Terminal Server Session Freezes/Hangs

Hi,
Just a little background info, I have a terminal server farm running Windows 2003 R2 Enterprise behind a hardware load balancer and I am utilizing the session directory service.
The issue I am running into is users’ terminal sessions will freeze up when they reconnect to their existing session. There are two scenarios that this happens. When a user moves from one desk to another and they log into the terminal server and reconnect
to their session or after a period of inactivity their session will lock them out and then they log in. All the user gets is usually only a partial display or just the desktop backgroup and the session doesn't respond. I used to just kill their session and
have them log back in but now I have narrowed it down to the OUTLOOK.EXE process. If I log into the server they are on and kill their Outlook process their session starts to respond. I have noticed that Outlook will be utilizing 2% to 10% CPU when it is occurring.
We are running Office 2010. It seems to be random and very frustrating.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Hi,
Thanks for your posting.
According to your issue, I can let you know some solutions but before that want information from your side.
a. How many clients are logged in TS session at a time?
b. Have you tried by disabling Offloads?
   Information regarding Offloads:
   http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/951037
c. You check the performance of your server by using Performance Monitor tools and can capture logs.
   http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc749115.aspx
Please install the required hotfixes available for the issue.
1. Terminal Server and connected Terminal Services clients pause when a Terminal Services client logs on or logs off (KB 324446):
   http://support.microsoft.com/kb/324446
2. A Windows Server 2003-based or Windows Server 2008-based terminal server stops accepting new connections, and existing connections stop responding (KB 956438):
   http://support.microsoft.com/kb/956438
Might This Helps!
Thanks.

  • Terminal Server Session Management: why do we need a rdp session to take control of a terminal session?

    Hi all,
    As title, I have this question: why do we need a rdp session to take remote control of a terminal server session?
    I copied tsadmin and related file to a windows 8.1 pc and I'm able to see for every terminal server the list of users logged in, but the option "take control" is greyed out... why? is not possible to avoid this block?
    Thanks in advance

    Hello, Davide_ita.
    Also tried to use RDSM to "Remote Control" user's sessions, but in this thread
    Remote Control
    with Remote Desktop Services Manager - error Access is denied (Windows Server 2012 R2)
    I get the recommendation to use RDP or Remote Assistance.
    The quote of
    TP []:
    Hi,
    You cannot remote control a session on a 2012 R2 RDSH server using Remote Desktop Services Manager.  You need to use the RDP 8.1 mstsc.exe or the RDS gui in Server Manager on 2012 R2.  The command you would use with the RDP 8.1 client would be
    this:
    mstsc /shadow:<sessionid> /control
    -TP

  • Windows Terminal Server Session Directory

    Anybody know when Session Directory will be supported?
    We have a TS farm that uses session directory. Our Sun Rays with uttsc work fine and will redirect the users to their active session.
    No such luck with SGD pointed at the farm. The user will open a new session and not get redirected to their existing session.
    As one can imagine, this causes all sorts of problems when users leave their desks and then go home and can no longer access their existing session on the terminal server.

    Currently SGD does not support the Terminal Server Session Directory. It is however on the roadmap of SGD, but I don't know if it will be in the next release yet.

  • Flash Player hangs users entire Terminal server session

    Hi all, Firstly many thanks for reading this.
    We're running Windows Terminal Server 2008 r2 using Flash Player 11.1.102.62
    Whenever one of our users hits a flash enabled site they experience heavy session lags and even sometimes cause the session to hang until the server times out the session via group policy. This is regardless of the size of the Flash content being played (full screen content or a little ad in the corner).
    To give an Idea of the layout, the Terminal Server is situated locally to the clients (not at a remote location) which eliminates it being a broadband issue for the clients. The Terminal server is a fresh install with a single install of flash( Flash 11.1.102.62 64-bit)
    I've read through the administration guide and created a mms.cfg file. Presently it has the following entries:
    AutoUpdateDisable = 1
    FullScreenDisable = 1
    OverrideGPUValidation = 0 (this was previously set to 1 to see if it would increase performance but it didnt.)
    I dont see any options in the guide to tweak performance as such - just security related. Are there any other references to values that can be changed to increase performance?
    Any thoughts/insights would be greatly appreciated as this is causing a real headache.
    Kind Regards,
    Jon

