i see that i have a problem after installing my new hard drive on my macbook pro mid 2009 version. I put a new hard drive, with all of my information from my old drive installed on it, into the computer. but now have the blinking question mark folder. I see that it means that it isn't reading the new hard drive.
did i miss a step between transferring all of my information from my old hard drive to the new hard drive and installing the new hard drive into the computer. I believe that i installed properly. it was quite easy.
    thanks for your help

It means there is no bootable system on the drive. If you still have access to the old drive, then I suggest you boot from it then clone it to the new internal drive. Use OPTION boot to boot from the Recovery HD on the old drive:
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
         1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu then press the Continue
             button.
         2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
         3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
         4. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it
             to the Destination entry field.
         5. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to
             the Source entry field.
         6. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Source means the external old drive. Destination means the new internal drive.

  • I have a password problem. After importing data and settings from one MacBook Pro to a new one, I have to put my iCloud password in when re-starting, but the password from the old computer in when waking the computer from sleep.

I have a password problem. After importing data and settings from one MacBook Pro to a new one, I have to put my iCloud password in when re-starting the new computer, but the password from the old computer in when waking the computer from sleep. I want to use my iCloud password on both computers consistently. How can I fix this?

The only other place to change a password for the computer login is in Users & Groups preferences. But I don't really know enough here to fix your problem. You can try fixing the keychain:
iCloud- Frequently asked questions about iCloud Keychain
    Tutorial: Resolving Keychain Issues
If you can't access your keychain, or forget your password If you can't get into your keychain file because you've forgotten your password or the keychain file appears to be corrupt, there are a couple of options.
First, if you've forgotten your password, you can use the "Keychain First Aid" utility to make the keychain password the same as the login password. This can be accomplished via the following process:
      1. Open Keychain Access (located in Applications/Utilities)
      2. Go to the "Keychain Access" menu and select "Preferences"
      3. Click the "First Aid" tab
      4. Make sure the "Synchronize login keychain password" box is checked
      5. Close the Preferences window
      6. Go to the "Keychain Access" menu and select "Keychain First Aid"
      7. Enter your username and password
      8. Click the "Repair" button
The second option is to completely delete your keychain then recreate it. This routine is useful if your keychain appears to be corrupt or otherwise inaccessible. This can be accomplished as follows:
      1. Launch Keychain Access (located in Applications/Utilities)
      2. Click "Show Keychains" in the lower-left corner of the window.
      3. Select the problematic keychain from the left-hand pane.
      4. Navigate to the "File" menu and select "Delete Keychain '(name of keychain)'"
      5. Check all options for deletion and press "OK"
      6. Create a new keychain by going to the "File" menu, then "New" and selecting
          "New Keychain"
      7. You can now make this keychain your default if you desire by selecting it, then
going to the "File" menu and selecting "Make '(name of keychain)' Default"
Login as root and perform repair In some cases, problems with keychains can only be resolved when logged in as the root user.
First, you want to enable the root user:
      1. OS X Mountain Lion: Enable and disable the root user
      2. OS X Lion: Enable and disable the root user
      3. Mac OS X 10.6: Enabling the root user
      4. Enabling and using the "root" user in Mac OS X
After enabling the root user, and logging in under this account, again open Keychain Access. First attempt repairs using Keychain First Aid, and failing that, delete then recreate the keychain as described above while logged in as root.
Persistently asked for stored passwords If you are persistently asked for passwords in various applications that you have specified should be remembered in a keychain, your "login" keychain may not be active for one reason or another.
Navigate to ~/Library/Keychains/ (this is the Library folder inside your user's home folder). Find the file named "login.keychain" and double-click it.
Failing that, select the "login" keychain within the Keychain Access application and make sure it is the default keychain by going to the "File" menu and selecting "Make 'Login' Default"
Turn off Keychain synchronization in applications having problems If specific applications are experiencing issues when accessing password-protected material, the Keychain may be to blame.
The above comes from an article published on MacFixit.com.

  • Problems with selection marquee in Photoshop CS5.5 on MacBook Pro with Hi-Res Display

A few months ago i bought a 15" MacBook Pro with the hi-res display (not retina display...just the higher res display offered prior to the release of the retina display).
I'm having trouble with Photoshop and selection marquees. In particular, anytime I make a selection while viewing the image at 100% zoom level (so, actual pixels), the "marching ants" selection marquee I draw always shifts over a few pixels after I draw it.
So I'll make a precise rectangular marquee around an object, and it will look right, until I release the button on my mouse. The moment I release the mouse button, the marquee shifts over a few pixels in both directions (vertically and horizontally).
This has never happened on any version of Photoshop or on any Mac I've ever used before (and I've been using Photoshop for a LONG time on LOTS of different Macs), so I can only assume it has something to do with the Hi-Res display. This same version of Photoshop works just fine on my previous MacBook Pro laptop. But after installing it on the new MacBook, immediately - and consistently, every time - it happens.
If I zoom in and use the tool, it doesn't have the problem. It seems to only occur when viewing at 100% (which is usually for me), but it does do it EVERY TIME I use the rectangular marque tool.
It's driving me a little bit batty.
    Anyone else?

