You'd probly have to build a circuit that would allow you to adjust the speed on your fan independantly, powered by your PSU. That could lead you to further problems tho and I don't know that I would recommend it really...any/all draw from your PSU diminishes the power available for normal functions of the MB/CPU/Memory/HD's etc...now if you got a 500W supply I don't think you would have to worry too much about it tho LOL
You might look around for a better cooler that runs say 6K RPM's and utilize the switches that I've seen out there to keep it quiet when you aren't power gaming or whatever...I've used ASUS's Q function on one of my machines and it seems to work quite well but I don't trust it enuff yet to leave the BIOS setting on and let it monitor on it's own...I'm surprised that someone hasn't come up with a dimmer switch type of control in place of the 3-position switch I've seen some ppl use...would make more sense and you could get alot more of a precise setting from that than with a switch IMHO of course heheheh

  • Cpu temperature without fancontrol

Hi, after i installed mavericks, awesome! i clean up my mac and i removed fancontrol.
now, whit fancontrol, the cpu temperature in idle is 40-45 c°, fan rpm abot 3000-3500 and when i open a game, the temperature reach about 80 or more but immediately the fan rpm change to 5500-6000 and it's ok.
whitout fan control, the cpu temperature in idle is 50 c°, fan control always 2000 rpm and the same try with a game, the fan rpm change to 6000 very slowly after the cpu temperature reach 90-95 c°...
i had that problem since i bought this air then i ever kept fan control!
of course now the battery reach 4 and half hours or 5 than before with fancontrol (2 and half hours), but are you sure it's not dangerous?!

You call it a problem. I don't see a problem.
Not only are you are not exceeding the safe operating temp, but it is entirely expected to hover in that area for many types of games.
While not a "gaming rig", the Air is quite competent for many gaming purposes. Just don't expect it to leisurely lope like a Macbook Pro. The CPU will indeed be pushed rather hard in these circumstances. Sure, you may be able to push the fan harder, and acheive a slightly lower operating temp, but I don't see the point.
The fan itself, being a moving part that you can't do much to maintain, is something I'd rather preserve UNLESS the temps were so high, and my need so strong, that I just had to push things beyond the stock cooling system's effectiveness.
Your worries, pertaiing to your post here, are rather unfounded.

  • How do you check CPU temperature w/o using Bios?

I saw many many posts about this and just want to make sure I get the correct software to do this (If I can)  I'd like to be able to check my temperature without going to the BIOS.

I saw several references to speedfan but just want to make sure I get the appropriate one. I just got this PC and would like to check the temp over the next few days just to see how everything is doing.  Thank You .

  • Satellite X205-S9349 - Question about GPU temperature

    Hi,
I purchased an *Satellite X205-S9349* approx. 10 months ago an recently installed a temperature monitor for the nVidia 8700M GT card. While using 3d modeling applications I recorded the average temperature at *97 degrees Celsius*.
Idling the computer results in a temperature of *60 degrees*. The computer is present in an air conditioned room, who's average temperature is *19 degrees*.
Is this the normal operating temperature of the X205-S9349 when on full load?
Can this temperature damage my computer?
Is there anything I can do to reduce the temperature without voiding the warranty provided by Toshiba?
    Thanks in advance,
    Pabst
PS: I have propped the back of my computer up so that air can easily flow through the bottom.

    Hello Pabst
In my opinion there is no reason for panic. If you use original Toshiba display driver your notebook is protected and if the notebook will come up to critical temperature level it will shut down automatically to avoid hardware damage.
This with propping back side is great idea. Sometimes I do the same. The notebook can be cooled much better. And one more thing: do not believe always what those third part applications show.
    Good luck!

  • Normal operating temperature - A31 2.0Ghz

I do not understand how designers ever thought that a machine that is only 80cm away from your ears can have a fan that it audible.
Nevertheless I am trying to use Thinkpad Fan Control (v0.18) to minimise my fan activity. Removing the battery or setting the BIOS to low speed "helps" but also means a higher load, and thus more heat!!
I am not sure if the idle CPU temperature without the fan running is normal around 58C. With the fan in BIOS mode it stays around 42C, but it still seems rather high to me. Is it possible that it needs new theral paste or the heat sink is not set well?

