Terminal window always opening at start-up?

My apologies if this is not the most appropriate place to post my questions.
Recently, I've been getting frequent messages that my start up disk is almost full. I've emptied the trash and will soon be burning some of my iPhoto albums onto disk. I'm very hopeful that will help. (Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.)
However, the bigger reason for my post is that the terminal window has started opening automatically every time I start up.
This is what the window says:
Terminal 80 x 24
-X print help on non-standard options
-ea[:<packagename>...|:<classname>]
-enableassertions[:<packagename>...|:<classname>]
enable assertions
-da[:<packagename>...|:<classname>]

-dsa | -disablesystemassertions

I have NO idea what any of this means. Would someone please tell me what's going on with my Macbook and what to do about it? Thank you so much.

If so, then carry on moving what you can.
it's worth quickly checking that the numbers make sense, and your shortage isn't due some file you can't see.

Whether I am starting up or restarting, when I login then a finder window always opens on the desktop. Why? Is this now normal behavior for the finder? Is there a way to stop it?

do you have anything at all in your login items? sometimes other apps will open a finder window like that. see this thread for example

  • Installed evernote web clipper and now evernote windows always open upon start up

Have installed the Evernote webclipper and now when I open Firefox it opens my home page but then immediately opens at least one if not more Evernote windows. I have uninstalled and reinstalled Firefox. I have disabled and reinstalled the web clipper to no avail.
The problem started after I had to reinstall Firefox and the search engine Delta Search came attached to that. Delta appears to be gone but I can't seem to resolve this. If I disable the web cliper add on Fire Fox works fine. Previously I had no problem. I also have downloaded the Evernote web clipper to my Chrome browser and it works fine. Any suggestions would be most appreciated.

''' ... I had to reinstall Firefox and the search engine Delta Search came attached to that ... '''
Where did you download Firefox from? <br />
When you download Firefox directly from Mozilla you don't that Delta Search stuff or other unwanted programs or add-ons.
Please download Firefox from here: <br />
    http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all.html
Then uninstall what you now have and install the official version.
Then see if that issue with Web Clipper is fixed.

  • Opening a new terminal window always launches X11

I did an update from Tiger to Leopard yesterday and while most things are fine, I have a peculiar problem, that every time I open terminal, it automatically launches X11 (the terminal window shows xset as the running application in the title bar). Annoyingly, the focus switches to X11 when it starts, too. I can quit X11, but opening a new window or tab in terminal will launch it again.
    Sequence of events:
    1. Machine had X11 installed under Tiger.
    2. Ran the Leopard update without installing the dev tools package (so as far as I understand, a new X11 wasn't installed during the process). At this point, the problem was present
    3. Installed dev tools - problem persists.
    4. Ran update to 10.5.2.
    5. Got the x11 2.1.4 package from here (http://trac.macosforge.org/projects/xquartz/wiki/X112.1.4) and ran the installer.
But I still have the problem. (In case you're wondering, there's no startup command specified in the Terminal settings, either. It should just start up running bash). Any ideas?

Yes, thanks - sorry I misremembered where the X11 install came from originally. Anyway, what's in my .profile is the command to run fink's /sw/bin/init.sh, which was adding the old X11 directory to my PATH variable. I still don't know why exactly that was making x11 launch every time I opened a terminal window, but I do have it fixed now.
As an aside, you will probably have to uninstall Fink and install the source and build another one. Last I looked there was no binary for Leopard. If you have Tiger version of Xcode Tools, you will also have to remove that, using the supplied script and install the new, Leopard-friendly 3.0.
Also, if you were using Darwin, that too is finito.

  • Finder Window is always open upon start up of MBP.

    Hello:
Just bought a new MBP 2.2Ghz C2D 15.4. running Leopard.
Each time I turn on the laptop. The finder window is open to my home folder.
What could be the cause of this and is there a way to correct it?
    Thanks!

Do you mean that finder is open on your dock, and if you click on it, you get the window with your home folder? That's the way mine works too--I just assumed it was supposed to be that way.
Or am I misunderstanding your question?

  • How do I make Finder windows always open in new windows?

