Tempo information in Logic 9

Drums were recorded at friends studio to drummers click in headphones. Tempo was not set in logic.
All songs were recorded to 120 bpm but the real tempo of songs varies.
I've found I can export files [aaf] and load them into a new song [with the correct tempo] but when I use flex, thing go horribly awry.
Suggestions?

I am not completely sure-), but I would first of all use the command to delete all stored tempo infos inside of the imported files.

  • Where is the tempo information in a midi file?

I thought that eventually I would just stumble on it and have a 'duh' moment, but it's been a long time and I still can't find it. GarageBand adjusts to a midi file's starting tempo, so sometimes I use that as a reference. In Logic 7 the event window could stretch out to expose hidden information - I don't why that's been locked up since 8. And of course classical midi files change tempo constantly.
So, how do I tap into this essential information?
As always, thanks for the help, Bob :o)

I'm familiar with Logic's tempo in the the event window and on the global tracks. My question is: how do I find the tempo information within an imported midi file? Logic is not recognizing the information, so I want to find it and set the tempos myself - if possible. (It must be possible.)
If you import a MIDIfile, or drag it to the arrange, you are importing the sequence data into your current project. In other words, regardless of the tempo in the midifile, you are importing into Logic at Logic's current tempo, ignoring the tempo stuff in the midifile.
if you want to retain the tempo in the MIDIfile, you must "Load" the midifile, not import it. This creates a new project with all the tempo information contained in the midifile.
Logic has behaved this way the same since the early days.
In Logic 7 the event window's width could stretch. Since then only the length stretches. There are always notes from the author that are cut off now.
I don't like the current event list window either...

  • Improving timing and solving tempo issues in Logic

Hello, I was reading something about the beat mapping in user manual and also I was trying to improve timing of my drums recording but with no result. Is beat mapping the right tool for doing this and if so, what are the right steps to do it? Please, help.

Beatmapping will enable Logic to adapt to subtle or radical tempo changes like they happen in non quantized music or material which wasn't recorded to a click. I think what you are looking for is a way to improve the timing of your recorded drums. Check out the Strip silence function which will slice up your Audio into smaller regions detecting transients and silence. These newly created regions can then be quantized in various ways in the Region event editor.
Also in the sample editor->Factory->quantize engine you'll find some tools which claim to improve timing of Audio files but I wouldn't really advise you to use them.

  • How can I make freely recorded (without a click) midi tracks follow the tempo of my logic project?

I recorded a band (midi only + 1 room mic for reference) without a click because they wanted to preserve the human feel. Unfortunately, their human feel turned out to be a litlte bit too human. Now I would like to sync up their tempowise shaky midi performance to the original tempo of the song. Is there anybody out there who knows how to do this?

Are you sure you want to do this?
    Really?
OK. Go to the manual and study Tempo Interpreter. This will allow you to tap along in time to the music you hear (ideally the audio from the room mic) and set up a tempo map. Actuall is harder than it sounds.
OR. Go to the manual and study Beat Mapping. You can do this to the audio (your room mic) or to midi (maybe a beter idea). It involves reading the manual (sorry about that, but it's worth it) So. Beat map your project to the performance. A bit labour intensive note by note, but ultimately it works.
Either way, if successful, you now have a logic project where the tempo map is synced to the perfomance.
Now you can adjust the tempo map. Go to the tempo operations menu, and try various alternatives. The simplest would be "create constant tempo", but then the tempo would be fixed. From there though, you could quantise as suggested above. The Q-strength option, where the quantisation strength is adjustable, is a fabulous feature for retaing some sort of human-ness.
Good luck. Better you than me.

  • Is anybody else getting external MIDI clock tempo issues using Logic Pro 9 and OSX Lion 10.7.5?

