and money due to loss of rent discounts (and I don't know when I can setup the DD as the website is not allowing me to do it currently, may be due the the Account is being suspended).
What a hassle, all from a BT admin error !!

The situation is getting more and more in BT's favour!!
This month's bill (dated 28th Feb '10) has eventually available online on 2nd March. Correct, the £124.99 connection charge has been reversed but on the date of the credit, from the basic Weekend only package, I'm now on Evening & Weekend Package costing an extra £2.99 per month - which I absolutely do not need !!
So I phone up and eventually spoke to a very nice gentleman in Billing Section, agreed to the, yet an operator error by enterring a "wrong" code causing the upgrade of Calling Plan. Also agreed to credit me with the manual payment processing fee of £1.50. Unfortunately, after over half an hour on the phone, not able to change my Calling Plan Back and said he'll have to pass it onto someone else to sort out the next day, which would be acceptable as he did genuinely want to help.
I kept a close eye on the Calling Plan details online over the last 2 days, all the changes (and credits) have been actioned and can be seen online, great, I thought, until I looked at the calling plans page. I'm now on 2 plans costing me a total of £23.08 per month !!!!
The Weekend only plan is £11.54/month which is correct, but I'm also on "the weekend + free connection package" also costing £11.54/month giving a total of £23.08 per month, I assumed this will start from the previous change date as requested by me.
The only way to explain all this is the BT System has been program in such a way that doesn't matter how had the operator tries, the end only way the changes can be accepted is by charging more month per month !!
Come on software guys (or is it management?), please sort this out, this is not accetable !!

  • Timeouts and connection problems after 5.1(2) upgrade

AIM/chat and some other programs are having timeout/connection problems after upgrade to 5.1(2). I am using S241 also. The connection problems stopped when the IPS was set to bypass. Rebuilt IPS and left sigs at default settings and problem is still happening. I am not seeing any of the IPs that are having the problem in the Event Viewer or on the Events in the IDM.
Any known issues with the 5.1(2) that would cause this type of problem?

I don't know specifically, but I did notice that 5.1(3) was released today.

  • MySQL and Java - getting program to work

I am setting up mysql to run sql from a Java program on my pc at home and probably biting off more than I can chew. I get these messages when executing the java program ExecuteSQL.java:

    This is what I did.
I created a folder on my C: drive named MySQL.
I downloaded these two zip files form the MySQL website
         * mysql-connector-java-3.0.11-stable
         * mysql-4.0.18-win.zip
Installed both of these in folder MySQL.
I modified this line in the program ("ExecuteSQL" 1st pgm in chapter 17) I got from "Java Examples In a Nutshell" and compiled it into directory jwork.
    String driver = "com.mysql.jdbc.driver", url = "jdbc:mysql://", user = "", password = "";
The readme file talks about putting a jar file in $JAVA_HOME/jre/lib/ext.
the word "Java_Home" (I now know) is not literally the name but represents the
name of the folder where the JDK to be used exists. So I put a copy of
    mysql-connector-java-3.0.11-stable-bin.jar in folder C:\JDK14/jre/lib/ext.
    Then I get a ClassNotFoundException error com.mysql.jdbc.driver.
    After finding
    http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jsp?forum=31&thread=439796
    and
    http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jsp?forum=31&thread=499888
and others, I copied (a second copy) the jar file to the directory where I am create my java objects.
Then I unzipped it to that directory, creating three folders that hold the unzipped objects.
I tried executing the program again. I get the messages at the top of this post.
The Manifest file is in one of the three folders unzipped to my java work directory.
In the second of the two above threads, jsalonen says:
the problem can be solved by mentioning mysql.jar in the Class-Path attribute
in the manifest of the jar file:
In this "manifest" file, there are only three lines and I added a fourth and it looks like this
(there are two, one in directory MySQL\META-INF and one in directory jwork\META-INF:
    Manifest-Version: 1.0
    Ant-Version: Apache Ant 1.6.1
    Created-By: 1.4.0_01-b03 (Sun Microsystems Inc.)
    Main-Class:jwork\ExecuteSQL
How do I "mention" mysql.jar in the class path attribute?
In the index.list file (in the directory with the manifest file, do I need to add anything to refer that "com.mysql.jdbc.driver" is the driver?
    Do I need index.list in MySQL\META-INF ?
Thank you for your help. The program ExecuteSQL follows.

Don't put those JARs in the lib/ext directory. Only language extensions (e.g., packages that start with "javax") belong in there.
Learn how to set the CLASSPATH properly for starters:
    http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.2/docs/tooldocs/windows/classpath.html
You might want to look at the JDBC tutorial, too:
    http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/jdbc/
Do one thing at a time. Get the program to work, then worry about packaging it into an executable JAR.

