Terminal command for sata link speed?

OS10.6.7. MBP 5.3 with 256GB SSD.
Since the "negotiated link speed" for the SSD is 3 GB/s most of the time, it varies from 3 GB/s to 1.5 GB/s once in a while. Is there a terminal command to "force" the SSD to always connect with a "negotiated link speed" of 3GB/s??
<Edited by Host>

If you "force" it, then you aren't "negotiating". I suggest letting it work the way it wants. You already get faster speed with that than most of us regular people could imagine.

  • SATA link speed

Hi, this topic didn't appear to be up here yet, so I'm going to ask it. When did the white MacBook switch to the SATA 3.0 Gb/s standard? I recently updated my hard drive to one that has 3.0 capability, but the link speed in the System Profiler says 1.5 only.
Every bit of research I've done tells me that SATA hardware is forward- and backward-compatible, meaning the only thing standing between my new hard drive and its full capability is the MacBook's firmware.
I noticed a recent firmware release for MacBook Pros that "unlocks" the faster standard, and it also mentioned that the newer white MacBooks have it already set up no problem. So my question is: Which model is the earliest capable of SATA 3.0 Gb/s? Also, if my late-2007 MacBook is not compatible...why is that? What is actually responsible for this limitation, if not firmware?
    Thanks.
P.S. Your login link malfunctioned in Safari ("404 - We can't find the page you're looking for"). I had to use Firefox to post this message...my Mac was disappointed. Better get your "geniuses" on that

Ah yes, I admit now to have forgotten to search the MacBook Pro discussion posts. That's the only place I now see a date mentioned.
And indeed, this afternoon Safari allowed me to log in, after a week or so of "malfunctioning."
Thanks for the answer, but I would still like to understand what part of the computer is responsible for the 1.5 Gb/s limitation, since serialata.org clearly states that its hardware is forward compatible.
You have an impressive collection of devices; can I have one? :P

  • Terminal command for tabs to open in same window

anyone know the terminal command to have all links open in tabs instead of a new window - why does mac call it tabs when it does not even actually work - any help would be great - i had the command and i deleted it......driving me nuts

    Greetings,
There is no such command; there is a command to force targeted links to open in new tabs, but it will have no effect on links that are controlled by JavaScript. Open Terminal and enter:
defaults write com.apple.Safari TargetedClickCreateTabs -bool true
press Enter or Return, then quit Terminal and restart Safari.

  • Terminal Commands for Internet Connect VPN?

I could maybe do this as an applescript but I'm hoping there are terminal commands which I can incorporate into an rsync script...
I need to open a PPTP VPN connection on a computer (Internet Connect VPN client, 10.4.8) , to connect to VPN services on OS X Server (10.4.8). The configuration works fine but really needs manual intervention at times. I would like to just script the equivalent of hitting the 'connect' button, so this can be run by cron.
    Any ideas or links?
    Ta.
    -david

I did repair permissions with disk Utility and I used Onyx to delete the various caches, but that didn't work.
Everything is functioning. The problem isn't on the VPN server side, because I can log into the VPN on my Powerbook and the status shows correctly. There's definitely something going on with my G5.
This isn't a really huge deal, but it would be nice if the status indicated that I'm connected when I'm connected.

  • What Is The Terminal Command For PRAM & SMC Reset?

Hi Folks - Cant get my Macbook Pro to shut down (instead it does a re-start) thus the key combination for these re-sets doesnt seem to function (no chimes). I saw in another thread a terminal command entry "sudo nvram boot-args=”-p -r” but I also saw it mentioned that entering that casued the following to pop-up "Note that resetting the PRAM will wipe out the contents of the boot-args environment variable, which means the command would need to be reissued each startup." Whats with "reissued each startup"? Also would like a an SMC re-set command. THANKS in advance!

