Terminal Command to disable/enable Safari Sound?

Does anyone know of a command (or even a 3rd party utility) which would allow for sound control/mute for Safari only?
I do not like to be disturbed by the sound of animated gifs/popups etc. when I am listening to my iTunes while browsing the internet.
Thank You!

You could hijack Safari's sound with Audio Hijack Pro.

If you are just going to mute the sound, you can use it without buying a license key.

  • Is there a terminal command to disable the "Boing' sound ?

    Hello, Everyone
I was wondering if any one knows if there is a terminal command that can
be used to disable the "boing" sound that folders and files make (in Tiger)
as they are being moved about the desktop and or into finder windows.
A couple of people have looked in the System preferences, usual areas but
can not locate the file for this "Boing" sound. If any one knows I would love
the answer. TIA for reading this & any help.; )

Mine doesn't make a sound when I do this.
I presume you have unchecked the "Play user interfacesound effects" > in System Preferences> Sound. The other OP wants to disable only the infamous boing. I found both the files you wrote of. Thank you very much !
I just needed to summarize this & then undoing if so desired.
Bill, please what would the command be for undoing this action ?
Launch Terminal and type this: sudo gzip
    enter ~~
    password prompt,
    then this : /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/ScreenReader.framework/Versions/A/Resources/S ounds/SpringForward.aiff
    Is this correct ?
Thanks so very, very much for your expertise, patience and sharing it with me.~ Eme

  • Terminal commands with automator and Safari

Hey guys, I'm trying to create an automator that will open safari, enable private browsing, go to my site, and log myself in. The problem is I need a terminal command line that will ensure private browsing is enabled. Any tips / help is appreciated. Thanks

  • Terminal command to disable "You have forced ****to quit"?

It happens often enough to be a pain. I have gone to Console prefs and selected "Automatically send diagnostic and usage data to Apple"
I still get the dialog box with the choice to Ignore or Report.
Is there a terminal command that would rid me of having to make that choice, as I always choose "Ignore"?

I did change My Settings. Thanks. Something I didn't think of. The force quits are from Mail, Aperture, and Safari. They're not frequent, and a force quit fixes the problem, but I'd like to avoid the dialog.
For example, here is an Aperture freeze from Console:

  • Airplay Mirroring enable via Terminal Command?

    Hi,
Remember in OS X lion when you cannot enable airdrop on certian macs, maybe, we can find a terminal command that will allow us to enable airplane mirroring on older Macs.  Im working to find one right now

Yes, when the Terminal produces information on how to use a specific command, no changes were made to your configuration. This happens if you pass a command a parameter it doesn't know how to handle, or when you access a manual page through the Terminal.

  • How can I change the "Ask to join new networks" option using a terminal command?

We are currently switching to a new wireless network throughout our school district and I have pushed commands to connect to the new and remove the old. However, any Macs that have "Ask to join new networks" enabled are jumping over to our unsecure guest network, even if that network has been removed from the list of Preferred Networks. So far the fix has been to remove the guest network from the list of Preferred Networks and then disable Ask to join. The only issue I'm running into now is I have been unable to find a terminal command to change this setting. Once I have the command I can write a script and send that out to all of the Macs.
So is there a way to disable "Ask to join new networks" using command line?

  • Terminal Commands for Bluetooth?

    Hello,
When looking at my system settings via the System Info function, I learn that there is a discrepancy between the actuall settings and whatever I belive is going on based on the System Preferences window.

(My post didn't show up in it's entirety. Here is my complete post)
    Hello,
When looking at my system settings via the System Info function, I learn that there is a discrepancy between the actual settings and whatever I believe is going on based on the System Preferences window.
I have shut down all Bluetooth functionality using System Preferences, a I have disabled Bluetooth in the network settings. When viewing System Info, Bluetooth is enabled, live and well with specific custom settings. Does anyone know of a Terminal command(s) to shut down and prevent Bluetooth from working (I'm mainly concerned with file sharing but would like to shut down all functionality.
Also, the same for the Airport as well.

  • How do i reverse a Terminal command?

I had previously enabled this Command in Terminal to gain access to my NAS drive storage in iMovie, which worked fine.... But now I would like to Disable/reverse the effects of the command below:
defaults write -app iMovie allowNV -bool true
I do not want my NAS drive to show in iMovie.
How can I do this please?
    Thanks.

Use the same Terminal command but change true to false.
    Example:
defaults write -app iMovie allowNV -bool false

  • Disable start up sound

On Leopard I could simply put down the volume before a shut down, and I had no anoying start up sound. However this seems not to work anymore on Lion.Which possibilities do I have to start my system without the roaring bong?

