Terminal shortcut tips?

Anyone know of a good guide to Terminal keyboard shortcuts?
For example, is there a way to select one of the directories/files from a ls listing directly through the keyboard?

  • Adobe PDF Documents - Windows Terminal Server, tips ?

    Hi,
I am looking for some tips.
We provide managed hosted servers for medium sized companies and for years have been using Adobe for the creation, manipulation and viewing of PDF's
However since all these servers are running Terminal Services we find that the display and scroll speed of any document that we edit with Adobe to be very is slow.
We can understand why this occurs, due to the fact that unlike other documents the background of the document scrolls / moves like it would for an other image but not all PDF products suffer so badly
I have reduced the default resolution of any created pdf's and this has made a significant improvement but this does not solve the problem of documents created else where.
I have tried some other pdf products and they don't seem to suffer as badly as Adobe does in this department. We don't want to stop using Adobe so hopefully I can get some tips to improve this situation.

    Bill,
    Thank you for your response.
Firstly, it does of course raise a flag of concern for users running a full copy of Adobe on their Terminal Servers. I would have thought that as long as they had sufficient licenses for all users i.e. 50 Adobe user licenses for 50 Terminal Server users they would be above board, but I will check up on this for them and if this is the case well that answers my question perfectly, they will have to change products.
I also understand that there are many other converters around, we have tried several but would prefer to stay with Adobe. We don't like to support multiple products and have been supporting Adobe now for probably over a decade.
Lastly the problem is not only for Acrobat Professional but also even just for the Reader. You see when you display an Adobe "Document" it is actually and image and therefore scroll speeds on a Terminal Server are agonisingly slow due to the "white" background of the document. Other products as we both have mentioned seem to have gotten "around" this some how and I am not quite sure how.
I really don't expect to find a solution to this problem, I thought I would bring it up on the forums in case I have missed something before we have to move to a different PDF document application.

  • Terminal shortcut

    Hi,
I'm new to the Openbox scene and have started using it because it is lightweight and fast. I am making the transition from Gnome. I would like to do the following with my Openbox.
Bind the numpad keys such that each number from 1-6 either
    A)Opens a new terminal
B)If I've already fired a terminal using say 4 and have minimized it to check out some application, hitting 4 will open the SAME terminal window.
I don't want to hit ctrl+alt+F(n) buttons to shift to a new tty window. I want a smaller terminal wherever I am currently working.

    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ur … in_Openbox
    http://openbox.org/wiki/Help:Bindings
Well, It's in the wiki. With a little tweak you probably can make it works as you like. Read it carefully, it's simple once you understand it.

The only way I've found to move from tab to tab is ⌘-shift--> and ⌘-shift-<-

For gtk-2 apps add this in ~/.gtkrc-2.0
    binding "NoKeyboardNavigation" {
    unbind "<shift>F10"
    class * binding "NoKeyboardNavigation"
For gtk-3 apps like gnome-terminal and nautilus I created a new file: ~/.config/gtk-3.0/gtk.css
    @binding-set NoKeyboardNavigation {
    unbind "<shift>F10"
    gtk-key-bindings: NoKeyboardNavigation
[edit]I did have to close _all_ terminal windows before these changes were in effect.[/edit]
Worked beautifully for me. This problem has been haunted me for years until somebody point me to this thread recently, thank you very much.
Well, you can't be faulted for trying to disable this with the general settings facilities. The point of GNOME is an integrated environment. If that is the only solution, it is an oversight on the part of the GNOME devs in terms of said integration.

  • Any Tips for editing Live Event 2 camera shoot?

I need to quickly edit a 2 DV camera recording of a live multi-scene performance (duration of 90 minutes), with audio additionally recorded on a good quality remote mic.
I have used FCE for some time, but not for several months. I have managed to forget many of the lessons learnt through trial and error, as well as by reading Tom wolsky's FCE Editing Workshop! So shortcut tips would be very helpful.
I am also using FCE 3.5 for the first time after my upgrade.
    1
I want to make a safety copy of the synced rushes, as well as keeping the original camera sound recording as a back-up guide track.
    2
I am worried about making sure I am working with Master clips, so that when I edit I don't mess up any of the source material. I am a little confused.
    3
I would appreciate anyone with any suggestions or tips for the best edit process, and any warnings or other guidance. Speed is of essence. (ie there is no budget).
    4
I am considering making separate sequences for each scene (14 scenes in all of varying length and complexity). Is this advisable rather than creating one programme length sequence?
    5
I am considering making the audio into one mono track for simplicity, as the auditorium acoustics have "mixed up" the sound, with little stereo separation. Should I then duplicate the track to build the sound quality at the end?
Any other general Tips always welcome.
Thank you in advance. I appreciate all the unsung contributors to this group.
    Freesh

