Teranex Mini, the economical choice in front of FCP?

My friend, the search function, did not have anything bad to say about Teranex. One poster said it was the best. In search of more information, I have gone to a review in Videography, suggested by Teranex. The reviewer has consulted for Teranex. Despite these cautions I raise the proposition that the Teranex Mini could save me money. What do you think?
I have legacy VHS material, various stills including half-toned scanned stuff, and three cheap consumer camcorders, doing card, DVD and DV tape. I am reluctant to upgrade to an HD camera given their myriad of formats, the rapid change and their cost. It seems that the Teranex Mini might let me hang in with my "junk" until Red arrives and settles down to save the day. The top cost I have seen is $7,000 for a Mini ($3,000 minimum price). Patrick guessed he might spend $7,000 for his fully-featured Mac Pro, so I guess $7,000 for a Teranex Mini is not out of the ball park. I was yearning for a Mac Pro + but now it seems more economical to yearn for a Teranex Mini.
You might want to look at the full review, but I have included a couple of excerpts. I did not include the part about a time lag problem, but they say that FCP will let you offset and get Teranex in sync with FCP.
The review excerpts follow:
"For the foreseeable future, video professionals
are going to live in a multiformat
and multi-standard world.
Although you may be upgrading to
high definition, it’s unlikely that you
will be working with HD footage exclusively.
Most producers will have a continuing
need to incorporate legacy
standard-definition footage from past
productions or stock image libraries.
For this reason, high-quality format
conversion equipment is an essential
ingredient at facilities."
and
"most converters offer
little to improve the image or even to
keep it intact during scaling. If you are
supplying HD programming that
includes a large amount of upconverted
SD material, a dedicated format converter
could mean the difference
between a program that passes a QC
check and one that doesn’t."

Shane,
The message I got from your post may not be the one you intended, but it is a good message and I again thank you.
You wrote, "Or rent cameras and avoid buying like most productions do."
Being as I am trying to find a way to live with my junk cameras until RED or equivalent is available and stable, I translated your message as:
"Or rent Teranex Mini and avoid buying like most productions do."
The net says I can rent it for $275 per day plus insurance and shipping.
I will not need it for a while, so that leaves me time to learn how to use it and develop a good work flow to FCP, so that I can get Teranex in and out quickly.
Regarding other points you made, I will probably have VHS only this one time and I think I can frame it to the audience as real, live, authentic action footage from 13 years ago, so that they will put up with it.
As to the footage from my DV consumer cameras, it will not be perfect but Teranex says it will pass the quality check. The rental will reveal whether that is true.
And, about RED, if Graeme Nattress is on the development team, and I think he is, then I am willing to bet on RED. I do not think he would associate himself with anything that will not be a success. Of course, it might slip schedule a teeney, but I trying to prepare to wait it out happily with Teranex.
Again, I appreciate your posting last night.

  • Hello Everyone, I want to purchase an ipad ,please suggest whether ipad mini is the right choice to go for or not?

I am planning to buy an ipad mini, please suggest me whether its the right choice to go for or not ?
    Hows the display?

The Ipad 4 has a stronger processor, and better graphics and display than the Mini. but they can basically do the same things.
Obviously one is smaller than  the other, but at the end, the games will still play on both, and you may not even notice a difference.

Apple's download AND activation servers are being stressed today with all the downloads/activations. It might be best to wait and try later.

  • Big Mini Trouble with DVD and Front Row

    Set-Up
I am trying to use my mac mini as a media centre connected to a 42" sharp aquos 1080HD, for sound i use a 5.1 bose speaker set-up, which is irrelevant to my problem, but the mac interfaces with a yamaha rxv661B 7.1 channel digital home theatre receiver, via DVI to HDMI and sound through head phone to RCA set-up that will soon be upgraded to optical. All connected to the appropriate DVD channels on the recevier, video goes to the TV via HDMI. My set-up has no DVD player other than the super drive on the mac mini, the only other input is a Bell ExpressVu 9200 PVR.
    My Problem
    1. Playing DVDs the brightness on the picture fluctuates in a very regular wave like pulse. What am I doing wrong?
    2. Front Row Crashes the computer whenever I try to access any of the movie files. The files play fine when accessed directly or through itunes but crash the system in front row. DVDs play, and the online movie clips play, and music and picture content are no problem.
Any help would be much appreciated
As an aside does anyone know if youtube will be available to non Apple-TV front row users, as well?

