Terminal is slow to open

Hi all,
I administer large number of OS X 10.4.10 servers across our organization. We are currently moving towards OD/AD integration with them. With some of them I have no problems, with others number of different issues. Not able to mount network home folders from users workstations, slow with opening files from PC workstations, etc. My guess is that there is something funky on network side, but as I'm not that familiar with it, cannot really say what causing it.
On one of the servers I have a problem every now and then when users loose their connection to it, get a spinning 'beach ball' and have to log out/restart. After their computers start up, they try to log back in, and it fails to mount their home folders. On workstations they get message about failing to log in, 'if your home folder is on SMB/AFP sharepoint - contact your administrator'.
During this time on the server, Terminal opens with only 'Last login ...etc' line in the window, after about 20-30 minutes (yes, not seconds) it will display server host name with proper prompt. Quitting and relaunching Terminal leads to the same problem, no proper prompt. Also, when opening Server Admin, all of the services are just spinning green circles, on the server itself and even on remote admin workstations. (On my laptop, I have around 20 servers in my Server Admin, and only the server, which is in that mode, displays spinning green circles without ability to display information) After being like that for a bit, server will get back to normal mode, and everybody would be able to use. It sits in this mode for some time, couple of hours or even more.
I'm a bit lost in confusion what might cause it. All of the servers that are bound to AD/OD structure are set up same way. Our network is 10.121.xxx.xxx one server that is in the same network works fine, other servers are in 192.168.xxx.xxx network, two of them are acting up, one of them is working fine (the one that works fine has DC in the same building, others don't)
If somebody has any suggestions in where to even start investigating, would very appreciate it.
Thanks all

This appears to be a problem with one or more records for your servers' hostnames via DNS. Check to be sure that all Active Directory PDCs and BDCs have A records and PTR records for their hostnames; also check the same for all Open Directory Master and Replica servers. That's a good place to start.

  • ITunes 9.0.1 slow to open!

Im just checking to see if anyone else has had problems with the latest version of iTunes 9.0.1 being slow to open. When I click on the iTunes icon, it opens quick but then the main window freezes, then I see the beach ball spinning for about 30 seconds or so then the rest of the screen "comes alive" and then I can access the entire application.
It was never this way prior to version 9. I DID download the update that was supposed to solve these issues but I have not seen any difference in performance.

You might want to check that your certificate that you made has been applied to iTunes.app
    try this code in Terminal"
    codesign -dvvvv /Application/iTunes.app
Does the name on the certificate match the one you created?

  • Adobe Reader XI is slow to open/print first file

My Adobe Reader XI slows down my computer whenever I open or print the first PDF every day.  If I open the first one, wait for the slowness, then open another PDF, it opens just fine.  Same with printing...  If I print one file, it slows my computer for a couple minutes, but if I then print it again, or print another PDF, it prints right away.
I have completely uninstalled/reinstalled Adobe Reader/Shockwave/Air/etc., and that didn't help.  I'm not sure where to look next.  Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

This can be solved by watching for a Popup balloon in the upper right corner of the Reader screen.  The balloon contains an electric lightbulb and reads "Click on Tools to convert PDF documents to Word or Excel".  Click the X within the balloon to close this popup and the Reader application will perform at a more normal speed.  Some dumb AS$ programmer's bright idea really slowed things down for a bunch of Terminal Server users (Windows 2008R2).  Next I need to figure out how to disable this "feature" from the outset.  I hope this works for others.  Cheers!

  • Macbook Air slow in opening pages

    macbookAir slow in opening pages

    Where abouts?
The actual app Pages or web pages?
might be worth checking your DNS settings in System Preferences > Network > Advanced > TCP/IP(DNS) and making sure they're correct, or you could manually put in google's own 8.8.8.8 (primary) 8.8.4.4 (Secondary)
and seeing if that makes a difference.
Could try clearing your cookies/history/saved stuff in whatever browser you're using.
if all that fails, try flushing your cache.
Open Terminal (Applications > utilities > Terminal.app )  and type in:
    dscacheutil -flushcache
hit return and maybe even try a reboot.
the other option is, you just have slow internet?
if it's pages.app, it's a case of how old is your machine? how much ram? if your hard drive ok? does it meet the system requirements?
    Hope this helps!

  • Safari Slow to Open Webpages

For some reason Safari has started to become really slow at opening web pages. I have a PC connected via Ethernet to a broadband router/hub (via ethernet over mains) and the Mac is connected via ethernet straight into the same broadand router /hub.
If I type a URL into the PC and hit return it loads MUCH quicker than if I type the same URL into Safari on my iMAC.
I have downloaded all of the updates, cleared out history and cache (for both PC and MAc to make sure they are the same) and I have uninstalled Little Snitch just in case.
Is there anything else I can try - I am new to Mac's and so finding may round some of the settings will need some newbie explanations please!
    Thanks

I have uninstalled Little Snitch just in case.
Don't uninstall LittleSnitch; it has nothing to do with this at all. Try these steps, instead:
    1. Go to Home/Library/Cookies and delete the Cookies.plist file.
    2. Go to Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari and delete the contents of that folder.
    3. Go to Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/Web Page Previews and delete the contents of that folder.
    4. If you don't want to use the Top Sites or Cover Flow features, open Terminal and paste in this command:
defaults write com.apple.Safari DebugSnapshotsUpdatePolicy -int 2
then press Enter or Return and quit Terminal
    5. Go to Home/Library/Caches/Metadata/Safari and delete the contents of that folder.
    6. Go to Home/Library/Caches/Safari and delete the contents of that folder.
    7. Go to Home/Library/Safari and delete these files (if you have them):
    Downloads.plist
    History.plist
    Form Values
    LastSession.plist
    WebpageIcons.db
Then Repair Permissions, restart Safari and see if the speed is improved.

