Terminal in OS9
My friend just asked me if there is Terminal in OS9. Is there?
Nope, closest OS9 has is the Programmer's Key, or Debugger.

I want to delete my OS9 system folder. I don't use, don't want to use and have no need to use it. I have been on OS 10 full time since the 10.1.5 days - I'm not looking back now.
I want to free up some space as this is on my laptop. I know there are other ways, removing languages etc - these have been done. I want to do this but everytime I try I get "The operation cannot be completed because item "System Folder" is required by the System." - when dragging to the trash.
I have changed the owner of the folder to my admin user - no luck. I have tried changing the name of the folder - no luck. What do I need to do? I wan't system 9 gone! Thanks to Abe, your link provided the answer I needed. Copied below for reference:
Try running the following command in the Terminal:
sudo rm -R /System\ Folder
It will ask for your password. Type it in and hit return. That should delete the OS 9 System Folder.
This was critical because no matter what I did in terms of permissions (as noted in my original post) could I delete the folder OR any of the files inside it (an old OS9 trick where deleting files inside a folder, then the folder itself often worked). -
Is there a way to convert old os9 files so OSX can use them? The only apps that will open it is Text edit and Terminal.
jimiMany document types created in OS 9 apps are openeable in OS X, depending on the OS X version.
For example, AppleWorks 6 documents are usable directly in OS X by using the OS X version of AppleWorks 6 (runs in all versions of OS X except Lion). In addition, AW6 text docs and spreadsheet docs can be opened in Pages and Numbers, respectively, in all versions of OS X.
Image files from OS 9 (jpeg, tiff, etc.) are openable by most image-capable apps in OS X.
As for a Digital Performer file, its format is probably proprietary; if that's the case, you'll need to acquire the OS X version of that app in order to open/use it in OS X.
If it's the program itself you talking about, rather than a document created by it -
No OS 9 app can be used directly in OS X, and such an app will often be reported by OS X as being a Unix executable.
In some versions of OS X (OS X 10.4 and earlier) OS 9 (9.1 minimum, 9.2.x is best) can be used as Classic in order to provide an environment in which many (but not all) OS 9 programs can be used. OS X 10.5 and later do not support Classic. -
Printing Terminated Error 5751
Hi Folks
I certainly appreciate all the great advice on the boards, I am trying to solve a problem (again) on my boss' computer. I posted on the same problem back in Janaury, Niel posted a suggestion which worked then, but does not seem to work now. Sorry for the long post, but I am trying to give all the details.
He is working in MacDraw under Classic trying to print to a Laserjet 2015. It has been printing fine since the last fix, now the problem is back. There are multiples of the same printer in the printer list, i.e HP Laserjet 2015 (0C4FID), HP Laserjet (10E602), plus more. The printer is connected via the network and I can access it via Safari which seems to find it easily. But when I go to print, it gives me "printing terminated Error 5751" message. This is regardless of the printer I attempt to use.
I've repaired permissions on both OSX and OS9, restarted Classic, restarted the machine. I've gone in to the system/extensions/ folder and looked for duplicate names to delete, and can find none or even the name of the Laserjet printer at all. A search finds no printer name anywhere.
I am gettting ready to tear out what little hair I have left, and my boss wants to print to his printer on his desk. Of course, since switching to OSX some years back now, I don't remember much about OS9 anymore, and if it was my choice, he'd be using something other than MacDraw that runs under OSX, but I don't have much of a say in the matter. I really want to solve this problem, there are still Macs in the office, but the computer guy (a PC person) wants to switch all the others but mine over to PCs, and this gives him more ammunition. Help!
Thanks for your thoughts
Ken MillerHi, Ken -
To get rid of the extra printer names, try throwing away the file named LaserWriter 8 Prefs, which can be found here - System Folder >> Preferences >> Printing Prefs >> LaserWriter 8 Prefs. This is assuming that you are using LaserWriter 8 as the printer driver; I do with my HP 4000N printer. If you are using a different driver, then look in the Printing Prefs folder or the Preferences folder for a preferences file with its name.
Once you throw away the preferences file, restart. You may need to reselect the printer in Chooser and set it up again.
Make sure there is a file named the same as the printer model in the Parsed PPD folder, which is also in the Printing Prefs folder. This file is placed there by the OS as part of the setup process for the printer.
Error 5751 does not appear in the listings for Apple error codes. This listings are probably a bit out of date, but it may mean that that error code is one generated by HP's software, and specific to that. It would not hurt to go to HP's website and see if you can get a translation for that code there. -
Tried this on the OS9 forum, but will try it here.
I've happily run OS9 and OSX 10.2 for several years. I recently tried to boot into OS9 and all that popped up was a Smiley Mac folder alternating with a Question mark folder. I can't find my OS9 disk, but have my OSX disk. I'm able to put my OSX disk in and it goes through the install process. The preferences are grey out, so I can't set my start up disk like that.
I've tried rebooting holding the option key and I get a screen with an two arrows. One pointing to the right and one that looks like a u-turn. If I hit the one that is a U-Turn the pointer starts to turn for a few seconds than stops. If I hit the straight arrow - it does nothing unless I have the OSX boot disk in - then it goes to the installation.
I'm assuming that I'm in bad shape
Next question is - If I have to reinstall OSX - can I save my files and programs. Of course I know the option to erase everything would do just that. My question is the one that allows me to save network connections saves my data and programs.Tony!
I don't know if you're thanking me, for Posting HERE, or cornelius for echoing the info, but you're welcome!
You need to create a system backup, or at least back up your critical data, ASAP!
You can use Firewire Target Disk Mode.
Insufficient available space, can cause performance issues, system corruption, and possible loss of data. As you have experienced.
Depending on Mac system usage habits, it is a general recommendation, to keep 10% to as much as 20%, of the Total capacity, available at all times.
Review the suggestions, in the documents that I have linked to below.