An update...I had thought to try changing the Open GL settings, but it didn't seem to make any difference. However, I hadn't realized that you need to restart Photoshop for changes made to the Open GL preferences to take effect, so I wasn't actually changing anything.
Turns out, it's an Open GL drawing issue - and disabling it fixes the problem.
Of course, you also lose all of the other enhancements that come from enabling Open GL drawing.
I'm only leaving this discussion up in case anyone else with the same problem stumbles across the issue.

  • Hi,I am unsure if I have a safari or modem problem. It only happens when I use my macbook pro, my HP windows is fine. Internet crashes on modem and then a message that safari is not connected. I don't know where to start sorry I am not technical at all.

Hi there, my internet is crashing everytime I use my macbook pro/safari it happens roughly every 2 mins, it can happen on any website.
I am not technical at all and I am at a total loss of where to start with this. I did a bit of research on the internet but no luck in finding any
    help.
Basically I am not sure if it is a modem of safari problem. I have no problems when using my HP on without windows explorer on the internet.
I am working wireless ADSL 2 - Bigpond - 2 Wire 2701 HGV-W and a macbook pro purchased around 5 months ago. Since the purchase date
I have had problems with internet.
Safari brings up a page you are not connected to the internet. I then look at the modem and DSL and internet lights are both flickering and or/off.
They then re-set themselves. I then have to re-set preferences on safari and quit and restart.
I have also tried using with cable into mac and modem and no difference.
I can only figure that maybe Safari is not compatible with the modem? could this be the case?
Thanks for reading and any assistance would be appreciated.

There's an Apple help page on the DNS problem - at http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3408
The first thing to try is changing your DNS settings - and for that you need to open System Preferences, then the
    Network section.
In Network - click  on Advanced - then the DNS tab
under DNS servers - use the + button to enter two extra lines
    either these, from google dns
    8.8.8.8
    8.8.4.4
    or from OpenDNS
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
then click OK & then 'Apply'
You would need to do that seperately for the Cable (Ethernet) settings and Wireless (Airport)

  • Problem w/mini-display to DV I adapter, a Macbook Pro 13" & 30" Cinema Disp

I recently switched out my old 15" MacBook Pro for a new 13" version. My old MBPro had a DVI input and the connection between that machine and my 30" Studio Display was not a problem.
However, as I now have the 13" and need to use the mini-display adapter I am getting occasional screen flicker and worse, total static on the screen. It's like I'm in the 1950 watching a B&W TV with rabbit ears.
I have checked and rechecked all of the connectors, but this has become a daily battle to get a clear picture.
I know the display has some years on it, but it's been good till now and I'd like to hold on to it.

Make sure you have the latest version of the Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI adapter. Check via System Profiler (Utilities folder). It should be at least 1.0.2
    <http://mjtsai.com/blog/2009/10/03/mini-displayport-to-dual-link-dvi-adapter-imp roved/>
It could also be a problem with USB power for the adapter. If you have a charger for iPhones or iPods that use USB, try using it to power the adapter (plug the display's USB cable into the computer).

  • Problems downloading photos from new camera into i photo macbook pro os  ver 10.6.8, new camera Olympus VR340, iphoto version 9.2.3 -- any thoughts?

Have a "vintage macbook pro running snow leopard os vers. 10.6.8.  Just bought a new camera -- Olympus VR 340.  Yesterday the photos downloaded into iphoto with no problerms.  Today they won't -- in fact -- iphoto just has the turning wheel and won't function (version 9.2.8).  Any thoughs about what the problem is and how to get it to work again? Never had problems with iphoto before -- with multiple cameras.
    thanks.

Quit iPhoto, then go to Users / your home folder / Library / Preferences.
In that folder you will find two files named com.apple.iPhoto.LSSharedFileList.plist and com.apple.iPhoto.plist
trash both files, then restart iPhoto.
Next go to iPhoto/Preferences and make sure you have selected Connecting Camera Opens: iPhoto

  • Native resolution problem on Boot Camp running Windows 8.1 on Macbook PRO 15 (2011)

