Temp and bios question

Okay, new to the board and I must say I am impressed. Not a lot of hating goin on.
First the details:
MSI 875P NEO-FISR mobo bios v3.5
Intel P4 2.8 800fsb - Northwood not overclocked- stock HS/Fan
ATI Radeon X800Pro
Kingston DDR400- 2x512
Lite-on CD RW / DVD RW
Samsung 120GB SATA HDD 7200rpm
Win2K SP4
Aspire X-Alien case with 6 80mm fans - 420w PSU
Hopefully thats enough info...anyway my problem is the temp on my CPU has suddenly went up by almost 20 degrees C. Im wondering if it is the latest BIOS. I had updated every time from 3.1 up to 3.3 and I decided to not put on 3.4 just out of laziness. I did update to 3.5
Before my temps would run 28-29C idle and after serious gaming it might go up to 45C. the other day I noticed it was idle at 49C and gaming would jump to 63-64C. I have CoreCenter set to shutdown at 65C because I don't trust it. Nothing has really changed other than the BIOS and a newer version of CoreCenter. I blew off HS last night, but no change...it really was not dusty, only had system for few months now...My X800 runs in same area as always, so I dont think it is an ambient temp problem. I also uninstalled CoreCenter and installed an older version, but no change.
I was wondering if anyone else had this problem. Could it be the temps were wrong before, and they have been fixed with a subsequent BIOS?
Could be they are wrong now?
I'm thinking of buying a Zalman HS/Fan, but it doesnt make sense that what was running really cool before is now running hot with same HS/Fan...so Im not sure if I NEED to buy a new HS/Fan or wait to see if next BIOS fixes problem.
CoreCenter is only program I have used so far, so I will try SpeedFan when I get home and post the results of that tonite or tomorrow, I wanted to post this to see if there might be some other having same problem, or another possible fix. I was afraid to flash BIOS back to previous version...I was not sure what would happen. Is this possible? Should I try it and are there any "gotchas" in doing that?
thanks for any information you have.

okay, so I disabled CoreCenter and installed Speedfan using Danny's guide. SpeedFan has actually dropped the temps from idle at 49C to 41C and gaming gets up to about 62 C still...one interesting thing is CoreCenter would only allow my fan at max speed to just under 4,000 RPM (if I remember correctly) and SpeedFan on max is over 5400 RPM which I am thinking is responsible for the 8 degree drop in idle temp.
With all the info you guys have provided like the water cooled system running same temp, Im thinking it is the BIOS. Why would a water cooled system run same temp as a stock HSF setup, even if the BIOS update bumped the temps up 20 degrees, I would think the WC system would still be running cooler, like 38-39C compared to our 45-46C.
Anyway, Im thinking Im going to hold off on purchasing an aftermarket HSF and see what the next BIOS brings. I feel comfortable that the bios is throwing the temp READINGS off and the actual temp is not hotter than it has ever been.....I guess....heh. I do like how SpeedFan is controlling the temp better than CoreCenter...if you guys have not tried it, you might want to. It did lower my temp readings 8-9C. Here is the link to the thread on setting it up.

  • CPU Temp and Bios?

I have my Athlon 2100+ installed with a volcano 6 into my KT3-Ultra ARU board. Is 40-41C a good temp (from bios)? FSB is at 133, case temp was 29C and room temp was 68F.
Does MSI put the new bios on the board during production? It appears my board came with bios version 5.4 already installed and I just want to make sure it's not a glictch.
    ~Matt

Hi I think as MSI manufactures thier boards ,they update to the latest bios as they put out new ones, because when I bought my TURBO2, it came with the then latest bios 3.2. So if you see 5.4 ,thats what you got. Regards, BIGDADDY51 CT USA

  • Pegatron IPMTB-TK motherboard version 1.04 and BIOS question?