Is the Mac shutdown overnight, or does it run 24/7?
Have you ever run any routine Maintenance procedures?
If you turn the Mac off nightly, the Background Maintenance Tasks, are never run.
These can also be run, using a Third-Party utility, or manually using Terminal, to run the CRON Commands.
I use MacJanitor, when necessary.
INSTRUCTIONS TO RUN CRON MANUAL COMMANDS
Quit all applications/programs.
Navigate to HD > Applications > Utilities.
Double click on Terminal, to open.
At the prompt, type:
sudo periodic daily
Press Return.
Enter your Admin password when prompted, then press Return.
This will execute the daily script that is sheduled to run every night.
When completed, repeat this procedure, but change the command to:
sudo periodic weekly
This one rebuilds a database or two, and usually takes somewhat longer to complete. It is scheduled to run once a week.
Repeat again, with command:
sudo periodic monthly
Or they can all be run in one pass, which is preferable, with this command:
sudo periodic daily weekly monthly
When the tasks complete, and return to the prompt, you may quit Terminal.
Restart the Mac, and run Repair Permissions.
TO REPAIR PERMISSIONS ON THE STARTUP DISK
1.Open Disk Utility, located in Applications/Utilities, and select the startup disk in the left column.
2.Click First Aid.
3.Click Verify Disk Permissions to test permissions or Repair Disk Permissions to test and repair permissions. (I never "Verify". Just run "Repair".)
Rerun RP, until the only messages reported, are listed here Spurious Permissions Errors Using: 10.3.x, authored by Michael Conniff.
When "Repair Permissions" is complete. Quit "Disk Utility".

