Temperature HP ENVY 17

  • HP Envy 15 Heating Issues and Screen Damage

    Hello,
This is going to be quite long since I'm going to explain everything in as much detail as possible.
I bought my HP Envy 15 (j123tx) in September 2014 and for three months I had absolutely no issue with it (work wise and gaming wise) until one day I booted up the computer and noticed that a big rectangular portion of the screen (on the top - in the rectangular area that aligns with the touchpad when the lid is closed) was discoloured. Specifically it was much darker than the rest of the screen on a black background and yellow on a white background.
After checking to see if there was anything on the screen's surface, I realized it was a hardware issue and decided to use my warranty (of which I have another 8 months or so remaining). I told the retailers about the issue and they told me it could be because of the pressure applied on the lid (when it is closed) that affects the screen specifically in that area since the touchpad is a bit sunken in to the notebook's body. After expressing my displeasure at how inconvenient that is since I've taken very good care of my notebook and have only transported it in the HP notebook bag, they promised me that they would send it to the HP Service Center in Sri Lanka who would replace the display panel for me (obviously since my notebook is still under warranty).
After 10 working days, I went over to the retailer's warranty center and collected my notebook with the display panel replaced and the problem gone. I did however notice that the technicians had pasted a note next to the touchpad which read "Check  the temperature of the touchpad. It could be heating up and damaging the screen". I asked the retailer's technicians what this meant and they told me that since the notebook has a magnesium (or magnesium based) body, it tends to heat up. The heat could also be heating up the touchpad (since that too seems to be made of magnesium). As a result whenever I close the lid of my notebook, the rectangular screen area directly above the touchpad could be heating up and thus getting damaged.
Now this to me seems like a huge product defect. I've been using HP notebooks for more than 8 years and I've never heard of this issue before. I asked the technicians how I could prevent this from occurring again and they told me to use the little cloth that came with the laptop when I bought it that is placed under the lid (between the screen and the keyboard) when the lid is closed.
While using that little cloth doesn't seem to be quite inconvenient, I'm very afraid that the problem will occur again and I'll have to get it fixed again which involves transferring all my data and losing my notebook for 2 weeks which is highly problematic for me as I require it for work. Should the problem occur again outside the warranty period, I feel I may have wasted a good amount of money on this notebook when I trusted HP over its competitors simply due to my past experiences with its reliability, durability and performance.
While I realize this is not a current issue - I would really like to know if this issue has been experienced before (my search did not turn up anything related) and if I do have to be worried about it happening again and if so, how I should go about handling it with the retailers (perhaps I should give it back and ask for a refund for selling me a defective product).
    Thank you sincerely.
PS: I have attached a picture of the problem when it occurred for your reference.

Thanks for the prompt reply WeiH.
Sadly there doesn't seem to be an HP Service Center in my country (Sri Lanka). So now I'm really confused as to what my retailer's technicians meant by "we'll send it to the local HP Support Center and have your display panel replaced".
Whatever they did, the display panel has been replaced and I've been using it for less than a week so far with no issues. The touchpad hasn't really been heating up and has in fact been as warm as the rest of the notebook. Perhaps it's because I have now turned on the option of disabling the touchpad whenever an external cursor device is attached (since I primarily always use a mouse).
Needless to say, since we both have no clue as to how the touchpad overheated and damaged the screen (in the exact position and measurement as the touchpad) I feel like it's just a matter of time before it happens again.
Obviously I understand that there's little you can do on your side other than direct me to an HP Support Center. However I hope my worries are justified as I feel that as a consumer I shouldn't have to worry about my brand new product malfunctioning by no fault of my own.

