Terminal.app keeps creating copies of my settings files

Under Leopard, I like to conveniently open Terminal windows onto remote systems. I've created several settings files in Terminal, one for each remote system that I want to access. To open window, I right-click on the Terminal icon in the Dock, expand the "New Window" menu item, and select the remote system I want to connect to. This has worked very well for me for years.
Today I tried to improve the process. I created a shell script for each remote system. Each script contains a single line like
open /Library/Application Support/Terminal/system-abc.terminal
I created the system-abc.terminal files by doing Terminal->Shell->Export Settings... When I execute the shell script, a new Terminal window pops up as expected. This is great - now I can execute the shell script from Quicksilver, so I have a way to open Terminals with a few keystrokes.
This works quite well, but it has an unfortunate side effect. Whenever I execute the shell script, a new menu item gets added to Terminal's list of remote systems. In other words, after executing the above script once and then right-click on the Terminal icon in the dock, and expand "New Window", I find a brand-new thing in the list. The new thing is called "system-abc 1". If I run the script again, I find another new thing named "system-abc 2". Etc.
So it works, but it clutters up the list of remote systems. Is this a bug in Terminal?

  • Mail.app keeps multiple copies in Draft and does not delete after send

I have just recently noticed this problem and it seems to be getting worse. I am on Mountain Lion 10.8.1 and I'm using an exchange server (2010) email account.
I do not recall this problem being this bad in Lion.  When I save a draft go back into it, make changes, it saves a bunch of copies. I just deleted about 30 emails from one draft.
The 2nd issue is it does not leave the draft folder when I actually send, so it appears I never sent it, but I did. This is extremely frustrating and not efficient.  I use Mail for my business email and all my personal emails as well, but mainly business.
I don't like Outlook for Mac (too slow), and I really don't like Mail for Mac either since my contacts and calendar are all in different apps.
Does anyone have a solution for the DRAFTS folder issues and/or can you recommend another e-mail client that is better. Outlook 2011 for Mac is just too slow, the beach ball is always showing when I try to use Outlook.  And I really prefer not to have to go back to Windows Outlook through Parallels. I can manage with Mail.app if I could resolve this Drafts issue.  I save emails all day long so to double check each one to see if I actually sent it is too time consuming.
I'm running on a Macbook Pro, 2.2 Ghz Intel Core i7, 8 GB memory.
    Thanks in advance.

I am too having the same issue. While working on Snow Leopard Mail app was working fine, bue te moment I upgraded to Lion OS, I began to see some mail laying around my draft folder. I thought they never left, but make a few call I found everyone was receiving my email, but for some strage reason, a copy stayed in drafts. I submitted this bug to Apple, and they actually told me they were aware of this issue and they were working on that. A year went by and we received Mountalion OS, and my iMac with Lion OS still has this issue. They never solved that. Now I am with this new iMac at home and and I am fighting myself not to use Mail app because, as far as I can see, the problme persist on Mountain Lion. So now, at this very moment I will give a try to PostBox (http://www.postbox-inc.com/)
My bussiness mail is mounted on Google apps, so I hope this works

  • Excel keeps creating copies when I try to open a file

This is new, we cliked on the file to open it and it opens a copy that it just created. If we close it, we can then open the copy without it creating another copy.
We also tried to right click on the file's name and then click on open and it still creates a copy that it opens.

  • App keeps quitting when I move my files.

I have several folders in my Adobe Reader app to keep files organised. After the latest update, whenever I try to move a new file into an existing folder, the app suddenly quits without any error message. May Adobe please fix this as soon as possible? My reader is now becoming more and more messy.

    Hi,
Sorry for the inconvinience caused due to move bug. We have fixed the issue and are waiting for apple to review/approve it.
    Thanks for your patience.

  • Numbers App keeps crashing when opening Numbers '09 files

    Hi
I am experiencing an intermittent but frustrating issue with Numbers for iPad. It is crashing fairly regularly when I attempt to open Numbers '09 documents. Initially I thought this was to do with file size (i.e. too large), but I just tried opening a document with just two sheets, with a filesize of 150KB and it crashed again.
When I amend a Numbers '09 document in some way it sometimes then opens, but if a particular version of a document won't open the first time then it won't open anytime.
Is anyone else experiencing such issues, and is there anything else I can try?
    Thanks
    Nick

If you like, explain what data you are entering into the cell, and I'll give it a go. Ideally you could post your file somewhere and I'd use it. If it does or does not crash over here then at least that is more information to go on.