I guess this is some improvement:
on BIOS mode the CPU goes down to 33C in idle and will stay around in 51C with no fan using TPFC.
Straight writing in the word processor never makes the fan go on, but with 5+ tabs and my database open, it will go to 60C then start the fan. That probably means that watching video on this machine is a no go!
My sister, cat owner and thus good experience with cleaning out computers, took a look. She noticed that  around the CPU there was a burnt capacitor C508. It ain`t broke so no fixing, but that may be related to the defective USB ports or why it will not run from the battery. She probably also tightened the fan or put the the thermal paste on better...
The update to Thinkpad Fan Control did not make much difference, but the interface is nicer. I tried the BIOS 1.13 but it was not accepted, but 1.10 went through fine. In either one there were no indications of changes to temperature control. Power here is stable but still a risk considering my battery (or motherboard) does not work.
As for running processes, I login in a restricted account to avoid having to install an anti-virus/spyware and I used CCleaner to diasable most startup programs, and lastly using services.msc, I disabled a few that I never use. (wifi – automatic updates- help)

  • Can NI myDAQ ai0 and ai1 be connected directly with thermocouples to measure temperature???

    Hi,
I am trying to use myDAQ to realize both temperature measurement and digital output.
By reading this page I have learned that how I can create a task for temperature measurement using thermocouple with a certain NI device.
    http://www.ni.com/white-paper/14338/en/
What I found to be really interesting is that when I create a task for myDAQ temperature measurement using a thermocouple when my NI myDAQ is connected with my PC, two AI ports ai0 and ai1 both appears in the create task window!!
I never found any information from NI myDAQ manual that "AI0 and AI1" can be connected directly with a thermocouple to measure temperature without using additional conditioning system. But this window suggests that myDAQ can be used in this way, is it?
I am still trying to do it this way, and I'll post some results here again.
I would be really appreciate if anyone could confirm or disprove my guess. Thank  you.

  • Opening notebook without canceling warranty

    Hey
My notebook (ProBook  4540s) have still high temperature without stress. Formerly I could play GTA 4 on very high all day without BSOD. Now my stream from holes of my laptop is much smaller and more hot and i have BSOD after 15 min. of playing Deadpool or 30 min. of GTA 4. Can I disassemble down parts of my computer for cleaning( without canceling warranty, I have standart warranty to 10.08.2013 and Care pack to 2015.)

  • Intel core i7 Q720 running at a temperature of 85-99 degrees.

Hello there. I bought myself a hp pavilion dv7-4085eb in september.
When I bought it I had problems with drivers, contacted HP support but couldn't fix the problem so I bought a clean windows installation and installed that on my laptop. After doing this I had no more driver problems.
From the start I noticed that the laptop was running very hot but now I am getting quite concerned.
I heard from many people that having a core temperature between 85-99 degrees is not good for the health of the laptop and won't last long. I measured the temperature with coretemp. So far my laptop has shut down 3 times because it was getting to hot.
While I am on my laptop I make sure it is in a ~20 degree so the vents can work properly.
    The temperatures:
    - Laptop startup (after 5 min): 55-65 degrees (idle)
    - Laptop while playing game: 95-99 degrees (idle)
    - Laptop after playing game: 75 degrees (idle)
    - Laptop while watching movies: 80 degrees (idle)
Does anyone else have the similar temperatures or? Should I send it up or?
    This question was solved.

    I have a DV7-4010TX.
    On idle (browsing,email, etc..)  I have 50 degrees C
I try playing Baldur's Gate 2, and it jumps up to 80 degress C according to CoreTemp, with only 50% load on one core... other 3 cores are at 0% (or so) and 72 degressC.. And the fan is pumping hot air out like a hair dryer... expensive hair dryer....
I had the HP warranty service technician look at it today, and all they did was replace the heat sink/fan (for the second time now)... I don't think they understand that the problem is not in the EXTRACTION of heat, but in the GENERATION of heat.. Basic physics...
I keep telling them the heat sink & fan are working fine..and they should focus on the heat GENERATION.. but I seem to be speaking ancient french or something.. as they insist on replacing the fan & heat sink !!!
By the way, Baldur's Gate 2 works fine on my OLD DELL single core laptop.... I am nit happy with this HP.. I wish I had bought another brand now...
And yet they keep saying the DV7 does not have any "offocial" heat problem, which may be true, and I may have a dud.. but it is frustrating that this is happening !!!! will keep you posted with my dealings with HP Warranty service.
    Not a happy customer...