  • 2003 Terminal Server Session Directory Clustering

    Hi everybody ;
    I have question about clustering TS Session Directory Service.
    In my environment I have four terminal server which running Windows Server 2003 R2. Now we bought two new servers and we are planning to use them for File Server with Windows Server 2008 R2. I installed Windows Server 2008 R2 to this new servers
    and i configured them for file server and clustered this two server. But i want to cluster the my terminal servers session directory service in this cluster environment. My terminal server WS2003 but cluster environment is WS2008. Is there a problem about
    this version difference ?
    Thanks.

    i don't believe so. 2003 terminal services requires at least 2x 2003 servers with the session directory service running on them to be clustered in MSCS.  2008 has a whole new session directory which will not serve 2003 remote desktop hosts

    you may want to consider upgrading your old 2003 terminal server environment to 2008 though.

  • Hide Windows Updates reminders from users on Terminal server sessions

    Windows 2008 Server - Users of the terminal server are getting reminders popping up on their sessions every 4 hours with a prompt to restart and update now, or postpone until later. How can I stop them from seeing these messages?

    I would suggest that you create a GPO for your users, possiblty a loopback as its  a TS but your choice,  and include the following settings.
    Computer Configuration – Policies – Administrative Template –Windows Components – Windows Update
    Configure Automatic Updates: Enabled;
    Allow non-administrators to receive update notifications: Disable;

  • Running word macro's in a Terminal Server session.

    I have multiple word documents that employees use. Within this document is a macro that is used to ask questions and then replace sections within the document with information entered with the macro.
    Problem is that when used in a Terminal Session (Server 2008 R2) it only updates the first page and a small section of the second page.
    When the document is used on a PC (Win 7) it runs fine and all the information supplied to the macro, is entered where it should be all the way through the document.
    I've searched the net high and low yet I cannot find any information relating to this.
    Any help would be great.

  • RDP users with Printer redirection enabled, cause Terminal Server 2008R2 to hang for about 10 seconds

    We have several 2008R2 Terminal Servers with roughly 40 users working on each of them. Everytime a user logs on or off with printer redirection enabled in his RDP client (we use the Easy print feature), all other users experience a freeze of
    10 seconds on that server. Needless to say, this behaviour of the server is not acceptable. We searched all of Google and implemented and tested every proposed solution, including the registry additions to the lanman part but all with no effect. Can anyone
    provide us with a possible solution? It would be immensely appreciated!

    Hi,
    Thank you for your posting in Windows Server Forum.
    Once user is successfully log on, can able to print the document easily?
    Which version of client OS & RDP using for your environment?
    Initially I would like you to try installing latest RDP 8.1 if you are using Windows 7 and if using Windows XP then please use RDP 7. In addition check .Net Framework 3.5 or higher installed. Apart as Bruno suggested, please check the latest driver installed
    on RDS server. Also check the Event log for any information. For more detail, refer below article.

