Temporary fix of MBP keyboard sleepiness

For you guys who has problem with first letter missing while using build in keyboard, and elected to wait till Apple comes out with some permanent solution. I first suggested it on another thread, but it is now buried in 32 pages of complains. Underlying idea is to reduce power consumption of internal USB bus. May be idea is wrong but it's simple and improved keyboard performance for me.
1. Uncheck "Illuminate keyboard in low light conditions" (not just F key adjustment)
2. Reset power management http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303319
3. Reboot
In addition I turned off Bluetooth and currently looking for a way how to turn off IR receiver. This solution is NOT permanent or 100% foolproof. It suspect it wouldn't work for everyone. Let us know if it works or not.
Alexander

Thank you rfeynol.
Here is my final solution to this nonsense in my case. I open up MBP's top case http://www.powerbookmedic.com/Manuals/15-inch-macbook-pro-manual.pdf and placed black electric tape on light sensors completely blocking them to light exposure. The only missing function is autopilot. F8 key works just fine and I can turn lights on whenever I want, even on bright sun. Keyboard works fine most of the time. I would say, if mistyping happened on this level to begin with, I wouldn't notice. I'll RIP now waiting for Apple's permanent solution.
I have an open ticket for repair at local Genius Bar. I was there twice and couldn't show them a single missing keystroke. The only differences I could figure out are car ride (motion sensor?), stable lighting environment (light sensors?) and different Airport network with plenty BT and IR devices around ( microwave or remote controls causing this?). I am clueless, geniuses at the Bar are clueless. I elected to skip repair for now. Am I right?
Good luck to you all.
Alexander.

  • No battery available, Temporary fix

Hi everyone, I'm an owner of Macbook Pro Early 2011.
    MTLion 10.8.2
I have been having a problem with "No battery available" or"X" signed on the battery recently.
If you want to know how i temporary fix it just skip to the ->(TEMPORARY FIX) section.
The situation is, if i use the Macbook without connecting to the magsafe sometimes the Macbook will suddenly turn itself off and will nerver turn on again without the magsafe adapter. When the Macbook is on with magsafe, the battery will show X signed and says no battery available and the Macbook will become really slow. Also when I press the battery indicator at the left side of the Macbook it will just beep for few times as if there were actually no battery inside.
I have gone through a lot of topics about this issue and have been trying almost every possible solutions, the best one so far is resetting the SMC.
The issue here is My Macbook Pro Early 2011 is considered as  A battery that I should not remove on my own,,fine I followed the instructions
Note: Portable computers that have a battery you should not remove on your own include MacBook Pro (Early 2009) and later, all models of MacBook Air, and MacBook (Late 2009).
    Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
Note: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC.
But then It's still the same "X" no battery available.
    ->(TEMPORARY FIX)
I was in a rush so finally I decided to follow the instructions for the removeable Macbook battery models.
Resetting the SMC on Mac portables with a battery you can remove
Note: Learn about removing the battery on MacBook and MacBook Pro.
    Shut down the computer.
Disconnect the MagSafe power adapter from the computer, if it's connected.
    Remove the battery.
Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    Release the power button.
Reconnect the battery and MagSafe power adapter.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
But for me, I have to take the bottom aluminum case out manually. I unplugged the battery cable and did the 5 seconds and replugged it in.
After that the Macbook became normal. I was so happy when i fixed it for the first time.
Now the thing is after the first fixed around one week it happened to me again the "X" problem. So I fixed it again by opening the case, replugged the battery, done.
After that this symptom keeps on coming more frequently, eventually one "fix" can last for only 2days and it will happen to me again.
What should i do now? Any advice?
The apple store is quite far from where i live so I'm posting here first may be someone will come up with a better suggestion.
Btw, the battery had already been replaced 2 months ago.
I have to replace it because the first battery blown up when I plugged the magsafe to the Macbook.
Right now I'm worrying, Is it something about Battery Sensor?
I bought my Macbook Pro from Saudi Arabia but currently I'm using it in China.

