Temporarily Disable Start-Up Items

Hi,
I just updated to Snow Leopard and in the process I have come to discover that my Symantic Anti-Virus is incompatible with the upgrade. I need to keep the software on my computer since it is required by my college to have it, however I would like to know if there is a way to temporarily prevent it from starting up when I turn my computer on so I don't get 10 error messages every time I start up my computer. So how can I do this and then make it when the Symantic update comes out for 10.6 comes out that I can reenable everything?
Thanks,
Alex

You don't need to take it out just do what my previous post says. As far as I know, Norton (Symantics)
does nothing but waste space and slow things down. Keep your Apple Firewall turned on and keep software updates current and you will be OK.

  • Start Menu items/shotcuts and Start Menu search ability on multiple workstations

2/13/2014 our IT department began to receive complaints of missing programs. After investigation of a few users we were able to determine that the programs existed but all shortcuts and items from the start menu had been completely removed. In addition the
searching feature of the start menu was not functional. This happened to about 90% of our environment and the catalyst seemed to be Windows updates or at least occurred after the auto reboot initiated by Windows Updates.  The only items visible in start
menu were items added after the fact, internet explorer, magnifier, command prompt, and notepad. All other items, folders, and the ability to search installed programs or folders were completely removed. However all programs are present in the program files
folders. THe start menu folder in program data was empty except for the aforementioned items. Additionally properties of start menu had all necessary checks in boxes such as search program files and folders etc. Also show hidden items and folders is enabled
for many users so the items were not hidden but gone. And the biggest kicker of all was after a full domain investigation into the issues we found that the majority of our windows server platforms, primarily 2008, were also affected and system restore is unavailable.
This conflicts with our idea that Windows Updates caused this since our servers get their updates on a manual initiated basis by their admins which we have not performed as of yet for this month. This caused me to begin looking at SCCM SCEP as all systems
have System Center Endpoint Protection and received definition updates. Also accessing different user profiles or even a new profile did not make a difference, issue still present.
Due to the enormous inconvenience we sent out a company wide email asking users to perform system restores to get us in a stable state. A system restore to the day before Windows updates (second Wednesday of every month configured by SCCM SCUP) restored
    the start menu items.
On a multitude of machines IT performed troubleshooting and system restores recording the changes removed and added. We then, on a healthy machine, started to apply the windows updates and SCEP (antivirus) definitions 1 by 1 with out success of replicating
the issue. Next we performed a system wide antivirus full scan and did not find any viruses. This is obviously not a system criticle issue bringing us down but is a huge concern for us in IT as it happened company wide and caused a large flux of tickets and
some down time for non-technical users. We most definitely want to know the cause and after several days of investigation and troubleshooting Im turning to the Microsoft community for help.
I know I categorized this as a Windows 7 issue and its affecting windows server 2008, 2003, and 7, but I did not see a forum for all windows platforms. Since the majority of affected users are Windows 7 I opened it here.
So to summarize in a bulleted format:
Issue: Wide spread issue affecting around 60-70 users and servers, all profiles, were all start menu items save one or two system defaults were removed. Additionally the searching feature for the start menu looks to be broken as programs
exist in program files and are unsearchable from start menu. IT was also affected and I remain affected until I find the cause.
    Investigation and Troubleshooting:
Start menu properties: nothing has changed and search options are enabled.
Missing items are not hidden, hiding and unhiding does nothing and folder options show hidden files is checked.
Program data start menu location is indeed empty as well as user app data start menu location
No group policy's are in place altering start menu items and no group policy changes were made as of recent
No SCCM packages pushed company wide in last month or pushed individually
Windows Updates occurred on windows 7 machines only before the issue occurred and computers restarted and the issue surfaced
System Center Endpoint Protection Antivirus updates and definitions deployed just before the occurrence with windows updates. SCEP def updates happen on all windows boxes to include servers
Paint.exe was completely missing from system32 folder for some users machines to include my own
System restore to that morning before restarts or previous day fixes the issue for windows 7 users
No windows updates were initiated on any servers
Servers were also affected with windows 7 machines
About half the users affected had corrupt Microsoft Office 2013 Pro Plus Click to Run installations and for some the system restore did not fix this and we had to re-install office for around 10 users
SCEP antivirus did not catch any viruses that could cause this, I performed MBAM scans on a handful of machines and didn't find anything either.
    Re-creating start menu shortcuts works
Happened to two of our companies locations NH and MA, all part of the same domain but different LANS of course. Companies are interconnected by MPLS connection.
I combed through SCCM to see if anything deployed and found nothing. Currently I have SCUP updates and SCEP updates disabled. I will post a list of Windows Updates that occurred when the issue occurred as well as the SCEP updates. I have read all the threads
about this types of issues and tried all steps without success. Googling the issue also did not rear results.

