Temporary system wide freezes

I have a newish Mac Pro that has suddenly started freezing in a very strange way that I've never experienced in Mac's OS. Usually when a program freezes, other programs are responsive including the finder and it's lovely force quit command.
In this case my machine will freeze up on everything at once for 10-30 seconds. When this happens nothing is responsive, ie- I can't click on the desktop, dock or another program to get out of the frozen program. Time stands still and then everything is working again. It doesn't happen in any one program either.
All this started yesterday morning when I came in and my machine was turned off... which never happens. I leave it on overnight for office's backup. It took me several attempts to start it up. When it finally did, these freezes started
I've booted from the OS disk and repaired the disk and permissions. I have ample drive space free (119gbs).
Any ideas folks?

  • System wide freezes since 10.5.5

Ever since upgrading to 10.5.5 I've noticed the following sort of system-wide freeze on my iMac.
First, one application becomes unresponsive; you get the spinning beachball of death; you can still move the mouse around and click; every application becomes unresponsive, including the Finder. Only a hard restart works.
At first I noticed the problem in iChat, and looked into that. Hey presto, other users are experiencing the same problem with iChat, so I wrote to Apple/feedback and sat and waited. I stopped using iChat, and then found it happened in iTunes. Look at the iTunes discussion, and yes, there it is again, other users having the same problem.
I've repaired permissions, run Onyx, done everything I can think of.
Console doesn't have any useful (to me) messages. It says:

That kernel bootcache looks ominous, but I have little idea what it means. I wonder whether it's something to do with Time Machine backing up. Of course, the above might just be totally unrelated to what's going wrong. (Looking at Console is I find rather like looking at a medical dictionary; it's truly frightening, but most of it never in practice seems to be a problem.)
Anyone else experiencing random system freezes only since 10.5.5? Anyone suggest what else I can try or look for in Console to pin things down a bit more?

    Hello all,
Let me chime in on this also... I also experienced freezes immediately after I updated to 10.5.5 from 10.5.4 about 10 days ago. I had never had my Mac (Black MacBook with 4GB or RAM) freeze that much, so I concluded that it had to do with the update.
After multiple freezes, I brought the Mac to the Apple Store where a Genius did a disk check, hardware check and everything checked out OK. However, the random freezes remained. They then did an archive and install *back to 10.5.4*, but same thing, freezes remained. At random intervals.
Around that time, I noticed that if I waited long enough, the machine would return from the freeze and everything would operate normally after that.
I seem to remember that the first ever time I noticed the freeze was when I was working in the Mail application.
After my fifth successive daily visit to the Genius Bar, where they offered to completely format my internal drive, install a fresh copy of 10.5.4 and re-load my data back in. On this, they completely failed me, they returned my computer with half of the applications missing (the iPhoto application was not even on the drive), and my data partially restored.
I then decided to re-format my drive once again, use the 10.5.2 Install Disk that came with my Mac to freshly install the OS. Then immediately thereafter I downloaded the 10.5.5 combo installer and used it to upgrade to 10.5.5. Then, I selectively copied files from my Time Machine backup hard drive back to my internal drive.
Time Machine did not work for me when trying to restore e-mail mailboxes. It only partially imported the mailboxes I needed. Instead I had to do an "import mailboxes" from the Mail application and point it to the mailbox location on my Time Machine backup.
So, now I have a system that is lean and clean, I didn't install any "major" other applications using installers, just a few applications I drag-copied to the Applications folder.
The machine ran fine for a day or two, until I tried to move some mail from my inbox into another mailbox. Boooom, spinning beach ball again. I let the machine sit for about 5 minutes, and it came back. But this indicates that there is still an issue.
Since I also experienced this problem after going back to 10.5.4, I am wondering whether the 10.5.5 install does affect firmware or other device 'hardware' functionality that remains, even after reverting to 10.5.4. This is the only reason I can come up with for why the problem still existed when I went to 10.5.4.
Anyway, this post does not provide a solution, but merely some other data points.
Oh and by the way, I had never even started iTunes before this problem showed up again this morning. So, not sure whether it is related to iTunes.