    Hi,
    I bought a refurbished HP Pavilion Elite m9650f, Win 7 on 04-21-2010
and it too has suffered from the crashes, freezes and multiple BSOD
that many people have been complaining about.  I have the Pegatron
    IPMTB-TK TRUCKEE version 1.04 motherboard.
    HP calls it TRUCKEE-UL8E.
Am I looking to replace it with version 1.04 E01 or version 1.05E?
(With much reading on the web about my m9650f problems,
I finally have it maybe 90% stable after replacing the hard drive,
upgrading to BIOS ver 5.29 and replacing all the RAM.)
I know there is a class action suit including the m9650f pending.
    http://www.hpelitedesktopsettlement.com/
Will I be able to request a repair for my HP computer?
When will HP let people request a repair?
Also, I currently have BIOS ver. 5.29 and notice that there is a ver. 6.10
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=pv-88852-1&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en
BIOS ver 6.10 improves system support for Intel Core i7-980X Extreme Edition processors which is what ver 5.29 says it does.
BIOS ver 6.10 also installs HP Vision Diagnostic tool which I don't know anything about.
I don't plan on installing an Intel Core i7-980X Extreme Edition processor.
Should I upgrade to BIOS ver 6.10 or just leave well enough alone?
    Thank you for your time.

    Hi Dashby,
My motherboard is 1.04E01 and it has been very stable.   I have not heard or seen anyone with 1.05.
You can put PCI cards other than x16 in the PCI-E x16 slot such as x1 or x4 cards.
Typically what happens if another video were to be install in the second PCI-E x16 is the total 16 lanes of bandwidth would be split between the two slots.  You can't run SLI or CrossFire on the truckee motherboard so in my opinion a second video card is a waste.  Just use a BIG video card if needed.
You can use PC Wizard and look under Mainboard PCI Express to gain information about the PCI-E slots and the speed that they are running when a card is installed.
The Asus U3S6 expansion card is an interesting piece of technology. hmmmm   I wonder if the bios would support a SATA 3 boot device?

  • Upgrade to SSD and BIOS question

I have an x200 model 7454CTO with attached Ultrabay (with optical drive, CD read/wrire, DVD read only).  Original HD is 256gb, running XP pro SP 3.  It has original BIOS version date 6DET33WW(1.10) 10/27/2008 and SMBIOS version 2.4.  I am not having any issues with this laptop.  I want to change to an SSD because other users of SSDs report much better speed.
    My questions are;
    1. Are there any issues with replacing my HD with the Crucial CT1993743 256GB  m4 2.5" SSD?
    2. There appears to be later versions of the BIOS.    Have read somewhere that if the there are no problems best to leave BIOS alone.  I don't know if the new SSD requires a BIOS update. Should I update the BIOS?
    3. Is there anything to do about the SMBIOS?
    Thank you

Thank you very much for your reply.  I will leave the BIOS alone.  My SSD is on it's way.  I found it a bit interesting that the Crucial m4 SSD had good user reviews whereas the v4 had bad ones.  Crucial originally recommended the v4 but I selected the m4 based on the reviews rather than any in-depth search.  Both show up as compatible on the Crucial site.  Hope the reviews are accurate.
Re SMBIOS.  This was an item in the System Information just below the BIOS.  I asked about this just in case it had any relevance.
Re Win 7.  I have a relatively new smart phone running, I guess, the mobile version of Win 7.  I think that this will give a bit of the touch-and-feel of Win 8 so that I may have a better understanding of how Win 8 will work for me.  I am so used to XP that I am somewhat (actually very) reluctant to change.  My senior age doesn't help.
    Thanks again.

  • Temps and BIOS 1.42

I flashed to 1.42 (my first ever flash and it went real smooth).  Anyway, my temps beforehand with 1.1 were usually around 66C and after playing games for too long they would sometimes get into the mid-70s.  With the flash they dropped to around 44C and as low as 40C.  Even after playing Doom3 for 2 hours they stayed at 44c.  I did a few reboots and all was well.
Today, I turned the computer on and BAM back to 64C.  Does anyone know why it would do this?  Is this a common problem?
    TIA.