Everything is plugged into a three pronged plug using a relatively sophisticated surge protecting power bar, but you may be on to something, the power bar has a light to indicate if it is properly grounded and that has not lit up since its been in use, perhaps the outlet isn't properly grounded, I live in a recently renovated 100yr old home.
As for the files they are a mixture of mpg, mov and a number of m4v (that might be my postal not a file format) I mean the ipod format, a lot of the video files I produce I put directly into the ipod ready format.

When I tweet from my notification center on my iPad mini, the link to the content I'm tweeting about is not included. It only includes the title of the tweet. How do I fix that? Thanks.

The choice should appear as two tabs at the top - imap & pop.
    Make sure you're choosing 'Other'.

  • RMI: Is it the right choice?

I want to make an application that connects to 1 other peer. So I'd run the application and if I type in the IP of someone else running the same application, we can connect to each other and do stuff like chatting. Is RMI the right choice to make this happen?

I would use Apache MINA library. Its easy to use, fast, more firewall friendly than RMI, more language-independent transmission format. http://mina.apache.org/
Really. Where does it say that MINA knows a firewall from third base?
Mina is a Java NIO library that just does TCP and UDP communications and intra-process pipes.
It's not a competitor for RMI in any sense that I'm aware of.

  • JSF - Tomcat security...what is the best choice for a high activity site

JSF - Tomcat security...what is the best choice for a high activity site
The JDBCRealm is not multithreaded so what are options for high activity site??
I would like to have Apache as front end doing load balancing, Tomcat as server and JSF.
    All ideals and suggestions please.
    Thanks

    One more question.
    Since Tomcat has this setup.
    create table users (
user_name varchar(15) not null primary key,
    user_pass varchar(15) not null
    create table user_roles (
    user_name varchar(15) not null,
    role_name varchar(15) not null,
    primary key (user_name, role_name)
It seems like a huge pain to keep a user with every role. What happens when you have 500,000 users???
Also, the authentications on every page....would it be easier to login once and setup a session bean check that on with the page header ??
    Thanks

  • Digital Video Interfaces??  Is AJA the best choice for the money??

I am using FCP HD, and have always worked with Mini DV. But we just purchased a Sony PVW-2600 Beta deck, and I believe that I'm needing to purchase some kind of interface.
Is AJA the only or best choice for me? Can you give me some suggestions?
    Thanks so much!
    Bryce

It's not the only choice, as Blackmagic/Decklink make good cards too, as do Aurora. But whether it's the best choice is another matter. There's lots of different decisions to make - HD compatibility? Effects acceleration? Monitoring outputs? Rack mountability?
    Others will respond.

    Platform

As you can see from the chart above, the BlackBerry Z10 and BlackBerry Q10 are almost identical when it comes to specs. wever, I found the Q10 offered a better quality screen that also provided more impressive viewing angles. This is due to the Z10’s lesser quality LCD Disply that only pumps out a resolution of 1280 x 768 pixels, while the Q10’s S-AMOLED 720p screen flourishes above.
In the end, I came to the conclusion that the handset that appeals to the larger majority of smartphone customers is the Z10. This device represents what people are accustomed to in the year 2013, while the Q10 appeals to a shrinking customer base that prefers a physical keypad over a virtual one.

Q10 vs. Z10 is a highly personal choice. As you pointed out in the specs the basic internals are identical. It comes down to full touch screen vs. physical keyboard. For a traditionalist like me it's the Q10 FTW. But then I cut my teeth on BlackBerrys all the way back to the 7230 model. BlackBerry's outstanding physical keyboard is ingrained in my DNA by now. I've also used Android phones and an iPhone so I'm no stranger to the full touch screen, and I even got used to the on-screen keyboards with that form factor. But the Q10 for me has just enough of a screen that I don't miss the full size screen too much, and it's more than compensated for by the keyboard I love so much.
The best choice is to have them both! But if you must pick one, best to go to a store and try them both out for as long as the sales reps will tolerate you.

    Hi,
Kindly create a new layer, via the Layers panel:
Then, right click on the navigation bar, and choose Move to Layer > Layer 2
Ensure that Layer 2 is on top of the other layers.
    Hope it helps,

The only response is when I connect the USB and press the power button or front button the Battery appears with red line on left and lightning symbol below. There is no other response at all no matter what I do, including holding both buttons down for extended period.  My other kid got one and it works perfectly.....I have interchanged usb cables ports etc. but still no response....I would really appreciate any help.