  • CPU temperature utilities...

I've used three different utilities to check CPU temperatures (Core 2 E6600, the heatsink is Zalman 9700LED):
    pcAlert4
    Core Temp v0.94
    Intel Thermal Analysis Tool (TAT)
The Orthos Stress Prime provided 100% CPU utilization in addition to TAT. All three of the utilities showed different temperatures under the same load; Intel's TAT showed the highest and MSI's pcAlert4 the lowest temperatures. That's fine, although MSI really should get their own stuff right.
I've also noticed during testing that it doesn't make much of a difference, if the Zalman heatsink's fan runs at low, or high RPM; well, other than noise factor. The differences between the low/high RPMs from the temperature's perspective are 2-3 degree Celsius the most for both idle and 100% CPU utilization. That's hardly a reason to run the fan at high speed, especially when the temperature tops out at 55 degree Celsius with 100% CPU utilization for a prolonged time. At idle time the temperature of the CPU is around 32 degree Celsius, depending on which utility is red.
Is this normal for the Core 2 CPU, or neither of the utilities show the actual temperature of the CPU? I'm leaning toward the latter one.
    TIA...

Eeh.. warning. When I stopped my CPU fan my computer eventually crashed because Jmicron got screwed by heat and all my IDE HDDs disconnected while in Windows.
It took a moment to get Jmicron to detect HDDs again after shutdown, and once after that drives disconnected again in windows. Now it seems to work ok.
Tho maybe because I didn't bother to close my computer case, and that side panel has 2x120mm fans mounted on it, so there was only PSU's cooler running
Well, thanks for the warning; I did close the side panel, after I disconnected the heatsink's fan
I don't use JMicron; the four SATA drives are connected to Intel's controller. Additionally, the drives are in a separate compartment from the motherboard with it's own 120mm case fan to cool them.
The CPU temperature without the heatsink fan is 34/32 degree Celsius for core 1 and 2, which is just couple of degrees higher than with the fan running. Maxing out both cores to 100% with two instances of Ortho Beta running raises the temperature to 52 and 50 respectively. Playing GRAW without the heatsink fan running results in around 48 degree Celsius, which also just couple of degree more than the heatsink fan is running.
My initial suspicion of the two 120mm case fans around the heatsink are the reason why it doesn't really matter at what speed the heatsink fan is running at was correct. Yes, the case panels were in place and the three 120mm case fans and the power supply's fan were moving the air evidently rather well.

And if you are just curious. You will find some screen captures from my testing in this thread. (bottom of 1st page).

Nice experiment, which probably would've been better if you close the side panel.
My machine is still running just fine without the heatsink fan; the Zalman 9700LED is pretty darn good, it can keep the CPU at normal temperature without its fan. The Antec P180 case helps a lot, it has great airflow and not even noisy.
Well, this was fun; time to turn on the heatsink fan. I just feel better if it is running...

  • Shutdown NOT due to heat

Whenever I play GTA V on optimal graphics (via GeForce Experience) it powers off after 5-10 minutes and then reboots automatically after another 2-3 mins. It s definitely not an overheating issue, since I know the laptop has been hotter before and I checked the temperatures with coretemp. I suspect it might be a power related problem.
As far as I can recall, it does not happen when I run the game in safe mode, xcept if I then run it on DirectX 10.1 instead of version 11.

  • Do I have to reinstall the system again after changing the CPU ?