  • System wide freezes becoming too frequent

If anyone has some insight about where I could track down what might be causing my entire system to freeze would be highly appreciated! The issue doesn't seem to be application specific, and I've run hardware tests and all the other standard maintenance utilities, which all state everything seems to be ok? One possible suspect I thought it could be was my 2 HDs set to cable select, which I read somewhere can sometimes cause issues. So I switched them to master and slave. After doing so, I ran disk utility to repair permissions and it completely locked up again! I can't even force quit! The complete freeze before that, happened while using safari, so thats what I mean by it doesn't seem to be app specific. Another odd thing about the freezes is sometimes I'll get the strange transparent grey screen with the multilingual white letters telling me to restart by holding down the power button, but other times it just locks up with no wierd screen. This has only seemed to become an issue over the past couple of months or so. I'm not unix scripty savy, but is there some kind of command I can use in terminal or console to possibly find some type of log about the last few strings before a freeze? The panic.logs in console show this

I think you are having kernel panics as shown in this Apple doc.#106227. Not all KP screen events are included in that link.
Do everything, in order, in Dr.Smokes Resolving Kernel Panics and don't leave out any steps.
Quote from Dr.Smoke "My FAQ is a roadmap: start at the beginning and work through to the end, following the instruction in the order specified, including the "If all else fails..." section if a cause or resolution is not found in an earlier troubleshooting step therein"

  • System-wide freeze when Time Machine begins back up - Mac Pro 10.7.5

I  have recently upgraded my MacPro Intel Early 2008 to Lion 10.7.5 on an external drive. Overall this nice fresh install has been working very well. The problem is that every 2 hours Time Machine starts its automatic back up and then ...
    A) Music playing on Spotify stops
    B) Curser freezes
    C) Application switching freezes
    D) Current app stops working
This freeze typically lasts about 15 to 30 seconds, or until the small incremental back up is finished.
I have verified the cause using the Console and reading the activity. I read the log 4 times yesterday (it has been doing this since I upgraded a week ago) to confirm this activity. Usually the log reports the begin and finish of the backup with no activity in between, but in the freeze I just had there was activity in the middle relating to Spotify. That most recent log is shown below. For the record, nearly all of the log activity is something to do with Spotify unless I am doing some other system level process.
I have studied other threads, but the symptoms don't really match those, or I don't have the same suspect apps installed. I have run Disk Utility and Disk Warrior on the Time Machine internal drive, and it appears ok. In energy settings the hard drive disks are NOT set to sleep when possible, but the computer will sleep after an hour of inactivity.
My Time Machine is getting large and using some 90% of the disc. I think I need to redo it because the old (10.5.8 & 10.6) and new system (10.7) inadvertantly wrote to the same TM backup. Thoughts on that?
Here is the last freeze (I truncated the IP addresses) ...  and thanks, I appreciate your help. L

Hi Hatter - thanks for the info, interesting. When making these upgrades, which I resisted for as long as possible, I needed to make it as quick and painless, with "minimal" disruption in my work. It still took three weeks to plan and execute, plus it has been a week of fiddling - that is a lot of time to devote to computer maintenance. I kept the original system as a back-up in case things really went south. Also I need 10.5 because I have several active legacy client web sites in GoLive CS2, which I tried in 10.6, but it did not run well.
I agree that doing things off the internal drives is faster to operate, but my approach was prudent. Later I can swap those around. My external 10.7 drive is a WD My Passport Studio, and has had no problems (except the sucker runs pretty hot). I considered the SSD but the price is still high: NewEgg, internal 500GB regular drive today is $60 - 75, 500GB SSD is $340-370. That is a pretty big difference in a small business. I am maxed out on RAM, so that helps a lot.
One last thing though, for the Adobe Creative Suite the scratch discs are the internal drives, so it still runs fast in that sense. Fast is relative ya know, I remember programs taking 40 and 50 seconds to launch, now Photoshop is 19, barely time to drink some coffee.
I have bought a number of UPS over the years, including replacement batteries. It has been expensive frustration, because in a real emergency they seldom do what they promise. In Colorado there are big thunderstorms every summer, and I field tested them a number of times - but was never happy with the protection. Dollar for dollar, investing in a whole house (or whole office) surge arrester at the main utility panel offers protection for the equipment, with about the same amount of time to save your work (which in reality is about 1 second).
I had a ton of connection issues with Spotify working in 10.5, but I am happy to say those have completely gone away with this upgrade. I also like many of the refinements in Lion, such as the improved System Profiler.
Linc, I will will take a look at your suggestion, it is a little vaque. Am I looking for a perticular result ? I don't want to operate for too long with the firewall off.
I think my first step is getting the Time Machine figured out, that could be the whole issue.
Thanks guys for the input -- it is appreciated. L