I wish I knew the answer!  But you are not alone.  I have seen this exact type of really odd behavior.  Specifically, I was seeing similar temps as you originally with 1.2 BIOS, 50-66 CC.  I flashed to 1.3 and right away saw much improved temps - down around 40C (at first I thought this was because of CoolnQuiet but now I realize that wasn't enabled).
Problem was as soon as I restarted my machine, the temps went back to the old 50-65 C range.  And that's where they are now.  The MSI tech support person says they fixed the Newcastle temp problems in BIOS 1.2.  I tried to explain to him what I'm seeing and they don't believe it or think it's a cooling problem.  This board is just really flakey.  I think there is something wrong with the hardware somewhere.  Otherwise, why wouldn't the temps report consistently??  This is not just a matter of an improper multiplication factor in the BIOS software.

  • K8N Neo2 Plat power and bios question

    I have a K8N Neo2 Plat. I use a UltraProducts 500W xconnect PSU and a BFG 6800 GT OC.
A couple weeks ago the 6800 died. I contacted BFG and they sent me a new one.
The new one died the same way after a week. They said to check the power levels on the +12 rail.
In windows using softare tests it reports 13.58
in the bios it reports 12.22
both are over the allowed variance.
Ultra products told me to check with my motherboard manufacturer to see if there was a BIOS setting that would let me set the power on the +12V rail. Is that possible?
Is that something my K8N Neo2 Plat can do?

No, you cannot lower the 12V-rail by a bios setting. I really don't see what they mean by that.
Your motherboard does, however, regulate the power that comes from the power supply. Within certain margins it can lower the voltage and keep it steady. Your videocard can do the same. Now, depending on the tolerance (quality) of your hardware, you can vary on those margins. But on any piece of hardware, there is a point on which it cannot correct/lower a voltage that is too high. It then simply shuts down or dies.
To my opinion, the PSU-maker gave you a very funny piece of advice. What he actually says is that their psu may give too high a voltage (I talk about the 13+ now), but your hardware should correct this. That's not the way it works: they should make psu's that give 12V where it should. So, I'd demand a replacement. But, before you do: use a multimeter to measure the 12V-rail. You cannot trust the board's measurement too well.
But then, like Stick  says, I think that 12.22 is within mentioned margins. 13.58V is too high. So, that's why you should first measure using a multimeter. Measure for a longer time. System idle, system full load. Write everything down and see how steady this psu is. If 12V dances arround, replace it.

  • Flash bios and vga questions

    hi
i looked on the bios update page today and could see that there was some new bios.
    bios v3.6 updates vga bios.
does anyone know the difference between the vga in bios v3.3 and bios v3.6
im using bios 3.5 and it works great so i dont want to flash it if its not necessary or it would improve gfx as i use onboard gfx.
    bye

    Raven,
Actually 3.7 is out and it seems to have (so far so good) fixed the boot problem with my ATI Radeon card.  According to MSI it claims it is a fix for the 5900's. I had no trbl flashing as usual. If your machine is running fine and your not having any troubles why flash it, leave good enough alone. I know what you mean about not having a computer. I have a few backups because I don't want to be without one. I go on vacation, I have to bring my laptop to keep in touch.  I remember when my life was so simple.  )

  • New to OC and Bios stuff with 865 PENeoFIS2r

I'm not a retail PC guy and have always had mine built. However, even when you have one built, you never know what the mobo is unless you ask. After researching mobo's, I decided on my new Neo2 865PE FIS2r...I love my new board!
I had the CPU posted at the shop and pretty much put the rest together myself. My first time.  8)
I'm just kinda clueless when it comes to BIOS and overclocking. I don't really care to overclock and just want stability.