  • HP Envy 17 heat issues

Hi everyone! At the beginning of this year I bought a HP Envy 17 both for school and gaming, so far I've been pretty happy with it. However, the day before yesterday I bought Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon, a game that my laptop should be able to handle pretty well. But when playing the game, the CPU reaches temperatures of 90-93C and the GPU seems to run steady at 91C. That's extremely hot, since I've been able to run Battlefield 3 and Crysis 3 running in the low 80C without issue.
Of course when I experienced this my first action was to clean up dust and debris from the vents (There was very little), but that didn't do anything major. Then I started lowering that settings of the game quite a bit, I went from high settings to low/medium settings as well as switching from DX11 to DX9, this didn't help either though. Then my last attempt was to close everything but the programs required to run the game, didn't help either.
So now I turn to you, the HP forum, for help. I figured if anyone knows how to fix it, it's you guys.

    Master,
So it sounds like you know what you are doing.
I have to ask the obvious:
Are you already running a cooler under that notebook?   This works when the system is doing its best and all else is equal.
    Commentary:
Should you have to run a cooler under a notebook for which you paid a bunch of money and you do not feel like it should be necessary?  Personal option and opinion.  I do not debate this particular issue with anyone.  I run a fancy cooler under a hot running dv7t Quad.  Works quite well, in fact.
If you are open to the idea, you can buy a cooler with lights, switches for on / off, fan speed control... you can opt to plug in your cooler to a powered hub so you do not have to run it directly off the notebook -- you do need to remember to turn the cooler on / off when it is connected this way -- you can stick a Hercules X-stand under the notebook between the cooler and the notebook for even more air circulation, and this way you don't even have to run the cooler as often since the notebook runs better with more air under it.
Just Google / search for any price range.  The better coolers will run you between $40 and $70 or so US.  You can get a cheap one that works for $20 US.   The Hercules X-stand is sold at Amazon.com and maybe some other places.  ??
    ====================================================================================
Your system is not running slow.. nonetheless, you might scan the following:
Fan Runs Constantly, the PC Notebook Operates Slower than Expected and Generates Heat
    ====================================================================================
If you have not already done so, you can try this setting.  Granted it is really for "performance" and NOT for heat generation.  Anything that is not spinning cycles is saving you heat, so in that sense, it is saving you both resource and heat:
    In Visual Settings Tab:
To turn OFF every Aero display enhancement:
Select "Adjust for best Performance" > OK
To turn OFF some display enhancements:
    Select "Custom"
And CHECK - UNCHECK those features you desire to use > OK
    ====================================================================================
    Good Luck!

  • Temperatures on vista 64 with mac pro

    Hello all,
I just installed vista 64 on my mac pro (early 2008) with geforce 8800gt. Performance is great, but I am kinda worried about the temperature of the hardware.
After a couple of minutes of gaming my fans start running fast (I think it's the gpu one) to keep the hardware cool.
I installed to check my temperatures and it seems my gpu is running at 85 degrees celcius and my memory between 55 and 60.
The cores of my cpu are between 40 and 50.
Does this seem ok? Isn't 85 a bit hot for the cpu?
    Thanks

The 8800GT can take 85*C but it is high, and that card doesn't have the best fan or cooling. Most GPUs can take 90-105*C. Mine never would go below 55-58 C. A new EVGA GTS 250 1GB though runs at a nice 40* but obviously only works in Windows.
You definitely want the latest 190.xx drivers of course.
I use to install two apps to help. EVGA Precision to control the graphic card, InputRemapper will keep some (3) of your regular fans at 1000 rpm or above. The system waits too long before the fans kick in.
The cpu is warmer than I like but your FBDIMMs are actually great temps and to be envied.

  • Gaming on an ENVY 15-j105sa

Hi everyone, this is my first post on the forums. I was thinking about buying the ENVY Touchsmart j105ea for gaming and for some other tasks (like word documents and powerpoints). So my question is: WIll this laptop run at very hot temperatures during heavy gaming ( and as a result slow down(intel processors do that))? It looks quite thin so my guess is that the air flow would be quite restricted but I may be wrong. Thanks -Thomas5020

I have a very similar model with the same processor and the nVidia 750M and this one is the 740M. When running intense graphics applications such as 3DMark 11, the fan does kick on and run hard and the air coming out of the vents does get pretty warm. However, it does not overheat and this is normal on a laptop trying to run full screen games. The scores I get are about P2600 on 3D Mark11 and a real gaming laptop would get something like P4000, but P2600 would be playable for most games. The 740M would score just a bit lower.

