Template vs notification rules

Hello
couple of questions about grid 11g
1 what happens when you apply a template to target ? does it overwrite exisitng out of box notification?
2 are there any dependencies between monitroing template/ notificaiton rules? can i create rule to send out notificaiton for a codition(metric) that is not in the template?
thanks

1. Applying a template changes the thresholds and drives when the system raise a critical or warning alert. The notification rules are independent of templates and drive what action we take when a critical or warning alert comes in. I am not quite sure what you mean by "overwrite existing out of box notifications" - but in general, templates and notification rules are related but independent as described above.
2. See above. You can always create a rule to send notifications for alerts on any metric. If the alert triggers - it will do what's requested.
Of course, you need to set thresholds appropriately on the target to raise a warning or critical alert - either by directly changing thresholds or using a template.
Hope that helps.when I create notification I see all metrics even those which I haven't configured, why oracle displays those and doesn't hide them? a little bit curious because its misleading

  • Monitoring templates and notification rules

    Hello
I was able to create monitoring templates defining the thresholds I needed and create de notifications rules.
Now where can I see them being used ? How can I see the results of a template? Where do the notifications rules publish the information?
    Thanks

    Hello,
I want to apply the template to a db instance and I would like to see that information on the db instance home page on the Category alerts.
Can't I do that? The templates only work if I define a notification method?
    Thanks

  • UDM template and Notification Rules

    Hi,
As i am first time working with EM grid control have few question upon organizing some things for better feasibility. I am familiar with the creation of a UDM template and creating notification rules. But I am lacking in proper organization of these thing. I have been provided the events (customized) categorized say security, performance, etc. So i have created a UDM for these events separately for testing. So to create template, how shall i proceed, is there any standard process or anything that would be helpful in all means.
I was having different ways, like as i already created UDM's
    (1) create template for each event (UDM and out-of-box),
    (2) create template for events by category (UDM and out-of-box) ,
    (3) Create one standard template for all the UDM's and out-of-box events ,
    (4) Create templates based on OS UDM , SQl UDM and outof box metric events.
    (5) Create templates based on Host and database events.
these are of few different way in which i am having in my mind. But not sure of feasibility solution.
Also if am not wrong templates are only for applying to targets and they are not related w.r.t notification. So w.r.t notification I would like to know is that it would be better to categorize them with in default rules or make separate rules.
Sorry for such series of question.
    Thanks.

Thanks Rob. I came across one more thing while i am working with metrics. I see the metrics and policy settings pages differs w.r.t database version's,
Say for example, with in 11g database metrics and policy settings i see following metrics,
    (1) Access Violation and (2) Access Violation Status, but i dont see these in 10g version database metrics and policy settings page. In 10g i see Following metrics
    (3) Active Sessions Waiting: I/O and (4) Active Sessions Waiting: Other which i see in 11g version database metrics and policy settings page but can't see on 9i
version database metrics and policy settings page.
So under such circumstances if i create a template w.r.t target type say database, that would have only the selected version while creating the database. Is that like do we need to create template for each database instance ?
As i see we have an option of including the metrics present in another database version too, but if we add those into one what would be result as few metrics one instance is not aware of and also i see one situation where in one of the metrics to check for the database instance status differs from 9i and 10G ( i mean the naming conventions) In this case if i add both , we are going to get an alert twice as i presume. How to handle such situations while creating a standard template.
Please advise if this need to be created w.r.t target type how to create it. Is that we can create w.r.t each version of database instanc target type too.
    Thanks.

  • Diff btwn Monitoring Template and Notification Rules

Can anyone tell me the difference btwn when I should use a Monitoring Template and when I should use Notification Rules? I understand that there is a calendar setup for Notification Rules, but other than that, when should I use which? They look like they do the same thing.

With Monitoring templates, you set them once and apply them to multiple targets across your entire enterprise. So it gvies you a faclity to standardise stuff. For instance, you can create one template each for different database environments (e.g Development, Testing and Production). So each time you discover a new databases, instead of going in to database t manually define new metrics for the lot, you simply apply your already created template to them. Another example advantage is that each time your team decides that all production database tablespaces should change from a Critical of 90% to 85%, you simply change the template and reapply instead of doing it one-by-one on each database.
With Notification Rules, you are choosing the targets and the conditions with which you want to receive notifications. For instance, you have set all your Critical and Warning thresholds for say % Tablespace Space Used. When this threshold is reached, you want to be notified using the notification method you have set. Say via email or sms. So you create a notification rule that includes this metric, specify the notification method and indicate which administrators receive that notification.