Bios questions which I can't seem to get help with.
I just switched the M.A.T. to FAST
I disabled the Dynamic Memory Overclocking feature after having my game, BHD, freeze and have to reboot. Was that the problem?
What is the Private, Corporal, Sargeant, Captain stuff????
I set mine low....like Private or something.
I also have "set high performance defaults" or "standard" defaults.
My game was running great yesterday and did not have a twinch, tweak or glitch.
Tonight, while playing, the game froze again and I had the motherboard beeping at me. I shut down and rebooted my system. That's when I reduced my Turbo setting to fast.
My CPU temp is right at 40-41 celsius I believe in my Core Center software.
Not sure what Bios version I have and don't think I need to flash it. It's a pretty new board.  )
Just need some basic info on what would be ideal settings for my mobo for stability in my game.
The manula for my mobo did not mention the Dynamic overclocking and military style ranks, Is there a FAQ or technical manula I can find on these subjects???

Is there a FAQ or technical manual  I can find on these subjects???
MSI has a page that explains it here
    MSI Dynamic Overclocking Technology
After that, you may also want to read through this FAQ as it contains lots of links to helpful information plus answers to common quieries
NEO boards Unofficial FAQ rev 9/04/2003 RAID-1 beta BIOSes links
On the suggestions, for a super stable system, set DOT to disabled, set MAT to slow and most everythig else to AUTO. If you want slightly better performance, set MAT to higher setting wherein you get no hanging or crashing - so far, you found up to FAST seems OK...  :(

Regardless how new, certain motherboard-memory-card combinations may require flashing the BIOS for more stable performance
As per concensus of many, if you have at least 1.3, that should be good enough FOR NOW  :] ... until the official 1.5 comes out for Neo2 which should be significantly better! FLASH AT YOUR OWN RISK

  • X61s: Power Management issues and related questions

    1)  My problems started when I upgraded to PM 3.5:  system instability, overheating, and battery run-down.  I finally eliminated PM 3.5 and it is running better, but still seems to be running more hot than before.
    2) Question: can I take the battery out when running on AC current?
    3) Also, do the batteries for the X61 also fit for the X61s?
    Richard

    1) download TPfancontrol and check your system temp and fan speed.
    2) Yes, but not recommended as the battery acts as a UPS, which prevents your laptop from shutdown if there is an accidental plug pull from the ac socket, or brown out/black out.
    3) yes.

  • Weired voltage cpu temp and fan speed readings

Built this system last week when i install core center I get no 3.3 v readings. cpu temp plays between 18c to 60c and the fan speed from 800 t0 6000rpm. Well sorry to say I solved the problem for good. Contacted MSI support. Only answer I got was Maybe the board was bad. Got it exchanged from the store and got an Asus av8 deluxe rev.2 instead. Everything runs fine. It was my first MSI board and sad to say it gave me a lot of headaches and configeration problems. The new setup ran great on the first try. Don't  think I will buy MSI again in the near future.

  • BX Master Bios Questions

sup, i have a bx master w/ a asus sloket adapter and it is a great setup.
and i need to update my bios to the ver 55 or 56 to fix other issues.
tryed the boot disk thing, and it gives me some errors, and bios write protect is disabled. tryed live update
and now i am running a older bios with very slightly less proformance and i get
unkown flash type msg after startup. i mostly find this to be kinda annoying since
i have to work on computers for a living and i should know how to fix this.
but this board is solid, at 1102mhz. it is also my main server with heavy traffic.
6mbs line with about 20 users leech'n 27/7 off this box. so not bad for a box i built out of used parts
    thx

hi thx for the reply but i figured it out last night,i forgot that the bx master has a jumper to disable bios write. i pulled it, and that fixed my "unknown Flash type"
msg that was comming up after post. hooked a floppy drive up and it flashed to the new bios with no probs. the machine runs so much better! then i formated my drives and did a fresh install of windows enterprise server 2003 and installed the new nvidia drivers for my old geforce 3. it's running sweet
i do have one question, would recomend instal'n intels bx chipset drivers?
    anyways much thx

  • Quick Bios Question

Hey Everyone just wondering im running the MSI 865PE Neo2 Without gig lan and was wondering does this mb come with the Configure S-ATA as RAID  option on bios cuz i dont see it.
And another question why when i have any usb devices pluged in i get the blue screen of death.

