Terminal command to reactivate mail activity wheel

Does anyone know a terminal command that allows you to view once again the activity wheel(s) next to the inbox/accounts, when checking mail? The mail activity indicator window on the bottom left is not really enough, and often shows no activity for few/small emails.
IMHO, it's unfortunate Mail shows you very little about its activity (without having to open the separate activity window).

They were there in Lion (you didn't need to enable them). They've been removed in Mountain Lion.
You're already aware of the two possibilities for monitoring activity on Mail: keeping the Activity window open in the background, or watching the monitor at the bottom of the Mail window. Neither is the same as the wheels, but that's all there is now.

  • Mail Activity Wheel for each Mailbox no longer in M.Lion

Until Mountain Lion, when Mail (version 6) accessed my mailboxes, each mailbox displayed a grey Activity Wheel. This is not happening in M.Lion. Under the button "Mail Activity" there is a progress bar when an attachment is being downloaded, and a message sound is heard even when no new messages are detected, but I miss the confirmation that each mailbox has been accessed and I can't find anywhere to set this.
    Can it be done please?

I think the nearest thing we've got now is the Mail Activitiy window which is hiiden away bottom left:

  • What's the terminal command to reindex mail?

    Hi all!
I have a corrupt POP mailbox (among a dozen or so active accounts I check with mail). Using the "rebuild" command simply loses all but the past few days of messages. Trashing the envelope files in my library file and forcing a reindex has the same effect -- I lose all but a couple of days worth of messages.
I have seen, in pre-Lion postings, references to using this command in terminal to fix a corrupt mailbox:
    sqlite3 ~/Library/Mail/Envelope\ Index vacuum;
But I am not sure that the syntax is correct, given that the subdirectories of the ~/Library/Mail folder were changed in Lion.
Does anyone have the correct syntax for this?
Any other help tips and suggestions would also be appreciated. The problem appears to affect only the inbox for one of my many accounts.
    Thanks for any help!

  • Gmail doesn't receive any new mail; mail activity wheel keeps spinning

    Hi all,
I have never had real problems with OSX Mail but since 2 days my Imap gmail account doesn't receive any mails anymore. I already checked the account info several times and they are all ok. Also the connection doctor doesn't detect any problem with either my internet connection or the mail servers I am using. When I use safari to check my mail online, there is no problem. Also, when I use Thunderbird to check the same account (with the same account info) it just works (but I hate Thunderbird!). I use 4 mail accounts, with 2 imap accounts and only the gmail is not working properly. I'm on mail 4.2 and OSX 10.6.2.
I already completely deleted the gmail account and reinstalled it, but the same problem keeps showing up. I also deleted the com.apple.mail.plst and the imap folder in the mail directory but still, after again setting up all my accounts, the gmail account keeps showing the 'fetching new mail' wheel.
I browsed this forum for a solution and found a lot of issues much alike, but not completely the same. Anyway, I hope you have a solution!
    Best regards,
    Jay

I've had similar problems that started about a week about after a system upgrade. I too have tried re-registering/re-indexing mail (by pulling the mail folders out to the desktop). I've run disk utility. I did the permissions first & corrected those, then I did the verify drive (couldn't select repair yet). The drive verification identified several errors & directed I restart on OS X DVD - which I did (after it reinstalled OS X). Then I ran validate drive & it didn't find any issues. However, my mail continues to bog down and give me the spinning wheel. In the past week I have to force quit mail at least 4-5 times a day. The system is only 2 months old & I only have one POP and one IMAP email linked to it. It appears that the IMAP (gmail) is the one causing the problems. I've triple checked the settings (which hadn't changed when the problems started).
I've spent several hours the past week researching all I can in the forums. It appears that this is a common problem with no real solutions.
As a new Mac owner, I'm not impressed so far. I haven't give up hope and it is also possible that it could be due to an unknown error on my part as a novice Mac user. Just the same, though, previous PCs at least lasted more than 2 months.
Like Jay, I hope someone has a solution. Thanks.

  • Mail, spinning wheel

When I send/retrieve mail I no longer get the little wheel spinning telling me it's looking?
So I have no way of knowing if it's doing what I asked for. Have to wait for the end of command beep sound.
It's a small thing but darned annoying.

Bottom left you can get a window for Mail Activity - not the same as what we no longer have but it appears to be the only thing available.

  • In Mail, is there a way to print the list of mail activity in a folder without actually printing each email?

In Mail, is there a way to print the list of mail activity in a folder without actually printing each email?
    Thanks to all.

Actually, I noticed in "More Like This" questions similar to mine.  One of the suggestions worked perfectly.
Command Shift 4 turns the arrow into a target scope.  Use it to take a screen shot of the area you want printed.  Thanks to all.

  • What are the terminal commands to list all plugins, extensions, etc?

I remember a while ago reading a thread on diagnosing kernel panics and such, where someone listed a number of commands (I think there were four separate terminal commands) which produced lists of plugins, daemons, background enhancers, extensions etc which could sap resources or drive up temperature without necessarily showing up in activity monitor or anything like that.
Anyone know what these commands are? I'm having some serious overheating problems at the moment when doing nothing but for instance watching a youtube video with no other processes running so I'd like to get these dumps and see if there's anything installed which could be causing trouble.