    Hi,
I would like to suggest you try these steps to figure out what could be causing this problem.
    1. Run Troubleshooter
Open the Search and Indexing troubleshooter
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Open-the-Search-and-Indexing-troubleshooter
    2. Create a new library and include fewer folders for test purpose. Now search for a file from that folder. See if it works.
    Create a new library
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Create-a-new-library
    3. Try to rebuild search indexing. Refer the steps from the following article.
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Change-advanced-indexing-options
Also you may use the System File Checker tool (SFC.exe) to check the issue. The sfc /scannow command scans all protected system files and replaces incorrect versions with correct Microsoft versions.
How to use the System File Checker tool to troubleshoot missing or corrupted system files on Windows Vista or on Windows 7

Is there a way to temporarily disable the iPod within my iPhone. I am trying to stream music using an app and a dock on my Sony AIR and the stream is over ridden by the iPod starting up.

First of all, an idle threat is one that a person has no intention of carrying out. In the past 16 months that I have had this phone I have become less and less satisfied and found that it is like much of today's technology....over rated and under performing. The one thing that I have never been accused of is not wanting, or not giving help but when a company makes itself unavailable to resolve issues and leaves it to forums run by users helping users, it speaks more about the company than anything else they could do. As I said, I do not make idle threats and I did not threaten you in any way. Guess I'll call this topic done with as it is not and was not the intent to get a war started

  • WCS11G - Start Menu Items for Admin interface?

I'm looking into WCS 11G since I need to migrate a 7.5.5 site.
As it looks now, code or structure won't be modified to better support features such as supporting the contributor interface better so a lot of our users will expect to use the admin interface.
I am however having an issue enabling simple start menu items for content. I.e. a simple Start Menu Item for a Page, simply will not show up. It shows up just fine in the contributor interface however.
I've been going through all the documentation, but I cannot see any references to there being any limits on what kind of assets can be presented in the admin interface.
Is this a bug I'm experiencing? Or simply an approach taken to force users over to the contributor interface?
    Thanks
    /Lars

By default the Admin UI will not show certain asset types, this is intentional and controlled by the property advancedUI.enableAssetForms in futuretense_xcel.ini. If you set this to true and restart then the Page assets and others will show up. Here's an extract from the Property Files Reference Guide:
    advancedUI.enableAssetForms
Used to enable and disable the WebCenter Sites
Admin interface for content contributors. Access
to the following assets is affected:
    • All flex assets and their parent assets
    • All basic assets
    • Engage assets, such as recommendations,
    segments and promotions
    • Query, Collection, and Page assets
By default, this property is set to false, which
disables the WebCenter Sites Admin interface for
content contributors. The assets listed above
cannot be created, edited, searched for, or deleted,
except from the WebCenter Sites Contributor
interface, where they are supported by default.
Note: In the Contributor interface, asset types and
assets intended for developers are either available
only for inspection or they are inaccessible. They
must be accessed from the WebCenter Sites
Admin interface. For a comparison of features in
the Contributor and Admin interfaces, see the
    WebCenter Sites User’s Guide.

  • Lens corrections temporarily disabling other adjustments

I have recently noticed something strange with Lightroom. Normally, I work my way down the Develop module making basic adjustments, using the various tools, and so on; the last thing I do is Upright or Manual lens corrections. However, I apply Lens profiles at the very beginning (because it makes a difference). Recently I noticed that when I apply Upright or Manual Lens corrections, Lightroom seems to temporarily disable any other corrections, apply the lens correction (which always seems to take forever), and reapplies the other corrections. I found this out after noticing minor black and white clipping areas temporarily reappear on a photo I had corrected with an adjustment brush while applying a Manual Lens correction.
I find this behaviour odd and do not know if it has any impact on any other corrections like adjustment brush correction (in this case I started wondering if Lightroom readjusts the adjustment brush area or not).

