Terminal Adapter (Telnet) to Console Port Server?

Has anyone been able to connect to a device on a console port server?
Problem: the telnet session needs a crlf to be sent upon initial connect in order to trigger the device to send its login prompt. CPO cannot see the prompt and therefore times-out waiting for it to arrive
Thanks
Mike

We've found quite a few flavours of behaviour in ConsolePort servers. Some require crlf, others don't, while some require a password before it gives you access to the requested device. The CNOAS team has just produced a console port server workflow that presents a real time web page showing activity across ports, auto-recognition of devices etc., and allows user-written CPO provisioners and configurators to be launched to service the device. Please drop me an email for more info

  • Telnet via console port

    Hi
Is it possible to telnet via console port to a server without any additional hardware? I understand that an ip needs to be configured but i am not sure how it is to be done.
    any help given is appreciated..
    thanks

Yes , you can but your server must see server that you want to access first
first you can ping to server that you want to access . if you can't see it ,that is impossible to access it .

  • Server 2012 R2 Telnet on any port

Let me first get the infrastructure out of the way.
We have one 2012 R2 Server acting as the Hyper V host for 2 servers. The two virtual machines is one 2012 R2 Server and one 2003 SBS server that we did a P2V on.
Now here lies the problem, a third party application was installed by it's vendor and it needs to connect to port 7172 on their IP to activate the licence. I have opened the port on the firewall and I am able to telnet to that port from the 2003 VM, however
I cannot Telnet or connect to their IP on port 7172 from either the 2012 R2 VM or the 2012 R2 Hyper V host.
I thought it was something to do with Hyper V, but since it does not work from the Hyper V host, I suspect Hyper V has nothing to do with this but rather Server 2012.
Telnet client feature is installed on both 2012 machines.
    Any thoughts welcome!

hi Sakkie, have you check whether the port is listening?
    go to command prompt type:
      netstat -ano | find "7172"
if the results shows established or listening then it should be good.
if you are not able to telnet to that port, i suspect that vendor's application has been set to reject telnet connection.
Some application rejects telnet connection for security reasons.
Every second counts..make use of it. Disclaimer: This posting is provided AS IS with no warranties or guarantees and confers no rights.

  • Help on accessing 2900 console port

I dug up an old 2900 and forgot how to link my pc to the console port to initiate an ip address, etc. Does anyone remember?

    Hello,
basically, you just need a rolled cable (pins 1 thru 8 reversed) with a DB-9 adapter, in order to connect the cable to the COM port of your PC. You can use Hyperterminal with the following settings for the COM port:
    - 9600 baud
    - 8 data bits
    - 1 stop bits
    - no parity
    Check the following document:
Connecting a Terminal to the Console Port on Catalyst Switches
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/switches/ps700/products_tech_note09186a008010ff7a.shtml
Also, you might want to install a newer version of Hyperterminal:
    HyperTerminal Private Edition version 6.3

  • Console port not working.

    Hello!
I would like to know if there's some situation what a console port could be disabled, or something like that.
I'm trying to configure a Catalyst 2960 Series PoE-24 by the console port using the hyperterminal, but it's not working. I verified the cable and the COM port, and everything works with another switch (same model).
Does anyone knows what could possibly be happening?

My colleagues have focused on the usual issues that cause the console to not work - possible issues with the terminal emulator or more likely is mis match in the speed setting of the console. If you work through those possibilities and the console still does not work then I have another possibility to suggest. Perhaps someone configure the command no exec under line con 0. This would cause the console to not work. It would display messages during bootup but would not accept any commands.
Does the switch seem to boot up normally? Was it configured with an IP address that you could potentially telnet to? This would give you a way to investigate the configuration.
If my suggestion is correct and the issue is that no exec was configured then you should be able to use password recovery to bypass the existing config and this could restore normal operation for the switch.

  • No AAA authentication on Console port

I would like to configure our routers to use our ACS server for authentication and enable authorization for all telnet access but not use the ACS when connected to the console port. I was able to get the router configured so that console username and password access was local. However, when I attempt to go into enable mode from the console port the router still goes after the ACS server for the enble password. How do I get around this?

--begin ciscomoderator note-- The following post has been edited to remove potentially confidential information. Please refrain from posting confidential information on the site to reduce security risks to your network. -- end ciscomoderator note --
Thanks this does help. However, I'm still running into and issue. My ultimate goal is to have all users authenticate and get enable access through our ACS server based on there corporate NT domain username/pw. If the ACS server is unavailable go to the local data base. This is working fine for user telneting to the routers and also works for the console port (if the ACS server is unavailable).
However, with the ACS server active, when I console in I authenticate based on the local database admin/cisco. But when I attempt to go into enable mode the router still goes after the ACS server for a password. I would like console port users to always use the local enable password.
I'm just trying to protect myself from a possible misbehaved ACS server.