  • Terminal Server Freezing

    I have several Terminal Servers that run Windows 2008 R2 that have been having issues recently. We just started requiring Smart Card Authentication on the server. Logon works with both username
    and password and smart card logon. The smart card is required for Exchange services. A little after we changed to this, our terminal servers have begun freezing. By "freezing", I mean that when the users log on via their Thin Clients or Remote Desktop,
    they are stuck at the "Group Policy Client is updating" screen. They are not able to log on to another terminal server (we have them all set in round robin for load
    balancing) unless we log them off. When we log into the server, we must log on via the local machine by going into XenCenter because we get stuck when trying to just remote into them. Once this begins to happen though, we are not able to log the user off. We
    can open Task Manager and click log off the user but they never get logged off. RDSM also stops reporting users logged into the servers as well. The only way we have been able to clear the users and fix the problem has been to restart the server and that logs
    off dozens of users. <o:p></o:p>
    This is an unacceptable situation here that's causing a lot of problems for our users and we tried a last ditch effort of rebuilding all of the servers. After rebuilding them all and getting
    them online. They were acting fine for a few days. Now they are starting to do the same thing as the older servers and have the same problems. I have been googling fixes for this issue for a week with no solutions working so far. Any help would be amazing
    since we are all out of ideas here. Thank you.<o:p></o:p>

    Jason...
    Make Certain that you Had the Server In "TS-Install" Mode When you Installed Acrobat. It Is In your Control Panel. I Have Pasted the MS Help File Below.
    Install Programs on a Terminal Server
    You should install the Terminal Server role service on the computer before you install any programs that you want to make available to users. If you install the Terminal Server role service on a computer that already has programs installed, some of the existing programs may not work correctly in a multiple user environment. Uninstalling and then reinstalling the affected programs may resolve these issues.
    To ensure that an application is installed correctly to work in a multiple user environment, you must put the terminal server into a special installation mode before you install the application on the terminal server. This special installation mode ensures that the correct registry entries and .ini files that are needed to support running the application in a multiple user environment are created during the installation process.
    You can put a terminal server into this special installation mode by using either of the following:
    Install Application on Terminal Server tool under Programs in Control Panel. This tool will run a wizard to help install the application.
    Change user /install command at a command prompt. You will have to start the installation of the application manually.
    After the application is installed, you must put the terminal server into execution mode before remote users begin using the application. The Install Application on Terminal Server tool will automatically put the terminal server into execution mode when it is finished running. To put the terminal server into execution mode from a command prompt, use the change user /execute command.
    Additional considerations
    Some programs may require minor setup modifications to run correctly on a terminal server.
    If you have programs that are related to each other or have dependencies on each other, you should install the programs on the same terminal server. For example, you should install Microsoft Office as a suite on the same terminal server instead of installing individual Office programs on separate terminal servers.
    You should consider installing individual programs on separate terminal servers in the following circumstances:
    The program has compatibility issues that may affect other programs.
    A single program and the number of associated users may fill server capacity.
    For more information about the change user command-line tool, see the Terminal Services Command Reference (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=89674).
    For more information about deploying programs on a terminal server, see the Terminal Server page on the Windows Server 2008 TechCenter (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=79608).

  • Error with SUNPKCS11 and Terminal Server

    I've found a problem when trying to create a SUNPKCS11 Provider through a Terminal Server session. My code is as simple as this:
    Provider pkcs11Provider = new sun.security.pkcs11.SunPKCS11(pkcs11ConfigPath);I see that it works fine in my local system, but when I run it through a Terminal Sever session, I get the ProviderException CKR_TOKEN_NOT_RECOGNIZED. The amazing thing is that if I try to do it several times, at last it works. I mean, doing that...
    Provider pkcs11Provider = null;
    while (pkcs11Provider == null) {
       try {
          pkcs11Provider = new sun.security.pkcs11.SunPKCS11(pkcs11ConfigPath);
       } catch (ProviderException e) {
          Throwable cause = e.getCause();
          if (!(cause instanceof PKCS11Exception && ((PKCS11Exception) cause).getErrorCode() == PKCS11Constants.CKR_TOKEN_NOT_RECOGNIZED)) {
             throw new TokenInicializationException(e);
    }...it finally works. It needs much more times to get it with JRE 1.6 (about 1500) than with 1.5 (about 10).
    I'm completely lost and I haven't found anything around about this. Can someone help me to avoid using this loop?