  • Snow Leopard and Juniper Network Connect/How to temporarily disable Bonjour

    Hi All,
I have encountered a problem with Juniper Network Connect running on my MacBook Air. I can connect successfully to my company's VPN but on my MacBook Air Junipers Network Connect started to dis- and reconnect in changing time intervals.
After some googling I am pretty sure that it has something to do with the Bonjour service changing the routing tables. I wanted to confirm this and activated "Back to my mac" on my MacBook Pro which up to now did not had any problems connecting to my company's VPN. Now it has the same issues.
My question is whether there is any way to temporarily disable Bonjour, ideally via Apple script. Up to now the only solutions I found were to either
    - disable mDNSResponder which would also prevent accessing any websites or
    - disable multicast advertisements (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3789?viewlocale=en_US)
The latter approach includes editing a properties file and restarting the mac, thus would be less than ideal for just quickly dis- and enabling bonjour. Furthermore I am not quite sure whether this really solves the problem of updating the routing table.
    Any advise is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    equinox

If you are using an Airport or Airport Express base station: go to Utilities>Airport Utility. When it's found the Airport, click on 'Manual Setup'. In the next pane, click on the 'Wireless' tab; when that pane opens click on 'Wireless Network Options...'. Check 'Create a closed network'.
If you are using another manufacturer's wireless router you will need to look at their instructions, but the principle is the same - it may say something like 'Hide SSD'.

  • Is it possible to temporarily disable JTable ?

I have a JTable that is used to set parameters of a midi sequence that is to be played. When I then start the sequence, the timing is very bad, and I have reason to believe that the constant updating of the JTable is partly to blame. As my data is in the table model, I guess I could destroy the JTable to play the sequence, but I would prefer to leave the JTable view visible (even if unresponsive), while the sequence plays. Is there any way to temporarily 'disable' a JTable?
    Thanks, Scott

Hi Darryl- my JTable gets its data from a class which extends AbstractTableModel, and I put the System.out... code in the getValueAt() method of that class. It it seems like the calls to refresh the JTable are internal and not due to my programming (but I will definitely not rule out the possibility that my code is faulty... I might have a fireDataChanged() where it shouldn't be...).
It has been suggested to me before to include a SSCCE, but I think I'd have to include most of my program because most of the classes use each other... listeners, etc. I've probably written spaghetti code.
Do you happen to know about how often a JTable normally updates itself? Aside from this most recent experiment of mine, I have the impression (from internet searches, etc.) that the JTable's normal behavior is to continuously update itself.
I don't mean to confuse what it is I am needing help with, but this has been a specific question relating to a larger problem I'm having - which you may recognize as you have been replying to my other posts as well. I have thought that 'putting the JTable to sleep' might be a patch to get my program to work properly, but I've suspected that there really was an underlying problem, that is, that my sequencer thread priority was not high enough. With the NetBeans debugger I found the following:
    Swing-Shell - 6
    TimerQue -5
    Java 2D Disposer -10
    Attach Listener -5
    Signal Dispatcher -9
    Finalizer - 8
    Reference Handler - 10
Java Sound Sequencer -8 // this is the thread that I'm most interested in - it plays the sequence
So I am wondering that if I change these priorities to be more favorable for the sequencer thread, that it might not even matter what the JTable does (although if I have some sort of unintended loop in my code, I need to fix that). I would prefer to have the JTable 'active', for it displays the current beat of the sequencer, and similar real-time info.
I apologize for including this 'stream of consciousness, post, I hope it is not to hard to follow. But at this point I think I'll try to get my priorities straght (ugh!!!) and hopefully I can leave the JTable as it is.
    Thanks, Scott

  • Why does DW disable insert menu items?