I am having really serious tempo issues when sending midi clock to any external device - The tempo wavers and alternates around 5 bpm above and below the tempo set, and to be frank is totally unuasable when trying to clock arps from hardware synths.
I have the problem both with Logic and Ableton LE, as well as through both my MOTU Ultralite and Focusrite Liquid Sapphire 56 interfaces. I am therefore presuming this is a MIDI issue with the actual computer (MacBook pro, bought new last september).
I moved to Mac from PC, so I'm not totally up to scratch with the Mac architecture yet - can anybody shed any light on why this is happening? It's driving me mad!

    Pancenter,
Yes.. I do see the occasional minor variations much like yourself when I sync up to my Oasys or more usually the Motif... to a fair sized and complicated project,,. Maybe +/- 1.. or on rare occasions +/- 2 bpm... but nothing close to the OP's +/- 5 bpm experiences...
It actually got better for me when I installed 10.8.x... along with the newest Motu drivers.. and in fact I can't remember the last time I had any unworkable issues with syncing though admittedly I haven't done that much syncing recently.
I do have a project coming up in the next 10 days..  that will require me to use the Oasys synced to Logic so I'll make a note of any issues i have and post back if any occur.
As an aside, I have recently been doing a lot of work with iPad Instruments and Arp Apps and Logic... and the sync as been rock solid over USB...

  • Importing midi tempo map in Logic Pro

my friend did a midi tempo map of a audio file. sent me .midi file but can't get it to open if logic. how you import it into a exitsting project?
    thanks

    Hi
There are 2 ways to get a MIDI file into Logic:
    A) File:Import (or drag and drop from the Finder, use the Browser, etc).
This imports all the basic MIDI events, but ignores tempo, time signature and such,
    B) File:Open
This creates a new project with all the tempo data.
To import this tempo data into an existing project, copy the tempo events from the tempo list in the 'MIDI' project, and paste into your project.

  • Copy between projects including tempo, etc.

I am a new Logic Express user and I need to know how to copy midi data from one project to another including tempo information. I am combining 2 projects that have different tempi and also tempo changes within each midi file.
I'm under the gun to get a project ready for a rehearsal Monday night - help!
    Bernie

    Hi,
sorry it didn't was fast enough for "monday", but to help you with your midi files:
Single MIDI regions don't have tempo information in Logic. I Logic, the tempo changes are performed by entering tempo change events in the global tempo track. Every midi region will automatically adapt to it. So, entering a 120 bpm region into a 80bpm project makes the midi region play slower.

  • How can I make MainStage2 use tempo tracks for older logic tracks?

I am trying to play a recording live that is 5 years in the making. Obviously, Logic has progressed in this time. Anyway, there are tempo tracks for the songs and I can't get MainStage2 to recognize them so I have been forced to add a click track and make them part of the bounce. I might be better off with the click track method since I can push it to one stereo channel and not the other, but I was wondering if there is a way to try and get the tempo information recognized by MainStage2 (perhaps by transforming the old projects into new projects??). I would like to try for one track and compare the pros/cons of the two methods. Thanks in advance.

Wouldn't iTunes be more appropriate for this?  There doesn't seem to be any video involved.

  • Reason resets Logic tempo?  Help!

I'm having a serious problem using Reason 4 re-wired to Logic 8 (Logic is the host). As you know, in order to launch Reason in ReWire mode, you first must start the Logic application, then launch Reason. What is happening is when I have a project open in Logic, then launch Reason, Reason automatically opens a default, empty project, whose tempo happens to be set to 120 BPM. When this project opens, it is resetting the tempo of my Logic project to 120 BPM. Then when I open the correct Reason file (saved previously at 123 BPM, say), it too resets to 120 BPM (due to Logic now hosting that tempo in its project).
This is obviously a disaster, especially if you don't catch it right away. (With audio tracks involved it knocks all the MIDI and audio out of sync, for starters).
Part of the problem is there is an obvious inconsistency: when Reason opens its default 120 BPM project, it is setting Logic's tempo according to the saved Reason file. But when I open the proper Reason project, it doesn't set Logic's tempo a second time (thus correcting the previous error).
Is anyone else experiencing this? Is there a setting in either Logic or Reason to prevent it from happening?