  • Can't open .term Terminal.app files from command line

Howdy. I use Terminal.app constantly for ssh'ing into numerous remote machines. On my G4 Powerbook I have simply created .term files with customized colors, titlebars, and an appropriate ssh execution string for each machine/userid combination, which I am able to open with "open ~/bin/foo.term". Life is no longer so joyously simple on my new Intel iMac. I create a .term file (via Cmd-s while in a terminal window), but the above command to open foo.term now simply doesn't work on my iMac once a single terminal window has been opened (even after it's been closed) -- I can start one such file only from the finder or via Launchbar or Quicksilver. The only way I can use my .term files is by switching to Terminal and selecting File...Open and clicking on the .term file -- which, being a command line (and Launchbar) junkie, I hate, of course. Applescripts don't work either.
I would be forever grateful if someone could tell me how to fix this problem!

    I cannot do it either.
Ah, interesting -- thanks for the input. I had thought the problem might have something to do with the fact that I was using an Intel iMac, but you are using a PPC iBook. The problem isn't with 10.4.6 either, as that is what I'm running on my G4 Powerbook, and the .term files work as expected on that machine.
Initially I thought it was a
problem with permissions, i.e the term file hadn't
the execute bit set (which it did not). Setting the x
bit though did not help at all.
Right, the .term files aren't executable.
    A work around was to
save the command(s) into a plain text document in
text edit (not rtf) as a .command file (no txt
extension in this case) and set its execute bit in
    terminal (sudo chmod u+x ...).
I don't quite understand the workaround -- what command(s) exactly did you put into the .command file? Could you paste the contents of such a file here?
I have not dealt with term files extensively but I
noticed that .term files are xml ones. Could anyone
shed some light in possible changes in the way
    terminal handles them?
Since the .term files work as desired on my Powerbook, it now doesn't appear that Terminal.app has changed its processing of the files. Something else is going on here.

  • Failed to import publish settings file in Azure Toolkit for Eclipse with Java downloaded from Azure Management Portal

I tried to deploy the Hello World JSP application to Azure from Eclipse following the instructions at http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/azure/hh690944%28VS.103%29.aspx. Got the following error when trying to import Publish Settings file downloaded from Azure
    Management portal:
Importing MyMSDN.publishsettings file failed. Reason: failed to parse file. Ensure publish settings version is 1.0.
Could someone help me solve this problem? Thanks.

    Hi huihuang,
It seems there is some issue with your publishsettings file, could you open this file and copy the content here? Or please have a look at this article:
http://gauravmantri.com/2012/09/14/about-windows-azure-publish-settings-file-and-how-to-create-your-own-publish-settings-file/ for more information about it.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your documents or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this behavior; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Please take this step regardless of the results of Step 1.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

  • How to permanently save the color settings in terminal.app

    Hi,
I have configured the "ls" command in the terminal.app to give colored outputs. However, I realised that for some reason the color-set used is designed for a light-colored background. When I use "white on black", the default blue color of the directories is almost invisible.
Of course, I can change this to another color, but this problem is true for all "blue" fonts, so for example, the default color for comments in vim is also blue and thus unreadable with black background.
This is not a problem when I use the xterm in X11. The color set there is much lighter and is perfect for a black backgound.
By drag-and-drop method (drag the chosen color on top of the directory texts in terminal), I am able to alter the blue color to a much lighter version. This apparently changes all fonts that is blue (this includes for example vim comments), and is exactly what I wanted. But I cannot figure out a way to save this as default. Clicking "Save setting as default" button in the inspector does nothing, the new terminal window still gives you this dark blue.
Anyone know how do I do this?
    Cheers,
    Lianheng