Reinstall on MDD boots into Terminal
I recently bought another MDD G4, the same model as the one I've owned for years . The previous owner didn't have the set of discs that came with it, and had installed Tiger on one of two internal HDs. However, I have a set that came with my computer.
As I would like to use the dual-boot capability to include OS 9, for which I have a lot of favorite programs, games, etc. I cloned the boot drive to the second drive using SuperDuper, and then used my install disc from my set to install OS 10.2.1.
On start up, I got a user log-in screen, and on logging in, I found myself in Terminal (Welcome to Darwin) which I know little about. How do I exit this (is there a command procedure?) to get to the more familiar interface? Also, I then want to install OS 9. I'm not sure if the discs in the set will do this, but I also have an OS 9.O disc and a 9.2.2 upgrade disc. And I have an OS X updater disc to 10.2.8. From there, I assume I can install my Panther disc.
But again, having OS 9.2.2 capability is what's important. And of course, how to get out of Terminal. It's all very interesting, something about Bash, and Shells, but for another day, thank you.
KeithYes, you really have to come here to get help on "old" models. I went to my local Apple store with a question about a G3 and the kid (I say the term advisedly) had almost no idea to what I was referring. I suspect my G3 was new when he was 10 years old.
I really don't know how specific the discs are. Maybe somebody else can answer that one. I don't think they go down to serial number but there may be some sub-versions in the models that you can't really detect easily. I have two cars the same year and model, but when I work on them I notice small differences such as the screws that hold on a part on one are not the same as the screws on the other. Maybe something like that except in the hardware or software.
Yes, OS9 had to be updated 9.0.4 _> 9.1 >9.2.1 -> 9.2.2 In OSX major versions (e.g., 10.1, 10.2, etc.) are basically new installs of operating system and you can jump. For example, if you have a computer running Panther that is capable of running Leopard you don't need to install Tiger, but you do have to pay for each new major version. Within a version you can (and should) use the "combo" (ugh, I always say "combination") updaters. So if you have a fresh install of Tiger and want to update it to 10.4.11 you can do it in one step with the combo updater.
You know, when I was doing more OS9 back in my G3 days I don't recall having to boot from a CD to do a fresh install of OS9. Now maybe I had some special version (this was at a large place with a site license and nobody had CDs), but I am wondering if you can get your lame version of 9.2.2 on your new computer you could maybe run your installer to get 9.0 onto the MDD. Do not boot to the new version immediately (which will not boot your computer anyway), but run all the updaters to take it to 9.2.2, then try booting from it. I'm not positive it will work but it's worth a try. If it gives you a good version of 9.2.2 you can then trash the old copy.
The drivers issue is a whole separate thing, but I've already gone through that. -
I just got a brand new core 2 duo iMac. When it starts up and shuts down there are a couple of seconds where the whole screen is black like a terminal screen is displayed.
It shows a bunch of white text dealing with the kernel and services that are starting or quitting respectively. It's really weird and very windows-esqe, kinda like the BIOS screen. The computer seems to run fine otherwise.
I've never seen a mac do this before and would like it to go directly to the normal blue start-up screen followed by the login window. Any help or info on this issue would be appreciated. Thanks to everyone. Unfortuately the Apple Tech Support guys had me do a archive install and now a fresh install of OSX after a formating. Pain in the butt, but since I had my files still on my backup drive it's all good. Just a waste of time and more time to reinstall all of my apps. If the problem isn't fixed I'll try resetting the parameter ram or whatever it's called. That's such a simple solution and it didn't cross my mind. I don't think I've had to do that since OS9!