    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    -  Make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since you have a hardware problem with the iPod. This is because as you said the same cable works with another iPod.

I tried to install SAP GUI 7.20 on Windows Vista X64.  And I got this error message:
The installation of SAP Front-End components failed with 95 errors.
This 7.20 version used to run on this operating system fine. I reinstalled the OS, and now I got this.

    Hi,
I suppose you reinstalled the same OS.
Did you install the JSDK (java) afterwards. As you must be aware Java is a pre-requisite for the SAP Frontend.
Also make sure you have set the environment variables after installing java.
Further documentation, the SAP installation manual can be found in the u201CDOCUu201D folder of the installation software.

  • MacBook Air: the right choice for a College student?

    Hello there!
I'm buying my first Apple laptop in the near future (probably tomorrow as I like to buy things in store and not online and I live roughly 75 miles from the nearest Apple store and am heading to the mall it's located in on a shopping trip tomorrow, anyway). I currently have a 3 year old Dell that has no battery life at all (it has to be connected 24/7 to an outlet, the mouse clicky button doesn't work, it overheats, and the hardrive has already been replaced not once but twice) and I don't use it for anything other than school, facebook, watching movies via netflix, skype, and listening to music. I've been doing months of research and all has lead me to Apple.
I want this laptop to last me until I am done with my masters and into the first couple years of my teaching career, so roughly 6 years. Is that too much to ask from this machiene?
I'm inlove with the thiness, lightness and portability of the Macbook Air. I use my laptop a lot, this semester I'm finishing out my core requirements and a lot of them are "bullsh*t" classes where I can do nothing and get an A. I would therefore have my laptop with me, I also bring it to friends rooms to study and relax. My goal is to have a laptop that I can write papers, continue to watch movies and use it as a basic machiene. I barely use a cd drive (my aunt is willing to by the drive that goes with the Air) but when I do it's just for burning music to my itunes. I want a machiene that will have a long lasting battery life - that's my biggest concern.
My roomate has a Macbook Pro and keeps telling me that I'd hate the Air.
I've read that people do not like it as it does not have a backlit keyboard. That doesn't bother me as my keyboard currently isn't backlit.
I've also read that people continue to prefer the pro over the air but I am not a fan of the pro just as it is so much bigger.
I barely ever use my USB drive, when I do its to transfer over files that need to be printed.  So having only two of them means nothing to me really.
I'm just looking for assistance to help me make my decision. I feel like I already made it but I just want to be sure that I'm making the right choice.
    My personal pros/cons:
Pros: lightweight, small, highly portable, amazing webcam, excellent battery life
Cons: it's so thin I feel like I would snap it in two pieces
    Thank you so much!

    Listen to us, Lovekate!
We know you're eager, but hold out just a little longer--maybe a week or two--for the update! Please! It's the smart thing to do because it may give you options you can use. Kate! Look away from the machines. This way! This way! You can do this. If you don't, you'll feel buyers remorse and that's not good. Hold off. You'll be happy you did...also, don't forget, when you do buy, you get a student discount.
From what you say, you've found the computer you love and don't need any encouragement from us. But here's advise for what you can say to your friends:
    (1) To those telling you to get the Pro--you are not going to buy more than you need. With Clouds, and online mail and external hard drives, there is no need for you to haul around anything made heavy with a huge hard drive you'll never fill up. And the Air can do anything a Pro can do excepting update to a bigger hard drive (which you've just explained you don't need--like you don't need the CD drive). And the 13" actually has a longer lasting battery than the 13" Pro.
    (2) Why should you get a computer you don't love, and therefore is no fun or joy for you to work on, rather than a computer you love, which you will love working on? Apple rule, "Always get what you love."
    (3) To your Dad, you are buying something very like a car. And like a car, if you buy one cheap, it will cost you if it breaks down, needs repairs, or needs replacing. Needing to buy a new cheap car every other year can add up to the same cost as buying a new car that will last you ten years. You are buying a computer that will last you, be reliable, and not need repairs thus interfering with your productivity (by the way, get Apple Care--adds two more years warranty for a total of 3 years--trust us on this. If you can't afford it now, you can hold off buying it till the end of the first year, but do get it!). Apple computers also have good resale value.
In short, as much as it costs, it will be worth it.
Hope that helps, and remember...hold out! or if you've already bought it--you have 14 days to return it.