    Hi !
    Today I replaced the old CPU  P3 650 copermine @ 866 mhz with the P3 1000mhz.
    The bus is on 133mhz.
I am not sure from where the problem is rising, but i am sure that before the change I was not having this problem. Now when I listening to the music , in time to time I experience some skipping or freezing in sound (very quickly) like when you are running out of memory or when u opening a lot of programs and the cpu loads 100%...something like that and this affect the sound.
Does anyone know if when changing the cpu, its better to reinstall the system again ?  Is it neccesary ?
    Thanks

The heatsing on this cpu in foxon. It is a passive heatsing. The working temperature is about 43 degrees celzius. Quite normal. the cpu is not overclocked.
I tryed to lower the bus speed from 133 to 126mhz and then I dont have thoose problems. Really weird, because with P3 650 overclocked to 866 / 133 host bus with a golden orb heatsing I had quite the same temperatures without problems.  I tryed also to raise host bus to 135 mhz , but then this problems comes again.  So now I am running a P3 1000mhz @ 950mhz on 126mhz bus speed. Seems that I dont have much choises. if I want to use 1ghz cpu on my mobo , i had to down a little bit a bus speed from 133mhz/33mhz (pci) to 126 mhz/31mhz (pci).
Can enyone tell me... what do you think : which configuration was faster:
    1. P650/100 mhz Oc to 866mhz/133mhz    - pci 33mhz
    2. P 1000mhz/133 mhz  adjusted to 945mhz/126mhz bus speed  - pci 31mhz
    Thanks for your replies.
I dont know how many it counts the pci frequqency. this frequancy is adjusted itself and I cant change it.
The PSU in a 450w newer one. Some strange sounds comes out of it. Also when it was brand new. I replaced it with the same one , but it is the same.
    Thanks for the suggestions.

  • MacBook Pro Mid-2012 Overheating?

I just got my MacBook Pro Mid-2012 less than a week ago, but I am already having problems with my MacBook Pro heating up.  It gets to a temperature that almost burns my hand when I touch the bottom.  My old MacBook didn't do this.  I was running Windows last night and it just shut down, presumably because the computer overheated.  However, I have no idea how to measure the temperature without installing additional software.  How do I do this?  It is normal for the MacBook to do this?  If I take it to the Apple Store and they agree that there is a problem, should I just wait until WWDC to have them swap it out (potentially for a new MacBook)?
I also cannot tell if the fan is actually working.
    Thanks!

As your MacBook Pro was bought only a week ago, return it and get a new one. It's not normal because your MacBook turns on fans automatically when the temperature rises. Moreover, if you run Apple Hardware Test, it will probably give you an error referring to the fan, so it's better to return that computer and get another that works correctly

  • What are the terminal commands to list all plugins, extensions, etc?

I remember a while ago reading a thread on diagnosing kernel panics and such, where someone listed a number of commands (I think there were four separate terminal commands) which produced lists of plugins, daemons, background enhancers, extensions etc which could sap resources or drive up temperature without necessarily showing up in activity monitor or anything like that.
Anyone know what these commands are? I'm having some serious overheating problems at the moment when doing nothing but for instance watching a youtube video with no other processes running so I'd like to get these dumps and see if there's anything installed which could be causing trouble.

  • How to tell if SMC firmware is installed properly...

    Hi
I live a bit far from my Apple Store so I thought I'd ask on the forum before I did the whole Genius Bar - back- and - forth trip.
I recently had my logic board replaced along with a rattling fan.
After which i found my MBP (2.16 core duo from last july) to run much quieter and cooler. I noticed that my fans came on more often and heard them come on.
Everything seemed fine. Then I had my bottom casing replaced (because of a scratch I found after having my logic board replaced -- which i wasn't too happy about but AppleCare helped me out).
After picking up my MBP again. It seems like the fans dont come on as often anymore and the temperatures are as high as it was before i got my logic board replaced--but i don't hear a noise.
Would anyone know if there is a way to check if the SMC firmware update is properly installed? I am wondering why the fans dont come on as often . I've been using SMC fan control lately which helps but I would rather my MBP control its own temperature without me having to adjust the fan speeds. It woudl be most helpful when running programs in Windows XP bootcamp mode.
Any advice would be great thanks.
    Love O.

If it helps to know the fan speed, you might try Hardware monitor: http://www.bresink.de/osx/HardwareMonitor.html
The fans could be running at low speeds, in which case it's very soft. To really hear it, you can add load, say by opening a terminal and running
    yes > /dev/null
That should use up CPU, raise temperature, increase fan speed and you should be able to hear it. If the max temperature is much higher than before or the fans really don't get switched on, then I would talk to Apple.
