Temporarily can't hear caller during a call, but they CAN hear me.

During a call I temporarily can't hear the caller but they CAN hear me. The sound on my end is completely dead. After 20-30 seconds the sound usually comes back. My AT&T bars are all filled up so it's not because I'm in a bad cell or coverage area. It doesn't seem to matter if I'm calling someone on their home or land line or on their cell, or if I'm calling from inside my home or when I'm out.
I called tech support a couple times and their last suggestion was that the cover I have might be interferring with the sensors in the phone somehow. The speakers are all uncovered though. I have the iSkin for the iPhone, which I really like.
I have updated my iPhone software to 2.1 and I've completely restored my phone back to the original manufacturer's settings but so far it hasn't helped. I was wondering if anyone else has had a similar experience and if you think the case may be the cause of the problem.
I have an appointment to bring my iPhone in to an Apple Store but thought I'd post this before going.
Any thoughts or recommendations would be great.

I had the same problem and it was the thin film skin I had on the screen. There are sensors in the black area of the screen by the speaker which are affected by the plastic cover. I dropped the phone about a foot and shattered the screen the first week and decided the loss of the sensor was better than paying apple another $300 for a rebuilt phone.

    After reviewing your post, it sounds like you can connect the device with Bluetooth and make and receive calls but they dont hear you. I would recommend that you read this article, it may be able to help the issue.

    One other problem could be your microphone. Does it work for anything else other than a call?

    i dont want to use the earphone with a mic though, i want to be able to receive and to make calls without the earphone with a mic. but my problem is, there is no sound at all coming from the speakers that you put near your ear when your calling

    Here's the problem I faced.  I have a iPhone 4 with AT&T.  I have the latest iOS 5.0.1.  When on a voice call the other party was unable to hear my voice.  The other party couldn't hear me even if I used the white ear buds that came with the phone or even on speaker phone.  All other features of the phone worked.  I could even Facetime, record voice memos and use Voice Control.  So I knew it wasn't a hardware problem.  AT&T installed a new SIM card.  Apple had me reset everthing and even do a restore.  I even went to an Apple store and an Apple Genius couldn't figure out why only phone calls didn't work.  He ran a diagnostics on the phone and everything checked out.  His only option was to offer to sell me a replacement phone for $149, since mine was out of warranty.  So today I continued my search for an answer and came to this page (https://discussions.apple.com/message/16912532#16912532)  and noticed the little green checkmark under the "More like This" section for "Re: iOS 5 Bluetooth Bug".  So I thought to myself, if theres a connection on this page, maybe it is my problem.  It was worth a shot at least.  So I turned Bluetooth off on my phone and now the other party can again hear my voice again on phone calls.  All this and I resolved my own problem and didn't have to spend $149.  CRAZY!

    Basic troubleshooting steps outlined in the user guide are restart, reset, restore from backup, restore as new device.  Try each of these steps until your problem is solved. If these steps fail to solve your issue, then you'll need to bring your phone into Apple (or an authorized service provider in your area) for evaluation.

    Oh no, Robinbird18! This is not what we like to hear about your cell phone. It makes it pretty hard to have a conversation with someone when you can't hear them. If you make a phone call out are you able to have a conversation with someone without any issues? How long has this been going on? Have you tried to use the phone on speaker phone to see if that works at all?     i had the same problem a few weeks ago and i had only had my 3g iphone for a few weeks. It was as if i was on permanent mute. I could hear others fine, but they couldn't hear me, even if i used speakerphone or even a bluetooth.
    i took it to an apple store and they did a real quick test (they first did a system restore, then they took my phone and tried calling another employee). Once they validated it wasn't working, they replaced my phone quickly with no questions asked. Just make sure to back up everything on I-Tunes before you go in so that you dont lose any info. might want to do the restore before you go in, as well, otherwise you'll have to wait for them to do it at the store, which takes them 15 mins or so.

    I can make a call, and it connects but I can't hear the person I'm calling. They can hear me.  I figured out that I can hear only if I set the call on Speaker. 

    I have been told that the microphone is broken so will have to go to Apple to get it fixed! Explains the problem!

    you need to isolate wetyher or not its a hardware issue.
    make a voice memo. (if there is sound then, your bottom mic is fine.)
    Make a video (if there is sound then your speaker mic is fine.)
    if those dont work restore to factory settings and setu p as new, if the issue persists, setup replacement
    if you have sound, try resetting your network settings. (settings general>reset>reset network setting THIS WILL DELETE ANY SAVED WIFI PASSWORDS.)

    I understand that you are having microphone issues on your iPhone when you place a call to someone and they cannot hear you unless you activate the speaker function. In this situation I would recommend the steps in the following article to help isolate and resolve the situation.

    Follow these steps, testing after each.
    Make sure nothing is plugged in to the jack connector.
    Make sure nothing is blocking any of the microphones (refer to the pictures below to find your device's microphones). Check for these:
    Dirt or debris
    A screen protector or case
    When you're holding your phone next to your ear, make sure you don't block the microphone with your fingers or shoulder and make sure to speak into the microphone
    Turn the iPhone off and then on.
    Update to the latest version of iOS.
    If necessary, find general iPhone hardware troubleshooting suggestions.

    I have had my iphone for about 71 days now. I did a power on and off reset yesterday and since then when I make/get a phone call I can hear them but they can't hear me. I was on the phone yesterday for over 5 hours with att and apple and no one would do a thing. Finally at about 11:30 pm last night an apple rep told me she was going to talk with her manager to see what to do and call me back and never did. I was on hold for over an hour today and still got no where. I was previously with Verizon for about 10 years and only switched due to the iphone and now I am about to call it quits and go back if no one can help me with this matter. I rely on my phone and waiting over a week for a new one is unacceptable. I have tried every thing that I can find.
