Temps and a new heatsink

Right now I have an Athlon 64 2800+ using a stock heatsink that I am overclocking until I build my new system next year.
After about two hours of Prime 95 it runs 54C-56C and it idles between 30C and 35C with cool and quiet on.
I would like to push my system even harder but am afraid that my temps are borderline already without adding even more voltage to my cpu.
Do these temps seem ok to everyone?
If they aren't I was thinking about buying the Thermaltake Silentboost K8.

Danjos, you got MBM5 to work on your board? That utility is no longer developed and hasn't been for quite some time. You should post how you got it to work.
Speedfan will also monitor temps and it is still being updated.
It just works, 80% anyway.
not everything works, fan control doesnt work.  But it recognises all the temp sensors and displays them correctly, probably not the best tool but im just used to it, i like having the temps in the tool bar.

  • Northbridge temps and the new bios update

    I know the Northbridge temperature issue has been posted before. But I’m posting in relations to the new bios update supposed to be released 08/24. Will these temp issues be resolved in this new bios update?
    There could be many reasons why the Northbridge temps are so high, ranging from bad heatsink design to Northbridge fan blowing too fast. Mine runs 55C idle which is way too high…but when I go to touch the heatsink, it’s barely warm. A lot of people have been complaining about the “light show” on the Northbridge, but heck I like it. I think it’s pretty cool
    One last thing I’d like to bring up, this new bios update, I don’t know whether or not 1.6 supports DDR500mhz Ram (because I don’t have it yet) but will it support it? Reason being is I plan on buying DDR500mhz Ram and do some more overclocking.
    1:1 Cpu to Ram ratio here I COME!!! :D

    ROFLMAO  (first sign of insanity when you laugh about a such sad matter)
    Maesus, its nothing personal, but do you really believe there will be a v1.8 BIOS? To me it looks like MSI has abandoned the 875P. BIOS v1.7 is supposed to come when? ...August 28th? That's 2 months since the last one and as far as I have heard there has not much changed over v1.6. When is v1.8 supposed to come? Another 2 months later? Not to speak of v1.9... That makes about 5 months to get the board working the way it was supposed to do from the first day (if v1.7 solves something at all).
    Sorry, but MSI is about to lose all trustworthiness with this so called support. And moderators in a company's forum who are not even employees of that company, and have to take guesses (see Prescott support) about the products, do not help to make the situation much better (again, nothing personal). If the support team would take a look by themselves on a regularly basis (1-2 times a week) perhaps then the problems would be solved much faster. If I would work like this and not care about the customers I would have lost my job long ago.
    There are still many problems. The board is on the market for some months now and memory compatibility and timings are still an issue.
    I've visited many forums the last week. And I do hear (read) almost the same everywhere: Poeple who bought the 875P board say its high quality and has good features, if it only would work as supposed. MSI miserably fails to give it a working BIOS. Results in polls about "MSI 875P board good or bad" tend to be weighed horribly to "bad". Most of the ppl will never again buy a MSI board because they feel left alone with their problems.
    It is clear that ppl who are satisfied do not post that in forums. But when something is wrong, they do, because they want the problems solved. But what are support forums good for when no one is listening to the complaints?
    In times who prices are almost the same for the products, ppl tend to buy that product, that not only has the best features but also good support. When it comes to that MSI is not first choice.

    My iPad (new 16gb) is often high temp and makes many times restarts. Is this problem? What should I do?

    Take it back. Dont try to trouble shoot. I just upgraded to the new ipad last week. Mine doesnt do that. It doesnt even get that "hot" like people say. A little warmer, yes. It should no way keep restarting due to temperature. If someone here says its normal, they are full of crap. Dont screw around with it, just take it back asap and explain it to apple. You will get another one.