  • QuickLook causing system-wide freezes/hanging the Finder

    Hello --
Just picked up a brand new MacBook Pro 2.5 GHz, 2GB RAM, 250 MB HD. Running 10.5.2.
QuickLook is causing my entire system to lock up and become completely unresponsive. Here's what is happening:
Using the Finder, I open a folder containing images and sometimes other folders. Anywhere from 6 to 80 images. Strictly JPGs and TIFFs, nothing unusual.
I hit command-A to select all, then command-Y to QuickLook.
QuickLook previews the first image in my selection. And the system is now locked up. My clock stops. Keyboard no longer works (cannot command-tab, cannot command-option-escape, cannot do anything with keyboard). Mouse pointer still moves around, but nothing responds to clicking. Sometimes I get the spinning beach ball for awhile, then it goes back to normal arrow pointer. Still, clicking does nothing, even if I wait. Have waited up to 10 minutes. I always end up pressing the power button to shut the machine down and then restart.
I can re-create this problem, but only when the folder in question has not been QuickLooked before. After forcing a reboot, I can return to the image folder that caused the freeze, open it, command-A, command-Y, and QuickLook works just fine. The QuickLook freeze seems to occur only on a group of images that have never been QuickLooked before.
If somebody has some tips on how I can troubleshoot this, or perhaps any fixes, I would be most grateful.
    Thanks in advance!
    Mike

  • System-wide cluster freeze

    Hello,
We're experiencing many system-wide freeze instances in which many cluster members reported the following errors. We had to shut down cluster members one by one until the remaining system could be freed up. Our customer had many tools to monitor the network health. The network seemed not an issue. We've increased lots of memory to the nodes but there was no correlation to the memory size. What could be other possible causes that Grid.poll() hang?
    Thanks!
    -Edwin

This log indicated the process caused the problem.
    (Wrapped: Interrupted while waiting for response from:[Member(Id=73, Timestamp=2013-05-29 05:38:20.434, Address=10.70.0.50:8090, MachineId=19506, Location=site:machine:TPTEXT50,process:3632, Role=StorageNodeDaemon)]) java.lang.InterruptedException
If you still have the log file from member 73, take a look at the log file. You might find service guardian triggered and thread dump within the log. The log message just before the thread dump section should tell you which thread caused the problem.

  • Very strange, reoccuring temporary system freeze

This is a "new" problem (maybe began several weeks ago, I don't know when it first started) and occurs like once every 1-2 weeks or so, at least when I notice it:
The system suddenly freezes. This is when I'm doing random stuff on the xfce4 desktop. Now I hit CTRL+ALT+F1 to switch to a VTT and the screen goes very slightly darker! The desktop picture remains frozen though, VTT is not popping up. I can't do anything, but if I wait for like a minute (haven't timed it) suddenly everything is back to normal (and I find myself in the VTT 1 and can switch back to X and resume doing whatever I was doing).
I have no idea what's going on so I just typed "dmesg" and got this, any useful?