  • How to Define Multiple Notification Rules for Different E-Mail Channels?

In C4C we can define a notification rule for New tickets, for example, that provides an acknowledgement of receiving the customer's e-mail.
This works great for a single support team, but what if we have multiple support teams, each with their own e-mail address, and each with unique requirements for their auto-acknowledgement?
When setting up a new notification rule, there doesn't appear to be any option to define the e-mail channel, service and support team value, or a "from" e-mail address.
We're on-boarding over a dozen e-mail teams, and I'd hate to tell them that they'll all have to share one auto-acknowledgement template from a single do-not-reply address.
Does anyone know if this is possible to:
Define the e-mail channel or service and support team as an condition in the notification rules.
Define the outgoing "from" e-mail address for a notification rule.
Thanks for any insight the community might have!

    Hi Mike,
As of release 1402, your analysis is correct.  The out-of-the-box notification rules do not include the "incoming email channel" as one of fields on which to build condition, and all notifications are sent from a common do-not-reply address.
You can easily overcome the first limitation by using the SDK.  For example, when the ticket is created you could set an extension field based on the email channel, and then use the extension field to define different notification rules, using different templates.  All extension fields are automatically available to be used as conditions.
Thank you for your feedback and for bringing this item to our attention.  We will definitely keep this in mind as we plan for future releases.

  • User Defined Metric and Notification rules

I've created a user defined metric to list the age of my backups. My warning is set to 24 hours and my critical threshold is set to 48 hours. The metric is working fine.
I want to be alerted if the metric goes critical for e.g.. When I go to Notification rules, under metric i don't see my user defined metric. This is GC 10g R2 10.2.0.2.
    Anyone has seen this?
    Thanks.

You have to create notification template according to your requirements and define respective metrice with required threshold values.

  • Define Notifications Rule for a specific users

    Hi Guys,
I'm trying to implement email notifications on EMGC 10G and I'm wondering how to do this:
    1) I created a Group to aggregate my development targets
    2) I created a Role to aggregate the DBAs responsible for Development targets in group above.
    3) I created a Template with all metrics/policies needed for this group and associated it to this group.
    3) Now I want to this DBAs (and only this DBAs) receive notifications by email every time a threshold/policy event happen on any target belonging this group.
    Any suggestion?
    Cheers,
    Jonny

Now create a notification rule and subscribe that user for that rule ..

  • Why cant we see all metrics as part of notification rules

I am trying to set up notification rules..
I created monitoring templates and setup some metrics..
I am able to see these metrics as part of All Metrics
but when i go to add them via Notification Rule to alert to my email
    I dont see these metrics
Please let me know, if i am missing any steps..
    Thanks
    Satish

There are some metrics, which are reported in "all Metrics" but can not have thresholds defined in "metric and policy settings".
You can only add those metrics to the notification rule, which can have thresholds set. In my environment there are 235 database metrics, which can be added to the notification rule.
Which metric in particular would you want to include in the notification rule?

  • Monitoring Templates Versus Notifications

please correct me if I am wrong, when we set up Notifications, OEM with use the default metrics to send email if errors/warnings occur. what if, I have monitoring templates set up with our own metric, how does this monitoring templates work together with notifications? I guess, my question is how can I assign the monitoring Templates so I can get email based from the metric I assigned.
I am a little confused about how these two worked, if something can give my some insight, I would greatly appreciated.

I generally see monitoring templates and notifications as two separate entities. First evaluate if some of your metrics are better managed as a UDP, user defined policy, than metric. I have templates for production, non-production, hpux, linux, aix, etc. I then apply that template to the corresponding policy for updates or changes in standards. I then would go to preferences and notifications/rules and create a notification rule. I generally create one notification rule per user based on that user's group of clients. That way when someone is out another DBA can cover by simply adding that target to their group.
Hope that answered your question or wasn't too much info. Let me know if you have anything further.
    Cheers,

  • Notification rule of type "system" in OEM 11g

Having used OEM 10g I'm now using 11g. When I create a new notification rule one of the options is to use a type of system, as I have a system defined I thought "oh goody that will be useful !" unfortunately not as there is no option to add metrics policies jobs etc and so we get "Availability, Metrics, Policies, Jobs - No availability, metrics, policies, or jobs selected." and cannot create this type of rule.
What is the point of having the option to create a notification rule of type system ?
Ahh I worked it out each notification rule must be of a specific type but can be applied to all targets of that type within a specified system.
Is there a white paper that talks about best proctices for monitoring a huge system so that alerts and notifications are consistent and we dont need a small army of administrators trying to keep everything in step ?.