    Hi Nils,
    Thanks for the replies.
I think I see what the problem is: basically the colors in the terminal are darker than that of the xterm in X11. This can be clearly seen from the vim. May be this is to do with the fact that apple terminal.app has a "better" color support?
I quite like the default LSCOLORS settings, which is:
    LSCOLORS=exfxcxdxcxegedabagacad
The color settings in X11 is just perfect for me at the moment. It would be so much nicer if I can make the color scheme in terminal.app look like that of the X11. If say, I change LSCOLORS to
    LSCOLORS=gxfxcxdxcxegedabagacad
and change the color schemes in vim to a lighter theme, but this will effect the colors in X11 too, which is perfect now. Cyan will look too light in X11.
At the first I thought by drag and dropping the colors into terminal it will alter its color map. So my question was actually how can one (if it is possible) change the color map of the terminal.app, so that it inteprets the ANSI "blue" slightly differently.
By the way, the way that you can see all colors in vim is really neat! Thanks for that tip.

    Hi Marius,
If you are having an issue with being unable to send from the Messages application on your iPod touch, I would suggest that you troubleshoot using the steps in this article -
If you can't send or receive messages on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.

Mail App keeps freezing and crashing after yosemite upgrade.  Cant create new emails.  Is there a fix to these issues?

    Hi,
When I read these Threads in Yosemite I am filtered to show only the one listing Messages (the App) as the App involved.
This form of tagging a Thread no longer shows up in the current software used to run the Discussions.
Did you use the Mail and the Messages tags ?
It is difficult as many Mail help items refer to emails and "messages".
With me posting to the thread it should raise it to near the top again and maybe someone who knows about Mail will post.

  • Mail keeps creating inboxes

I use Apple Mail on both my MacBook and iPhone to sync with my IMAP account and have recently acquired a problem:
Although I don't use the To Do function in Mail, Mail has been creating an Apple Mail To Do folder in my iPhone/MacBook folder list. At first this was at the top level of the hierarchy, same as my other mail folders. I deleted it when first noticed and have attempted to delete again since (perhaps foolishly), and now Mail keeps creating new copies of the "Apple Mail To Do" folder, only… each time it is nested inside two, three, four, five(!) "Inbox" folders.
    Looks like this:
    - INBOX
    - ....INBOX
    - ........INBOX
    - ............INBOX
    - ................INBOX
    - .....................Apple Mail To Do
This set of folders sits in alpha order within my main list of folders, it's separate from the real Inbox that sits at the top of my folder list.
When I attempt to delete all six folders I get a message saying that the various INBOXES don't exist. When I delete just the To Do folder, the INBOX folders are deleted as well. (Until the whole thing is recreated!)
Incidentally, my IMAP Path Prefix in Mail.app's preferences is set to: INBOX
So I suspect if I were to change that to blank, then the nesting would (maybe?) stop.
All the same, can anyone explain this behaviour (it's fairly recent, following a decent period where I wasn't plagued by To Do folders at all)? Why would it be nesting multiple "INBOX" folders, rather than just one?
What can I do to get the To Do folder to stay away?

