Terminal - how to jump type to the start/end of a word or line?

How do I jump to the start or end of a word or line in Terminal?
In other OS X apps, Cmd or Opt + left/right arrows move to the start/end of a line or word respectively.

Try these (note: the first two require the shift key, at least for me):
ctrl-A beginning of line
ctrl-E end of line
(note: the next two require that you have the Terminal preferences, "settings" , "keyboard" opened, and the checkbox for "Use option as meta key" checked)
opt-f forward word
opt-b backward word
ctrl-u clears the line before the cursor position. If you are at the end of the line, clears the entire line.
ctrl-f forward character
ctrl-b backward character
ctrl-d delete character
ctrl-l clear screen
pageup page up in buffer
pagedwn page down in buffer

  • Film jumps back to the start

    When I play the film I edited and burned on DVD using DVD Studio Pro 4, in the middle of the film it suddenly jumps back to the very beginning of the film starting all over again. I set 18 chapter markers to divide the track and the point where it jumps back to the start is at one of the chapter markers. Is there something wrong with the settings of one of the markers? If yes, how can I change the settings so the film won't jump back to the start?
    Thank you very much for your help!
    John

    Look at that marker's properties in the property inspector (click in the marker) and check whether there is an 'end jump' set on it. If so, remove it...

    In Mail 7.3 on my Retina MacBook Pro on OS 10.9.4, how can I type from the keyboard into a mail message using the Apple Symbols font?
    When I select the Apple Symbols font from the list accessed from under Format/"Show fonts"/collection-all fonts/Apple Symbol, and then continue typing, I get normal letters, if in a slightly different font.
    How can I type using the Apple Symbol font?  I want to use that font to include keyboard and cursor selections of actual screen symbols to help write easily understood explicit computer lesson emails to my 92 year-old mom from a few hundred miles away.

  • HT5953 How can I speed up the "start speaking" feature in iBooks? (System Preferences Dictation and speech does not do anything to the speech speed.) The rate is a bit to slow.

    How can I speed up the "start speaking" feature in iBooks? (System Preferences Dictation and speech does not do anything to the speech speed.) The rate is a bit to slow.

    Hi, I had the same problem you described, and I noticed that there are two ways of activating text to speech on iBook for Mac, with different speed results (at least on my MacBook Pro Retina display)
    On your iBook you can select the text and and then click on > More> Start speaking,  and you will get a certain speed, which tends to be too slow.
    But you will get the speed you had selected with "Go to System Preferences>Dictation and Speech>Text to speech. In there is a slider to adjust the speaking rate." if you use the TOP MENU (next to the black apple)  under Edit>Speech>Start Speaking. I also learned that under System Preferences>Dictation and Speech>Text to speech, there is an option for a shortcut which is very helpful. And you can change Key. Hope this was helpful.

  • How can I shut down the start sound on my IMac under OS X 10.9.5

    How can I shut down the start sound on my IMac under OS X 10.9.5

    Did you try using 'mute' in the System Preferences> Sound> output>
    control panel? This usually will mute the startup sound; you may have
    to try a few things to be sure only the startup will mute, not all sounds.
    Of course, you could likely write an apple script in automator or in
    text edit, that could automatically mute before shutdown and then
    in startup items, have the script un-mute the audio for everything.
    There are possibilities that do not include the command line; but
    if you learn how to use that, without messing up other functions,
    then even more custom control is possible in Mac OS X.
    With that, you could write a substitute 'sound file' with white noise
    or nothing in there; so instead of Bong, it'd be as quiet as a mouse.
    PS: You may have a local reason why the site link posted above
    does not work for you, but it does function and if the product is
    free to use, and does not include adware or malware, here is an
    untested download link from their site. (I can go there, easily.)
    http://www.allvu.com/index.php/sndownloadpage.html
    and note:
    http://www.allvu.com/downloads/StartNinjaInstaller.dmg is the
    actual DL link for this product. Mouse over the buttons to see it.
    (The other downloads are highly suspect; even this one is to me)
    There may be a reason in your Mac OS X 10.9.x for gatekeeper
    to not allow odd download installations, there is a way around
    that feature, but I do not recommend using unknown software.
    In any event...
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • FCP Audio Clips in Soundtrack Pro - Marking the Start & End Points

    When I double click on an audio clip that I've sent from FCP into Soundtrack Pro I seem to open up the entire media file.
    How do I lock off or at least mark the clip start & end?
    I don't see any markers that tell me which part of the clip is actually used in the imported FCP sequence.
    I only want to make (non-destructive) changes to the clip.
    I don't want to alter the original media file.
    And I just want to work on the part that's used in the FCP sequence.
    It makes sense that there's a way to show the start & end points of the clip but I'm just not seeing it.