Lots of problems with connecting USB connectors to the front of your case. If your sure it's not the USB device itself causing the problem, try disconnecting the USB connectors that go to the front of your case AT THE MOTHERBOARD(JUSB2 I believe). Then try again on one of the back USB jacks.

  • MBP cpu temps and fanspeed help

So I have a MBP intle core i5 2.5GHz with 4 GB of ram, I thinkits either a 2008 model or 2010, I bought it new in 2010.
It has always gotten pretty hot, but thats what MBPs are supposed to do, I get it, but lately I have been testing temps and RPM with istat pro and rmcfancontrol and I think there may be a problem.
my temps all seem fine exceptmy CPU temp, which is regularly above 70 degrees. when doing semi extensive things like watching videos, streaming netflix or menial photoshop tasks, it is generally 80-85, with the fans around 3.5k RPM to 5K RPM. If I plug in my new 21 inch monitor (1920x1028 resolution) and play online poker, watch videos, or any design tasks involving adobe programs, ive seen it jump as high as 94 degrees, and im sure RPM atleast 6k, these may both go even higher as I have not tested the max yet.
this is usually when I have say an online poker lobby with tables going, a tracking software db running, skype on and firefox on. one question I have is, will tthere be less strain on the cpu if I drop the resolution of my new monitor? I dont want to drop it past 1600x1000 (not sure of the exact dimensions) because then it is defeating the purpose of why I bought a new larger screen with a high res.
second, I already run a desk sized fan on my MBP while it sits on an elevated pad (0.25 in approx) with 2 build in fans, left and right. The cpu is located just above the ESC button and that is where the heat is obviously centered so i place my cooling efforts as much as I can on that area.
my next question is, with fancontrol, how high can i force the fans to run and for how long while doing these kind of tasks on dual monitors? Can I set the left side fan to run at 5-6k as a default when playing a session of online poker (this is my part time job so its an important question) while leaving the right fan at 2k? or would it be better to keep them balanced? how long can they run at high rpm before it could cause problems? how long can my mbp run at constant temps of 80-95 degrees before it is dangerous for it? like I said it is mostly common for it to be between 75-85 at most times.
and last but not least, could this be a defect that it runs at such high temps? could it be my fans that are just plugged up and need a cleaning or replacing?

one question I have is, will tthere be less strain on the cpu if I drop the resolution of my new monitor? I dont want to drop it past 1600x1000 (not sure of the exact dimensions) because then it is defeating the purpose of why I bought a new larger screen with a high res.
Of course. A smaller resolution will require less performance to your dedicated graphic card. Note that your Mac has got two graphic cards (an Intel card and a NVIDIA GeForce one), and your computer switches to the dedicated graphic when it requires more graphic performance.

my next question is, with fancontrol, how high can i force the fans to run and for how long while doing these kind of tasks on dual monitors? Can I set the left side fan to run at 5-6k as a default when playing a session of online poker (this is my part time job so its an important question) while leaving the right fan at 2k? or would it be better to keep them balanced? how long can they run at high rpm before it could cause problems? how long can my mbp run at constant temps of 80-95 degrees before it is dangerous for it? like I said it is mostly common for it to be between 75-85 at most times.
We don't recommend smcFanControl because your Mac knows what's the correct fan speed and because this application modifies the SMC.
It's not good that your fans run at maximum speed for a long time (5000 rpm is too high). Now, the best you can do is to reset the SMC > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964 If you have problems with the fan speed, this should solve the problem.

and last but not least, could this be a defect that it runs at such high temps? could it be my fans that are just plugged up and need a cleaning or replacing?
If the SMC reset doesn't work, I suspect two things: the first, that you have a hardware problem, and the second, that there's a process eating CPU and memory when you are using the computer, because those temperatures are not normal. Also, at that fan speed, they may fail