    Check this out : http://helpx.adobe.com/story/help/keyboard-shortcuts.html

  • I've used a terminal command to change default send keyboard shortcut and now it doesn't work at all!

My friend provided me with a Terminal command allow me to use Cmd+Enter to send an email (muscle memory from Outlook, hard to forget!)
    Command was:
    defaults write com.apple.mail NSUserKeyEquivalents -dict-add "Send" "@\\U21a9"
Did that, and it didn't add the Cmd+Enter instruction but removed the Cmd+Shift+D instruction, so I had NO keyboard shortcut. Then Cmd+Enter started working. For a while. Now I'm back to getting the irritating error bleep sound, and having no functional keyboard shortcut for sending mail.
    Does anybody have any advice?

    Try
    defaults delete com.apple.mail NSUserKeyEquivalents
    Then, relaunch Mail.

  • How to save terminal command as application

Does anybody know how to save this terminal command as an application? This is the command that I use to backup my computer, but it is annoying having to copy and paste it into terminal every time I want to use it. Here is the command:
sudo rsync -auE --progress / /Volumes/Backup
If I Paste this into terminal, it asks me for my password, then starts backing up. When I enter it into automator or applescript editor, there is an error. Thanks in advance!

I tried saving a shell script command in an Applescript but when I run the script, it runs but then I get a spinning wheel, as if the script is in an endless loop. Can someone clarify what I need to do?
    My script:
do shell script "/System/Library/CoreServices/Finder.app/Contents/MacOS/Finder & disown"

  • Undo terminal command

I recently followed these instructions to stop iTunes from automatically downloading tv shows every time I opened it:
With iTunes open select iTunes > Preferences... and click the Store tab
If checked, uncheck checkbox Always check for available downloads
If checked, uncheck checkbox Download pre-orders when available
Click the OK button, and close iTunes
    Open Applications > Utilities > Terminal.app
    Type cd ~/Music/iTunes/iTunes\ Media/Downloads then press <Enter>
Type rm -rf * to delete the plist file along with all of the downloads of TV shows
Re-open iTunes. There shouldn't be TV shows automatically downloading any longer when you open iTunes. Breath. Relax. Rejoice.
The result was, on restarting the computer, that all my documents, iPhoto library, iTunes library, and Mail folders were gone. I realize now that I'm not expert enough be running Terminal commands. My question is: is there any way to undo this damage?

If you don't have a backup of them, try using a data recovery product such as the ones listed here. Don't write anything else to the drive until the files are recovered or you choose not to recover them.

  • Anyone any advice on how to stop my mail "activity" from continuously caching? is this a problem? I have had inbox issues recently that are not resolved yet but I am not sure if they are related.

Anyone any advice on how to stop my mail "activity" from continuously caching? is this a problem? I have had inbox issues recently that are not resolved yet but I am not sure if they are related.

Quit Mail. Force quit if necessary.
Back up all data. That means you know you can restore the Mail database, no matter what happens.
Triple-click the line below on this page to select it:
    ~/Library/Mail/V2/MailData/Envelope Index
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C). In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the menu bar. Paste into the box that opens (command-V), then press return.
A Finder window will open with a file selected. Move the selected file to the Desktop, leaving the window open. Other files in the folder may have names that begin with "Envelope Index". Move those files, if any, to the Trash.
Log out and log back in. Relaunch Mail. It should prompt you to re-import your messages. You may get a warning that the index is corrupt and that Mail has to quit. Click OK.
Test. If Mail now works as expected, you can delete the file you moved to the Desktop. Otherwise, post your results.

  • Terminal Command(s) to Identify an App as 32-Bit, 64-Bit, or Universal.

I am sure I am doing something wrong, but each time I see a terminal command to do what is indicated above, I try it, and it doesn't work for me.
So, I would greatly appreciate someone definitely in to know helping me out with the command(s) mentioned in my subject.

    I believe the command you're looking for (or at least one that works) is "file";
    The example below indicates that Mail.app is capable of launching as a 64bit app;
    +[Shirow:~] shmoo% file /Applications/Mail.app/Contents/MacOS/Mail+
    +/Applications/Mail.app/Contents/MacOS/Mail: Mach-O universal binary with 2 architectures+
    +/Applications/Mail.app/Contents/MacOS/Mail (for architecture x86_64): Mach-O 64-bit executable x86_64+
    +/Applications/Mail.app/Contents/MacOS/Mail (for architecture i386): Mach-O executable i386+
    Below indicates that VLC installed on my mac is only a 32bit app;
    +[Shirow:~] shmoo% file /Applications/VLC.app/Contents/MacOS/VLC+
    +/Applications/VLC.app/Contents/MacOS/VLC: Mach-O executable i386+

  • Terminal command to disable "You have forced ****to quit"?

It happens often enough to be a pain. I have gone to Console prefs and selected "Automatically send diagnostic and usage data to Apple"
I still get the dialog box with the choice to Ignore or Report.
Is there a terminal command that would rid me of having to make that choice, as I always choose "Ignore"?

I did change My Settings. Thanks. Something I didn't think of. The force quits are from Mail, Aperture, and Safari. They're not frequent, and a force quit fixes the problem, but I'd like to avoid the dialog.
For example, here is an Aperture freeze from Console:
