Bienvenido/a

  • Booting an iMac from a PowerMac??

I have an old PowerMac G4 and a newer, intel-based iMac. No monitor for the G4.
Just was wondering, is it possible to boot an iMac from a PowerMac?

It may be possible, but the following IF conditions must be met.
    1. The Power Mac G4 is capable of starting up in FireWire Target Disk Mode.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1661
    2. The startup disk on the Power Mac G4 has Leopard. Leopard is universal. Tiger has separate PowerPC and Intel builds. You won't be able to start up an Intel Mac with PowerPC Tiger.
    3. The startup drive in the Power Mac G4 is the set to master, if it is on an IDE bus that has two drives (as master/slave). FireWire Target Disk Mode will only allow access to the drive set to master.
    4. The Power Mac G4 is able to start up (normally or in target mode) with no display connected.
If you can do 1-4, connect the Power Mac G4 (in target mode) to the iMac. On the iMac, select the Power Mac's hard drive as the startup disk in System Preferences +Startup Disk+ pane. Restart the iMac.
For point #4, if the Power Mac G4 is able to start up normally with no display connected, and it has at least Tiger as the OS, please post back. I'm not sure what you are trying to achieve, but there may be a better solution using the screen-sharing feature.

To to the App Store and purchse iPhoto 9.5.1.  So many people have had problems with iPhoto 8 with Mavericks that it's worth while to purchase the upgrade to 9.5.1.
    Othjerwise try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete the contents the following folder:
    User/Library/Containers/com.apple.iPhoto
3 - reboot, launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: For Mavericks, 10.9,  go to your Home folder and use the View ➙ Show View Options menu to bring the this window:
where you can check the Show Library Folder checkbox.

    Imac 27".
i do not like the idea of repairing every month.
Feel the imacs supplied to India are sub standard ones

Folks have reported that the Apple policy is three major component failures and the Mac is replaced. For the first two the Mac is repaired. Apple would not risk alienating its customers from one of the most populated nations in the world, so its time to stop the "discriminating against the poor Indians and selling us sub-standard Macs" routine. Occasionally the universe aligns just right for there to be a Mac lemon. Folks in every country have experienced lemons. It is the hazard of manufacturing millions of Macs with even more millions of parts, all produced by different parts suppliers. And it is why the manufacturer's warranty exists.
Speak to the vender about a replacement. If necessary call Apple Care and request that your warranty service call be escalated to Customer Relations. Politely, but firmly, explain the situation and stand your ground that the solution to make you a happy customer is to have the Mac replaced. Don't make threats, mention lawyers or claim that Apple discriminates against Indians. If you do, you will have lost your case and Apple will then work with you from a distance and follow it policies and procedures to the letter, regardless of whether it makes you happy.

  • IMac G5 or Powermac for Graphic Design Industry?

I was wondering what kind of computer does the Graphic Design industry uses? iMac G5 or the Powermac? What do you recommend?
I heard that the Powermac is usually used by professionals. Is this true? How does the iMac G5 compare to it?
    imac G5   Mac OS X (10.4)

    Hi Angela...
As a design professional I can definitively say if you're working in the design industry with profesional applications such as Quark, Photoshop, etc., your only choice is a PowerMac. iMac's are consumer grade computers, and while quite elegant, and powerful, they are not up to the rigors needed in a professional work situation. Any of the newer PowerMacs will work, but IMO it's always best to buy the best you can afford. If you're working for a company, they should be able to buy top end for you, as it's a depreciable item that can be written-off as a company expense. Anything less and you're literally wasting your time, and the companies time, waiting for the computer to re-draw your screen or finish the task.
    good luck...

  • Connecting iMac 24 to PowerMac G5

I would like to know the best way to connect an iMac 24, model A1225 to a PowerMac G5 in order to share files between these two computers. As simple as this seems, my searches turn up very little that I can trust.
The OS on the G5 is OSX 10.3.9 which allows me to run Classic there.

If they are both connected to your internet connection, then you should just need to turn on sharing in the System Preferences.
In the Finder go to Help menu/Mac Help/Index/S/Sharing files and you can read all about configuring your Macs for file sharing.

  • IMac G5 vs PowerMac G5

I currently own a dual 2GHz PowerMac G5. I'm still paying it off (darn you MBNA) and am thinking of selling it and switching to a iMac G5. I would be using the computer for every day activities as well as editing with Final Cut Pro 4.5 HD.
Will there a noticeable speed difference? It is my understanding that Final Cut Pro 4.5 HD doesn't utilize both CPU's so I don't see how there will be much of a speed difference.
The main reason I'm interested in the switch is to reduce my debt.
Thoughts? (regarding the two computers, not my debt.

