Terminal Server Licensing 2003 to 2012 mixed environment - issue

We have 1 2003 Terminal Server and 1 2012 RDSH. We recently
migrated 2003 Terminal License Server to new 2012 RD Licensing Server.
On 2012 RD Licensing Server we have been instaled 20 - 2012 RDS Per Device Cal and 20 - 2003 TS Per Device Cal.
I sometimes works on Terminal
Server 2003 or 2012. And here is a problem with issued Terminal license for Device. When I Logoff from
2003 TS and then I log in to 2012 RDS - the 2012 RD Licensing Server issued new license for my computer on this same name. When I do the same in the reverse order - the 2012
RD Licensing Server issued next new license for my computer. I do this several times and now I have 10 permanent 2012 RDS license issued for this same computer with this same name, and 5 temporary 2012 RDS license issued for this same computer and 1 temporary
2003 TS for this same computer.
I have no idea how resolve this problem.
Thanks in advance for any help anyone can provide.
Lukas

  • Move Terminal server licenses to another server

We have one terminal server VM hosted in hyper v server. currently there is a problem with the hyper v server hdd and we might need to rebuild the whole server. We would like to setup a new terminal server on a new server. The existing terminal server is
windows server 2003. After I fresh setup the Windows server 2003 VM in a new server, how do I move the terminal server license to a new server? FYI, we would like to decommission the old terminal server. But we would like to do it in parallel as there are
many users are still accessing to the old terminal server.
    Thanks so much.
    Regards,
    Henry

    Hi Henry,
First you need to gather your licensing paperwork, authorization number(s), license number(s), etc. for your existing licenses.  This step is critical.
Next install RD Licensing on the replacement 2003 server, Activate it using Terminal Server Licensing (licmgr.exe), then install the TS CALs.  If you receive an error when installing the old TS CALs please contact the Clearinghouse and explain
to them you need to install the TS CALs on a new server because the old one is being decommissioned.

Once you have confirmed that the old TS CALs are installed on the replacement 2003 TS then make sure your 2003 TS is set to the correct Licensing mode (to match the type of TS CALs) and you have Specified the name of the new RD Licensing server.
You do this in Terminal Services Configuration (tscc.msc) on the replacement terminal server.
As an alternative you could install the existing TS CALs on a newer RD Licensing server such as Server 2008 R2, Server 2012, etc.  You still will need to have the authorization number(s), license number(s), etc. for the existing 2003 TS CALs.

Is there a way I can track our Terminal Server Licenses usage. For example I have bought 50 licenses, are they being used to full capacity or under used. What is the monthly maximum usage. And we have about 10 servers hosting terminal services
in our AD, do I have to generated a report for each ? Is there tool that can do this ? Windows 2008 R2 and Windows 2012 R2

    Hi,
Thank you for posting in Windows Server Forum.
For finding active session on terminal server you can use command as follow.
    query session /server:SERVER2
A user can always query the session to which the user is currently logged on. To query other sessions, the user must have Query Information access permission.

  • Windows Terminal Server Licensing Mode

    Hi all.
Anybody knows how to license a Windows Terminal Server to be used only throught SGD?. I have more than 100 users behind a SGD, and I want to export Windows applications to them.
I know that there are to kinds of Windows Terminal Server licenses. Users or Devices CAL's. If I'm using SGD, do i need a license for each users, or with one license for each SGD server is enought?.
    Thanks.

    Hi.
It's not Oracle limitation or rules. It's rules of Microsoft.

  • Terminal Server Licensing Problems with GPO Security Group License Server

    Hello,
I have two fresh installs of W2K12R2.
One is RD Session Host and the other one is the License Server. Everything is fine until I active the GPO Security Group License Server. After that the License Server gives no licenses
to die clients (we have User und Device CALs). TS Licensing Diagnostic’s shows no errors, the number of available licenses is displayed correctly, even the state of GPO Security Group License Server is correctly shown as "active" and die
Membership in the Group "RDS-Endpointserver" is "Yes". Eventlog shows no Errors. Log in on the session host is even possible, maybe because the RDS-Service is in evaluation time.
If the GPO Security Group License Server is disabled again, the server starts to serve licenses as expected.
I don’t know what I can do anymore, never had problems with exact the same setup under W2K8, but with W2K12 is the second time I notice this issue.
    Thanks for your ideas,
    Andreas

    Hi Andreas,
Thank you for posting in Windows Server Forum.
Sorry to inform but there is no official document for server 2012 related to this event, you can go through below article for reference.
You cannot use a security group to add computer accounts to the Terminal Server Computers group. You must add each computer account explicitly. To verify whether an RD Session Host server is allowed to request RDS CALs from the Remote Desktop license server,
you can use the IsSecureAccessAllowed method of Win32_TSLicenseServer class. For more details about this method, click here.
    1. License Diagnosis tool returns error "License server <computer name> cannot issue RDS CALs to the Remote Desktop Session Host Server because the 'License server security group' Group
    Policy setting is enabled."
2.Control the Issuance of RDS CALs
Note: You should only enable this policy setting when the license server is a member of a domain. You can only add computer accounts for RD Session Host servers to the RDS Endpoint Servers group when the license server is a member of a domain.
    Hope it helps!
    Thanks,

