Terminal help (i'm a newbie, too)

Ok. i've been using firefox as my browser and i have to start it in safemode to fix an extension problem/bad profile. while going through the troubleshooting steps, i eventually reached this: "go to your Terminal and run:
/Applications/Firefox.app/Contents/MacOS/firefox -safe-mode"
well, i did that (using the correct folder string, but nothing happened except for ">" to appear on the next line after i hit enter. how the heck do i get the program to launch? i'm really lost when it comes to Terminal. i'm not an ubergeek and i'm not someone who's using a computer for the first time, either. i know my way around terminology pretty well, so anyone who can help, don't worry about trying to explain it to a novice.

   What Brant is trying to tell you is that you generally see the PS2 prompt, '>', when you fail to close a quote. However, you've made precision difficult. If you post the exact command that you executed, we might be able to help.

Help Viewer Font Size Way Too Small

Hello,
The font size of the adobe help viewer content is way too
small (it looks like a 4 pt or something). I can hardly read it at

zoom setting that would allow for this. Sadly, it seems to have
disappeared and I'm unsure why.

Help!!! Newbie here!

Alright. I have CS3 and am 'trying' to get used to it. I am trying to do a vintage effect and of course this takes many steps. One of the steps (almost one of the lasts) is to go to Filter>Distort>Lens Correction AND then from there, use the Vignette Slider, etc...
Well, Under MY Filter, there is NO distort, there was in my CS2, so I dunno what the deal is. I used the Help Search and it found the distort under the Edit>Transform>Distort. BUT, the distort is greyed out! I have tried everything. It IS in 8 bit, I've even tried 16 bit... NOT working. The only time distort even comes up is if I go to another 'blank' layer... and of course, I can't do anything with it! :(
so, what do i need to do to get the distort working... it's there, but it's greyed out. Please help. And I don't know if this will give my email or not, please feel free to email me also with your help! :D thanks!

Safari display help for a Mac newbie!

Hi everyone,
I have never used Macs before so I hope this question isn't too ridiculous...!
When using Safari, all the web pages I open are either half or three-quarters the size of the screen even when I use the little plus (maximize) button in the top left hand corner.
Only one page has ever fitted the full screen. Is there any way to make all pages opened with safari full-screen size? I've fiddled around with the settings but to no avail...
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

The easiest way I have found to do this is to high light and drag the following java script to your bookmarks menu bar. Name it any thing you want. I called mine re-size. Click it and it will expand the window full page. It works with Safari 2, safari 3 beta, FireFox, Omni-wed, and SeaMonkey.

Help - I'm a newbie to Mac

I don't know Mac or Unix, but I am in the process of setting up a Xserve for handling e-amil. What should I do about spam? The GUI is doing nothing to block spam. I downloaded and installed spamtrainer...but I don't know how to configure it. I also need to do some whitelisting and setting up auto reply for when I go on vacation. I appreicate any and all help you can give!

Ok. I hate to piecemeal this out, but it's easier to take this one step at a time.
Let's confirm that your content filter (spam and virus protection) is running. Open Server Admin and click on "Mail" and then choose "Logs" from the bottom tab.
Use the "Show" pop-up tab at the bottom to choose: "Junk Mail/Virus Scanning"
You'll need to look over the section of the amavis.log that is published here. This is where amavis reports your spam (spamassassin) and virus (clamav) processes. Just check here to make sure things look good (i.e., not-getting-anything or getting a bunch of error messages is a bad thing).
If things look good, then use the "Show" pop-up tab at the bottom and choose "Virus Database Updates." This is your freshclam.log. This reports on the process of keeping your clamav (virus) database ... fresh (get it ... freshclam).
You should see some messages here that indicate that your main.cvd is up to date, your daily.cvd is updated, etc. Don't get nervous about the "WARNING: Your ClamAV installation is OUTDATED!" That's normal. Just ignore.
If all of that looks good, then we can get your SpamAssassin set-up fine-tuned with spamtrainer.
It sounds like you've already installed Pterobyte's spamtrainer (using his GUI installer package). However, before we start using spamtrain, let's do one quick thing. Open Work Group Manager (WGM) and create two new users. Name one "junkmail" and name the other "notjunkmail" For both users, click the "Mail" tab at the top of of the right screen, and "Enable" their mail and give them both POP and IMAP mail access.
Save those users.
Now ... let's go set up spamtrainer (which you already installed using Pterobyte's installer).
Open Terminal and issue "sudo spamtrainer -f" and hit return.
(you will be asked for a password)
Then issue "sudo spamtrainer -a"
Then issue "sudo spamtrainer -i"
(when you run the -i, you need to have an idea as to what time at night you want to have spamtrainer run each day. I use something like 3:00, but it doesn't really make much difference.)
The next step will be to tighten up your Postfix restrictions and do a little clean-up in your main.cf file, but let's do that after you do the checks and steps above. One quick question, do you know how to use a unix-based text editor like vi or pico to edit files?