I dont know of a terminal command but here is how to reset the SMC:
Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
Resetting the SMC on Mac portables with a battery you can remove
    Shut down the computer.
Disconnect the MagSafe power adapter from the computer, if it's connected.
Remove the battery (to remove the battery - click here: MacBook or MacBook Pro).
Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    Release the power button.
Reconnect the battery and MagSafe power adapter.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
Resetting the SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own
    Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.

Is there a Mac key command for the 'send link' under the File Menu? I use this a lot and like to use key commands.
    Thanks, Connie

    Go to

Click on the 'Keyboard' tab and hit the 'modifier keys...' button. You can see and change the defaults there.
As I'm not sure if all the labels are the same in Lion, he's a screenshot from Snow Leopard. It should be similar enough:

  • Terminal Command for "Folders On Top" in Mountain Lion

Looking for a terminal Command that will place all "Folders On Top", even in sub-folders. The utility I was using on Lion does'nt work on ML anymore.

Looks like to me there has been a recent update to TotalFinder.  Claims to support 10.8, now. See
    http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/33373/totalfinder
I misunderstood your questions.  I thought you wanted to display the files in the Terminal.  You want to change the way the finder displays files.

  • Terminal command for Folder List?

What is the command line for Terminal to print out a list of folders on my HD? It doesn't have to actually send the result to my printer. I would happy with just a list on the screen.

Open Firefox and drag the folder into its open window.  You'll get this type of presentation:
You can print the Firefox window. Much easier than messing with the Terminal (especially for those of us that are terminally challenged )

  • Terminal Commands for Identifying  Apps as 32-Bit, 64-Bit, or Both

I posted a prior topic on this matter, but cannot find it. I have seen these what I am asking about, but can't locate them. I am trying to identify the terminal commands noted in my subject.

This is what I was looking for:
    In terminal, type: file /Applications/Safari.app/Contents/MacOS/Safari
What is returned is below. The second/third line identifies Safari as a universal binary with two architectures. The fourth/fifth line identifies the architectures as 32 bit and 64 bit. I am not sure what the sixth/seventh line does unless it identifies Safari as being compatible with PowerPC.
    xxxx-MacBook-Pro:~ donv1$ file /Applications/Safari.app/Contents/MacOS/Safari
    /Applications/Safari.app/Contents/MacOS/Safari: Mach-O universal binary with 2
    architectures
    /Applications/Safari.app/Contents/MacOS/Safari (for architecture x86_64):
    Mach-O 64-bit executable x86_64
    /Applications/Safari.app/Contents/MacOS/Safari (for architecture i386): Mach-O
    executable i386
For any wondering. If SL is started in 64-bit kernel mode, then it will run Safari as a 64-bit program. The same will happen if SL is started in 32-bit mode. Leopard also will run Safari as a 64-bit program. Suppose one has a purely 64-bit program. The same things will happen. Note also that some 32-bit programs will run in 64-bit mode, and, at least in some cases, they will run faster in 64-bit mode. On the other hand, some 32-bit programs will not run in 64-bit mode.
Thus, at this time, the benefits from being able to start in 64-bit mode are minimal. That is, one might be able to run some 32-bit programs slightly faster than in 32-bit mode. On the other hand, this minor benefit would, IMO, be offset by not being able to run certain 32-bit or 64-bit programs simultaneously. I'll be sticking with 32-bit mode.
If there currently is more to the story than I have told, then please pile on. I am always interested in avoiding misinformation.

  • Terminal Commands for Bluetooth?

    Hello,
When looking at my system settings via the System Info function, I learn that there is a discrepancy between the actuall settings and whatever I belive is going on based on the System Preferences window.

(My post didn't show up in it's entirety. Here is my complete post)
    Hello,
When looking at my system settings via the System Info function, I learn that there is a discrepancy between the actual settings and whatever I believe is going on based on the System Preferences window.
I have shut down all Bluetooth functionality using System Preferences, a I have disabled Bluetooth in the network settings. When viewing System Info, Bluetooth is enabled, live and well with specific custom settings. Does anyone know of a Terminal command(s) to shut down and prevent Bluetooth from working (I'm mainly concerned with file sharing but would like to shut down all functionality.
Also, the same for the Airport as well.
    Danke

  • Need terminal command for setting display colors ASAP!!!!!