  • Temp and bios question

    Okay, new to the board and I must say I am impressed. Not a lot of hating goin on.
    First the details:
    MSI 875P NEO-FISR mobo bios v3.5
    Intel P4 2.8 800fsb - Northwood not overclocked- stock HS/Fan
    ATI Radeon X800Pro
    Kingston DDR400- 2x512
    Lite-on CD RW / DVD RW
    Samsung 120GB SATA HDD 7200rpm
    Win2K SP4
    Aspire X-Alien case with 6 80mm fans - 420w PSU
    Hopefully thats enough info...anyway my problem is the temp on my CPU has suddenly went up by almost 20 degrees C. Im wondering if it is the latest BIOS. I had updated every time from 3.1 up to 3.3 and I decided to not put on 3.4 just out of laziness. I did update to 3.5
    Before my temps would run 28-29C idle and after serious gaming it might go up to 45C. the other day I noticed it was idle at 49C and gaming would jump to 63-64C. I have CoreCenter set to shutdown at 65C because I don't trust it. Nothing has really changed other than the BIOS and a newer version of CoreCenter. I blew off HS last night, but no change...it really was not dusty, only had system for few months now...My X800 runs in same area as always, so I dont think it is an ambient temp problem. I also uninstalled CoreCenter and installed an older version, but no change.
    I was wondering if anyone else had this problem. Could it be the temps were wrong before, and they have been fixed with a subsequent BIOS?
    Could be they are wrong now?
    I'm thinking of buying a Zalman HS/Fan, but it doesnt make sense that what was running really cool before is now running hot with same HS/Fan...so Im not sure if I NEED to buy a new HS/Fan or wait to see if next BIOS fixes problem.
    CoreCenter is only program I have used so far, so I will try SpeedFan when I get home and post the results of that tonite or tomorrow, I wanted to post this to see if there might be some other having same problem, or another possible fix. I was afraid to flash BIOS back to previous version...I was not sure what would happen. Is this possible? Should I try it and are there any "gotchas" in doing that?
    thanks for any information you have.

    okay, so I disabled CoreCenter and installed Speedfan using Danny's guide. SpeedFan has actually dropped the temps from idle at 49C to 41C and gaming gets up to about 62 C still...one interesting thing is CoreCenter would only allow my fan at max speed to just under 4,000 RPM (if I remember correctly) and SpeedFan on max is over 5400 RPM which I am thinking is responsible for the 8 degree drop in idle temp.
    With all the info you guys have provided like the water cooled system running same temp, Im thinking it is the BIOS. Why would a water cooled system run same temp as a stock HSF setup, even if the BIOS update bumped the temps up 20 degrees, I would think the WC system would still be running cooler, like 38-39C compared to our 45-46C.
    Anyway, Im thinking Im going to hold off on purchasing an aftermarket HSF and see what the next BIOS brings. I feel comfortable that the bios is throwing the temp READINGS off and the actual temp is not hotter than it has ever been.....I guess....heh. I do like how SpeedFan is controlling the temp better than CoreCenter...if you guys have not tried it, you might want to. It did lower my temp readings 8-9C. Here is the link to the thread on setting it up.

  • Weired voltage cpu temp and fan speed readings

    Built this system last week when i install core center I get no 3.3 v readings. cpu temp plays between 18c to 60c and the fan speed from 800 t0 6000rpm. Check in the bios all voltage readings are fine but cpu temp and fan readins can be way off. Also installed lastest versions of mbm and get the same results. Flashed bios to latest version also. Cool and quiet is not activated. Weired thing everything runs fine.                                                                                                                  motherboard k8t neo2                                                                                      cpu amd 64 3500                                                                                              memory corsair 3200LL 1024                                                                            video card BFG 6800gt                                                                                       sound Audigy 2                                                                                                  hard drive   WD 120 sata                                                                                    liteon dvd rom and cd-r                                                                                      power supply Antec 480watt neo power                                                               Everything is at stock speeds with all latest drivers and xp sp2. Don't know what can be the problem. Please help not the first systeme I have built but first time I encounter this problem. Tried 3 different psu for testing and get the same result.