  • Temperature and fan Probook 6570b on battery power.

    Hi
I'm new to this forum, so please excuse me if I'm not complete with my first post.
Last week monday I bought a HP Probook 6570b at my college PXL (Belgium, Limburg, Hasselt), but it was running under Windows 8 Pro 64bit. I didn't like this OS so I went and bought a Windows 7 Professional 64bit on friday. So I've used Windows 8 for about a week, and since saturday I'm running Windows 7. Now I've noticed the temperature is reaching up to 60°C when I'm only working on Word, Outlook or Firefox for example..
A friend of mine in class has een HP Envy, bought after I got my HP Probook last week, so new as well (15", i7, Windows 8 64bit, 16GB RAM, 2GB Nvidia GPU,...) and his laptop is only reaching around 40°C-48°C, running the same programs.
Now I'm wondering if it's normal that my Probook is getting much warmer?
    Things I noticed:
-Could it be that running Windows 8 is less power consuming than Windows 7? (and thereby askes less of the CPU and produces less heat because of that)
-I found that while running Windows 8 in the beginning the fan didn't run that much and so often as now on Windows 7 (I had the same kind of programs running and installed on the laptop), but that could also be my imagination. I didn't look at temperatures while Windows 8 was on it.
Things I did while swapping OS':
-Formatted the SSD completely, installed Windows 7, installed all the drivers for my model from the HP site.
-I also did a BIOS update, could it be because of this? (maybe the temp the fan has to start running changed in the new BIOS?)
Things in my mind to solve this if you can't help me:
-Tried to find some info on undervolting the CPU, but from the readings and sites I visited I'm guessing the modern CPU's do that themselves, and it isn't possible..
-Place some extra little heatsinks on the cupper rail for some extra cooling. Or is this a bad idea?
-Replace the standard cooling paste with some new cooling paste with a """"high performance"""" (as they call it) brand, maybe that could cut some degrees..
So the main point is that the temperature is getting pretty high in my opinion, and that the frequenty the fan starts has shortened (when I just got it, almost never turned on....... now with Windows 7 much frequentlier). So if anybody experienced this as well, and/or has a solution, please tell me!
    Thank you!

  • Envy 15t 3200 blue screen after graphics install

    Hi everyone,
I'm an IT professional working on a client's HP Envy 15t-3200 notebook PC (Win 7 x64, Intel i7, AMD 7700 series)
He said (he thinks) after installing a recent windows update, it started blue screening on him with a graphics error.
He restored his PC to factory install, and it was working fine until he installed windows updates and the graphics drivers again, receiving the same blue screen graphics error.
I picked up his laptop. I installed a slipstream of windows 7 that I created. Everything worked fine - as soon as I installed his graphics drivers.
First, I had installed the AMD drivers (from AMD, not HP). I thought everything was working fine, until I checked the device manager and saw that the AMD graphics were being disabled, and the laptop was reverting to the generic graphics driver. I also tried the older driver offered on HPs support page.
I uninstalled the AMD graphics, and installed the Intel graphics. As soon as they were installed, upon restarting I received the same original blue screen error and had to result in booting to safe mode and performing system restore.
When I install the AMD graphics without installing Intel graphics, it reverts itself to Generic graphics. The AMD graphics adapter shows a Code 43 in the device manager, stating that the device has stopped working because it has reported problems.
I played around with different versions of AMD graphics which did not resolve the issue, and I installed different versions of the Intel graphics, which still caused a blue screen.
The PC is working ONLY with the generic graphics drivers, which doesn't work for what my client wants to be able to do (gaming).
    I found this - http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c04121863&tmp_task=solveCategory&cc=us&dlc=en&la...
on the troubleshooting page for this notebook, and tried using this solution which also did not resolve the issue.
I've checked temperatures of the laptop and nothing is anywhere near overheating.
I don't know what else to try. My client said he will live with it and just not use it for gaming anymore, but that is not good enough for me - I've offered to continue finding a resolution for him free of charge.
Any help would be very appreciated, this is extremely annoying
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

Reformatting the hard disk and installing the OS again may or may not help.
I would consider rolling back to a system restore checkpoint where the issue all began, testing it and if it works turn off Windows updates on the notebook.
Unfortunately, this notebook model requires replacing the system board. I wish I had better news for you on this, but I do not.
You can see that in the Maintenence & Service guide.
The larger notebooks have the graphics adapter module as a seperately replaceable unit.