Resizing DMG with Terminal help needed

I've got a DMG file with read/write privileges that I need to increase the size of. I've done a bunch of searching, both here and on the net, and the best I can find is a Terminal script, something I know nothing about. Here's the script I found:
hdiutil resize -size 25g /PATH/TO/DISK/IMAGE.dmg
But before I toss this into terminal with the modifications to make it work for mine, I just wanted to make sure I was doing everything right.
First, the path. The actual path is /Prima/Users/Doug/Desktop/work.dmg, that's how I type it? I've also seen just ~/Desktop/work.dmg so I figured I'd double check that.
Also, 25g, I have no idea what that measurement is since I've seen gb and a few other ones when I tried to search the script a bit more. I want 2.6GB, what would I need for that?
Finally, I'm guessing the "hdiutil" is just telling it that this is going to be working on a volume but I wanted to make sure that I had that right.
Any help you guys can give me would be great! Or if you can tell me another non-Terminal way to do this that'd be even better!

Terminal help - accidentally deleted /System/Library/Extensions

So I foolishly deleted my entire Extensions folder. I only trashed it though, not emptied. But I can't boot up. The only way I can get into anything is by using the retail Snow Leopard CD. From here I can get to the terminal.
So...
Can I restore my files from the trash via the terminal in the install cd?
I've been trying some commands but no luck so far.
Help is greatly appreciated.

Perfect. It took a little tweaking. First I had to create the "Extensions" directory again, and even then it wouldn't let me move a whole directory, just individual files. The "-R" command worked that out though.
The full code I ended up using was...

Help for an Oracle Newbie???

Hi there,
Sorry for probably a ridiculously stupid question but my boss has asked me to ask on here! Here goes -
We have a network with around 100 users. Previously we have used MS Access to report on our database, the users then logged into Access Reports and ran the required report. We are now looking at using Oracle Discoverer or similar. We have installed the developer suite and have downloaded Oracle Application Server 10g. We are able to create queries using discoverer and reports using the report builder.
My question is this - once i have created my reports (in .jsp format i believe), is it possible to host these using the application server?
The users need to log into a website or similar and select the report they need to run.
Any help would be appreciated - as i say, sorry for probably a silly question!!

Help! VerifyError: stack size too large??

I seem to have a class file with which the class file verifier has a complaint:
D:\test\out>java Probe
Exception in thread "main" java.lang.VerifyError: (class: Probe, method: main signature: ([Ljava/lang/String;)V) Stack size too large
Can anybody point me towards documentation about what the algorithm is or should be to calculate the correct stack size. Or documentation on the message?
I assume the meaning of the message is that the operand stack size is larger than used by the code for the static method main. However, I haven't a clue as to the algorithm I should verify the size against.

Thanks for the suggestion. I am running a modified Class file and have read the jvm spec. I was hoping somebody would have a suggestion as to what the error message actually means...
For example does this mean that the declared size of the operand stack is greater than that required by the code? Or perhaps that the declared size is too large for the code?
The actual method is quite small (on the order of 500 instructions).
I know that the jvm has a requirment that the operand stack have the same size along all control paths (loops, gotos, etc) to a specific instruction. I don't know what error the verifyer would give if this was the problem.
Is there any documentation anywhere the verifier's error messages?

Terminal help, wont stay open

every time i try to open terminal the screen appears for a brief second and then dissapears, and will contine to do this when u try to do anything. i recorded the screen and when i looked and it in slow motion it says this on the page header

Okay. I'm not sure which programming languages you're familiar with. Let's assume we're talking about C or C++. A source file is basically a (plain) text file that you (or someone else) has created. It'll have variables (and, I think, function definitions) declared first, followed by the actual code for the functions. For instance, a simple source file might look something like this (let's call this file hello.cpp):

#include <stdio.h>
#include <string.h>
main (int argc, char **argv)
printf("hello, world \n");
exit (0);
The "#include" statements tell the compiler to include some standard code files that handle things like displaying text. The 'main' function is the first function that will be called when the program begins to execute. Basically, this program prints 'hello, world' in your Terminal window and then quits (the program basically ignores any input given when the program starts up.). I think it'll compile.
Now, you can read the program, but computers don't operate on text files. The program has to be compiled into (what is known as) a binary file. This is basically a set of commands that your computer can understand and which looks like gibberish to most of us. The program 'gcc' will take your C or C++ source file and turn it into a binary file (or, as I referred to it before, a compiled program). So, after you create the plain text file above (I just use project builder, included with the developer tools. Any program that creates plain text files should work just fine), navigate to the folder containing your hello.cpp files and type
gcc -g -Wall -o hello hello.cpp
After a second, your command prompt should reappear, and you can type:
./hello
'hello world' should appear under your command prompt. The command './hello' instructs the computer to run the program 'hello' that is found in the current folder (the '.' denotes the current directory, so you don't have to type out /users/you/...../hello).
As for your second question, gcc should be able to compile any C or C++ files, which end in one of these: .c .cp .cpp .cxx .C .cc .c++