    Hi Marcus111,
    QUESTION:
I would like you to ask, by "they replaced the battery connector port" you mean they replaced the MagSafe DC-In board (see the picture, the device in the right hand http://d3nevzfk7ii3be.cloudfront.net/igi/UnXMVB6e4eFgkwFY.huge) or simply said the part between the logic board and the MagSafe connector with the LED indicator, right?
    MY SYMPTOMS:
I have very similar symptoms with the same MBP 13'' unibody early 2011 model. In Addition to what you mentioned, I am only able to use external (bluetooth) keyboard and mouse since the built-in keyboard does not work very well (just in the rEFInd menu, but very slowly). Moreover, I am only able to start the system when the trackpad is disconnected from the LogicBoard. The system runs very slowly by default, but if I do a little trick -- the SMC reset during which I disconnect the MagSafe, reconnect, with 5 second intervals among the steps, the system starts and runs pretty fast. The problem is that if I do it as described, the battery is not recognized in the OS X. On the top of that, as the trackpad is disconnected and keyboard does not work well I can only use external bluetooth keyboard and mouse (or USB). When the trackpad is connected, the fan starts turning but the MacBook does not start at all...just the white diode is blinking and the hardrive starts and stops spinning over and over again (like if there were not enough power).

  • Cinema display flashing to black on Yosemite - temporary fix

Since upgrading to Yosemite (2010 MacPro with 24" Apple LED Cinema Display) my Cinema display has been randomly going to to black for a second. My secondary display (an older LG LX40) doesn't flicker and is fine. Sometimes it happens a lot and sometimes less so. It's driving me crazy. And I've seen that other people have had the same/ similar issues.
I've tried re-installing Yosemite, PRAM and NVRAM resets etc. Nothing seems to work however I have found a temporary fix for anyone  - like me - who is desperately trying to finish a job. I have been disconnecting the Cinema Display display port cable from the Mac Pro and connecting it to my 13" 2012 MacBook Pro and wait for it to display the laptop desktop. I then take it out of the MBP and put it back into the Mac Pro. This seems to clear something and stops the flickering for most of the day (but it will start up again at some point).

Has nobody come across this? I've still got the same issue. My temporary fix works for about a week and then I have to do it again. Any advice/ ideas would be welcome!

  • Mbp keyboard nonresponsive, screen freezes, ideas?

My MBP keyboard and screen freezes; any ideas on a fix?

Reset the SMC (may take 2-3 attempts) and also do a PRAM reset. Instructions are in Intel iMac SMC and PRAM resets. If that does not fix the problem then please post an EtreCheck report of your computer in your reply.

  • Mid 2010 Macbook Pro Graphic Card(GT 330M) Temporary Fix

Have seen lot of Posts regarding this issue to which i found a temporary fix and thought might be helpfull to someone else
I am with a Mid 2010 Macbook Pro
    2.66 i7
    4gb ram
Nvidia Geforce gt 330m / Intel HD Graphics(228 mb)
    Lion 10.7.2
its been above 4 years my mb was working fine untill i decided to do a clean install of Mountain Lion and started facing this Crash Issues,
within this week i tryed to reinstall snow leopard and lion and tryed to overcome this crash issue but noting worked(couldnt reinstall snow bcaz it wouldnt boot for me)
Havent taken it to a showroom or repair centre since i already figured that this issue is due to the nvidia graphic card that came with this mb(but planing to once i save enuf money for a new repair)
for now i am on 10.7.2(lion) and my fix to this issue is gfxCardStatus 2.2.1(the new version of gfx does automatic switching for me which gives me no control)
Bfore this when ever i opend Logic Pro the gfx status automatically moved to Discrete which after a while lead to black screen and a force restart,so i came across this fix and its been working well for me
    how to ;-
1 - install gfxCardStatus 2.2.1(google it for download link)
2 - switch energy saver in system prefs to battery saver and select Intergrated Mode in gfcardstatus from the menu bar
    Note ;-
    - after restart the defualt in gfx bcomes dynamic switching and while selecting Intergrated mode the screen will have white lines and garbled issue.
3 - so bfore restart i quit gfx and uninstall it(move it to trash n empty)
4 - after restart the gfx menu dosent come up on bar so i reinstall it from a extrnal usb or drive or redownload it from internet and install it back n repeat set 2 from how to notes.
Now repeating this process when i open Logic Pro the gfx stays on Intergrated Only allowing me to finish my projects with full concentration and without any black screen or force restarts.
Hope this works well for some one out there.