    Hi Krrrishna,
    >> And when user clicks back button here, i want to navigate the user to Home page
Per my understanding, you are using the incorrect way to handle the hardware back button click. Try to add the following code snippet to your home page.
In windows phone 8.1 runtime app,
    HardwareButtons.BackPressed += HardwareButtons_BackPressed;
    void HardwareButtons_BackPressed(object sender, BackPressedEventArgs e)
    e.Handled = true;
    Frame.Navigate(typeof(yourhomepage));
In windows phone 8 app, handle OnBackKeyPress event in Message.xaml like the following.
    protected override void OnBackKeyPress(System.ComponentModel.CancelEventArgs e)
    e.Cancel = true;
    NavigationService.Navigate(new Uri("yourhomepage", UriKind.Relative));
Please try it and let me know the result. If this not help, please post more information about your scenario.

  • Alerting Metric thresholds for Notification rules

    Hi Guys,
Can i edit the Response Time (msec) metric under the Listener Availability Notification rule to alert only if the response time is breaching the alerting threshold for 5 minutes,as in for 5 consecutive occurences when this metric is pooled ?
For example we can execute dbms_server_alert.set_threshold(.....
    consecutive_occurrences=>5
    for a metric like redo_generated_sec
Can we do this for Response Time (msec) metric under the Listener Availability Notification rule ?
I am also not seeing this metric listed under v$METRICNAME
    Any ideas...
    Regards,
    Swanand

I am not sure if this is related, but you can added Metrics for the Service Test associated with the Beacon via the Monitoring Setting.
    Example for homepage:
Select All Targets > EM Website > Metric and Policy Settings >Tests >Monitoring Settings of homepage
Then Add/edit Metric Thresholds and Collection settings accordingly.

  • Availability tab of notification rule

    Hello
When I create a notification rule, there are some options under the Availability tab like the following:
Do these stuff have any relation with my selected metric ? When should I choose them ?
I mean lets say I am monitoring broken jobs, what would be the advantage of choosing one of the below options?
Select the availability states for which you would like to receive notifications. You will receive notifications when there is a transition from another state to the selected state.
    up
    down
    Corrective Actions on Target Down
    problem Succeeded
    Agent Unreachable
    Agent Unreachable Resolved
    Metric Error Detected
    Metric Error Resolved
    Blackout Started
    Blackout EndedThanks

These are not related to the metrics you selected.
They mean do you want to be notified whenever:
    - Agent Unreachable
    - Agent Unreachable Resolved
    - Metric Error Detected
    - Metric Error Resolved
    - Blackout Started
    - Blackout Ended
So the metrics you have selected can be on top of these availability events

  • Notification Rules - setup

    10gR1 - 10.1.0.3
General setup is done ie sender & notification schedule is defined
Test smtp which is ok as well
    Now:
Take as example Editing Database Availability and Critical States to set up metrics and email alert
Click Edit -> Have complete wizard - ticked the box for email notification - finish wizard
Click View (to confirm the setup)
    Page is showing:
    E-mail Notification
    No e-mail will be sent.
Is the view page correct ? I only need email, no custom notification methods are defined
Notification Rules seem not particular intuitive - I'm unsure if the setup is ok or not
    please comment:
    Thanks
    Pete

    hi,
your steps seemed right to me.
at least i did it taht way, i can select send me email but no emails are coming and also,
i am having another problem like that. i define a rule with sysman make it public and then log with sys and check "send me email" for that rule, but after click apply & view details
    E-mail Notification
The following administrators will be notified by e-mail according to their notification schedule.
    SYSMAN
i cant make it work for both.

  • Are backup notifications in Oracle 11g DB covered in notification rules

I had a query whether a notification for backup job completion in Oracle 11g database is covered in the notification rules section available in enterprise manager. I could not find any other way of sending notification from EM so was wondering if the notification for backup job completion is covered in the notification rules section.
Please revert with the reply to my query.
    Regards

My understanding from your answer is as follows:-
    1) The email addresses have to be entered in Preferences->General. Say I enter [email protected] & [email protected]
    2) In Preferences->Notification Schedule, we can specify either of [email protected] or [email protected] and we cannot specify [email protected] as it is not included in Preferences->General?
I have tried to put the observations as examples, request you to please check and revert with examples if my understanding is not correct.