  • Conect two routers over console port

    Hi Guys ,
How conect two routers or firewall over console port for manager ?
    Thanks
    Jorge

    Hi Jorge,
I do not believe that you can connect to devices over console ports.
I have in the past connected from an aux port on a router to a console port on a switch using one of the old RJ45-RJ45 rollover cables Cisco used to ship with DB9-RJ45 adapters before they starting shipping DB9-RJ45 console cables.
You should be able to use the configuration in the document at the link below as a starting point.
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/tech/tk801/tk36/technologies_configuration_example09186a008014f8e7.shtml
This document is for a terminal server with 16 async ports. The config below should be ok for an aux port.
    ip host switch 2001 172.21.1.1
    interface Loopback1
    ip address 172.21.1.1 255.0.0.0
    line aux 0
    session-timeout 20
    no exec
    exec-timeout 0 0

  • WSRM Adapter replaced with soap in PO7.4. Getting error "Response message contains an errorXIAdapter/HTTP/ADAPTER.HTTP_EXCEPTION - HTTP 500 Internal Server Error"

    Hello All,
We have scenario proxy->pi->webservice. In older versions of PI system they used wsrm adapter at receiver side and it's working fine.
Receiver interface is asynchronous. So no response structute is present and receiver service is business component(since receiver is a third party).
During migration, we have replaced the receiver adapter with SOAP adapter and used message protocol as SOAP 1.1 but the message is failing and in communication channel it is showing error "Response message contains an errorXIAdapter/HTTP/ADAPTER.HTTP_EXCEPTION - HTTP 500 Internal Server Error". In this case the receiver interface is stateless xi 3.0 compatible(re using the old), after changing it to just stateless also issue persists.
In target url field if i prefix the url with "http" then above mentioned error is occurring otherwise if i use the hostname:port/path.. then it is giving error
"soap: Call failed: com.sap.aii.af.sdk.xi.srt.BubbleException: Unsupported protocol". So maintaing the url as http://hostname:port/pat.....
As in old channel wsrm channel there is no userid and password, i haven't given any userid/pwd in receiver channel.
used the bean sap.com/com.sap.aii.af.soapadapter/XISOAPAdapterBean with  parameters
    Module Key  =  soap
      Parameter Name  =  noSOAPMakeSysErrFromResponseFault
    Parameter Value  =  false
    and
    xmbws.No SOAPIgnoreStatus = true
    but not successful.
Please help me. I got stcuk here.

    Hello Jannus,
The connectivity is working fine. Network team has confirmed it. I doubt that any strucutre(header) difference might be present in message when sending with wsrm adapter compared to sending with soap adapter.
Please let me know the exact difference between soap and wsrm functionality in receiving end.
By considering the structure issue, i have checked the "do not use soap envelope" check box, then i got error "Response message contains an errorXIAdapter/HTTP/ADAPTER.HTTP_EXCEPTION - HTTP 415 Unsupported Media Type"
Then i used message transform bean, but not successful.
    Regards,
    Ch.Venkat.

    Hi Yaeli1,
From the error message above,  please check the permission for file writing , it seems that this issue is related to access permission.

  • Is It possible connect two router**from console port to console port

    Hi,
I need this for doing reverse telnet.
    Thanks very much

    No
you can connect router 1's aux port to router 2's console port.
    line aux 0
    password blablabla
    login
    modem InOut
    transport input all
find the aux port's line number which depends on the router model then telnet to a live ip on router 1 on that port.
    Worc_3640#sh line
Tty Typ Tx/Rx A Modem Roty AccO AccI Uses Noise Overruns Int
    0 CTY - - - - - 0 0 0/0 -
    129 AUX 9600/9600 - inout - - - 0 0 0/0 -
    * 130 VTY - - - - - 75 0 0/0 -
so say 10.1.1.100 2129 if 10.1.1.100 is on that box.
    should get you going..

  • OOB management with console port

I would like to do the setup according to the doc - http://www.cisco.com/en/US/tech/tk801/tk36/technologies_tech_note09186a00800941c9.shtml
The only disadvantage I see is from the following excerpt from the article -
"Warning: Unprotected modems should not be connected to the console port. The console ports do not log users off when the carrier detect is lost, which can leave a security hole. To avoid this, use a secure modem, or connect via the AUX port. For more information on the advantages and disadvantages of connecting a modem to the Console port, refer to the Modem-Router Connection Guide."
I know I could set an exec-timeout of 1 minute but that would still leave a small window of time for security breaches if the line drops.
Could someone tell me a particular modem that has a password built into it to overcome this problem? What is the best security practice in this case?
I have setup modems before on the aux port, but you cannot access the router after reload if it boots into ROMMON mode for some reason.
    Thanks,
    RJ

    Hi,
As a workaround you can try using an old junk PC with 2 serial ports, install Linux on that PC, connect via terminal session using the modem attached to serial COM1 (modem in autoanswer mode just like you're doing now), login with username/password on the Linux machine and then use a terminal emulation software like Minicom to open serial port COM2 to get the IOS prompt from the router.
Maybe this option is too much hassle for your application, but it won´t cost you a dime and is not really that difficult.
    Regards.

  • Noise on console port

I noticed a number of failed console port logins in our tacacs logs from a couple of remote routers. In both cases the usernames are gibberish - random characters in one case; access-list logs in the other.
logging in to these 2 routers (both 870s)I can see a lot of noise on the console ports. Anyone know what could be causing this?

  • Nexus 7000 console port doesnt work both sup's

I have an odd issue... I have one nexus 7k where I cannot get signal from either sup console port... I have another 7k totally fine.. I can't see anything different in the config and I don't have them broken up into vdc's either they are just 1 vdc so it's pretty simple.  it's almost like the console is shut off and the odd thing is its both cards.  Any help appreciated
    anything I can check?

Are you using any type of telnet connection? I see that you say that the configs aren't different. That informs me that you were able to see the CLI at one time. Are you able to see the CLI when connecting directly to the console port from your PC?
It could also be the baud rate of the telnet program you are using. Make sure you are using the default baud rate for the Sup model you are using.
Also are you using the same Sup's? Once you push in the sups, one will be the active and one will be standby. If you are connected to the standby sup you will not be able to type any commands, but it will inform you in the hostname that it is the standby sup.
    Hope this helps.