I've found another solution how to disable the startup sound. It also works on Lion - at least for me.
There is some terminal stuff to do, but it's worth it imo ;-)
    Ok here we go:
    1. Login as administrator and open a terminal window
    2. Create scriptfile for muting
    sudo nano /path/to/mute-on.sh
    3. Enter this as content, when done press control+O to save and control+X to exit:
    #!/bin/bash
osascript -e 'set volume with output muted'
    4. Create scriptfile for unmuting
    sudo nano /path/to/mute-off.sh
    5. Enter this as content, when done press control+O to save and control+X to exit:
    #!/bin/bash
osascript -e 'set volume without output muted'
    6. Make both files executable:
    sudo chmod u+x /path/to/mute-on.sh
    sudo chmod u+x /path/to/mute-off.sh
    7. Check if any hooks already exist (these will be overwritten, so make sure it is OK for you)
    sudo defaults read com.apple.loginwindow LoginHook
    sudo defaults read com.apple.loginwindow LogoutHook
    8. Add hooks for muting
sudo defaults write com.apple.loginwindow LogoutHook /path/to/mute-on.sh
sudo defaults write com.apple.loginwindow LoginHook /path/to/mute-off.sh
    Notes:
    - /path/to/ is the location of the scripts, I used /Library/Scripts/
    - you can skip the unmuting loginhook (i.e. each logout will silence your machine), but I like it this way because I always have sound available exactly at the volume level I set last time
    - root has to be the owner of the script files - running an editor from command line with sudo is the easiest way to achieve that (otherwise you need to chown)
    - to delete the hooks, use the following:
    sudo defaults delete com.apple.loginwindow LoginHook
    sudo defaults delete com.apple.loginwindow LogoutHook

  • Terminal command for tabs to open in same window

anyone know the terminal command to have all links open in tabs instead of a new window - why does mac call it tabs when it does not even actually work - any help would be great - i had the command and i deleted it......driving me nuts

    Greetings,
There is no such command; there is a command to force targeted links to open in new tabs, but it will have no effect on links that are controlled by JavaScript. Open Terminal and enter:
defaults write com.apple.Safari TargetedClickCreateTabs -bool true
press Enter or Return, then quit Terminal and restart Safari.

  • External Speakers Randomly Stop Working until I "Test" or Disable/Enable

    I'm using a HP Pavillion DV6 Notebook PC Running Windows 7 Professional 64-bit SP1.
External speakers randomly stop working until I "test" or disable/enable them. Headphone/HDMI Audio Works.
    Background
-Recently had to do a clean install of windows.
-Went to the HP Drivers Website and downloaded all of the latest drivers.
-I installed several other programs as well (Flash, Steam, Media Player, Browser)
    -The problem started
    Current Settings
-My deafult device is "Speakers and Headphones: IDT High Definition Audio CODEC"
    -Enhancements are disabled
-Bass and Treble are set to 4
-Format is set to 16 bit, 48000 Hz (DVD Quality)
-Allowing applications to take exclusive control of the device or not doesn't make a difference (but it's currently off)
    Troubleshooting
-The audio works by plugging in headphones or using an HDMI device
-The audio comes back if I go to my sound settings and hit "Test", or if I disable and re-enable the device
    Error Messages
-Youtube starts the video for 3 seconds, restarts and sputters a bit, and then says that there was an error
-My media player (MusicBee) gives me this message: "Unable to start playback (Error = BASS_ERROR_BUFLOST)"
That's everything I can think of. Any ideas?

I see that you are having a frustrating time with the sound to your external speakers. Have you tried connecting the speakers to another computer to see if is a hardware issue with the speakers? Do the regular speakers work? What is your product number as there are several models in the dv6 series?

  • Terminal command to refresh USB peripheral device

I'm running OS 10.7.5, and I have a recurring problem with the USB ports on my Mac mini.  After several days of up-time, one or more of the ports will sometimes become non-responsive.  This seems to be software related, because logging off and logging back into the machine always fixes the problem (as does a restart and a cold-reboot).  I was thinking maybe the "checklist" of device filenames somehow gets corrupted over time, and needs to be recreated.
Does anyone know how to refresh the list of peripheral devices without restarting, rebooting, or logging off?  Ideally a terminal command?  I'm hoping not to have to keep shutting down the session each time this happens to get my list of connected devices back.
Thanks very much for your suggestions for the newbie.

    Hi Korby,
If you are having difficulties with USB devices such as you describe, I would suggest resetting your Mac mini’s parameter RAM, as described in this article -
    About NVRAM and PRAM
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
    Specifically -
    Resetting NVRAM / PRAM
    Shut down your Mac.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
