Terminal returning "permission denied"

Hello,
I am trying to use the Terminal Utility on my macbook to locate all of my music files because I think they are in various folders and want to get everything into one place.
I was told to use sudo /usr/libexec/locate.updatedb, but then it asks for my password and when I put it in it returns this:
shell-init: error retrieving current directory: getcwd: cannot access parent directories: Permission denied
shell-init: error retrieving current directory: getcwd: cannot access parent directories: Permission denied
shell-init: error retrieving current directory: getcwd: cannot access parent directories: Permission denied
Lyndsies-MacBook:~ lyndsie$
I am not an avid terminal user, so if someone can give me some instructions on how to locate all my music files into one folder I would appreciate it!
Thanks!

forget about terminal.  In the Finder, open a window to your home folder, type command-F to get a search window, then set the pull down menus to say 'kind', 'Music', 'mp3'.  This will show all the music files anywhere in your home folder, and you can select all and drag them to whatever folder you like.
I'm not sure you really want to do this, though.  Putting all your music files in one folder is a huge mess - better to let iTunes organize them in folders for you.

  • Using DB_REGISTER under cygwin returns "Permission Denied"

    I'm trying to use the DB_REGISTER flag when opening an environment but under cygwin I get a "Permission denied" error when I run two process. I run the attached test case in a cygwin shell and let it wait. When I run it the second time in a different console, I get:
    Berkeley DB 4.7.25: (May 15, 2008)

    DB_ENV->open: Permission deniedAnd here is the test case:
    #include <db.h>

          printf("DB_ENV->open: %s\n", db_strerror(ret));

        getc(stdin);
    err:
        dbenv->close(dbenv, 0);
        return 0;
    }Under Linux it works so it seems to be a cygwin/windows related problem (I'm using Windows XP).

    Hello,
    Here is the patch on top of Berkeley DB 4.7.25 to
    correct the permission problem reported. The
    change is to os/os_flock.c:
    *** os_flock.c.orig 2008-12-19 15:39:34.000000000 -0500
    --- os_flock.c 2008-12-22 10:23:08.000000000 -0500
    *** 37,43 ****
    "fileops: flock %s %s offset %lu",
    fhp->name, acquire ? "acquire": "release", (u_long)offset);
    ! fl.l_start = offset;
    fl.l_len = 1;
    fl.l_type = acquire ? F_WRLCK : F_UNLCK;
    fl.l_whence = SEEK_SET;
    --- 37,48 ----
    "fileops: flock %s %s offset %lu",
    fhp->name, acquire ? "acquire": "release", (u_long)offset);
    ! #ifdef __CYGWIN__
    ! DB_ASSERT(env, offset < (u_int64_t)INT64_MAX);
    ! fl.l_start = INT64_MAX - offset;
    ! #else
    ! fl.l_start = offset;
    ! #endif
    fl.l_len = 1;
    fl.l_type = acquire ? F_WRLCK : F_UNLCK;
    fl.l_whence = SEEK_SET;
    The issue here is Windows file locking, which works differently
    from POSIX flock semantics. On Unix/POSIX systems, file locking
    only interacts with other attempts to lock the same region of the
    file. The assumption is that all processes will follow some
    locking protocol before attempting to read/write that region
    of the file. On Windows, locking a region of a file prevents
    reads or writes (depending on the lock mode). This is already
    addressed for native Windows and needed to be addressed on
    Cygwin as well. This fix will be rolled forward into the
    Berkeley DB mainline.
    Thanks for reporting this and for providing a simple test case
    that illustrated the problem,
    Sandra

  • What can I do to create a disk image when I continue to get the prompt "permission denied"?  I have run the permission repair, restarted the computer and nothing changes.

    I want to create a disk image for important information.  I continue to get "Permission Denied" even though I have run the disk utility for repair and verify disk permissions.  Is there a solution for this?

    I had same problem as I was trying to build a windows iso following the bootcamp instructions (last evening).  I learned you cannot create a disk image at root due to changes in the operating system made by apple.  As a user (even an admin user) you can only create a disk image below root (such as in your desktop).  Any attempt to creat an image at root will return permission denied.
    The Apple Disk Utility (on three macs I have tried so far) defaults to creating an iso image at the root.  If you tell it to create the image - you immediately get a permission denied error.
    None of the iso creation instructions I have found on apple site so far speak to this.