  • Verizon Edge with no discount and 4 hours of wasted time with Customer care

So far my experience with Verizon has been far short of superior as it should be for the number 1 carrier in the nation.  I tried to open an account using the Edge program and did not qualify.  This was on the same day that the down payment for the Edge program became  available.  I called to determine why I was ineligible and try to find out if there was any way to become eligible and was told no and was told several times to just start a 2 yr agreement.  1 hour wasted when I could have just paid a down payment that day and none of these future problems would have occurred.  Fiance opened an account in his name on the Edge program for me.  I already had a prepaid account with a telephone number I wished to keep but was told in store that this would not be possible.  Account was opened with a new telephone number which I will refer to as telephone number A.  I contacted customer care and was informed that it would be possible to keep my telephone number  which I will refer to as telephone number B but was unable to do get it done at the time due to not having both of my phones with me.  30 minutes wasted as it should have been done in store the number transfer.  Was able to call back later and get my prepaid account with telephone number B added to my new account with my telephone number A.  We then proceeded to switch telephone numbers so that I had my original number, telephone number B, and then cancelled the additional line.  1 hr and 30 minutes wasted!!!  New single line plans come out and I chat in to change my calling plan to the Single line plan with 1gb of data for $60 and $50 with my Edge discount.  Chat representative changed my plan to the More Everything plan with 1gb.  This was not at all what I wanted as I'm trying to save money and I was hit with a huge bill.  Called in about bill got plan sorted out and am informed I no longer have the Edge discount because I'm using telephone number B.  I'm informed the Edge discount was applied to telephone number A and I can not have that discount using telephone number B.  This by the way took over 2 hours after I was informed by the customer care agent on the phone alot of inaccurate info.  I was informed the 1gb single line plan was a loyalty plan and I was not eligible until my account had been open for 1 year.  I was also informed that the Edge discount did not apply to the single line plan.  2 hours wasted After speaking with a supervisor I was still unable to have my Edge discount applied.  How can this be Verizon?  How can I purchase a phone on the Edge program, be given a discount and then have it removed simply because I wish to use the telephone number I've had for over 10 years?  I WAS NEVER ONCE INFORMED I WOULD LOSE MY DISCOUNT!!!!  I went from prepaid to the Edge program because I wanted a new phone and 4G and because of the Edge discount making it very close to what I was already paying.  I've wasted 4 hours on this when all of this should have been done in the begging.  If I had been able to put a down payment down I could have had my number then 90% of these problems I wouldn't be having.  You can't tell me there is no way to use my number and not get the Edge discount.  VERY UNHAPPY!!!

So ChristinaB_VZW replied to my post.  You would think I would get a little further help regarding my issue, correct?  WRONG!!!  I told her thank you for helping me and she asked me to reply back with my original message copied and pasted which I did on 4/8.  I waited until 4/17 and had not heard back so I responded back to her.  Still haven't heard anything from her.  Do they simply post on these forums so that customers have the appearance of receiving assistance so that in public it looks as though I've been helped when in actuality still nothing has been done.  I could understand if I was begging for a new phone or wanted $100's of dollars off my bill for no reason but I'm not.  I want the discount that I should be receiving as part of my VERIZON EDGE AGREEMENT.  This is the worst experience I've ever had with any kind of services for money.  I know one thing for a fact and that's one you are a customer you no longer matter.  So thank you ChristinaB_VZW for making Verizon appear to care about customer issues when in actuality they do not.  I will be sure to never recommend your services to anyone and to reference this issue and lack of customer support for that reason.

  • After the latest Security Update 2012-001 (Mac OS X 10.6.8) my Adobe Photoshop CS 8, Dreamweaver 8, and InDesign CS programs crash when I try to save a file.

After the latest Security Update 2012-001 (Mac OS X 10.6.8) my Adobe Photoshop CS 8, Dreamweaver 8, and InDesign CS programs crash when I try to save a file. HELP!!!

    Howdy,
Apparently some are reporting that this causes the older PowerPC (PPC) applications that are supported in 10.6 via 'Rosetta' to crash upon attempting to open/save/print using any dialog box, or fail in other similar ways such as simply not printing or quitting, or freezing/hanging/crashing of the application.
I have read of some companies that have indeed submitted proper bug reports to Apple, but that is not a guarantee of a bug-fix being issued.
    You might wish to read:
    http://www.macintouch.com/readerreports/snowleopard/index.html#d02feb2012
If you are unsure if you are still using PowerPC apps, if the application is currently running, look under the 'Activity Monitior' (in Applications -> Utilities), or alternatively you could check in the System Profiler, Applications. Check the column "Type".
Here is a fairly simple way you can restore you system and restore you applications functionality again, if you don't have a recent clone or good Time Machine backup that you can restore from. If you do, restore from your backup prior to having installed the Security Update 2012-001.
    Time Machine restore: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1427
If you are restoring a backup made by a Mac to the same Mac
With your backup drive connected, start up your Mac from the Lion recovery partition (Command-R at startup) or Mac OS X v10.6 installation disc. Then use the "Restore From Time Machine Backup" utility. Select the backup prior to your issues, and it will be restored back to the state it was in at that time.
If you can't easily restore from a backup, you can instead do the following:
    - You first start by reinstalling your OS X 10.6.x, this will preserve all your user data, your applications, no worries there.
    - Then install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 (links provided below)
    - Make sure you're printers are showing up correctly in your system preferences, if not, re-add the printers
    - Then finally, run the Apple Software Update (by pulling down the Apple Menu), and install any and all remaining updates, except do not then re-install the Security Update 2012-001. It is possible that you may have to reboot after installing some of the updates, and you may even need to run it a 2nd time to make sure that you've got all updates, except NOT the Security Update 2012-001.