    I am a bit of a newb here, so pardon if my explanation is a little unpolished, but I have been working on some of my projects like you are and this is what i figured out. I select my sequence in FCP and send to stp as a multitrack project. The whole audio timeline shows up just as it looks in fcp, and the video track shows as one large clip that is made up of all my cuts put together. Now, my audio tracks are all on one line, and i can see all the clips with their cuts on the sequence. I click the first one and open it up to work on in the waveform editor. At that point i see the entire audio clip, including the part before and after my cut that i am using in my sequence, but i also see, up near the playhead, gray markers that show the actual part of the clip i am using in my edit. It is easest to hit shift-z to look at the entire clip on screen, and then find the grey markers. Also, if you play audio before the in marker, you will hear it but you will see that the video is not playing anything, then once you enter into the in-out section the video will play along, and when you pass the out marker the video freezes as the audio keeps playing. Hope this helps.

  • How to create geofence at the start of a geometry segment?

    I want to create a geofence at the start (and end) of each of our road sections.
    The geofence would extend exactly x(specified) metres at right angles to the segment direction at the start point.
    Is there any Oracle functionality to construct a line (or 2 points) at right angles to a point on a line?
    I can find the start point using this construction
    SELECT SDO_LRS.GEOM_SEGMENT_START_PT(geom)
    FROM ROAD_CENTRELINE_SDO WHERE id = 82;
    The only way I have found of creating the geometry is by using some trigonometry to calculate the angle subtended and create two equidistant points. This is rather clumsy and I wondered if anyone knew how to do this more efficiently using Oracle Spatial functionality.
    Philip

    Phil,
    I can understand that you found the packages complex. There is quite a bit of work gone into them over the years. Once you are over the install, and grow in your understanding of Spatial, you might find one or two of the functions quite useful. I am working on documentation... not enough hours in the day!
    Wrt you immediate question.
    Assuming that these two queries return the points you need:
    SELECT SDO_LRS.LOCATE_PT(a.geom, 0, -7) FROM ROAD_CENTRELINE_SDO a
    SELECT SDO_LRS.LOCATE_PT(a.geom, 0, 7) FROM ROAD_CENTRELINE_SDO a
    Then, because these functions return a point in the sdo_ordinate_array and not in SDO_POINT, you should be able to construct a line as follows:
    SELECT sdo_geometry(2002,l.SRID,NULL,sdo_elem_info_array(1,2,1),
           sdo_ordinate_array(l.column_value.x,l.column_value.y,
                              r.column_value.x,r.column_value.y))
      FROM ( SELECT a.ID, a.geom.sdo_srid as srid, b.*
               FROM ROAD_CENTRELINE_SDO a,
                    TABLE( SDO_UTIL.GET_VERTICES( SDO_LRS.LOCATE_PT(a.geom,0,-7) ) )
           ) l,
           ( SELECT c.ID, c.geom.sdo_srid as srid, d.*
               FROM ROAD_CENTRELINE_SDO c,
                    TABLE( SDO_UTIL.GET_VERTICES( SDO_LRS.LOCATE_PT(c.geom,0, 7) ) )
           ) r
    WHERE r.id = l.id;I have not tested this as I do not have an operational LRS in place but it should work. Of course, if the SDO_LRS.LOCATE_PT returned the data in an sdo_point structure all this complexity could be avoided. But this approach does not require the construction of a function that returns an sdo_point from an sdo_geometry with a point coded in sdo_ordinate_array (which would be result in nicer SQL). If you coded a function that did this:
      create or replace Function ToSdoPoint( p_geometry IN MDSYS.SDO_GEOMETRY )
        RETURN MDSYS.SDO_GEOMETRY DETERMINISTIC
        IS
         v_element         number;
         v_elements        number;
         v_geometry        MDSYS.SDO_Geometry;
         v_SdoPoint        MDSYS.SDO_Point_Type := MDSYS.SDO_Point_Type(0,0,NULL);
         v_Ordinates       MDSYS.SDO_Ordinate_Array;
      Begin
        IF ( MOD(p_geometry.sdo_gtype,10) not in (1,5) ) Then
          v_geometry := NULL;
        ELSIF p_geometry.sdo_point is not null THEN
          v_geometry := mdsys.sdo_geometry(p_geometry.sdo_gtype,p_geometry.sdo_srid,p_geometry.sdo_point,NULL,NULL);
        ELSE
          v_ordinates  := p_geometry.sdo_ordinates;
          v_SdoPoint.X := v_ordinates(1);
          v_SdoPoint.Y := v_ordinates(2);
          IF ( FLOOR(p_geometry.sdo_gtype/1000) = 3 ) THEN
            v_SdoPoint.Z := v_ordinates(3);
          END IF;
          v_geometry := mdsys.sdo_geometry(p_geometry.sdo_gtype,p_geometry.sdo_srid,v_SdoPoint,NULL,NULL);
        END IF;
        RETURN v_geometry;
      END ToSdoPoint;
    show errors
    select toSdoPoint(mdsys.sdo_geometry(2001,null,null,
                       sdo_elem_info_array(1,2,1),sdo_ordinate_array(1,2)))
      from dual;Then the SQL becomes:
    SELECT sdo_geometry(2002,SRID,NULL,sdo_elem_info(1,2,1),
           sdo_ordinate_array(left.x,left.y, right.x,right.y)) as geom
      FROM ( SELECT a.geom.sdo_srid as srid,
                   ToSdoPoint(SDO_LRS.LOCATE_PT(a.geom, 0, -7)) as left,
                   ToSdoPoint(SDO_LRS.LOCATE_PT(a.geom, 0,  7)) as right
               FROM ROAD_CENTRELINE_SDO a )Hope this helps.