I am a pretty good source for basic sound info - you can email me if you like
    [email protected]
you are right about the link - I am sorry - i checked the website before I typed the link in too! A blond moment
A low shelf filter - as included in FCE and soundtrack cuts the bottom off a soundmix. 20hz is a low frequency - not many speaker systems can reproduce this frequency, and most speaker systems can't even get to 40hz - even you high fi system or speakers which say they may be able too present sound for 20hz to 20khz - well unless you have spent an aweful lot of money and have a sub bass speaker the size of a car probably may only go down to 40hz, and the production of any 20hz sounds is more likely a feeling - a psychoacousticc effect. The thing about cutting off the bass is that practically it can make the recording sound less muddy, and you can make the recording sound louder. Most recordings for CD play have the bass started to roll of pretty heavily at 40hz and nothing present at 20hz... theirs this thing called narquist theory which talks about frequency responce - but it is this math heavy thing - so basically cut out a good amount of the sub bass. A low shelf filter does this and If you want to be conservative cut below 20hz, and if you want to be real give it a good cut below 35hz.
Now I was sure that their was a mac version of that monofilter that I saw on the web page - I have a PC and do most of my audio work on a PC as that is what I have used the most. If you can get the mono filter work it will make the bottom end sound much better - more natural - less clicky and perhaps abnoxious.... those of us who like trip hop are always striving to get a nice warm bass that represents itself well on a range of speakers. something smooth - it is a bit of a trick - monofilter is one of those tricks.
If you put the bass in mono (below 250hz ish) and keep the phase right speakers find it easier to work with the signal. Also stereo bass is not something that translates well on speakers... Bass tends to just flood the room where as the more mid and trebbly sounds give the audio a feeling of distance and space and left and right. The monofilter has a bass compression/limiting and phase correction built itno it, and implimented on a slider called 'trim'. Listen to your recording on good speakers and probably just bring the trim down a touch (my guess)... as complex as it sounds the monofilter is very easy to use, and is super clever. Now I thought that nugen had a mac audio unit plugin - that is a pity if they don't and kind of makes my advice seem irelevant unless you are prepared to download an application that can use VST's.
    Amy
be careful using an eq as most eq's disrupt the phase of the signal and can reek havok on live recordings. but do give it a low shelf filter at least below -20 but probably below -40 to -80 for practicalitys sake
This is a bit over my head, I am afraid. Do you know a source of basic info for sound recording to help explain such things? It could be a book or an online resource?
lol, what i meant was 20hz or 40 too 80hz - their is a low shelf filter in soundtrack that works well - I am talking about cutting off the low frequency bits of the recording here. Nugen audio has a little pdf that comes out with the monofilter talking about bass signals... I know it is geared towards music and perhaps music that you want to have a nice bass feel - however it translates to the real world too - You will be suprised at how great your audio will sound if you cut off a chunk of the sub bass, and put the low bass in mono.
then you could look at exciting the signal - but that is another story....

  • XFCE terminal opens in background

What I mean by background is usually I just click the terminal shortcut and start typing.  Now I have to click in the window first.  This also happens with the file manager shortcut.  This is a regression although I'm not sure what update caused it.  The problem appears to be with the "exo-open" program that the shortcuts in the quickbar (and also with the "terminal emulator" and "file manager" shortcuts in the Applications menu.)  The "exo-open" program opens whatever terminal or file manager you have set as default.
If I go down to system > Xfce Terminal or Thunar file manager which opens those programs directly I don't have this problem.  They open in the foreground.  The quickbar "exo-open" shortcuts used to do that same.  I'm wondering what changed.
    Last edited by weirddan455 (2015-03-21 00:36:48)

Nevermind found the regression.  Looks like exo is its own package and was just updated two days ago.  Downgraded from exo-0.10.4-1 to exo-0.10.3-2 and the problem went away.
EDIT:  And bug report opened https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/44282
Not sure whether this should also be reported upstream.

