Terminal opens at startup

When I start up my Imac, terminal opens.  It has been happening for over a year now.  Any ideas?
Thanks
Darren

Go to: Apple / System Preferences / Accounts / Login Items and remove it from the list of items that open automatically when you login.

  • UpGraded MacBook Hard Drive - but TERMINAL opens at StartUp!!!!

This one is really strange: I replaced a 160gb HD in my MacBook (May 2006 version) with a new Seagate 320 gb HD - by copying everything from the old 160 gb HD to the new 320 gb HD (in a Transcend SATA housing) using SuperDuper! and then put the 320 gb into the MB - perfect---
---except that when I startup I see two strange things: First- TERMINAL has started and I have a screen: hopefully this screenshot via the program InstantShot! shows:
/ScreenShots/SS-090214 at 201501-1.jpg and there is also a folder open: /ScreenShots/SS-090214 at 201514-1.jpg
If you cannot see the screenshots, then I need assistance on putting files/jpg's or other attachments in the Apple discussions --
And I don't think you're seeing anything - but basically the TERMINAL says a bunch of stuff, then WELCOME TO DARWIN and then a location to "security agent". Strange and beyond me, but when I had my 160gb HD I never had that!
Thanks for any comments including how to put a jpg file into an Apple Discussions post so that I can indicate what I'm really seeing.

Thanks for the great eye-opening remarks -- I guess I didn't realize that computers / Macs / Unix / software etc. was just so complex / sophisticated. Again, an eye-opener ---
---but glad to say that my problem doesn't seem to need major work --(fortunately!) - it turned-out that when I now started using my MacBook with the 320 gb HD there were 3 things (2 UNIX files and 1 folder) that somehow appeared in the "LOGIN AT STARTUP" section of the ACCOUNTS preference! I removed them and all is back to 100% OK!
Again - I really appreciate your reply and this opens the door to me learning a lot more about computers!

Is all that text in a non-active color of the terminal? i.e. is it the same color as new text that you type?  It may be the last activity you performed in the terminal.  If you just don't want to see the terminal every time you login  or restart, quit the terminal BEFORE you logout OR change the settings in system preferences:
Selec the menu item " > System Preferences" then select the "General " pane (top left):

How to keep finder in mountain lion from opening at startup.?

    Now you got me thinking....
One can set things up so Finder can be quit like any other application.  In Terminal:
    defaults write com.apple.finder QuitMenuItem 1
    Then relaunch the Finder.
I guess it might be possible to make a an Applescript or Automator application which runs at start up and quits the Finder.

  • The virtual machine has terminated unexpectedly during startup with exit code 1 (0x1)

    Hello All,
I came up with the error below, when I am trying to start a virtual machine from my VirtualBox. It was working fine till yesterday, and all of a sudden it's throwing this error. The only change I can think of, is of some automatic windows update which might have changed/updated the registry entries.

  • Open firmware startup disk by default

I have an iMac which by default always goes to the open firmware startup disk screen. How do I get rid of this? I have tried zapping the PRAM, reinstalling the OS and a different hard drive. There are no problems w/ the functionality of the computer or the software and there are no symptoms to say that there is anything wrong w/ the computer. Just want to get rid of having to hit enter at the firmware startup disk screen every time I turn it on. Any suggestions please.

Mark, it appears that the defauly startup mode has been changed on your Mac.
Probably the easiest way to get back to normal is using a utility. I use the free utility OnyX. In OnyX go to Parameters>Login and at the bottom of the pane you can change your Mac's default startup mode.

  • Photoshop Elements opening on startup, despite having shut it down prior to closure.

I am running Elements 13 on a MacBook Air O SX Yosemite version 10.10.
After installation I encountered the following issues.
    1)       Elements 13 Organiser application opened ok and transferred my photos from iPhoto.
    2)       Elements 13 Application opened o.k
    3)       Elements 13 Editor opened o.k
But latterly, when opening Elements 13 application after 1 second, the screen reverts to another copy of Elements 13 Organiser.
I have attempted to check the Installed files, to check if they are in the right location, cannot see any apparent issues.
Additionally on Start-UP  Elements 13 starts automatically despite having quit the programme prior to closure.
Maybe if I completely re-installed Elements 13 the problems might go away.
Your earliest response would be much appreciated.
    Kind Regards     David A Hullin

    Barbara Hi!
    Thanks for your quick response.
Sorry for the confusion regarding 2 Copies of Elements 13 Organiser.
What I intended to say is as follows:
On my Dock, after installing Elements 13, there are three adjacent Buttons for the Elements 13 Application from left to right:-
    1  Elements 13 Organiser
    2  Elements 13
    3  Elements 13 Editor
    MY ISSUES ARE:
    1  Elements Organiser  opens o.k.
    HOWEVER:
2 Elements 13      (To import work from the Elements Organiser),  the following happens:
This section of the application opens only briefly, (1.5 seconds,  headed appropriately  Elements 1  (But immediately reverts to a repeat copy of the Elements Organiser screen) which is activated by Button 1
    Button 3 Elements 13 Editor (opens) O.K.
P.S   Initially the application was working O.K
Your assistance would be greatly appreciated.
    Kind Regards
    David A Hullin

the screen reverts to another copy of Elements 13 Organiser.
What do you mean by this? There is only one copy of Elements 13 organizer installed on any mac.
I would start by deleting the preferences and the saved application states for PSE:

I am trying to update Microsoft Office 12.3.3 on my Macbook Pro, but once it is installed terminal opens. What am I supposed to enter into Terminal?

Still trying to understand.  You install one of the MS updates (most recent was 14.2.2) and after the update completes (before the installer quits) terminal opens?  Or the installer quits and then terminal opens?
And who is prompting for "Check for updates" ("get taken back" to what)?  Is this coming from office, say when you run Word?   Certianly the updater doesn't cause this prompt.

  • Why do some applications automatically open at startup

I just installed mountain lion.  I noticed that when the computer starts up microsoft windows and excel open automatically.  I have another application that does it sometimes as well.  why do some applications automatically open at startup?  How can I change this?

Quit them before shutting down the computer, and check the list of login items in the Users & Groups pane of System Preferences.

Right about the time the Apple logo shows up, both trays open.  Maybe 5 minutes later they close.
I have zapped PRAM but that did not fix it.

  • Finder window opens on startup - alternate cause

I just had this problem come up, and it took quite a lot of digging to find out why. I thought I would post the cause of my particular problem and it's solution as a reference for others who have been unsuccessful at stopping a finder window from loading at startup.
For reference, here's what I tried that didn't work:
    - Looked for the Finder listed in Preferences>Accounts>Login Items (wasn't there)
    - Deleted User>Library>Preferences>com.apple.Finder.plist, restarted the dock, restarted computer.
    - Changed background wallpaper (some said this worked for them)
I noticed in the Login Items something called "gstlauncherdaemon". As it turns out, this is part of the GimmeSomeTunes app. It causes the app to start when iTunes is launched. Well, apparently, it's also causing a Finder window to open on startup. You can disable this feature in the GimmeSomeTunes preferences. Personally I wanted to keep this feature, but couldn't stand the window. So I deleted the app and it's associated .plist file with AppZapper. The "gstlauncherdaemon" is no longer listed under Login Items and no window showed up on restart.
Hope this helps some who have been going mad over this like me. So if you've recently installed this app and are having a similar problem, it may very well be the culprit.

thanks for sharing this. I've seen a number of posts by people struggling (unsuccessfully) with a finder window opening at login. I don't know if any of them use GimmeSomeTunes but this is certainly something to consider.