  • CPU Fan running really fast even at low temperature.

I bought a HP Envy 700-160eo desktop computer 5 or 6 months ago and for the last 2 months the CPU fan has been running really fast even at low temperature. It's like locked to about 2400RPM as soon as I boot up my PC. Even if I get 30 degrees celcius it runs at 2600RPM. I've tried resetting my CMOS and tried updating my BIOS, but the BIOS update that you are providing me on the HP Envy 700-160eo driver & update section isn't compatible with my PC. The update is for 700-0xx. I've been using the program called Argus Monitor for controlling my fan speed.

I've got the opposite problem, my AMD CPU is running around 55C and the fan hardly ever exceeds 1200 rpm most of the time its running around 950rpm.  I think the 48C to 65C is running on the edge of to hot in my opinion, I like to stay around 35C-40C. Motherboard, video card and hard drive all stay in the 30C range. I tried to speed the fan up with SpeedFan program but it can not interface.
I hope someone can give us a answer, I checked the  UEFI and could not find any setting allowing controlling fan speeds on my ENVY 700-200z/AMD A10 cpu.

  • ENVY 17 1181NR Locking Up Completely

My Envy 17 1181NR has been locking up sometimes several times a day for the past two months. By this I mean the moue and keyboard no longer work as well as the screen freezing. The harddrive and eventually the fans go silent. I can't seem to pinpoint any particular program or activity causing this.
I don't think it's overheating to shutdown, as usually it would give a blue/black screen informing me of that. (Although of course as many other owners of the early Envy 17 models, I'm used to my laptop sitting in temperature ranges of 90-100C. I always use a laptop cooler and I've even replaced the thermal paste but that only worked for a little while.)
It's running Windows 8.1 64bit and as far as I can tell, the drivers are all updated.
I'd really appreciate some troubleshooting or repair help, thank you.

    Hi Russelldc,
Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums and Welcome. I have read your thread on your HP ENVY 17-1181nr Notebook and having issues with it shutting down. Here is a link to testing for hardware failures.
It should point you to any hardware that might be having issues. When have you done a BIOS update?
    Hope this helps.

  • HP Envy trackpad issues

Hi, I hope this problem can be fixed without having to return my laptop. I bought an HP Envy about a week ago and I've been having issues with the touchpad/trackpad or whatever you'd like to call it. My product number is E1P04AAR. The touchpad just simply doesn't behave. It's not precise, it rarely lets me right click, sometimes only clicking it works and sometimes only tapping it works. It jumps around sometimes for no reason at all. This is really bothering me and I hope someone could please help me out or tell me what to do. Thank you.

Hi hamdiabdi, welcome to the HP Forums. I understand that your TouchPad is acting erratically.
Maybe "Adjusting TouchPad or ClickPad pointing sensitivities in Windows 8", "Turning all TouchPad gestures off and on in Windows 8" and "Troubleshooting when TouchPad does not work in Windows 8" will have useful steps to try from this document: Using and Troubleshooting the TouchPad or ClickPad (Windows 8)
Let me know if any of those steps help

  • HP AiO Remote app will not recognize scan and copy function of HP Envy 120

Good morning! HP AiO Remote App is installed on my iPad4 and in the same WiFi network with my HP Envy 120 printer. The printer is recognized by the app and marked with a green led. When I tap on scan or copy in the app menu, it tells me that these functions were available in the app only for printers which provide these features. But HP Envy 120 has both scanner and copier. Hi UJKarl, welcome to the HP Forums. You should be able to scan from the HP AIO Remote App on your Envy 120 printer. You probably just need to power cycle the printer, iPad and router to regain proper function.
Turn off your printer with the power button. Power down the iPad by holding the sleep button down until you get the option to 'slide to power off'. Then disconnect the power cord to your router and count to about 10, and then plug it back in. Once the router comes back online, turn the printer on. When the printer comes back online (blue wi-fi light stops blinking), then power the iPad back up. Try again, and it should work.
Let me know how it turns out.