    Hello Marc Buhmann,
Your decision should clearly depend on how much use your getting out of FCP-HD and what type of production your involved in. Home movie(s), either Mac.
If your producing long DV, rendering etc will be signifgantly longer and may slow the single G5 to a slow crawl.
It also depends on the amount of RAM your system can use and if your using external HD's for the process.
But to make this simple, Glorfindeal was spot on.

  • First Mac: iMac G5 or Powermac G5

Hi, After using windows for 5 years I have decided to purchase my first mac, as it is my first, and I dont know much about them I wanted a reletively cheap option and the iMac G5 and the Powermac G5 caught my eye, after buying these I am getting a Power Book G4 (Titanium.) I'm also going to upgrade the ram on the machine that I get so what one is the easiest to do the upgrade also can you upgrade the graphics/video card on them?
No video upgrades on the iMac, RAM upgrades are easy on both, but Mac compatible RAM is essential.

  • Will new iMac beat old Powermac???

I've had my powermac dual G5 1.8 since 2004 and am thinking of uprading to a new high-end intel-iMac with leopard.
My main reasons are that my Mac has become really sluggish of late especially with multiple application open and viewing video.
I mostly use my computer for photoshop, watching video and the internet.
I have 512MB ram and a dual 1.8GHZ CPU, the new imac i''m interested in is a 2.8GHZ dual core processor and 2GB RAM, will this give me enough power and performance to not have the beachball all the time when running multiple applications or is a powermac, even an old one, still a faster machine that an iMac??
also does dual 1.8ghz mean two 1.8ghx chips or 1.8 in total, because it it's 2 1.8ghz chips then wouldn't that still be faster (combined) than the new iMac, i'm confused???

That's the problem. That is not much over the minimum RAM required for Tiger. You should have at least 2GB RAM. Also, be sure there is plenty of space on your hard drive.

You have two 1.8 GHz processors. The Intel iMac also has two processors, but they are on one chip. Each processor is 2.0 to 2.8 GHz, depending on which model iMac you get. You should get it with 4 GB RAM.

  • Switching from iMac G4 to Powermac G4

    Hi all,
I am switching my main machine from an iMac G4 1.25 to a Powermac G4 MDD Dual 1.25. I wanted to get some advice on the fastest and most effective way to switch. I was thinking either to take out the hard drive in the iMac and install it into the PM G4 or maybe use Carbon Copy Cloner to copy the iMac hard drive to the PM G4 hard drive. If I do it any of those ways, will the Powermac boot up OK, being that the drive is from the iMac? I want to keep all of my programs and settings intact and avoid having to reinstall anything. Thanks for any advice you have.

  • Connecting iMac G5 to PowerMac G4?

Hi if anyone can help on this, it would be great.
I have a intel based version iMac g5 and just bought a G4 (not sure why, ebay etc)
I know you can use the PowerMac G5 as a node so you can use its processor power for certain tasks (eg music production in Logic).
But can you do it with the G4 PowerMac? if so how?
    kind regards.
    wilson

No offense taken. I was too sleepy when I wrote that.
There's a Cat5e outlet in my living room. AppleTV doesn't recognize it. It's as if it's not plugged in at all, and defaults to wireless connection telling me I need to insert an ethernet cable to use ethernet. Until 2 weeks ago it worked fine. I was on vacation and so did nothing myself to alter the setup. There were no power outages either.
I tested the patch cable (ATV-wall) and then the patch cable by the router (patch bay-gigabit switch) by replacing them one at at time. No change.
I tested the setup as a whole by connecting an iBook and an iMac G4, both with Airport switched off. The iBook works fine. The iMac does not. (In my first post I said that fast ethernet worked but gigabit ethernet did not, but I've just realized that the iMac is not gigabit ethernet.)
The gigabit switch by the router has link indicator LEDs: 1 light for a fast ethernet connection, 2 for gigabit ethernet, 0 for no connection. With the iBook there's 1 LED, with the ATV there is 0.
Finally, the ATV itself is definitely not broken. I verified this by connecting it to my bedroom TV with another outlet. It worked fine.
I suppose there's a problem with the network cables or hardware, but these odd inconsistencies are confusing me and I don't know where or how to start troubleshooting.