    Well sorry to say I solved the problem for good. Contacted MSI support. Only answer I got was Maybe the board was bad. Got it exchanged from the store and got an Asus av8 deluxe rev.2 instead. Everything runs fine. It was my first MSI board and sad to say it gave me a lot of headaches and configeration problems. The new setup ran great on the first try. Don't  think I will buy MSI again in the near future.

  • New heatsink yet random shutdown!!

    Hi y'all,
    So my MB was repaired 2nd time with the new heatsink part and this was on Oct. 3rd.
    Today on Oct 13th the random shutdown has reappeared yet AGAIN.
    I have just about had it this macbook.
    Did any of yours had random shutdown after the reparation with the new heatsink part??
    And do anyone know if I will be eligible for a refund and/or replacement since I have had to deal with this problem three times now?? (still in waranty period)
    Thanks

    jhawk - three possibilities. First, are you sure you got the newly designed heatsink? Oct 3 would be right about on the cusp between new heatsink and the old replace the logic board 'fix'. Second, assuming you did get the new heatsink your computer should then have been retested on diagnostics and a new logic board installed if it failed and if it passed it would be sent back without a new logic board. But it is posible that in some cases RSD is masking (and maybe even causing) logic board issues that don't show up on the diagnostics then but show up later. This could be your problem and if so after getting a new logic board your MacBook problems would be over. Third, and I hope this isn't it, Apple hasn't found all the causes of RSD yet.
    It is still a little too soon to know about this either way. Based on past RSD repair experiences, if the redesigned heatsink does fix the problem we can expect to continue seeing RSD me too messages through October and probably into the first part of November but the frequency should begin to die down in November.

  • Still worried about temp and a lock

    I had basically accepted the fact that my CPU temp reading at 59C running delta force 2 was about average for the XP2500 barton and a KT6LSR. Happy and content I was, after my initial worry and lapping of heatsink, thermal paste change etc.
    Well the other day it was getting warm again playing DF2 when all of a sudden a complete lock. A quick reset revealed 60C roughly during lock. My dads computer, same setup almost, did exaclty the same thing and regularly does it but his temps are higher as normal by 2 degrees.
    Should I start to consider watercooling again?
    Should I fan the NB? It gets bloody hot with no fan - a lame leave-out for MSI for essentially the same board as the model with it.

    Your psu is too weak...
    You need more than 30A/3.3V, 35A/5V, 18A/12V and 180w combined power. Especially the 12V-rail is very importand for a modern board/vga/cpu
    Fair enough I suppose, sorry, I was just in a bad mood (hungry) and it seemed a little pointless at the time.
    I did wonder about the PSU on this one but I was assured it was sufficient at the time or purchase - think thats my next purchase then. Thanks for the tip.
    osnavi - room temp is around 20C. I found that by simple placing an 80mm fan on my graphics card (pointing at the NB and CPU fan) I can drop my running temps down to 50 and 32!

  • MBP cpu temps and fanspeed help

    So I have a MBP intle core i5 2.5GHz with 4 GB of ram, I thinkits either a 2008 model or 2010, I bought it new in 2010.
    It has always gotten pretty hot, but thats what MBPs are supposed to do, I get it, but lately I have been testing temps and RPM with istat pro and rmcfancontrol and I think there may be a problem.
    my temps all seem fine exceptmy CPU temp, which is regularly above 70 degrees. when doing semi extensive things like watching videos, streaming netflix or menial photoshop tasks, it is generally 80-85, with the fans around 3.5k RPM to 5K RPM. If I plug in my new 21 inch monitor (1920x1028 resolution) and play online poker, watch videos, or any design tasks involving adobe programs, ive seen it jump as high as 94 degrees, and im sure RPM atleast 6k, these may both go even higher as I have not tested the max yet.
    this is usually when I have say an online poker lobby with tables going, a tracking software db running, skype on and firefox on. one question I have is, will tthere be less strain on the cpu if I drop the resolution of my new monitor? I dont want to drop it past 1600x1000 (not sure of the exact dimensions) because then it is defeating the purpose of why I bought a new larger screen with a high res.
    second, I already run a desk sized fan on my MBP while it sits on an elevated pad (0.25 in approx) with 2 build in fans, left and right. The cpu is located just above the ESC button and that is where the heat is obviously centered so i place my cooling efforts as much as I can on that area.
    my next question is, with fancontrol, how high can i force the fans to run and for how long while doing these kind of tasks on dual monitors? Can I set the left side fan to run at 5-6k as a default when playing a session of online poker (this is my part time job so its an important question) while leaving the right fan at 2k? or would it be better to keep them balanced? how long can they run at high rpm before it could cause problems? how long can my mbp run at constant temps of 80-95 degrees before it is dangerous for it? like I said it is mostly common for it to be between 75-85 at most times.
    and last but not least, could this be a defect that it runs at such high temps? could it be my fans that are just plugged up and need a cleaning or replacing?
    all suggestions are welcome, thank you