never forget to sign the bpm tempo before open Reason...
Reason with CB4 and PT works fine...
but I know why this happen only with reason + Logic
it is another evidence that confirm my point
Logic Pro is the Killer of all other DAWs
    it is the most advanced....
we can only sympathize with these obvious attempts to sabotage .... (which can create alarms to disseminate alleged Logic-bugs report)
    but... please.. trust me
This is NOT a Logic bug!
we are waiting for a rewire engine update for long, long time!!! (Mac OS 9 and Reason 1.0 was fine with Logic 4 un the year 1999)
( we need a downgrade of rewire engine)
That is why I use Iacbus for sync Logic with Reason
I always avoid to use rewire...
I prefer export reason as Audio and use Audio in Logic

  • "Multiple Tempo Events Detected" -- Propblem with Logic and Reason

I have just migrated from a MacBookProp to a MacPro. All seems well except for the rewiring of Reason. When I rewire, I get the error message in Logic "Multiple Tempo Events Selected" asking if I want to review the list. Since no song is open in Reason, this would appear to be some kind of glitch. Also, there is a huige amount of latency between Reason and Logic. When I have just Reason open, there is no latency at all when I play. the same in Logic when I create a software instrument. But in rewire mode, it is about half a second! Any advice and help would be appreciated.

Update on this: the tempo issue was relegated to one project where there was a tempo change within Logic, so I apologize. But I still have a tremendous amount of latency between the two programs.

  • RAX and Logic 8 tempo sync

I installed RAX (virtual stack)so i can run Atmosphere. Been trying everything to get the tempo to sync between the two but no luck. Anybody done it?? Any help appreciated. Thanks

Thanks buddy - firstly, i dont think ypu can rewire RAX. Its basically a standalone plug-in host. The omly reason i use it is to run ATmosphere which is not intel mac compatible ( well its supposed to be but its NOT). The way i run it is to create an IAC Bus ( virtual midi connection) between Logic and RAX and i can trigger the RAX from Logic. For some reason i cant get to automate tempo changes thru Logic into RAX even tho i make all the settings in RAX for ext. tempo sync. Since right now i'm using only Atmosphere, tempo changes really dont matter since most of the sounds are "ambient patches". But if i am using arpegiatted sounds and there are tempo changes in the song, i cannot trigger the tempo changes in RAX. Am sure there is something in the LOGIC environment that i'm supposed to do but i cant figure it out.

  • Sticky proposal: Logic Pro (first draft)

Ok, here's a first draft of the proposed sticky for this forum. After looking at what we had, I decided to basically do it in four parts - introductory stuff (please post version numbers etc), problem solvers, tips, and audio general stuff.
I'm not making this a work of art, but value feedback in order to make this useful before we ask the mods for a sticky. It's not complete, such a task is a much bigger job, but it's a start. What's not there? What's confusing? Is it too much stuff? Too newbie unfriendly?
When we are happy I will probably style/format it a little better as well.

Please keep your posts on the topic of Logic Pro, or you risk your post being removed for being off-topic. There are plenty of other general audio and recording forums better suited for asking general audio questions.
Questions about third-party software and hardware are welcome as long as they relate directly to using these products in conjunction with Logic.
This forum is dedicated to the post-Apple versions of Logic, which means questions for Logic Pro 7, Logic Pro 8, and Logic Pro 9 are welcome. However, please include the version of Logic you are using, in order to give useful advice (as things change between versions.) Better still, put your Logic versions and system information in your signature, to save having to ask for it.
If you are a user of Logic Express, you should post in the Logic Express forum, rather than the Logic Pro forum, in order to get advice suited to your particular software version (as some things are different between Logic Express and Logic Pro).
Remember that many questions, especially if you are new to Logic, have been asked multiple times before, so it's good practice to use the Discussions Search feature in the top right of the page to search for previous discussions relating to your issue. You will find a wealth of information. Often you can find a solution to your question without needing to post and have someone type out a response they've already typed out hundreds of times before - or worse yet, have your question ignored.