  • Permission Denied in Terminal (Apache version check)

    I'm trying to chek the version of Apache in my system using Terminal entry: httpd ~v
    Each time it returns the statement: fopen: Permission denied
    httpd: could not open error log file /private/var/log/httpd/error_log.
    I know I have admin access to the system. What would be causing this error?

    Apache can't write its log to the default location under /var/log when it's executed with your permissions.
    Try "apachectl -v" at the command line.

    Hello I am on a macbook pro (retina IOS 9) i have installed xcodes and command line tools but codeblocks does not compile, terminal gives this message /Users/MacPc/Desktop/Untitled1: Permission denied      any one has a solution?? please...

    Back up all data before proceeding.
    This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership, permissions, and access controls to the default. If you've intentionally set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it, but you do need to follow the instructions below.
    Step 1
    If you have more than one user, and the one in question is not an administrator, then go to Step 2.
    Triple-click anywhere in the following line on this page to select it:
    sudo find ~ $TMPDIR.. -exec chflags -h nouchg,nouappnd,noschg,nosappnd {} + -exec chown -h $UID {} + -exec chmod +rw {} + -exec chmod -h -N {} + -type d -exec chmod -h +x {} + 2>&-
    Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
    ☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
    ☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
    ☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
    Paste into the Terminal window by pressing command-V. I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.
    You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
    The command may take several minutes to run, depending on how many files you have. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2 (optional)
    Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1, if you prefer not to take it, or if it doesn't solve the problem.
    Start up in Recovery mode. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
              Utilities ▹ Terminal
    from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open. In that window, type this:
    res
    Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
    Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not going to reset a password.
    Select your startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
    Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
    Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
    Select
               ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.

  • Cannot create file "/Applications/ " Permission denied.

    When installing new software Iget the following error message: "Cannot create file "/Applications/ ". Permission denied. I have used disk utilities to try to repair my permissions with no sucsess. I have also tried reinstaling the software. Any advise is appreciated.
    I am using Mac OS X Yosemite 10.10.2 and Safari 8.0.4

    You may need to rebuild permissions on your user account. To do this,boot to your Recovery partition (holding down the Command and R keys while booting) and open Terminal from the Utilities menu. In Terminal, type:  ‘resetpassword’ (without the ’s), hit return, and select the admin user. You are not going to reset your password. Click on the icon for your Macs hard drive at the top. From the drop down below it select the user account which is having issues. At the bottom of the window, you'll see an area labeled Restore Home Directory Permissions and ACLs. Click the reset button there. The process takes a few minutes. When complete, restart.

    Karan , In our case the problem is with the file: E:\oracle\MIS\sapbackup\.bdyemggv.lst'

    ORA_MIQ_DBA
    SYSTEM
    Authorizations:

    In the case of the database directory only the Administrators, SYSTEM,  and Authenticated users.

    try to run brconnect manually at OS level with user [sid]adm.
    but first, run this comand:

    set BR_TRACE = 15 ; export BR_TRACE
    you wil lhavea lot more information on what it is trying to do. I suspect that brconnect is trying to run on an application server which, obviously, does not have Oracle installed.

    Hello,
    Please check the SAP Note 113747 - Permissions for DBA tools BR*Tools and SAPDBA
    The following settings are required for calling the BRTools and SAPDBA correctly, in particular when calling the BRTools from sapgui:
    (1)
    ora<sid> and <sid>adm on DB server have a search path on /sapmnt/<SID>/exe. (All br* and sapdba are contained in this directory.)
    ora<sid> belongs to the dba group,
    <sid>adm belongs to the sapsys group,
    (2)
    <sid>adm on the database server has the rhosts entry: "+ <sid>adm".
    (3)
    The ops$<sid>adm Oracle user must be created in the DB and must have the sapdba role (not DBA!) (refer to Note 134592 for more information about the role).
    (4)
    brarchive, brbackup, brconnect, brtools have permission 4775:
    -rwsrwxr-x   ora<sid>   sapsys   ...
    These can be started by the ora<sid> or the <sid>adm OS user.