This solution does not delete the AppleMail Todo mailbox but provides a workaround that keeps those annoying subfolders out of your inbox and prevents them from "breeding."
(Note: In my case this issue began only after I started using an iPhone. I am using a 3rd party IMAP server provided by Network Solutions WITHOUT SSL. I cannot say the following is a universal workaround.)
The wage-donkey I spoke to at Apple Tech support- "Tier 2" no less - INSISTED this is not a problem caused by mail.app, but rather it was a server-side issue. He said the folder in question MUST exist on the server and is being pushed to the mac every time the IMAP mailbox is created in mail app. Rather than attempting to trouble-shoot the issue, he adamantly argued his point until I hung up.
You can attempt to prove his point for him by trying the following:
    1) Log on your mail server via web browser and delete the offending folders.
    2) move ~/Library/Mail and ~/Library/Preferences/apple.mail.plist to the trash.
    3) Disconnect computer from the internet.
    4) Set-up IMAP account manually.
    5) Relaunch mail.app.
The application will request permission to create an Apple Mail ToDo folder in the newly created Inbox.
(It would seem Mail.app is designed to automatically create the ToDo mailbox and place it on the server, which it cannot do without an internet connection. One would assume a "Tier 2" Apple Support technician would know this. He didn't.)
    6) Hit cancel to deny Mail.app's request.
The server-side folders that should normally appear in a mailbox OUTSIDE of your inbox should now all be contained WITHIN the mailbox. This should include a Gray folder called "ToDo" with a subfolder mbox (youraccountname)
    7) Quit mail.app
    8) Restore your internet connection.
    9) Relaunch mail.app. It will make the same request as step 5. Click ALLOW.
Mail.app should move all of the folders from your inbox to a server-side subfolder containing the Gray ToDo folder and the subfolder "mbox (youraccountname)."
DO NOT delete this folder. You can open it without consequence. You should no longer have the issue of subfolders breeding in your inbox every time you reboot.
To further test the mai.app-side/server-side argument, I deleted the entire mailbox from the server and created a new one before trying the above steps. Same issue. The folder in question is almost certainly created by mail.app and not residing on the server. Though I cannot isolate the cause, I'm confident it lies somewhere in the combination of SSL settings, iPhone integration and mail.app.
In my experience, Mac Tech Support has not helped solve a real problem since OS 9. In one instance a mac "genius" suggested my mother wipe her drive and reinstall the OS to solve her airport problem. It turns out all he had to do was turn off Interference Robustness in her airport settings. User message boards know more collectively than any Tech Support Associate I have ever encountered. Apple doesn't want to take your call so take the hint and stop calling.

  • Mail app keeps re-caching all messages when it starts

    Hello
In past 10 days i have a very big problem which gives me headaches already. The problem is ( i did not change anything!) mail.app keeps re-caching all messages and attachments everytime i start the app. I have over 40.000+ mails so you do the math about how my bandwith eaten by the app. As i said i did not change anything. Anyway after searching dozens of forums and suggestions i did these steps:
    - removed MessageUidsAlreadyDownloaded3 files. No fix alsa mail.app won't create new ones since then
    - removed whole cache, files, folders and accounts and re add them. No fix
    - Clean install of mavericks. No fix
    - Tried other apps like airmail, sparrow. Kinda no fix because airmail wont download whole messages only 1 month period even i choose to have all messages. Sparrow keeps giving error of unable to locate folders on the server. Only my windows thunderbird client works like a charm, there is no any issue at all but i hate windows.
    - some terminal commands before clean install which i really dont remember due to high number of commands. By the way i am using IMAP settings
I really need a help here. I am talking about huge number of mails which are very important for me.
    Thank you

    Please read this whole thread:
Mail keeps downloading everything over and over.

  • Selecting text becomes very slow in terminal app

I use the terminal app a lot.  Since I've upgraded to Lion, after running for a few days when I try to select some text to copy and paste, it gets slower and slower and eventually takes a minute or two to copy the text.  Terminal just sits there and I can't select another terminal window.  The copied text is not in the clipboard yet because if I try to paste into another app the old contents are there.   I'm trying to figure out if there's something I do that triggers this or if it's just how long terminal's been running.  It seems to be worse with multiple line selects. I often resize windows a lot - very wide to see output lines without wrap and then back narrow for normal output.  I have a lot of saved lines per window (10,000).  I move the laptop between home and work by just putting it to sleep, and when I plug it into a different size monitor all my open terminal windows come up about 50x100 pixels and I have to resize them back to normal size (that's new with Lion).  But none of this is different from how I worked before Lion and it never got slow.  When I'm working the delay makes it almost impossible to use copy and paste.  If I reboot  it's ok again for a while.   Anyone else seen this?  I've seen posts about the terminal app being slow to open, but this is different.  Any ideas?   thanks.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select Help from the menu bar, and enter “Set up a guest account” (without the quotes) in the search box.
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem(s)?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
Note: If you’ve activated FileVault in Mac OS X 10.7 or later, then you can’t enable the Guest account. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode.) Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

I did not create the file to be read-only. I created to be able to continue to add to it as I work on it.

Sounds like a permissions problem ie read only.
If running repair permissions from your DiskUtility.app does not sort it,
Someone should jump in here with erudite and concise fix.
