Temperature monitoring utility - QUESTION

Has anyone else out there run both TempMonitor and CoreDuoTemp at the same time on an (Intel, duh) MacBook? The reason I ask is because I am, and I get drastically different readings from each. Like 64F versus 84F. The same disparity occurs when switching to Celcius units too.
Is there something about running both at the same time that can cuase one (or the other, or both) to not function properly?
Thanks in advance!

  • Internal temperature monitoring utility?

Is there any monitoring software (similar to Activity Monitor) that detects whether key components such as the CPU and hard-drive are running at a reasonable temperature or are overheating?
I believe that temperature-monitoring sensors are present inside the casing so in theory what I am asking about should be possible.

Hi, KDS-KDS. My experience has been that temperature-reporting utilities such as the one linked by roam above (which I've tested) are only able to find a single sensor in my Tibook, the same generation as yours. That sensor watches only the hard drive, which is normally one of the cooler parts of a Tibook. Though there clearly are additional sensors in the machine, it appears that their output is unavailable to (or perhaps isn't readable by) such reporting software, for some reason. Owners of other Mac models have reported quite varied results, from highly satisfactory (several sensors detected) to no sensors detected at all.
This question came up several times in the Tibook discussion forums a while back, and my recollection is that no Tibook owner, regardless of which of the four generations his machine belonged to, ever found any temp-reporting software that could provide a readout on the CPU. If you do find one, please post in over there and let us know.

  • Question for anyone who uses temperature monitor

i think my temperature monitor is broken..i had it on my last macbook and it worked fine..but this one says my computer is constantly at 21*Celcius...and i've tried uninstalling it and reinstalling it..what is the best temperature monitor?

None of these these temperature monitors are going to work right with the current Intel Duo Core chips. It's an Intel processor design fault. I got this info from the Hardware Monitor developer.
Q: I have a Mac with an Intel Core Solo or Core Duo processor.
Sometimes, the temperature readings seems to "hang" and are no longer
being refreshed. Is this a problem with the application?
A: No, this problem is caused by an internal design flaw of current
versions of Intel Core processors. The Digital Thermal Sensors may
stop working when the processor returns from a C3/C4 power saving
state. Intel plans to correct this hardware bug for future steppings
    of the CPU.
Intel refers to this hardware problem as Erratum AE18. For detailed
information, please see Intel document 30922204

  • Temperature Monitor Alert:Memory controller heatsink Results!!!

    Hello all...
I have a question about the Memory Controller Heatsink sensor in the temparature monitor and I would appreciate it if you could shed any light in my problem.
Well it was long time since I checked my temperatures on my G5 DP 2.3 so yesterday while I was into some MP3 encoding I heard the fans making alot of noise ,not something unbearable but not the usual silence behaviour I was used to even under heavy load and with the nap off.
So because of that noise I decide to check it with the temperature monitor but nothing unusual came up except...yes you guess it the Memory Controller heatsink.
An alert came up and inform me that the temp was over 75 C/167 F.
The threshold was by default at 75 C/167 F.
Let me add that it's summer here and a hot one at 37 C and the room is not airconditioning, but it was exactly the same one year ago(June 2005)and I never came up with an alert.
Also I have no problem with the rest indications.
So what do you think is it normal or may I have a broken fan?
And finally what is the Memory Controller Heatsink?
    Thanx in advance!

The memory controller heatsink is shown, with the associated cooling tubes and fins, in the right-hand photo of the 'back' of the main logic board here
    http://homepage.mac.com/jerrycube/jerrycubepix/22601bluebord.jpg
Air is pulled over the back of the main logic board and through the cooling fins, by the fan in a plastic housing, at 90deg to all the other fans, behind the hard drives.
This fan is called "Main Logic Board Backside" by Hardware Monitor in this ancient DP2.0 - and is showing "20%" in 22deg C room temperature. "Memory Controller Heatsink" is at 54deg C.
37deg C is above the specified max. 'Operating Temperature' of 35deg C shown here
    http://support.apple.com/specs/powermac/PowerMac_G5_Late2005.html
I think it would probably be advisable to find some way of lowering the temperature of the room the G5 is in...