Okay, here I marked some of the links because at the time it was not clear if they adress things that are still actual in L9.
It may be a good idea to name the topics that apply to all Logics' (7, 8 and 9) simply Logic Pro (or leave 'm nameless), and the others after the specific version they apply to. The topics with a (9?) behind it, have still to be confirmed to also apply to L9 (.0.2)
I used underlining to mark text that can be deleted.

  • How can change or control tempo in Logic8 with incoming MTC signal

    Hi Logic users!
I need help about MTC synchronisation. How can I change tempo /follow tempo/ with incoming MTC signal in Logic 8.
Many musician and producer use Cubase and we need frequently use their tempo map. We use Soundscape HDR /there is our main equipment for audio recording – working very stable and reliably/ as MTC master because of I simply open in HDR any midi file exported from Cubase as „tempo map“ and Soundscape can read time information included in midifile and read and change tempo /so midifile i sused as tempo map./. In Cubase is very easy read incoming tempo information. You can switch in transport bar either „fixed“ tempo or „track“ for change tempo with tempo map or incoming MTC signal with tempo information but in Logic 8 I did not find any solution.
Our setup is: 2 SSL Soundscape HDR, Logic8, Yamaha DM2000 mixing console – Soundscape is MTC master. From SS I send MTC to all other gear/ to Mac with Logic8 and to Yamaha DM 2000 for mix automation etc./. Logic is sync very well to incoming MTC signal from SS so it is OK but don´t read incoming tempo information.
    Please help

MTC (MIDI Time Code) is time based, not tempo based.
The tempo map will need to be recreated in Logic.
MIDI Clockb is tempo based but as of version 8, Logic no longer reads MIDI clock. Doubt if that would've worked anyway.

  • Trying to understand how MIDI Clock works in Logic

    Hi,
I'm syncing a Roland MC-909 Groove Box with Logic.  I'm also using a MOTU MIDI Express interface.  The MC-909 syncs to Logic, thus it is in Slave mode. Under Preferences->Sync->MIDI Sync Project Settings, I've discovered something odd, and I'm trying to understand it.  It could be just a lack of understanding regarding the MIDI Spec.
Under MIDI Clock, I necessarily need to set the destination to the MC-909.  I cannot use 'All'  or else the MIDI Express starts playing back at 8x the tempo set in Logic.  Not sure why this happens but its probably something weird with the MOTO interface.  Anyway in Logic, MIDI Time Code (MTC) is disabled, Song Position Pointer (SPP) is disabled, and MMC is disabled.
So basically I'm only sending MIDI Clock to the MC-909.  Here's what is wierd:  As I locate to different places in the Arrange window (not in play mode), the MC-909 is locating to the correct time offset within the pattern!  This basically guarantees that you can start the Logic song anywhere, and the MC-909 will start playing back the pattern at the right time.  I don't understand how this can be happening given that I've disabled SPP in Logic.  The only sync communication between Logic and the MC-909 is MIDI Clock, but I don't believe that MIDI Clock is even capable of transmitting offset information that specifies the time-offset into a drum machine pattern, Does it?  Or is Logic sending SPP info as I click on different locations in the Arrange window?
Another point, is that if I select to transmit MIDI Clock to another device other than the MC-909, but still using the MOTU MIDI Express, then the MC-909 plays back synchronously (i.e. its getting MIDI Clock from Logic, even though Logic isn't sending MIDI Clock to the MIDI port connected to the MC-909), but it does not track the pattern offset described in the previous paragraph.  The only way I can get the pattern offset to work, is if I select the MIDI Clock to be sent to the MIDI port connected to the MC-909.
I would like to figure this out because I'm thiinking about buying an external MIDI synchronizer, but I don't want to lose the ability to have logic specify the offset into the pattern on the MC-909
    Thanks,