    Spill Cleaning
Some liquid has just spilled into your Mac. What should you do?
    Do
Immediately shut down the computer and unplug the power cord.
Remove the computer's battery (if you can)
Disconnect any peripherals (printers, iPods, scanners, cameras, etc.)
Lay the computer upside down on paper towels to get as much liquid as possible to drip out.
Note what was spilled on your Mac.
Bring the computer into an Apple store or AASP as soon as possible.
    Don't
Don't try to turn it back on. Liquids can help electrical current move about the components of your Mac in destructive ways.
Don't shake the computer (this will only spread the liquid around).
Don't use a hair dryer on it (even at a low setting a hair dryer will damage sensitive components).

What type of troubleshooting were we able to do with you? I want to make sure that we can get some sort of resolution for this problem.
It is quite possible the battery door may get your phone in working order again. I'm not sure if the store has it in stock, but it is available in our warehouse for $14.99 which can be ordered via customer service.

In more specific terms. The apps that came on the iPod like the weather and maps and whatnot have been working flawlessly. It's just when I download an app and then disconnect from wifi it's almost like I'm on a timer until the app stops working. It acts like it wants to open, the screen flashes black then resets to the home pages. I've tried all of the basic fixes, rebooting, reseting, uninstalling then reinstalling. But like in my...long...question, the reinstalling option only seems to be a temporary fix. I just recently downloaded the 5.1.1 udate (I think that's what it was) does that have anything to do with it, or am I just derpy when it comes to iPods?

  • Fan problem on L645-S4036 (temporary fix and a question about it)

Ok, after some days of usage on this laptop, I have found that the fan only goes to 95% of usage when I'm playing, which is normal I think... BUT also goes crazy when I turn on the laptop, and I don't use for about 15 minutes, even if the temp is just fine, with no software running on the background.
If I use it, the problem doesn't show up at all...
The only way to turn it off and lower it to about 45% (if the computer is not hot), or 0% (is so nice like that... No noise at all), is suspending the laptop, and turning it up again. Really strange thing.
I guess is a problem with the BIOS, or the temp calculation of it. Do anyone know if Toshiba is working on a BIOS update for this issue?
I'm happy with this laptop, the battery which is faulty, lasts about 2.3 hours, not 3.9 hours as said at the specifications (not a problem, warranty is supposed to bring me a working replacement... Doing it tomorrow) and the fan noise are the only problems I have found after a month of use.
I hope the temporary fix helps a bit...If anyone knows another way to fix it, reply me, because third party software didn't worked for me.
    Thanks a lot!