  • How do I get to the start page when I'm not on it currently? there used to be a buttom for it

    I recently updated to version 6.0.2 of Firefox. This version doesn't seem to have a "home page" button. How do I get to the home page when I'm currently not on it? I shouldn't have to press the "backpage" button until I get there or type it in to get there.

    You can find the toolbar Home button at the far right end of the Navigation Toolbar.
    You can drag the Home button from its current position at the right to the previous position at the left of the location bar if you do not like that new position.

  • My Mozilla Firefox start page changed yesterday. It's cumbersome. How do I get back the start page I had previously?

    The new start page fills the whole screen. You have to bump the cursor against the top margin to reveal the bar showing the tabs and the 'X' to close in the RH corner. At the bottom the start page covers the 'start' box and the information on the bottom row. Now I can't click directly on Bookmarks - I have to click the logo and then use the sidebar to access the bookmarks. I have also lost the ability to switch between the net and the document I am working on.
    This new configuration may suit some people, but the previous one was straightforward and better for me. How do I get it back, and prevent Firefox updating it again to this version?

    Hey Revert back changes (if you don't like) via settings on right top side . Also send a related image so we gave you exact info about the settings. You can Shut automatic updates (but it may leads some issues) via
    '''option'''-> '''advance''' ->'''update''' now choose any one of the following :

  • How to remove the START/END marker ?

    Hi. At the top of the arrange page , where the bars and beats are numbered , i have these Start and End markers , which i can move about but cant get rid of. Once the song hits the end point, recording stops. I can move this further away to increase recording time, but i how can i remove it completely?
    Thanks
    Faisal

    Hey there,
    i don't think you can remove the Song End position.
    But you can extended it as you wish for it to stop at the song position you like.
    You can do that by double clicking on the right bottom of the transport window where you can add manually the Song's End position or on the bar ruler just drag it to the bar psn you want it to be .
    if you are running 7.2 you will find that under the tempo in the transport window.

  • HT5093 How do I manually set the start position.

    The 3d program do not support it (Google Sketchup Free).
    Can I open the dae file in another program and set the start position there?

    1) How do I in iBooks Author set the camera position manually.
    The documentation says: "be sure to add a camera to your object. This will be used for the default view in your iBooks Author book."
    default indicate that there are other options in the iBooks Author program.
    If this is not the case:
    2) What is the prefered program for createing 3d model with a start camera position.
    2a) More specific how do I do that in the program.
    Note that is is unlikely that any other forum can answer question 2, since this is compatibility specific issue between a 3d program and iBooks Author.

  • HT1338 how do you delete from the start up disk- message keeps saying ful

    How do you delete files off of the start up disk to make more space?

    You open a Finder window, navigate to the location with files you want to delete.  In the window, drag the file you want to delete to the Trash (waste basket) icon in the Dock, and release it there.  Periodically, click-hold (or right click) on the Trash icon and select Empty Trash, which will delete the files to free up the disk space.  (You can select more than one file at once.)
    A good place to initially look is your Downloads folder, which normally has a quick link in the sidebar of a Finder window.  Most people tend to accumulate stuff they don't need to keep there.

  • How do I speed up the start up time on my iMac?

    I have a mid 2010 iMac with the following specs:
    Processor:  3.2 GHz Intel Core i3
    Memory:  8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
    Graphics:  ATI Radeon HD 5670 512 MB
    Software:  OS X 10.9.4 (13E28)
    Hard drive: 1TB of which almost 800GB is free
    I never had any problems with speed or startup time when running mountain lion (or whatever it was that came before Mavericks) but I stupidly upgraded to Mavericks before reading about all the bugs and now my computer is mind numbingly slow when I first turn it on.  It runs ok once it starts up but the start up process has gone form less than a minute, to turn the computer on and go make a cup of coffee and it's still chugging away when I come back.  I installed an extra 4gb of ram (it came from the factory with 4gb) but that only made a small difference.  I really dont want to erase and reinstall everything so I've tried adding ram, repairing permissions and doing a p ram restart.  Does anyone have any suggestions?

    These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
    Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
    ☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
    ☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
    ☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
    For this step, the title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
              SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
    from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
    In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes.)
    Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Note the timestamps of the BOOT_TIME log messages, which refer to the times when the system was started. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the last boot time when you had the problem. Select the messages logged after the boot, during the time something abnormal was happening. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
    For example, if the problem is a slow startup taking three minutes, post the messages timestamped within three minutes   after the boot time, not before. Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the beginning of the log extract—not at the end.
    If there are long runs of repeated messages, please post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
    When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
    Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
    Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
    Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
    In the Console window, select
              DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ System Diagnostic Reports
    (not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
    There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of reports. A crash report has a name that begins with the name of the crashed process and ends in ".crash". A panic report has a name that begins with "Kernel" and ends in ".panic". Select the most recent of each. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entirecontents—the text, not a screenshot.
    I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.
    If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a crash or panic, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
    In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
    Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report—they're very long and rarely helpful.