Best way to intall OS9.2 on new HD
I just got my new HD, and I want to format and install OS9.22
on it. Then I want to drag( preserve) everything onto it just like it is on the present HD, OS9.22. I want to keep all my calendars and software and favorites, etc. It could use fresh system installed.
What is the best way to do this. I have visions of copying system files
over one by one???
What about indexing it after?
PS. it looks like my G4 can only have 2 HDs installed, is that true?
Thanks,
Confused and dazed. To format and install 9.2.2 just start from your latest 9 installer, carefully follow Apple's notes then go to http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/
Most people don't and personally I would partition any large disk before starting to use it, because that's much more flexible.
You should then have your old System Folder with all its settings, and a factory fresh new one, yes?
If the reason "It could use fresh system installed" is that there are problems, please first list them.
Otherwise boot from the new System Folder and rather than literally copying System files one by one, if you did partition the new disk drag copy the old System Folder a blank partition, then looking through the new System Folder which should have the latest versions of nothig but Apple software, work down each folder except Preferences until you get to loose files, then copy each list of loose files into the corresponding folder in the third, copied System Folder. "Except Preferences" because that's where most of your current settings are stored.
All three system Folders should now be selectable through Startup Disk Control Panel or by holding down Option at Startup…
With an unpartitioned disk, more care is needed. You should still be able to drag copy everything, but with two System Folders side by side on one disk it's a lot easier to get confused and only one can be bootable at a time - you can control which by giving each a new folder named System Store and deactivating one by moving its own System file into its own System Store, and moving the other's back out to its main System Folder. See how easy it is to get confused?
What problem do you anticipate about indexing it after? How did it get indexed before, please?
Apple's take-apart notes for early G4 state:
Hard Drive, IDE /ATA: The Power Mac G4 supports a total of three internal hard drives. It can accommodate up to two Ultra ATA drives in drive bay 3, near the rear of the computer. ATA drives are not supported in drive bay 1 or 2.
Hard Drive, Ultra2 LVD SCSI: This computer supports a total of three internal hard drives. If a unit has at least one internal Ultra2 LVD SCSI drive, an Ultra2 LVD SCSI PCI card, and a SCSI data cable, you can connect additional internal and external Ultra2 LVD SCSI devices. The unit’s SCSI data cable supports three internal SCSI drives; this cable has a built-in terminator so you don’t need to add one. You can connect external Ultra2 LVD SCSI devices to the port on the rear of the computer. If the computer came with one Ultra2 LVD SCSI drive, it’s installed in drive bay 1, near the front of the computer. If it came with two drives, the second one is installed in bay 2. If a third drive is installed, it’s in bay 3. Usually the computer uses the drive in bay 1 to start up.
Either way you must assign a SCSI ID number to every additional hard drive and the number must not conflictwith the ID number already assigned to another drive. One factory-installed drive has ID 0; a second factory-installed drive has ID 1. -
I have a relatively new Macbook Pro Retina 15" and have a Western Digital 1 TB Passport. I've been using the passport for about a year now without any problems on older Macbooks in my house. I used to be able to read and write to this drive no problem. I am using the Paragon NTFS for Mac software in order to read and write to the NTFS drive. When I navigate through the drive in Finder, if I try to create a new folder, I do not have a problem. If I try to delete that folder I just created, I get this error:
The Finder can’t complete the operation because some data in “untitled folder” can’t be read or written.
(Error code -36)
The folder has nothing in it whatsoever. I just created it. But if I go to Terminal and I run
rm -rf "untitled folder"
This works fine. Why is Terminal acting different than Finder? This does not happen on my other Macbooks. Thanks in advance.Thanx for such qucik reply!!! The pages were great, it had an answer for my problem, but unfortunately it also involved me dealing with it only on the MacIntosh HD itself, not on mounted external drive I suppose... So it didn't work they say that there is an icon in the left corner indicating locked folder - I don't see any icon on it. It says you can untick the box to unlock the folder - there is no tick to be unticked. Finally, they say that if I don't have permition or rights I cannot delete it. But how do i change permittion which already says that i can read and write in it? So everything appears to be normal only I cannot delete it. there is not even any warnig telling me I don't have enough rights, it just requires the password and after me typing it in it makes the sound of scraping paper but does nothing more. I aslo had some problems with emptying Trash after being seemingly succesful with one file and had got so far to have them appear in the Trash (no clue how this one actully got there though..) I followd the advice and emptied the Trash with Terminal. The Folder is still there but it shows 0 Kb... So far so good BUT: It is still on the external drive, so I obviously only managed to copy it into the Trash!!! Phew, innit a bit too tight to poor owners, this macbook?? I want my rights back!