    Of course. A smaller resolution will require less performance to your dedicated graphic card. Note that your Mac has got two graphic cards (an Intel card and a NVIDIA GeForce one), and your computer switches to the dedicated graphic when it requires more graphic performance.

    We don't recommend smcFanControl because your Mac knows what's the correct fan speed and because this application modifies the SMC.
    It's not good that your fans run at maximum speed for a long time (5000 rpm is too high). Now, the best you can do is to reset the SMC > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964 If you have problems with the fan speed, this should solve the problem.

    If the SMC reset doesn't work, I suspect two things: the first, that you have a hardware problem, and the second, that there's a process eating CPU and memory when you are using the computer, because those temperatures are not normal. Also, at that fan speed, they may fail

  • What is the diffrence between extends and creating new object?

    HI ALL,
    what is the diffrence between extends and creating new object?
    meaning
    class base{
    class derived extends base{
    class base{
    class derived {
    derived(){
    base var = new base();
    can u people tell me diffence from the above examples.
    THANKS.
    ANANDA

    When you create a new object you have to supply the class to which that
    object belongs. A class can extend from another class. If it does so
    explicitly you can define the 'parent' class from which the class extends.
    If you don't explicitly mention anything, the class will implicitly extend
    from the absolute base class named 'Object'.
    Your example is a bit convoluted: when you create a Derived object,
    its constructor creates another object, i.e. an object from the class from
    which the Derived class extends.
    Extending from a class and creating an object don't have much in common.
    kind regards,
    Jos

    Lightroom doesn't use the Camera Raw plug-in. All of the Camera Raw technology is part of the Lightroom program. You will either have to upgrade to Lightroom 5 or use the DNG converter to create digital negative copies that can be used with Lightroom 4.

  • If i update my iphone 4 to the ios5 will it erase all my stuff on it if i use a new computer and a new itunes with nothing on it?

    can anyone tell me if i update my iphone to the new ios5 will it erase all of my personal things on it if i use a new computer and a new itunes that has nothing on it? or will the back up save all my music and pictures and stuff like that? thanks

    I had to go through this today (got a new computer recently). I ended up pluggng in my phone to the new computer and then doing a sync and a backup, and Image Capture to get all your pics just in case. Then I did an update check wnen iOS 5 became active and it said that it was going to erase everything and I hit OK. And after that install was complete, I did "restore from backup" which said it would restore everything that was backed up except the new iOS 5 firmware (that stayed put). Just a few tweaks here and there and it all worked for me.
    Hope this helps a bit

  • How can i view and apply new custom patterns without going to preset manager? i had this facility but have now lost it

    how can i view and apply new custom patterns without going to preset manager? i had this facility but have now lost it.  i design patterns but am fairly new to photoshop. i used to be able to click on the drop down menu in patterns in the 'fill' box but cannot now do this.  have i inadvertently clicked on something to turn this facility off?  i now have to go to 'preset manager' and manually move my new design to the first box and click 'done' so that i can use it.

    Which version of photoshop are you using?
    After you define a custom pattern it should be added to the bottom of whatever patterns are already loaded.
    For example, if you define a custom pattern and then go to Edit>Fill>Pattern, the newly defined pattern should have been added to the existing loaded patterns.