  • Almost Three Year Old Superdrive Problem Fixed

The year was 2007. I was just finishing up my last year in film school when all of the sudden the Superdrive in my 17" Flat-Panel iLamp failed me. I could not read DVD's but thankfully I could still read and write CD's!
That DVD issue really bummed me out though. I mean - I was pretty flippin' mad that my Superdrive just borked after installing the latest 10.4.x update AND there was no support. Applecare was a distant memory and community support was non-existant. Can you imagine? ... the scores of Apple PPC users who were suddenly shopping for external DVD-R drives! And I was in film school! I couldn't burn my final cut to DVD... nor could I make copies to show my friends!
Well, that was a long time ago. I got over it. I burned CD's (yes, I still use CD's) and I bought flash drives and external hard drives to alleviate my storage and media issues. DVD's and my iLamp just did not get along so I really never bothered to pair the two up again.
That is... until one day, I erased OSX Tiger from my internal hard drive and in its place went Xubuntu 9.10. After configuring the new OS to my liking for a few days, learning new and interesting things about Linux on my fledgling PowerPC computer, I had a notion - it was like a whistling, distant wind - the softest voice calling back from those days of old when hardware just worked. I was moved to act - I was going to try a DVD in the Superdrive once more.
What once was the eject button on my keyboard in OSX is now just an ordinary button in Xubuntu, so I had to go to the terminal and type at the $ prompt: "sudo eject /media/cdrom0/"
My Superdrive went flying open and closed within 3 seconds. I had to make this fast. With an uncanny agility and wit - like Indiana Jones - I repeated the command at the Terminal and tipped a random DVD from film school into the tray of the Superdrive. My iLamp ate the DVD (which looks so cute) and it paused to think about what it had done for a moment. I could tell it hadn't quite made up its mind about what to do so I opened up VLC Media Player and went to "Open Disk..." I set my disk drive to //media/cdrom0/ and I hit the "Play" button in the "Open Disk..." window. My Superdrive started to make a whirling sound and suddenly - I kid you not - the DVD menu appeared.
I played a DVD in my Superdrive for the first time in almost 2 & 1/2 years.
Now I am not going to get into a full-blown rant on the Apple Discussion boards but I think what happened about 3 years ago was a very telling event. I think there was certainly a software conflict in PPCs or iMacs with these particular Superdrives and Apple neglected to fix it. I understand that the birth of the Mactel was a very exciting time for Apple back then but I was an Apple customer too. I was disappointed that PPC users were overlooked but now I feel better that I was able to get my Superdrive back thanks to Linux.

  • Ultra 2 fails to POST, no OBP

I've been given an ultra 2 to get going and can't see it booting at all.
It's connected via serial A to a terminal which I think I've configured correctly 9600 8N1, but I don't see anything going to the screen.
I've also tried using an Ultra 5 as the terminal using
tip hardwire, but still no indication that the ultra 2 fires up (apart from PSU fans and 'on' light.
Can anyone suggest what to look at next, please?

    Hello,
reseat the CPU(s), memory modules (installed in groups of 4) and s-bus cards (you might even remove all cards).
Attach a Sun keyboard (from the Ultra 5) and review the LEDs (-> Sun Ultra 2 Series Service Manual, Chapter 3). Try to reset to default values with STOP-N.
Sometimes a bad NVRAM can cause this behaviour.

  • Better navigation with keyboard

I'm a developer and basically use a keyboard and it's shortcuts. I want to see better support of keyboard navigation e.g. navigation through contacts, recent chats, typing is chats, comming back to recents and so on.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

As a developer, you may know that keyboard shortcut tips is usually shown in the menu after the feature  you want. All this is possible using the keyboard today, if one single Skype window is open, and focused, (in split mode atleast, you do run in split mode?) Providing that the focus cursor in chat windows are fixed.

  • Question about spinning ball issues and OS reinstall.

I have a late 2008 white MacBook running Lion.  A while back I was having problems with the spinning beach ball appearing anytime I tried to change between apps or websites.  I had tried the command+r on bootup, terminal, passwordreset tip to repair the permissions and ACLs.  It fixed the issue for a day or two, but that is all.  I ended up making the decision to back up my information and reinstall the software.  Somehow after the reinstall when I went to restore my data I ended up with two separate user accounts (one was the backup).  It really is a pain in the butt to have to switch back and forth between accounts when I need to look for an old file.
Anyway, I am having the same problem again.  I never had an issue with my MacBook until I installed Lion.  I've gone into the boot menu twice so far today to repair the permissions and ACLs and now I need to do it again.  I want to try another OS reinstall, but I was wondering if anyone knew of a way to merge the two user accounts first so that I don't end up with two or three accounts after everything is said and done.  I've tried to figure it out myself, but I've not had much luck.