I have TOSHIBA Sattelite L300. I have same problem. I installed SpeedFan to monitor CPU temp. I found something CRAZY about toshiba conception on temp. regulation!!! The fan stops when temperature of CPU goes under 30 degrees !!!!!!!! UN BELIEVABLE!!! It's very hard to be done... I can achieve this VERY HARD! In the room temp is 20 degr., outside is 10 deg. the laptop is on the table... cpu usage 1-2% !!!! Fan goes on AND NEVER STOPS, temp of cpu stays constantly at 35 deg. I pickup the laptop in air, or put a remote control of TV under front side, and miracle!!!! after a few minutes the temp goes to 29 deg and fan stops (of course if you standby and resume, fan stops too). But not for long... the temp. of cpu starts growing. first the temp grows fast, then it almost stops growing about 45 deg. and you say wow super! But than suddenly fan start (about 45 deg.) if it didn't start... the cpu temp wouldn't rise above 55 deg.
I have another LAPTOP, Sony Vaio, I installed SpeedFan to monitor CPU temp too... This machine has a very different conception about cooling... I can't hear it FAN ever... Tha speedfan shows this: When you use machine actively, the cpu stays about 70 deg. tha fan speed varies very smooth (not on a steps like the toshiba laptop) and when you not using CPU actively, the fan speed drops to a very slow level, almost can't hear it... have to put my ear near to where the air goes out... and from this quiet speed, the cpu temps goes down slowly, and when it's about 60 deg. tha fan stops at all... and what I see in speedfan is that cpu temps raise very slowly to about 65 deg. (this is when the laptop is over me (not on the table with remote control for more air :-) ) the fan never start if I'm not using CPU actively and the temp stays about 65 deg., when I start using cpu a little more activily the fan starts at 74 deg (at lowest speed, not like the toshiba "Buuuu... buu... bbb" - on a few steps to the lowest level starting from high) and can't hear the fan is working, just see how the temp starts falling... and when achieves 60 deg. STOPS (but you can't hear it at all). So the concept is that when you are not using a CPU actively... the CPU can cool WITHOUT FAN RUNNING (at about 50-60 deg. PLEASE TEST IT). So I think TOSHIBA MUST DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT... I can't believe that engineers thinks that every 5 min. temp. jumps from 30 to 45 deg, from 45 to 30 and this is 24/7 (if you put your remote control under laptop and you live in a cool country where outside is 10 deg. and inside is 20). Instead of CPU at constant (or at least slowly changing) temp. This is not good for any machine (cooling, heating, cooling, heating... this is bad for machinery). The problem could be solved just by changing fan on temp to 74 and fan off to 65 deg. for an example...
So I wait for a new BIOS version SOON, with updated values...
    Thank you! in advance...
Other wise... NO CHOICE... change your laptop with a one with a better cooling concept...
If any one needs more info or what ever, please feel free to contact me...

  • Small Liquid Spill on MBP Keyboard... Now not working. Any Help?

I recently spilled a very small amount of liquid on my MBP keyboard (~3 drops), and now the keyboard does not work at all. Any diagnoses or solutions?? I really can't seem to believe that such a small amount of liquid could damage it so much, but maybe I'm missing something! Thanks in advance!

What you are seeing happens when the ambient light level is bright enough so the Mac judges that you don't need keyboard backlighting. If you don't agree and want backlighting anyway, download and install [Lab Tick|http://labtick.proculo.de> to gain full manual control over it.

  • Separate settings for MBP keyboard and aluminium keyboard?

I just bought myself a Apple aluminium keyboard (USB) and have to say I'm loving it. However, there is one small hang-up.
Basically, whatever key-commands I apply to the keyboard are taking from my MacBook Pro's keyboard settings and seem to have none of their own. I had gotten the impression that there was a stand-alone software to manage the keyboard but that does not seem to be the case as far as I can tell after about 30 minutes of searching the net and Apple's website.
Does anyone know a way in which I can have one set of settings for my laptop's keyboard and another set for my aluminium keyboard?

  • MBP Keyboard

Well, I am typing this up on a stupid Dell laptop, and I have a few questions about the MBP keyboard.
Are the keys easy to hit, and not all "blah" like this keyboard.
And exactly what is it like. This keyboards space bar doesn't hardly work.
    Any answers?

I have been a mac user for a long time. The best mac keyboard was definitly the original ADB pro keyboard that they stopped making like 10 years ago.
When I was in the market to buy a laptop a few years ago, I looked into the two options at the time: The ibook and the Powerbook. Believe it or not, I put a lot of weight on the feel and action of the keyboard and ended up spending the extra money ont he Powerbook. During my two year stint in powerbook land, I was continually impressed with the action.
Now I am on my next laptop, a macbook pro and I have say the action is still fantastic. The only problem that I notice with te keyboard is that they keys appear to bend at angles over time. I admit, I'm a hard typist, and so part of the warping could my typing, but I've only had the machine for a short while and at home I mostly use my external Pro keyboard (which is amazing).
Still, I think the keyboard is good, and dispite the slight warping I am still very happy with the keyboard.

  • MBP Keyboard equivalents for PC Keys?