It happens to me too. Since I installed Arch (1-2 months), I have this issue. It doesn't happen when I use it, but after a long period without activity (at least one night). I am using Enlightenment as window manager.
My graphic card is a NVidia Optimus, where only Intel is enabled.
    Thanks

  • System wide lag

    Hello guys, new member here.
I'd like you guys to help me out with something here.
    I have a 13 inch, mid 2013 macbook pro with a 2.9 ghz i7, 8 gb RAM and a 750 gig HDD.
My problem is every now and then there is a system wide lag which freezes pretty much everything and audio playing from itunes also pauses during that time, it's quite frustrating as i've been searching for a fix since yesterday but havent found anything that can completely fix it. Usually there is only itunes, safari, mail and maybe one or two more things open at a time. I have checked my HDD for issues but there seem to be none. I suspect that this is related to the CPU since while I was using safari, a process called WindowServer would start using around 35% CPU, with nothing that intensive open on the browser
Note: This was ocurring much more frequently this morning but it has gotten a bit better now after I downloaded chrome and started using it instead of safari, I would, however, like to use safari instead.
Thanks in advance, I would be very thankful if someone could help me out with this, I have my exams coming up and I rely on my laptop for a lot of stuff.

I've got this problem on Macbook pro (mid 2010, 2,4ghz i5, 8gb ram, nvidia gt330m)
I don't think it ever happened before upgrading to mavericks. But now it's horrible!
It seems to only happen to me when I'm running unity3D, but does happen every minute or even more often. And the system freezes for anywhere between a second and 15 seconds...

  • System wide configuration file

I have a number of EJBs and plain Java Objects that all share a common set of 'configuration
properties' that the business would like to configure in run-time to affect how
    the EJBs work.
Hence, I think that defining the same properties per EJB deployment descriptor
is overkill and wouldn't allow the business to change all EJBs at once.
What I'm really looking for is a system wide configuration XML file. Has anyone
got any ideas for how to make this a true singleton across the whole application
    (2 app server clusters)??
Database is the obvious choice but seems overkill - the EJBs will use the configuration
information very frequently leading to lots of database reads. Has anyone got
a good 'file' equivalent that does some temporary caching instead?
Long shot I know, but thought that I'd ask.

    OK thanks.
I'm starting to get twitchy about using read only entity beans to represent what
is afterall a set of name/value pairs. So I either:
    1) Have an Entity bean instance per name/value pair. So I use findByPrimaryKey
    (the name of the property)
    2) Have an Entity bean that stores the whole collection of properties internally
and provides a 'getProperty' business method. But I feel like this is bending
the use of Entity beans though (what would findByPrimaryKey do?!)
May just go for a caching POJO instead.

Ah - these were added in WebLogic 7.0. Anyway, readonly beans with multicast
invalidation should be able to do what you want.

Thanks. I understand read-only entity beans but not optimistic. Canyou point
    me at a 6.1 document?

You can use entity beans which cache data between transactions (RO
    or
    optimistic), or
you can use cluster products like JavaGroups (http://sourceforge.net/projects/javagroups/)
    or Coherence (http://www.tangosol.com/products-clustering.jsp).

  • System-wide lag spikes. Possible reasons?

    Hi!
I have been having issues with my iMac for quite some time now and i have never really succeeded to figure out what might be causing it. The profromance of my iMac on regular basis is outstanding as I would expect it to be. How ever, every once in a while i would get an system-wide "lag spike". Everything would frzee for a second or two and the rainbow loading circle pointer would appear. During that time i cannot do absolutely anything besides move the mouse pointer.
This issue, I believe, started to take place after i replaced my HDD with SSDs. I have two raided OCZ Aggility 3 drives. I use the iMacs old HDD as an external storage. The old HDD has been formatted. Also i would like to point out that according to some standard SDD benchmarks i am not getting the performance one would expect from them.
Else than that, my iMac is mid 2010 2,8 ghz i5, i have 12gigs for 1333 DDR3 and im currently running on Mavericks, but i did have this issue on the previous versions as well.
This is my first post ever so please go easy on me. If you feel i havent written or explained enough please do let me know and i will see it corrected.