  • Open and Save Dialogs Slow to Open and Populate

In all of my apps, the Open and Save dialogs have become very slow to open and populate since installing Snow Leopard, when the machine is connected to a Windows server. Disconnecting from the server solves the problem; reconnecting causes it to reappear.
This only happens on some of my machines, and not others
Any thoughts on what this could be. The delay is significant (about 10 seconds in all).

    Roy,
I've got the same problem. I've been charting the slowness, i.e. the time until the app responds and opens the save dialog box, and most apps hover around 2 minutes of waiting.
My home network consists of a belkin n+ router (running only with the N radio, and WPA2 security), one ethernet-connected powerbook with a USB-connected hard disk (640GB+), and my MBP connecting by wireless. The USB HD is used as a Time Machine backup disk, and the backups are extremely slow, on the order of 2 GB's per hour at most.
That said, I called up Apple Tech Support and they had me flash my PRAM, restart the machine, and Reset Safari (since that was the app I called about). These efforts, unfortunately, did not fix the issue.
I will be passing on the fact that Tech Support's efforts did not solve the problem--maybe they'll get back to me on the issue. If so, I'll post it here.

  • Report slow to open in Crystal

Some of my reports are very slow to open in Crystal Reports 2011. It can take up to a minute for a report to open.
Once the report opens, generating data is quick.
Consequently reports are slow to open in the Crystal viewer within my application as well.
It does not happen with all reports, any suggestions as to the cause or some solutions to try.
    Thank you
    Luke.

    Hi Luke,
    Moved to the SDK forum.
Any reason is you may have the Verify Database options checked on. Or it could be your report is looking for the printer in the report across your domain.
Typically though if the Verify is checked on a one minute time out happens for ODBC data sources if the DSN is not available.
    So need more info:
What version of CR Designer are you using?
What SDK and version are you using?

  • Pages on my iPad3 has become very slow to open documents after upgrading to ios7. I've clicked on a folder 5 minutes ago and am still waiting. The work-around seems to be to force-close it, but I've needed to do this many times in the last few days.

Pages on my iPad3 has become very slow to open documents after upgrading to ios7.
I posted on here about this a few weeks back and someone suggested force-closing Pages -- and that does indeed enable me to open things -- but I have had to force-close many times in the last 24 hours, which is worrying. Are there any other suggestions?
I am sometimes also finding that, when I have been writing something and then click on "documents" the screen goes blank, there is a wait of around a minute and then the same document is re-displayed, before clicking "documents" again lets me look at other documents -- which is a pain if I am trying to move between documents repeatedly. Again, words of wisdom on this would be great.
Pages under iOS6 opened quickly, and there was an immediate loss of performance when I upgraded. I am finding this very frustrating because I don't feel that the new Pages has added to the facilities I was using, but a slowness to open documents is frustrating.
    Thanks
    Mark

  • Why does my firefox start page keep opening in a foreign language, no matter how many times i have uninstalled and reinstalled the US English version? also, why is it so slow to open, if it opens at all now?

it wants me to believe it's opening in Spanish, but that is not the language that appears on the start page, looks like it might be German? also, since i have reinstalled, mozilla/firefox is extremely slow to open, if, in fact, it opens at all. if i stop the process, and then proceed to open something else via the toolbar, i.e., aol mail, etc., i get to where i need to be.

If the Google (Firefox) or Yahoo home page is in the wrong language then see:

  • Safari is slow to open and close. It also slows down other apps while running. Should I reload safari and if so, how do I do so?

Safari is slow to open and close. It also slows down other apps while it is running. How can I resolve this issue?

From the Safari menu bar, select
    Safari ▹ Preferences ▹ Extensions
Turn all extensions OFF and test. If the problem is resolved, turn extensions back ON and then disable them one or a few at a time until you find the culprit.
If you wish, you may be able to salvage the malfunctioning extension by uninstalling and reinstalling it. That will revert its settings to the defaults.
If there's no improvement, continue as follows.
From the Safari menu bar, select
Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Privacy ▹ Remove All Website Data
    and confirm. Test.

  • Open and Save Dialogs Very Slow to Open and Populate

In all of my apps, the Open and Save dialogs have become +very slow+ to open and populate since installing Snow Leapoard.
This only happens on one of my machines, and not others. (I've unmounted all connected drives, just to eliminate that possibility.)
Any thoughts on what this could be. The delay is significant (and feels like the old days of Windows, which I thought I'd left behind).

The problem now appears to have gone away. The only change I've made is that I replaced an external drive that had recently died with a new one and gave it the same name as the failed drive.
Could a the dead drive have left something behind (or failed to leave something behind) that is stumbled over (or looked for and not found) each time the file system was accessed, and that got cleaned up (or re-created) when the new drive was connected and renamed?

  • HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus N911g Devices and Printers Page Is Slow to Open

Hello, I have HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus, model N911g, installed as a wireless printer.  I have Windows 7 64-bit.  My Devices and Printers page takes over two minutes to open.  While I am waiting, if I go to Print Spooler Services and click Restart, the page opens right away.  Once the page is open, in the HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus device, I ran Troubleshooter and it took about 1/2 hour to finish, and it reported and supposedly fixed a problem in the Print Spooler service.  The assigned Port looks like a recovered port.  However, if I restart the PC and try to open Devices and Printers again, the delay is still present.  I had trouble installing the HP program including the Scan to PC functionality, because response time was so slow.  Now it's installed and working, but the HP program is quite slow to open.  The spinning circle spins and then stops, almost like it has given up opening the program. Then several minutes later the program opens or the requested action begins.

Check the document I linked below. Step 6 might be the solution you are looking for but it will not hurt to start from the top.