Closing Terminal window tabs shrinks Terminal window height
Open a Terminal window, press Command-T to create a tab, and then Ctrl-D to close that new tab, the Terminal window height decreases by one row.
This most certainly appears to be a bug. How do I report this to Apple?I am also experiencing this problem, however if you use the Basic setting the problem doesn't exist.
I am using Novel and I have the problem. It's quite annoying.
I noticed that if you set the fontsize to 12 then this problem exhibits, however if I change the size to 11pt or 10pt (10 is the default for Basic, 12 is default for Novel) then I don't have the bug.

Report gets cancelled or terminated after eight hours
While doing load testing of reports, all of my reports got cancelled or terminated after eight hours. I bang the report server and database with 30 long running reports using RWCGI60. The rwcgi60/showmyjobs shows that all are running for 8 hours and after that boom... all gets cancelled one by one with in a five minute period. I still see the SQL session activity on database. The report server log says the server engines are crashed one after the other. I have Maxengine set to 15. When I submit 30 reports I see 15 running and 15 enqueued.
Is there any timeout parameter set on RWCGI60 where by it lost contact of database? RWCLI60 works fine and finished all reports.
Thanks and Please let me know if you further information...Hi
The timeout is a seeting in http server on which you host Reports CGI. Once that time limit is reached and no output is written, the web server would time out for that request. Reports CGI does not have any timeout parameter property.
Thanks

"Program terminated in remote system NONE: Logon failed" when adding a new table
Hello,
I set up a replication flow from a SAP ERP 6.0 EHP7 with SAP ASE 16.0 source to SAP HANA 1.0 rev 82 target
I am using a standalone SLT system NetWeaver 7.0 with DMIS 2011_1_731 (with SP 1 to 7).
I have 100 tables to replicate.
I succeeded to set up replication for 57 tables. These tables are replicating properly.
Whenever I try to add a new one (with LTRC transaction, Data Provisioning -> Start Replication), the new table is marked as 'Failed' after a little while.
When I press 'Show Error Log' button I got an obscure error message:
"Program terminated in remote system NONE: Logon failed "
I do not understand this message. I checked both on SAP ASE source and SAP HANA target. I am still able to connect against both source and target.
Can you please tell how to troubleshoot this error.
Thanks in advance,
ChristianFirst thank you for answering my questions. I really appreciate your answers.
I rechecked the documentation.