  • Best Temperature Monitoring Program?

Hey all, first time posting in the forums.
I recently got a mid-2012 MBP for college, so of course I immediately began putting games like Borderlands and GTA:SA on it. It runs anything I throw at it beautifully, but it gets awfully hot while it does. I know this is common for MBP's, even up to 90 degrees celsius, but it is something a tad worrisome when it gets over 80 (some games get it there every time....). So I've been trying to monitor it to at least be sure I'm not letting it get up there too often or for too long.
So had a few questions about temperature monitoring with Macs. I've currently got 3 programs running monitor temperature and system usage- System Pal, iStat Pro, and SMCfancontrol (which I also kick up a bit when playing the more GPU intensive games). The problem is that all three show different temperatures. Right now SystemPal reads 41 degrees celsius, SMCfancontrol reads 49, and iStat Pro has temps between 30 and 42 degrees. Which one's right? Is there a more accurate/definitive program for temp monitoring?
If it makes any difference, I usually play projected onto a 32 in LG TV using a thunderbolt to HDMI. I know this is more GPU intensive to begin with, but after going HD it feels a necessary evil.
If anyone happens to know of ways to keep temps down while gaming, monitor temps during full screen apps/games, or ways to monitor GPU usage (right now I have none ) I'd greatly appreciate advice on that too!
    Thanks so much for answers!

Try iStat Menus 4.02 or Temperature Monitor 4.96 or Hardware Monitor 4.96.

  • The switch from coreduo temp, to temperature monitor

OK, it seems more accurate, allows to monitor both cores separately, bit i miss the processor activity level in the menu bar, anyone know of a replacement for this?

Thanks for your concern but you can't save me any money as I've already spent it!
As for the rest of your post, you may be happy to blindly roast yourself assuming that all is well but others have a little more curiosity. Yes, the MBPs run hot but they shouldn't run unbearably so. That there are many who reckon their MBPs are way too hot and many others who don't raises the question of "how hot is too hot?". CoreDuoTemp, Temperature Monitor and Hardware Monitor (the full version of Temperature Monitor) are tools to help answer this question. Comparing results with others will either reassure users or confirm their suspicions that something is amiss. Most MBPs fall into the "well, it's hot but it's a high performance machine" category. Some need a little attention to the thermal paste issue to get them to this level. A few have even been found to run so hot (>100C) that the chips clock their speed down to avoid frying themselves, severely compromising performance.
The point to take home here is that some people, myself included, are curious enough to want to know about their computer's workings and readings from diagnostic tools like this most definitely do make a difference as to how we view and operate our machines.

  • MSI AMD 890GX and Temperature Monitoring

Bear with me if this is a silly question to ask, this is my first computer build so I have a lot to learn.
I'm wanting to get a 5.25 in bay temperature monitor and was hoping there might be a port or connector somewhere on the motherboard to give me the bios reading of the CPU and/or northbridge temperature to external hardware. I, obviously, have the 890GX board and the Athlon II 3X but before I try any overclocking I want to be able to see a true temperature reading.
I've looked at a few fan controllers and temperature displays that have probes for their readings but I'm not fully convinced that readings in the area of the CPU or northbridge would be adequate, safety-wise.
    Thanks

I have nothing against the BIOS readings, in fact that's what I'm interested in. My complaint about temperature probes is that its only going to give me a reading of the surrounding area rather then a direct reading of the cpu temperature.
I want to know if theres anyway to use one of the jUSB ports to connect to a piece of hardware to display the bios temperature readings. I'm sure this would involve a little bit (or a lotta bit) of coding to accomplish if its possible at all but I'd like to know if anyone has any information about hardware to do this.

  • KT880 temperature monitoring (in)accuracy?