    Hello everyone,
I was being dumb and figured, oh what will this do?
I know, I know one of those button pushers...anyway I set the Display colors to 256 on my Xserve, which has no video card in it, and now all I see in Chicken of the VNC is a black screen. Im sure there is a terminal command out there where
I can ssh into the Xserve, and change the colors back, but I can't find it...could someone post it up here or point me in the right direction please?
    Thanx in advance!!!!!!!

didn't even think of that...seems to be the most obvious things, seem to be the first to be overlooked.

  • Terminal command for showing bandwidth

    Hallo,
is there a way to show my current internet or LAN bandwith in the terminal?
    Thank you. Hannes

If you have another Mac, like at your work, and you can get through your work's firewalls and ssh to it, you could, from the keyboard,
    scp localSourcefile ${Work}:destinationDirectory
to get an indication of your upload speed and
    scp ${Work}:sourcefile localDestinationDirectory
to get an indication of your download speed (assuming your work's effective bandwidth was always going to be much greater than your home's bandwidth). Those commands will provide you an indication of actual throughput ("goodput") of your file transfer. Your file should be a "respectable" size, though, so as to get a decent average value.
I am not aware of any single command that will just tell you throughput. Seems like you'd have to be transferring a file to obtain that information, e.g., with scp.
For use in a bash shell script, I played around with trying to do an scp and piping it to awk (e.g.,
thruput=`scp localSourcefile ${Work}:destinationDirectory | awk '{ print $4 }'` && echo $thruput but I couldn't get it to work. That is something that you might try experimenting with on your own, though. Plus, you would have had to set up passwordless ssh with DSA public key exchange in order to make it a "hands-off" shell script.

  • MBP (9,1) Optical Drive SATA link speed?

I have found about 400 different answers for this question. Every messageboard i post to seems to have a different opinion, so to end all my confusion:
Does the Optical Drive SATA port in the Macbook Pro 9,1 non-retina model have a 6 Gbps link, or does it have a 3 Gbps link.
I have been told different answers from numerous Apple techs, and cant seem to get a concrete answer on this one. Anyone know?

It has a SATA 3 rating, 6 GBs. Whether you will ever see that or whethere it really works with fast drives, SSDs, is another story.

  • [Guide] Useful terminal commands for troubleshooting/system status.

Hi everyone.  I'm looking for a concise list of useful commands to run incase something should happen to be going wrong somewhere (and also a 1-line for what they do)...the kind of output you'd post in a bug report.  Some other good commands would help make "whats going on under the hood" more clear.
Also, if you have some useful directories (like /var/log), I'll take them too.
Current List (Thanks to all the posts below):
iwconfig, ifconfig | currently running wireless and overall link/state status.
dmesg | down/n/dirty low level system activity log
    htop (non-built-in) | Process monitor
iftop, nethogs (non-built-in) | Bandwidth usage monitor
    lsmod | Currently loaded modules
pstree | Currently running processes in a tree-text format
df -h | Hard drive space usage
    ps -A -ao rss,comm | sort -rn | sed -n '1,5{s/^/\t/;s/ /\t/p}' | Top 5 ram hogs and how much
    xsel -o -p |  Clipboard monitoring (non-built-in)
    xsel -o -b |
    /var/log - looking for a log from a system process...probably here.
~/.XXXX - User installed programs house their config files here... ~/ = Your username's home directory.  Equivalent to Application Data on Windows.

ltrace -- strace-like, but shows library calls, not only system ones.
vmstat -- shows many essential system parameters at a glance, first tool to start investigating bottlenecks
lsof -- "list open files"; as network sockets, pipes, ... are all "files", there are many interesting informations to gather. But I use it for two purposes mainly: to identify file descriptors in strace/ltrace output and for finding deleted, but still open files eating disk space.
I like atop also, for its ability to show aggregated data, grouped by user or process name.