    When using NT Terminal Server, attempting to boot or shutdown Tuxedo can
    fail for semaphore errors.
    This is because NT Terminal Server performs "object decoration" for
    kernel objects that are created while in a remote session. For example,
    if you create a semaphore named foo locally, it will be called foo. But
    if you create a semaphore called foo while logged in remotely with
    session id 1, the semaphore name will be foo:1
    To be able to work with Tuxedo within a remote login window, "object
    decoration" needs to be turned off.
    SOLUTION:
    First make sure the tuxipc service is not running.
    Change directory into %TUXDIR%\bin
    Run Register
    Register libgp.dll /SYSTEM
    Run Register on all other dll's in %TUXDIR%\bin, it need be only run once.
    This will turn off "object decoration" for these dll's and remote admin
    of Tuxedo should no longer fail.

    What it can be this?

  • 1811 as a terminal server?

    I've heard that you can configure an 1811 router as a terminal server for remote console work.
    I have several of them in the lab and would love to try it out.
    Has anyone done this?
    Thanks!
    Ven

    Easy to do.. just use the AUX port (BTW, this can be done using any Cisco IOS router that has an AUX port).  For the 1811, I suggest the following (this is how I normally do it):
    ! presume you have aaa new-model configured
    aaa new-model
    ! suggest making a "none" type of method for login
    aaa authentication login my-none none
    ! configure the aux port
    line aux 0
      ! this is just a sanity setting to force a port release every 60 mins.  remove this if you want long lived
      !  terminal server sessions, or adjust as needed
    session-timeout 3600
      ! this will prevent the 1811 itself from soliciting a login on the reverse telnet session.  if you want the 1811
      !  to enforce a login (aka if you want to protect the attached device via an 1811 based login sequence),
      !  then adjust this to a different aaa login method.  In my case, I enforce login on the attached serial device
      !  and find having the IOS 1811 doing a login to be a nusiance.
    login authentication my-none
    ! subtle but important step here.. turn off the aux line "exec" processing.  if you do not do this, it will still work
    !  but when you connect, do not be surprised to find a ton of junk coming out... as if the exec is on, the anytime
    !  the attached device output.. aka inputs to the aux.. then the "exec" will try to process it like an IOS CLI command.
    no exec
    ! at minimum, one has to allow telnet (as that is really the only thing that can attach via reverse telnet)
    transport input telnet
    ! adjust this if needed, note 9600 baud is the default so it will not show up
    speed 9600
    Also suggest the following:
    ! putting this at the top of the global config will help prevent "hung" sessions.  basically if
    !  someone abruptly disconnects, within 5 mins the reverse-telnet session will be released on the
    !  1811.  aka, prevents one from having to do tedious "clear line" on the 1811 for a hung reverse-telnet
    service tcp-keepalives-in
    Once you have this in place.. do a "show line"
    1811#show line
       Tty Typ     Tx/Rx    A Modem  Roty AccO AccI   Uses   Noise  Overruns   Int
          0 CTY              -    -      -    -    -      0       0     0/0       -
          1 TTY              - inout     -    -    -      0       0     0/0       -
          5 AUX   9600/9600  -    -      -    -    -      3       0     0/0       -
    The AUX port should be line "5" on an 1811.  As such, the reverse-telnet port to use for this port is "2005" (aka 2000 + line#).  Thus do a telnet to your 1811, but change the TCP port from 23 to 2005.

  • Strange problem on CSS with MS Terminal Server

    I have a strange problem on my CSS. I suspect that this started when we upgrade from 7.30 to 7.50.
    We have 2 CSS in an box to box redundandcy. The front end is connected to VLAN 1 the usernetwork. The backend is connected to several different VLAN, each for a different purpose. One VLAN has 6 MS terminal servers. The problem that we have now is that remote sites (so sites connected via a MPLS WAN) cannot setup a terminal server session via the VIP of te Service. The users on the LAN can reach the terminal server via the VIP. The remote users can reach the individual TS by going directly to the TS but this is not why we have a CSS.
    Does anyone have encounterd this problem and how was it fixed?
    Thanks,
    Attached the config of the CSS.