  • How can I correct for 2 different color temperatures in one image?

    Hi,
In indoor architectural photography one may encounter mixed color temperatures in one image. If one could use gels and lamps to replace incoming natural daylight and force a uniform color temperature (for instance tungsten) then the problem would go away. Yet, sometimes this is not possible or practical and I was exploring what could be accomplished within Photoshop. Here is my proposal ( or beginning of it):
    shoot RAW
generate 2 versions of the image, each corrected for one of the color temperatures present (say WB dropper in "should be neutral" area where daylight dominates and another WB dropper in "should be neutral" area where tungsten dominates)
open them in Photoshop and move one of them as a layer on top of the other version
Try to blend the two layers
in one example, I used Hue blending mode and the photo fixed itself!! However this is not generalizable to other images
I also tried BlendIf for harder images but with no success
I presume selection is then a must which brings up the question:HOW CAN I SELECT DEPENDING ON COLOR TEMPERATURE? I mean, the layer where WB = daylight looks orange-casted in the areas where the main light source is tungsten, while the layer where WB = tungsten looks blue-casted in the areas lit mainly by sunlight. I must believe there should exist a best approach to select say the blue-casted areas or the orange-casted areas, and that approach should be simple if it somehow takes into consideration the predominant cast. I have tried Select Color Range but not very successfully. I just feel there must be a simpler way, taking advantage of the present casts.
    Masks seem also useful
All feedback will be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Juan

If you want to use multiple keepalives for a service, you must use a script. The alternative would be to create 2 content rules, and 2 sets of services, one for port 80 (or whatever) and one for port 443 (or whatever), and use http for one and ssl for the other.

  • Is it possible to upgrade/add a graphics card to a Hp Envy dv7 dv7-7243cl laptop

I've been doing a lot of research lately, to mostly no avail, about whether or not my HP Envy dv7 dv7-7243c laptop can have a dedicated GPU added to it, as currently it only has the integrated Intel HD 4000 Mobile graphics card.
Mostly I've come across the unfortunate agreement that most laptops cannot have their graphics cards upgraded/swapped out, since the graphics card is soldered on to the motherboard. However, after talking to an HP "support representative", they said they believed it was possible to add a graphics card, as long as it is compatible with the  Motherboard my computer has.
Furthermore, after finding the maitenence and service manual online for my computer ( http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c03221579.pdf ) it says that it could have come with switchable graphics, specifically the Nvidia Geforce 630M or 650M.
So I am wondering, is it really at all possible to add a dedicated graphics card, either by having switchable graphics or something else? Or am I stuck with the integrated Intel HD graphics?
If I can upgrade/add a new card, where would I be able to find/buy a compatible one, and would I be able to install it myself or would I need to go to a local computer repair?
My laptop is the HP Envy dv7 dv7-7243cl Entertainment Notebook.
It has an Intel Core i7- 3630QM CPU @ 2.40 GHz, 12 GB memory, 150 GB SSD hard drive, 1 TB hard drive (5400 rpm).
I am currently running Windows 8.1 Home Premium SP1 (64-bit).

    You're very welcome.
I am not a PC repair tech by trade or training.
Other than the replacement motherboard, and fan and heatsink combination, I wouldn't know if any other parts are required.
The parts you need are listed in chapter 3 of the service manual with the part numbers.
I also don't know if the boards come with the windows 8 product key included in the BIOS.
There may be multiple motherboards listed, so make sure you get the right one.
Same for the fan and heatsink.