Not sure where to post this question (OSX or here) so here goes for starters.
Are there standard MBP keyboard combinations that perform the functions of certain 101-key dedicated keys? Such as PageUp/Down, Home/End, (PC) CTRL+Home, CTRL+End, etc? I feel like I've stumbled onto a few, yet there are times (in Safari or some Mac apps) where I can't seem to move as efficiently, using the keyboard, as I was accustomed to on my PC. (I realize key combos could vary by software applications---just looking for any "typical" or fairly standard Mac key combos for easier page/screen/spreadsheet navigation.)
    Thanks!

Thanks for the link, RK... lots to absorb, and hopefully some of those might be applicable in other applications. Perhaps it really comes down to which software programs I'm using, and what the developers of those programs created as shortcut commands, since it seems that some don't handle the same keyboard combinations the same way as other programs...
(As an aside, I'm baffled why the various menus (such as Safari) still give keyboard shortcuts by symbol such as \-, for the Option Key, when in fact the MBP no longer prints all the Mac symbols on the keys themselves! (Just the cloverleaf on Command.) So you need a cheatsheet to remind you which Apple symbol belongs to fn, control, option, in order to then try and memorize the shortcut! Still, don't get me wrong---I'm thrilled with my year-old switch to Mac!)

  • MBP keyboard - similar to the aluminum 2007 keyboard sold separately?

    I love the MBP keyboard.
Does anyone know if the "feel" is the same as for the USB (wired) aluminum keyboard sold separately (which I'm considering getting for my G4)? see: http://www.apple.com/keyboard/
I wish the wired one had a lighted keyboard, but I can't find that info.
    Mrs H

I have the USB keyboard, and the feel of pressing down on the buttons is soft, similar to on the MBP, if that's what you're asking. The buttons are spaced a little further apart than on the MBP keyboard, and you get more keys (plus the fn key is on the right instead of the bottom left). A bit heavier than you'd expect, considering it's thinness. Overall, considering that I find laptop keyboards to be too cramped, causing me to mistype a lot, I'm really glad I bought the thing.
Oh, and sorry, but no backlight.

  • Where are Home, End, Page Up, Page Down on MBP keyboard?

I just bought a MBP-15 after spending my entire computer life with Windows.  I have a fairly sophisticated spreadsheet that I created in Excel that I now want to use in Numbers.  But I'm hung up on the simplest thing - Home & End.  I've read other postings and guides related to the keyboard, but everyone else seems to indicate that there are already Home & End keys (and Page Up/Page Down keys) on the keyboard.  I have none - at least none that I can find.  I just have the standard MBP keyboard, including the F1-F12 function keys (plus fn, option, control, command, & arrows).  All of the key remapping posts talk about their use in text like a Safari e-mail.  For spreadsheets, Windows lets me take a formula in 1 cell, ctrl-c to copy it, then shift-end-down and ctrl-v to paste that new formula to the end of the existing column.  How is this done in the Mac world?  Very frustrating so far.  If it matters, I'm using Numbers '09 with Lion.  Any and all help appreciated.

    Home: fn-left arrow
    End: fn-right arrow
    Page Up: fn-up arrow
    Page down: fn-down arrow
Actions in Numbers may not match those in Excel.
"For spreadsheets, Windows lets me take a formula in 1 cell, ctrl-c to copy it, then shift-end-down and ctrl-v to paste that new formula to the end of the existing column."
(Enter and confirm the formula in the initial cell if it's not already there.)
    Select the initial cell.
Scroll to the bottom row using the thumb on the vertical scroll bar.
Shift-click on the bottom cell to select it and all cells between it and the initial cell.
Go Insert > Fill> Fill Down.
    OR
Select the initial cell (containing the formula)
    Copy (command-C)
Scroll to the last cell as above.
    Shift-click on the last cell.
    Paste (command-V)
Numbers design model favors documents containing several small single purpose tables, not large ones. The maximum size of an individual table is 255 columns by 65355 rows. In practical terms, then limits are much smaller in terms of deteriorating performance speed.