Just powered up a KT880 Delta, and in the BIOS pc health status screen the system temperature is listed as 39C/102F.  This is excessively inaccurate on the high side since the motherboard is being tested outside the case in free room air and the room is only 23C/73F.  So the system temperature is reading about 16C/29F high!
I'm also puzzled because the CPU is reading 44C/111F at idle with a SLK-900A and decent fan, which seems high.  So now I'm wondering if the cpu reading is also inaccurate on the high side due to the odd system temperature, or whether I have cpu mounting problems.
    * Do other KT880 Delta owners have similarly inaccurate system temperature readings?
    * Where is the system temperature thermal diode on a KT880?  Is the system temperature a "case" temperature or is it a thermal monitoring point underneath the cpu?  If it is under the cpu socket it would therefore match the cpu temperature (see next question).
    * Is the cpu temperature from the AthlonXP on-die thermal diode or from a motherboard mounted thermal diode under the cpu socket?  The manual does not state.
    * Does BIOS 1.8 fix this?  I am using 1.7, and 1.8 does not list any temperature related fixes in the release notes.
    * Also just curious, but what cpu idle temperatures do you get?  This is a XP3200/200FSB with no over-clocking.
Any other comments that would help will be appreciated.  Thanks.

    Hello allank!
I like your choice of case etc. Have the same, but the supplied single fan wasn't enough for my config, much due to a lack of fan on the processor. I think the CPU should suffice, though 18 amps on 12 volt is no overkill.
Multiplier of 11 is correct, but I've come to learn it is normally better to set to Auto. Found this at http://217.115.198.3/content/topic/25225/

yeah my setup works great too (200x11) xp2500->xp3200, and it out benches another xp2500->xp3200 (200x11) setup i have based on a kt600 epox board by almost 800 points (3dmark2k1)
my only gripe is the board runs well hotter than the epox board
    msi board -> mobo 31c, cpu 40c (slk900a heatsink)
    epox board -> mobo 21c, cpu 30c (stock heatsink&fan)
even with the far better heatsink (theoretically) the msi board/cpu run much hotter than the epox board/cpu
also to note - i had to up my vcore from the default 1.65v to 1.675v to insure total stability, just upped it one tiny notch, but that leveled out my prime 95 issues, and fixed some oddball boot problems

Re: MSI K7N2 DELTA ILSR Nforce2 chat info
Wayne, one word about your temps. You say that the MSI runs hotter than the Epox, but I'm guessing that it doesn't. Almost every mobo manufacturer places their CPU temp sensor in a different spot. I was looking at a board in a computer store earlier today, and the sensor was out by the ZIF bracket, just like on my old Biostar M7NCD. But when I recieved my new Abit NF7 *drools over his sweet board, that he got for just $80.... then proceeds to make love to http://newegg.com* I took a look at my socket, and noticed the sensor was almost directly underneith the CPU die. Seeing as how calculations are done mostly on the CPU die, that will tend to run hotter than the rest of the chip. Thus, your MSI is not running hotter, it just has it's sensor in a more accurate place. Feel grateful!
    Sincerely,
    Lord Coldfire

  • Is it possible to transfer the temperature readings through "Serial I/O" port of Lakeshore temperature monitor?

With this monitor, you can have 2 analog outputs that you can transfer to the computer by using DAQ boards. In my case, I need temperature measurements at 3 different locations so I need 3 analog outputs, which is not possible with this device.
However, the monitor can also store temperature data in its memory and print the data. What I need is not to print the data but send the data to the computer somehow in digital form and postprocess it. I am using the "serial I/O" port to connect the device to the computer. I think I can do some configurations on the temperature monitor with the drivers in the link (http://sine.ni.com/apps/utf8/niid_web_display.download_page?p_id_guid=0241DD1B3AAF0341E0440003BA7CCD... ) but I am not sure if the device recognize the commands that I send through the I/O port.
Any advice on how to transfer (in digital form) the stored data on the monitor to the computer?

    http://sine.ni.com/apps/utf8/niid_web_display.download_page?p_id_guid=0241DD1B3AAF0341E0440003BA7CCD...
and the temperature monitor is the one in this link: http://www.lakeshore.com/products/cryogenic-temperature-monitors/model-218/Pages/Overview.aspx
Actually, it says in the manual that the stored data can be send to either printer or they can be retrieved by the computer interface. However, there is not enough information about how to perform this task.
I am using labview to read the data for the analog outputs and the drivers in the first link are also in labview language. But with those drivers, I cannot retrieve the data to the computer.
I will check MAX to test the communication with the device, though. Thanks for the advice!