  • I intend to purchase a Mac Mini and connect to a regular (not smart) flat screen TV and use such as monitor. Can this setup also allow access to Netflix or Apple movies or an Apple TV is also required?

I intend to purchase a Mac Mini and connect to a regular (not Smart) flat screen TV that will be as such a large monitor. With this setup do I require an additional Apple TV to watch programs from Netflix, Apple Store movies, Y-tube etc?

You can view NetFlix and YouTube via their websites on a Mac computer. You can purchase/play iTunes movies and other thing via iTunes on the Mac.

Sorry, but I don't understand your question. What "discount amount" are you referring to?

  • I can't connect to the router in my home.  Things were working fine as usual - I attended school and connected to their WiFi network as usual.  When I returned home I could not connect to my own home router.  The Ipad seeks the network but nothing happens

I can't connect to the router in my home.  The Ipad seeks the network but nothing happens.  I went to school and connected to their WiFi network as usual with no problems.  When I returned home I could not connect to my home router.  The Ipad seeks the router number but nothing happens.  I rebooted the Ipad a few times in the school.  The numbers identifying the router, etc. on my Ipad no longer appear there.
TThe Ipad guide says to connect to the WiFi use setup but I can't find the setup program in the Ipad.
I reset the network settings to the factory defaults but this doesn't fix the problem.
What can I do to reconnect to my home router?

    Some things to try first:
    1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
    2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
    3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
    4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
    5.  Renew IP Address: (especially if you are droping internet connection)
        •    Launch Settings app
        •    Tap on Wi-Fi
        •    Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
        •    In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

  • Why is Apple focusing on networking and connecting socially?

Seeing the newest OS come out this week made me very excited! I was hoping to upgrade today, but changed my mind on a few reasons...
It doesn't seem very different then Lion, so is it really worth the $20.00? All they've really added, on the surface of the OS, is more iOS features like reminders, game-center, and notifications. They also added easer access to social networks like facebook, twitter, flikr; and connect to your iOS devices. Is this all really necessary or is it just typical advertising to draw in the average buyer?
Now I see Apple is trying to make life easer on it's buyers, but where is the artistic improvements in the app's, sure you can share your photographs that you edited in iPhoto, or a video you spliced together in iMovie, but what about a NEW creative application, like an animation program that apple makes specifically for its computers, or a type of web designer that lets you design in HTML format? So, how I see it, in the beginning Apple computers where made for the artistic type, Today they seem to be in too big a rush to stay ahead of Windows then to try something different. To get to my point, what's new? Not improved, what's NEW?!
I am looking for a reason why this program is worth buying?
    Thanks,
    pappyprops

Yes, the focus with ML is certainly on trying to get people who have iOS devices to switch to using Apple computers.
For long-time devotees of OS X like us, there's not much in it. Snow Leopard was still a far more versatile and more widely compatible OS than either 10.7 or 10.8. If you're on 10.6.8. I would think twice about upgrading.
However, I think if you're on 10.7 already, it's worth upgrading to 10.8, simply because ML seems to be more stable and more refined. They have fixed some of the annoying things in Lion (like you can now put Devices back to the top of the Finder sidebar, Resume is turned off by default, 'Save As' has been resurrected, Launchpad actually has a filter bar etc etc.). Some of the apps are better too - some nice new features in Preview for editing and Safari has an all-in-one address/search bar).
More features are advertised explained here: http://www.apple.com/osx/whats-new/features.html

  • Lightroom 4 and 5 my program constantly freezes while using the crop and straighten tool

In both Lightroom 4 and 5 my program constantly freezes while using the crop and straighten tool with horizontal images. Im running Lightroom on a Quad-Core Intel Xeon Mac with 32 GB of memory with OS 10.8.4, this problem has gotten worse and worse to the point where the crop tool is unusable. Please help!

    Alright,
no replies so far! Anyways, here's some more information which is leading me to the conclusion that the bug causing the effect described above is a combination of Apple's SMB implementation of Mavericks and the way Lightroom is actually using SMB network access:
I did another trial by connecting a USB hard drive to the USB port of my router (Netgear). The connection is quite slow, but moving one of the folders in question (see my 1st post above) to the shared drive connected to the Router made Lightroom on my Windows machine to see the photos again, when I told Lightroom where to find the moved folder!
Everything was working as expected, on the Windows machine again! Moving the folder back again to the Mac Mini fileshare was causing Lightroom on the PC to get blind again for the pictures trying to sync or import. However, accessing and modifying a photo was possible again, like it was before the trial. So it's only the sync and import function having a problem!
I also did some trial in re-building ACLs and access rights on the file server with no luck. So there's got to be a functionality in sync and import of Lightroom which is using a certain SMB feature which is not supported by Apple's SMB implementation!
    Any thoughts or hints?
    Thanks!