  • BRARCHIVE is run by SIDADM instead of ORASID, causing permission denied

    Hi all,
    I have gotten this error this week, while I don't remember performing any change in the configuration.
    While doing whole database backup from T-Code DB13, backup is error caused by permission error in the target (the target is disk in another directory).
    Checking the target directory with orad11, it have all the authorization needed (read, write, delete). So, chmod 775 is performed in the target dir.
    After successfully performed datafile backup, it is seen that the file was written by d11adm instead of orad11. Which is strange.
    Currently, Redo-Log backup from DB13 cannot be performed because BRARCHIVE have to delete the archive files after the backup. I think it is not a good practice to set all archive files to be owned by d11adm.
    Here is the error message:

    BR0005I BRARCHIVE terminated with errors
    We have checked SAPNote 113747, which said that:
    brarchive, brbackup, and brconnect must have sticky bit. And this is already applied in the system.
    That note also said that brarchive can be started by orad11 or d11adm.
    So looks like if this kind of problem happened, we cannot blame d11adm who run the backup.
    Please help, moreover if you can give us understanding on what has happened.
    Thank you very much for any response.

    I did a few more checks. Please confirm that the brarvchive binary is owned by orasid.
    When i run brarchive from DB13, then the process is indeed owned by sidadm
    root# ps -ef|grep brarchive
      sidadm  1835  1834  0 08:31:23 ?         0:01 brarchive -u / -jid LOG__2011...
    The logfile of the brarchive run is owned by orasid with group sapsys (exactly the same as the brarchive binary).
    -rw-r--r--   1 orasid     sapsys        1967 Apr  1 08:31 aefojufd.svd
    Could you please check this on your box? It is still almost sure, that something with the file permissions is incorrect. There could be a few other very exotic reasons, like double entries of dba/sapsys groups in the /etc/group file.
    Cheers Michael

  • "Permission denied" on sparsebundle after first Time Machine backup

    I've been using an encrypted sparsebundle for several months. Yesterday I bought a new Apple Airport Time Capsule, and created my first Time Machine backup. Today when I double-click the sparsebundle, instead of being prompted to enter my password, I receive a Warning dialog box saying "The following disk images couldn't be opened" with the sparsebundle listed next to "Permission denied." According to Get Info, my account does have Read & Write access to the sparsebundle.
    How can I get access to my 4.5 GB of encrypted data?

    Thanks for the response. In my case, when I booted into my cloned backup and ran from that, I was able to open the sparsebundle normally. Then when I returned to my original system, it too worked normally. Although I'm relieved I didn't lose my data, it's all very mystifying. It particularly concerns me that no online source seems to be able to explain the nature of the error message I received!
    I did repair permissions before posting here, to no avail.
    So that terminal command will turn your encrypted sparsebundle into an unencrypted sparsebundle, without prompting for the password? That's alarming.

    xinit /usr/bin/env ufo -- :1

    but I get very slow rendering and strange output.

    when I run those xinit commands as root I get good screens with proper outputs.
    I've tried to run the script from https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ru … _X_display
    and another script which I've used in the past
    #!/bin/bash
    xinit /dev/stdin -- :1 vt8 -ac -depth 24 <<EOF
    xrandr --output LVDS1 --mode 1400x900 -d :1
    /usr/bin/ufo
    EOF
    I have to say that I'm stuck.
    pacman -Ss xf86-video | grep installed
    gives:
    extra/xf86-video-ati 1:7.3.0-1 (xorg-drivers xorg) [installed]
    If I run the game on an established screen, there is no problem. What can I do? Is it safe to run xinit as root?
    Thanks
    EDIT SOLVED:
    Ok, so it seems I was close.  This is what works for me:
    Go to a virtual terminal, let's say vt1 and login as your user:
    xinit /usr/bin/ufo -- :1 vt1
    The command can be run from an existing session or from the vt itself. The "trick" is to do with session permissions, it's important to be logged in to the virtual terminal as a user with X permissions. This is info missing from the wiki pages.

    Thanks. Hadn't thought about that.

    Maybe. Tried to retrace my steps to figure out what I did, but because I did it at work I did everything in like five-minute-pieces, getting distracted all the time. The only thing I can think of that actually touched the folder at installation time was the "sakura" community package, though I don't believe that it would do something like that. I'll try to do it again when I'm at work though. Just to make sure.
    Thanks anyway for your input.