This must be a configuration option someplace, but in general, why would DW disable Insert menu items?
I am in .cfm file, in clearly an unlocked area of a page where I should be allowed to insert hyper links, email links, horizontal rules, images, tables.  But on the Insert menu, each of those items is disabled (and others, but you get the point).  Since the insert menu items are disabled, the keystroke shortcuts for those actions don't function.
I can manually type in these tags, and I can insert them from the Insert window.
I start a brand new .cfm page, and the insert menu is fine.
It appears DW is examining the code and deciding [INCORRECTLY] what is appropriate to insert via the menu.
    Thanks for any insight provided.

  • How to temporarily disable the mouse on a Mac?

Over the last year I've gotten really big into using keyboard shortcuts and I'm amazed at how much more quickly I can fly around the computer now. I also learned how to use Quicksilver on a Mac and love that for quickly switching between apps without having to go for the mouse.
What I'm wondering is whether anything exists that temporarily disables the mouse to basically force you to learn keyboard shortcuts and other ways to navigate "mouse-lessly". Ideally something where the mouse would be disabled and you'd have do something to actually re-enable it anytime you want to use the mouse. After having something like that going for a few days my guess is that you'd have learned most of the remaining shortcuts?
Please let me know if any of you have ever come across something like this. Thanks!!

    Thanks for that.
    Interesting.
On my MBP (the new one) I have two separate panes, one for keyboard and mouse, one for trackpad.
My K & M pane has all the mouse stuff, but none of the trackpad stuff, of course.
The trackpad thing has this really nice video that goes with the gestures configurations.
But no "ignore trackpad input" thingy. And no "accidental input" thingy either.
I have suspected that on the new MBPs with the new gesture trackpad, that some items have been eliminated. For example when using gestures, one cannot "Ignore accidental trackpad input" when it may be that several fingers on the pad are not accidental at all.
    My MBP is late 2007.
As a side issue, the newest MBPs do not have firewire, and I don't want one w/o FW.

  • Temporarily disable a Skype number

I work for a particular company freelance and I use a Skype number when I work there. I plan to take three weeks off and I don't want calls from the numerous clients that I work with while I'm away.
I tried "canceling" my number; now it forwards calls to my personal number. Is there a solution for temporarily disabling a number? Even better if I can leave an outgoing message telling them I won't be returning their calls.
    Thanks!

Hi, jandazza, and welcome to the Community!
As you posted your enquiry on the Skype Manager message board, is the on-line number affiliated with a Skype Manager account?
I am concerned that when you cancelled the number, you cancelled the on-line number subscription.  Please test to see if you still have the number!  Skype Customer Service may be able to re-claim the number for you if indeed the subscription was inadvertently cancelled; I am not sure this would be possible ... here is a link to start with: contact customer service
There is no solution to temporarily disabling a number; as I tried to explain, above, an on-line number is actually a subscription.  You could forward the calls to a Skype account with voice mail activated to answer calls immediately (no delay) in order to record the "I am away from the office" message.

  • Temporarily Disable CSA?

Is there a way to programmatically temporarily disable CSA, and then re-enable it programmatically? I'm looking for a way to disable CSA from starting (loading DLLs, starting the client...basically stopping all functionality) temporarily while a software installation runs, requiring multiple reboots. Then at the end of the installation, re-enabling all the functionality of CSA? Any help would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Steve

    Hi Steve,
Interesting request but not the first time I have heard it. It begs the question, "If you could do it via a program what would stop a hacker from doing the same?"
From my experience you will have to un-install CSA before you can run a software installation program which requires multiple reboots. Then you would have to re-install CSA.
Hope this helps. If we are lucky the resident West Coast expert on CSA, Tom S. will chime in.

  • Temporarily disable CS6?

I want to temporarily disable CS6 - I'm trying to isolate a speed performance issue and want to eliminate variables. I want to keep everything else intact like fonts etc so I can start narrowing this down. I have CS5 still up and running. Question: Can I safely zip the applications to disable temporarily, or perhaps move them to somewhere else, or must I uninstall then reinstall?  (Mac, 10.7.4, CS6 13.0 x64) Thanks!

Well, the licensing service and other auxiliary tools/ programs wil lstill launch, so unless you properly uninstal land in the process disable/ remove those services, you haven't achieved anything to diagnose your issues. So yes, uninstall.