  • System Preferences freezes while opening Sharing

    System Specs :
    Hardware :
    iMac8,1
2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 2 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
    Software :
    Mac OS X 10.6.8 (10K549)
    Fully updates snow leopard
It was running smoothly till I checked "upgrade software" and upgraded the listed upgrades i.e. iTune, Aiprport utility, and JAVA. Just after the upgrade, other computers could not connect to my iMac through ssh (Remote Login). It syas connection refused.
My iMac connects to the network through Aitrport. The Airport versions (after upgrade is now given below)
Airport Base Station Agent : 1.5.5
    Airport Utility : 5.6.1
I tried to look at the System Preferences Sharing tab, but when I click Sharing, System Preferences freezes. Otherwise System Preferences works but only when I click the Sharing preference, it freezes and I have to quit it through Force Quit.
I tried to delete the system preference plist from Library/Preferences and tried deleting library cache but nothing works. I am helpless now as my computer is being shared through the network all the time.
I don't know whether Airport is the culprit. But the problem happened just after the Airport upgrade. Otherwise I never changed anything in the network.
Please advise. Thanks for your suggestions.

To find out if it's system wide or user specific, try this...
Open System Preferences>Accounts, unlock the lock, click on the little plus icon, make a new admin account, log out & into the new account.
Does Sharing pane work in the new account?

  • File Type Associations Do Not Stick System-Wide CS4

When I set File Type Associations for PSD, Tiff, DNG and Jpeg fles in Bridge CS4 so that my files will open in PS CS3 (and insure that the same file associations apply in Bridge CS3), this works as it should from within CS4 and CS3, but it is impossible to introduce a system-wide change in Mac OS 10.5.5 via File-Info. It always reverts to CS4 for these file types, if I try to 'modify all'. The same thing happened when I upgraded from CS2 to CS3.

If File Type Associations are set properly in the Bridge preferences, the default setting can be made to open files in PS CS3, with CS4 installed. This works from within CS3 and CS4. However, it sometimes happens that one is in the Finder, and the default remains PS CS4, however much one tries (via File-Get Info) to modify the default system-wide settings so that these files open in CS3. In any event, a bit invasive. Of course, if I could get comfortable with the Adjustment Layer Panels, all this would be unnecessary, but for the moment, there appear to be too many clicks, and it is going to take some time, so I don't want to burn bridges. Perhaps there is also some ambiguity in my mind as to what the pointing finger in the new Curves dialogue box, much like a tolling bell, is trying to tell me.
But thanks, once again Anne, for your good-natured help.

  • System-wide spell check will not work

    Hi,
I can't get the system-wide spell check to work on my MacBook Pro with the Command + Shift + ; (semicolon) keys. Does anyone know of a solution to this problem? The Spell-Check on the Fly will work.
    Thank You,
    Guy

I was able to zap the pram and that solved the problem.

  • ITunes 10.7 crashes all apps on Mountain Lion including Force Quit. First system wide prob with an apple computer since OSX introduced. Any ideas?

updated to iTunes 10.7  from app Store last night. After the update, iTunes opens then stalls with the "spinning pizza wheel". Force Quit is unresponsive and will not shut it down. If I then open other applications say Safari for example, the problem migrates over to Safari and it similarly stalls and becomes unresponsive. The only way to solve the problem is to manually shut the computer down. This is the most significant problem I have experienced on an apple computer since OSX was introduced because it impacts on Force Quit which means that you have to shut the whole deal down. There are obvious problems for use of Apple TV and apple store etc. ! I am running mountain lion 10.8.1 on a 27" iMac with 2T Time Capsule connected wirelessly. How do I downgrade iTunes back to 10.6? I had no problems with Mountain Lion or iTunes up to that point.

this is the exact same problem i've been dealing with for the past 2 days. after i installed itunes 10.7 for my iphone5 it would crash my mbp's lion system wide. i tried every solution i could find on google and i've actually had to reinstall lion & time machine my backups because of it. right now i'm too scared to redownload itunes 10.7. i actually feel like waiting for the "new itunes" that comes out in october.

  • Is there any way to create a system-wide variable?

    Hello IDM gurus.
Is there any way to create rarely changing system wide variables that can be loaded at system startup that will be available to all users? For example, at IDM system startup, the variables would be read from configuration or generic objects and live in memory for ALL users as opposed to each workflow/user having to read the same variables when the workflow is run.
    Any help would be appreciated.

That may very well be the answer I'm looking for. Is there a way for that to be available within the entire application instead of having to read it in each workflow?