    There is absolutely nothing wrong in your config.
    It is also a very straghtforward setup, so there is no reason why it should not work.
    Could you capture a 'sho summary' and verify if you have any hit on the corresponding content rule.
    Capture a 'sho serv summary' and verify your term server are up.
    Capture a sniffer trace front-end and back-end while trying to connect and see if the traffic is correct forwarded.

  • Problem with Photoshop hangs/freezing for users on a terminal server

    Dear Forum!
    I'm having some trouble with Photoshop freezing over a period of ~20 minutes when you (1.) user the eraser with special brushes and (2.) copy and paste material from a PDF to Photoshop. As you might notice by the size of this post i'm getting quite depserate over here and need some help.
    A Little background information...
    Photoshop CS6 is installed on a terminal server with ~25 Active users where 3 of them are using Photoshop.
    The operating system on the server is Windows Server 2012 R2.
    There are no additional add-ons just a plain installation of Photoshop in that matter.
    The server uses 40-60% of the memory most of the time (mostly a bit less, some times a bit more but never 100%) and 40% of the CPU.
    There's enough space free on the disc.
    The problem in detail...
    There are two occasions where the freezing has occured most of the time. After it hangs for the first time, it will happen everytime you do any of the operations over a period of ~20 minutes and it's Mutual for all users. When it freezes, the whole terminal session freezes but the program i still responding (it's not getting set to "not responding") when viewed from Another user through the task manager. Ending the process as an administrator sometimes work, although from the moment i end he proces it takes about 10-60 seconds Before the program actually Closes and the user gets back Control. The easiest thing to do most of the time is if an administrator forces them to log out.
    1. The first occasion is when you use the eraser with a brush that's not standard but manually added. The names of the brush packages used are:
    Extacy__Elemental
    KKC_Fractal
    Kornkid's_Grunge_Set
    and the problem is with all brushes inside those packages. The way i evoke the problem is the following:
         1. Start Photoshop
         2. Create new
         3. Fill the background with any color
         4. Select the eraser tool
         5. Change the brush to one of the ones mentioned above
         6. Program freezes
    2. The second scenario when the problem occurs is when the users copy something from a PDF to Photoshop. The way i evoke this is:
         1. Open a PDF
         2. Select area and copy it
         3. Open Photoshop
         4. Create new
         5. Paste into Photoshop
         6. Program freezes
    Solutions we have tried so far...
    I've been working on this for several round now and i'm not entirely sure on what exactly i have done. I will try and do the following solutions once more but i'm pretty sure that i have tried most of them.
    Update graphic card drivers.
    Resetting all Tools:
         1. Select options for a tool
         2. choose "Reset all Tools"
    Resetting presets:
         1. Hold ctrl + shift + alt while Photoshop is starting
         2. select "yes"
    Tested if it matters if i have a pen connected or not, which it doesn't.
    Removed the special brushes (but it still freezes when copy/paste from PDF)
    Removed "save in background" and "automatically save recovery information" options
    Updated to latest version.
    Turned off OpenGL
    Solutions i haven't, but will try...
    Reinstall Photoshop
    Change font preview size
         1. Go to "type"
         2. select "Font prview size"
         3. select "none"
    Delete system font cache
    Close all Adobe applications including the Creative Cloud desktop app (if installed).

    Hi Mylenium!
    Thanks for your reply but since the users work on the terminal server via remote dektop the only data sent through the network is a "Picture" of what is happening on the server. All the operations are handled on and by the server and nothing is executed on the users local machine. Also all files are stored on the server therefore the load on the network is minimum.
    We are not the first in the World to run this setup and i know that this is possible to do since i've read about others running PS like this.
    Kind Regards,