3.5.2.2 Data Transfer Jobs
This section explains the relationship between the number of data transfer jobs and the number of available background work process.
Data transfer and data transformation processing on SLT server system is accomplished by the background work processes of the underlying SAP NetWeaver ABAP application server. Each job occupies 1 background work process in the SAP LT Replication Server system. For each configuration, the parameter Data Transfer Jobs restricts the maximum number of data load job for each mass transfer ID (MT_ID). In total, a mass transfer ID (MT_ID) requires at least 4 background jobs to be available:
One monitoring job (master job)
One master controller job
At least one data load job
One additional job either for the migration objects definition, access plan calculation or to change configuration settings in the Configuration & Monitoring Dashboard
Example
If you set the parameter Data Transfer Jobs to 04 in a configuration “SCHEMA1”, a mass transfer ID 001 is assigned. As a result, the following jobs should be in the system:
1 Master controller job: /1LT/IUC_REP_CNTR_001
At most 4 parallel jobs for MT_ID 001: /1LT/IUC_LOAD_MT_001_001/~002/~003/~004
When configuring your data load or replication scenario, consider the following:
Do not define more data transfer jobs than the number of available application server background work processes. If all available background work processes are already occupied by jobs, any other job will have to wait until a free work process becomes available. This can lead to long wait times until a new activity (for example creating triggers) can start, and can also result in significantly increased latency times for data replication.
The number of dialog work processes in the source system corresponds 1:1 with the number of data transfer jobs in the SAP LT Replication Server system.
Besides the work processes allocated by the data transfer jobs you need to provide additional available work processes for controller and monitoring jobs, the migration objects definition, access plan calculation or to perform configuration changes, and so on.
Sizing for SAP LT Replication Server involves determining how many work processes are required to perform the initial load of data into the target system within an acceptable timeframe, and accomplish the change capturing and the transfer of data changes to the target system within expected latency times.
Ensure that you add enough additional work processes to allow other required SAP LT Replication Server jobs to run.
Finally, you map the number of required application server work processes to their system resource consumption (CPU, memory, disc space) using the formulas provided by the SLT Sizing Guide.
With the simple formula below, you can calculate the number of required application server work processes (WPs) on the SLT Server for each active SLT configuration.
The number of required work processes can be determined by adding
The Number of required data transfer jobs ,
plus one background work process for Central Master (Monitoring) Job (only one per system!),
plus one background work process for Master Controller Job,
plus 3-5 additional empty background work processes (recommended per configuration),
plus approx. 3 dialog work processes (recommended for each configuration).
Note: A lack of available free application server work processes can negatively affect the data load or data replication processes.
To summarize everything, the number of 'Data Transfer Jobs' must be set depending of the number of source tables, it is not the actual number of tables.
Assume that for my 100 tables I use 10 'Data Transfer Jobs' :
- The number of work processes on the SLT server would be 20. I took the simple formula of the documentation:
10 data transfer jobs ,
+ 1 background work process for Central Master (Monitoring) Job (only one per system!),
+ 1 background work process for Master Controller Job,
+ 5 additional empty background work processes (recommended per configuration),
+ 3 dialog work processes (recommended for each configuration).
- The number of dialog processes on the source server would be 10 ( equal to the number of 'Data Transfer Jobs')
Am I correct ?

Hi I encountered this error while creating a SC. All attributes for this user are maintained and the "check user" transaction does not give any error.

Error when processing your request
What has happened?
The URL http://punhjwsapsrm:8000/sap/bc/gui/sap/its/bbpsc02/! was not called due to an error.
Note
The following error text was processed in the system SSS : Internal Error
The error occurred on the application server PUNHJWSAPSRM_SSS_00 and in the work process 1 .
The termination type was: TH_RES_FREE
The ABAP call stack was:

What can I do?
If the termination type was RABAX_STATE, then you can find more information on the cause of the termination in the system SSS in transaction ST22.
If the termination type was ABORT_MESSAGE_STATE, then you can find more information on the cause of the termination on the application server PUNHJWSAPSRM_SSS_00 in transaction SM21.
If the termination type was ERROR_MESSAGE_STATE, then you can search for more information in the trace file for the work process 1 in transaction ST11 on the application server PUNHJWSAPSRM_SSS_00 . In some situations, you may also need to analyze the trace files of other work processes.
If you do not yet have a user ID, contact your system administrator.

HTTP 500 - Internal Server Error
Your SAP Internet Communication Framework TeamHi Amol,
First of all the sicf transaction is to be used only if you use the internal ITS.
Now you have to put an external breakpoint in the source code of the ABAP Program or FM you want to debug , one of these in your case :
Function: B40B_READ_TABLE of program SAPLBBP_BD_DRIVER_40B
Function: META_READ_TABLE of program SAPLBBP_BD_META_BAPIS
Form: LOCATIONS_READ of program SAPLBBP_ATTR_F4
Function: BBP_ATTR_F4_SLOC_PPOMA of program SAPLBBP_ATTR_F4
Form: STG_LOC_GET_FOR_LOCATION of program SAPLBBP_SC_APP
Form: STG_LOC_GET of program SAPLBBP_SC_APP
Form: LOCATION_STG_LOC_GET of program SAPLBBP_SC_APP
Form: USER_ATTRIBUTES_GET of program SAPLBBP_SC_APP
Then launch the transaction in IE, once the program reaches a breakpoint, you'll get the ABAP debuger in IE.
Regards.
PS: if it doesn't work, put the parameter ~generatedynpro in BBPGLOBAL service to have it applied to all BBP transactions