Yeah, I've used the repair utility in the recovery menu.  Sometimes when I repair the disk and run it a couple of times I find that the second time there will be even more errors than before.
That sounds like your doing repair permissions. There are certain permissions that will always show when you repair permissions, and are not an error. See this Apple note listing them.
A repair disk, which is different than repairing permissions, should not yield any error messages. If it does, you have an issue(s) that needs to be fixed. You should go back and do a repair disk. It should give you some statistics then tell you everything is OK, or give you error message(s).
Part of your spinning beach ball problem may be your 2GB of memory. Consider upgrading using either OWC or Crucial memory, both which work well in macs.  A 4GB upgrade (2 x 2GB) can run $20 to $60.

  • FM9: Limited Size of Structure View Panel?

    Hi,
I'm using FM 9 on a workstation with two 22" monitors that are rotated 90 deg (portrait orientation). When I try to resize the structure view panel to fill the right monitor (as I could with FM7.2 and FM8) I can drag it to only about 40% of the screen.
Furthermore, there seems to be no way to fully expand this as with FM7.2 and FM8.
Is there any way to further resize the structure panel?
    Thanks,
    Matt
    EDIT: I'm using FMV9 V255

I have done a significant amount of research and found surprisingly little information on the interwebs about this particular issue. I have learned to work around it (as described below), but if this is all that's keeping you from moving to FM9, I would HIGHLY recommend opening a support case with Adobe. (Unless RJ reads these boards and can do some "evangelizing" back to the devs on our behalf...?)
While I do hate the gnarly refresh problems that I have experienced within the structure view since first transferring all of our docs from unstructured to structured back when FM7 was first released, I have found that FM9 has brought much more flexibility for creating a viable and workable option. I have found that (for me) one portrait and one landscape monitor gives me the most flexibility. My left monitor is landscape, and my FrameMaker window is maximized on that desktop only. It holds my structure view (docked to the right) as well as my element list (docked directly to the left of that) and then my other pods (including my book pod) docked in two columns to the left of that. I then "undock" the document window and move it over to the right monitor (which is portrait) and maximize it.
(Quick Windows keyboard shortcut tip: if you're on Windows 7 or Vista, try holding the START button on your keyboard and using the arrow keys to maximize/de-maximize windows as well as move them left and right...even between monitors.)
Good luck finding a solution...but I hate the thought that this is the only thing keeping you from using FM9...I really do find it to be much more functional and stable than FM8, especially in a structured environment.

  • TightVNC - Can't open programs on remote session

    Hi All,
I'm a Linux newbie and have a problem I can't seem to solve. The other day I installed tightvnc and have a server which runs on startup. I have added the following line to /etc/inittab:
    vn:35:once:sudo su - brian -c "vncserver :1 -name Brian -depth 24 -geometry 1280x600"
I also have the following in my xstartup file
    #!/bin/sh
    #xrdb $HOME/.Xresources
    #xsetroot -solid grey
    #xterm -geometry 80x24+10+10 -ls -title "$VNCDESKTOP Desktop" &
    #twm &
    xhost +localhost &
    exec startxfce4 &
I am using UltraVNC on Windows 7 to remote into my arch box and I manage to get the XFCE4 desktop. The problem lies in trying to open programs on my remote session. If I click on the terminal shortcut, nothing happens. Same with Firefox etc.. I attempted to right click then execute and still no go.
However, I am able to click the filesystem icon and it will open. Also, I can click on logoff and shutdown no problems.
    Any ideas?

I use tightvnc as well, but I start it a bit differently (I don't think this is your problem).  Have you seen the tightvnc wiki article?  I updated it a while ago with the method that I use.
Anyway, I don't think the & mark is needed in your ~/.vnc/xstartup
    $ cat ~/.vnc/xstartup
    #!/bin/sh
    xrdb $HOME/.Xresources
    export XKL_XMODMAP_DISABLE=1
    #exec ck-launch-session startxfce4