    Hi,
You can retrieve the number of days remaining in the grace period via WMI.  Instructions below:
Logon to your server as an administrator
Start--All Programs--Accessories--Right-Click on Command Prompt and choose
    Run as Administrator
    Enter the following command:
wmic /namespace:\\root\CIMV2\TerminalServices PATH Win32_TerminalServiceSetting WHERE (__CLASS !="") CALL GetGracePeriodDays

  • Running adobe acrobat on a terminal server & licensing purchase

Is it possible to run both the standard and professional versions of adobe acrobat (1 license of each) on a terminal server? Each version would be security locked down to the specific licensed user.
    Also
If you purchase adobe acrobat through licensing is it possible to purchase just one license or is there a minimum number of licenses that you can purchase? Is the better option for one license to purchase the boxed retail product?

You have a better chance to get a helpful reply if you ask in the Acrobat forum, or even at http://forums.adobe.com/community/licensing

  • Office 2013 terminal server licensing

We need to install Office 2013 Pro+ on a MS terminal server.  I've been reading around and have determined we need a volume license copy of O2013 and enough licenses for the number of desktops accessing it.  Just a couple of questions...
Does O2013 have to be installed on the client desktop?  If not, how does one install the license without installing O2013?
I have a user on a desktop in the office with O2013 installed and licensed.  This user goes home and connects to the office network/terminal server using their home PC over a VPN.  Do we need 2 licenses for this one user, one for the work PC and
one for the user's home PC?
    Thanks!

This article, and the linked PDF "Licensing brief", should help:
    http://www.microsoft.com/licensing/about-licensing/briefs/remote-desktop-services.aspx
Office does not have to be installed on a client desktop - even if you assign a license to that desktop just for the purpose of entitling Office-via-RDS at that desktop. E.g. if you used thin-clients or Linux instead of "full desktop Windows",
you can't install Office there, but if the device is used for Office-via-RDS, you must assign an Office license to that device.
You don't "install the license" - you assign a license (which is simply keeping records that you have "allocated" a license).

  • Terminal Server Licensing doesn't assign user licence

    Hi,
We've Windows Server 2008 R2 as Terminal Licensing Server, without Remote Desktop Session Host server on the network. Licensing server is member of domain and SRDLS configuration says everything green.
On Licensing Server I can see a lot of Added licences (column "Total licences") but for all of them there is 0 Issued, and a lot of clients are using RDS service. There is no any specific Terminal event logs.
How I can start troubleshooting this issue?
    Potential ideas:
    - how can I check if Terminal CALs are activated?
    - how can I check if my clients are using that wanted Terminal License server?

    Hi,
Reports are empty, there is no any user listed in report.
Issued licences (in TS Licensing console) says 0, even Total liceses is listed in two groups with X and Y licences.
What do you suggest for next step?
    Thnx

  • How to migrate DNS, DHCP Server from 2003 to 2012

    Hi all,
I have one old server running server 2003, and i need to migrate the dns and dhcp server to server 2012.
I found all the articles, there are only migrate from 2003 to 2008 or 2008 to 2012.
Is there anyway to migrate it?
    Thanks.

Really confused why the "answer" to this thread states it can't be done, when clearly it can.  This is the official approach (article dated Oct 2013):
Migrate DHCP Server to Windows Server 2012 R2
Within, you'll see that it says:
This guide provides instructions for migration of a DHCP server from a server that is running Windows Server 2003 or a later operating system to a server running Windows Server 2012 R2. Supported operating systems are listed in the following table.

  • Terminal Services licensing firewall ports

I have been searching the internet for an informative network\firewall drawing for the Terminal Services Licensing traffic when it comes to firewall ports requirements etc
Does someone have a detailed description or a (visio) drawing showing the ports required for WTS Licensing?
We have the following Citrix based Terminal Server environment:
    - Windows 2008 R2 running XenApp6
    - Clients come from internal (LAN) and external connections (Citrix Access Gateway)
    - There is a firewall between the Citrix XenApp WTS farm and the MS Terminal Services Licensing server (Win 2008 R2)
Can someone explain how the TSCAL\RDCAL "traffic" flows and the ports required from A-Z ?
    /Tord Bergset

I believe the correct random ports used for for Windows Server 2008 are 49152-65535, not 1024-65535
I am looking for a visio or something showing this...
For Citrix solutions one have no problem finding network drawing showing firewall ports etc, but fro MS WTS licensing I jsut cannot find anything showing ports required etc
Lot of designd docs\drawings regarding RDP traffic etc, but not anything for the RDCAL\TSCAL licensing traffic
    Scenario below:
Need all WTS Licensing ports listed for the solution to work for external and internal clients