    Hello
Couple days ago I purchased a DELL U2414h display, and I came across some problems while trying to use it with Windows 8.1 on Boot Camp.
Everything works like a charm on MAC OS X and I get 1680x1050 resolution on my 2011 15 inch Macbook PRO, and 1920x1080 on the external DELL display.
The problem starts when I run Windows 8.1... I get my native resolution on the Macbook, but the maximum usable resolution on the external display is 1776x1000. There's an option to choose 1920x1080, but when I do that, the screen looks blurry. Is there any way to overcome this problem?
I'm using HDMI Adapter, and I installed all the drivers which were downloaded while installing the Boot Camp
    Cheers
    Patryk

No I haven't, but could it be the case? The same display with the same adapter works fine while running the MAC OS X.
But yeah, the adapter converts the mini display port to HDMI (as far as I know)
    Thanks for the reply

  • Upgrade problems-10.9.1 to 10.9.2 on MacBook Pro

Running OS 10.9.1 on Macbook Pro model A1286, atempting to upgrade to 10.9.2
After update, can't get past either Apple logo only, or occasional 2 seconds of logo and spin indicator, which then freezes.
    Phase one of repair attempt-
Reinstalled OS 10.9.1 from Time Machine backup, and then 10.9.1 wouldn't work. After several rounds of resetting NVRAM, verifying and repairing permissions, 10.9.1 restarted, "magically."
    Phase two-
Upgraded to 10.9.2 again (download from app store.) and previous problem reoccured.
10.9.2 will boot in safe mode and recovery mode. All diagnostics say hard drive is fine, and permissions verified and repaired several times. Have considered a reinstall of earlier OS from recovery boot, but a) would rather not, and b) when I tried that option, I got a dialog window that said (in effect) the version I have (10.9.1) is newer than 10.7.1 (recovery mode install version) and will not install.
Interestingly, when I run permissions repair, I repeatedly get the same messages- about twenty lines of
"ACL found but not expected on...(various Library, Audio, Preferences, etc...)"
This happens on each verification and permissions repair.
    Please advise.
    Thanks!

Sorry, CaliJoe and johnwbeck1- No real good news to report. I finally took it into a MacStore and had them clean install 10.9.1 and upgrade it to 10.9.2. I then used Migation Assistant from a Time Machine backup on an external disc. This successfully transferred my apps, and all the files that weren't on my desktop, for some reason. It did not succeed in transferring many settings, and as I mentioned, my desktop. I did that in target disk with a firewire cable. I'm still in the middle of changing over preferences by hand on several different programs. Wish I had better to report.

  • I lose connection with network whenever put MacBook Pro to sleep or reboot. Lost network configuration. Have to use diagnostics to relocate and reconnect. What is the fix?

I lose connection with network (router: Airport Extreme, latest firmware) whenever MacBook Pro put to sleep. Have to use diagnostics to reconnect. Tells me network configurations have changed, then reconnects me to network. What is the fix?

Try the following, in order, until (hopefully) resolved:
    1a. Delete Preferred Network(s)
System Preferences > Network > AirPort > Advanced > AirPort tab
Under "Preferred Networks," delete the network(s) you regularly use from the list.
    1b. Delete AirPort Keychain Entries
Launch the "Keychain Access" application located in Applications/Utilties.
Click on the "Kind" filter at the top, and look for any "AirPort network password" entries...and delete them.
    1c. Add Preferred Network(s)
System Preferences > Network > AirPort > Advanced > AirPort tab
Add the preferred network(s) using the "+" button.
Restart or log out then back in.
    2. Move System Configuration Files
(Note: You will have to reestablish your network connections settings.)
    Go to /Library/Preferences
Move the SystemConfiguration folder to the desktop.
Restart your Mac. (Note: OS X will rebuild the files that are now sitting on your desktop. If this doesn't resolve the issue, you can move the folder back to it's original location.)

  • Problem connecting an external display or projector to Retina Macbook Pro

I have a problem with my rMBP (MAC OS:10.8.2) and i'm not sure if it is just an easy fix or if there is a serious hardware issue.
I connect my rMBP to an external projector Hitachi CPX3011 (max resolution 1600x1200) very often for my presentation.
I use a Thunderbolt port to mini display port to VGA adapter to connect my laptop to this projector.
When I plug it into my projector the screen on my rMBP goes black and nothing shows up on the projector.
I try both of the Thunderbolt port, the rMBP switches resolutions and goes back
I called Apple, but the guy just told me to they never encounter this before, (case number 368401545).
Is there something that I am missing here???
Or do you guys think that my Thunderbolt port could be faulty.
By the way, just to be a little more descriptive. When I connect my projector to my rMBP on the port that doesn't work, my screen immediately turns black. I can still see my mouse pointer, but its incredibly HUGE. About the size of a dime.
Please help if you can. I really appreciate it. Check out the video for this problem.

I had the similar problem but it was specific to running windows 7 through bootcamp.  The only way i was able to get the laptop to work with a projector was by purchasing a USB 3 to Vga dongle (essentially an external graphics card)