Subject says it all - there used to be a preference for this in Finder's preferences, but it was apparently removed from Mavericks. I'm getting tired of having to right-click to open each new folder, and I adamantly refuse to allow a Finder window to represent anything more than one folder.

The default behaviour in Mavericks is to open folders in a new tab in an existing window, however this can be changed.
Unfortunately, it's not that simple. There's a very long topic on this change in Mavericks. Currently, there are only two ways to get Mavericks to do what the OP is looking for. That is, to have nested folders open in their own folder window instead of taking over the same open window when you double click it.
    1) Hold down the option key while double clicking the folder.
2). If you hide all of the extraneous stuff (top and side bars) by pressing Command+Option+T, then nested folders will automatically open in their own folder window without having to hold any modifier key down. But the bars must be hidden on every subfolder in order for that work. Any folder with either the top bar, side bar or both showing will always open the nested folder in the same folder window instead of spawning its own.

  • Preferences window always opens after boot.

After working on my new iMac for a couple of days, I now notice that every time I switch on the Mac, when it presents the desktop, it always opens the preferences window.
This doesn't happen after the Mac is simply woken from sleep.
It's not a big deal, but maybe it's an indication that something needs my attention.
    Thanks,

  • New window always open in background

    Hello
I've set safari to be assigned a specific space number in Spaces (in practice, #2)
When i click an hyperlink in an application, (for example in mail ) it goes to the specified Space (Space #2) but then always open in the background of safari. (I don't see the window and have to look for it)
Does everyone have the same behavior ?
How have it open in the foreground ?

I think this is a bug , but it is now cleared.
I've played with safari preferences and revert to what i prefer
(In Safari preference, under Tabs DON'T choose "Select tabs and windows as they are created")
    Played also with Spaces assignations.
    Closed Safari and relaunched
And now i get new windows in the front. Go figure...

  • Finder Windows always open new windows when clicking subfolders

since i upgraded to 10.5.6, my finder windows only open new windows when I click on a subfolder. this is no matter what I do with the setting in preferences.
Also, my finder windows no longer display the side bars with folder icons.
I searched my library (and whole computer) for the finder preferences .plist file and can't find it. (was going to delete it and re-create it).
    Any ideas here?

    Thanks for the star.
The default of Finder’s Find will not search that folder, but you can change the pulldown menu just beneath where it says Search, from Kind to System files by selecting Other from that menu and then scroll down the next window and check the box next to System files. You’ll then need to change the pulldown menu next to that to “include” instead of “don’t include.”
The next time you do a search using Find, that pulldown menu will have System files as an option, if you think you might want to search for something in your home folder.

  • CD drive always opens on start up

    Hi
I have a G4 Sawtooth OS 9.2.1. With an M7803 Mac keyboard. Works fine, except that the CD drive ALWAYS opens when I boot up, and I have to close it manually. Happens with or without extensions on/off ?

    Hi, GoneToLunch -
    Welcome to Apple's Discussions.
That model Mac (as well as many others) is hardwired with a hardware startup instruction - if the mouse button is held down from the beginning of booting, it instructs the Mac to eject all removable media; effectively it instructs all drives capable of ejecting to do so regardless of whether there is anything in the drive.
If an attached USB device happens to send a signal which the Mac interprets as a mouse-down signal, that commad is sent to all such drives.
The culprit can be most anything USB, including any device, hub, or even the extension cable furnished with some G4's for use with the keyboard. Items which have been reported most often as causing this are an iMate adapter, a dongle, and a digitizing tablet.
The only way to find out which item is causing it is to test by trial and error - disconnect all USB stuff except keyboard and mouse, then test; add one or two usual items back in, test again. When the problem recurs, you'll know it was the last item reconnected.
Sometimes the offender can be prevented from causing this problem by isolating it, via a self-powered USB hub. Sometimes a reconfiguration of the USB connection scheme will do it, such as by using a different port for the offender. Sometimes nothing will help, and it becomes an inconvenience that must be tolerated if the device is needed.
Relatedly, perhaps, this Apple KBase article recommends that not much at all be connected to a keyboard's ports -

  • Power button shutdown choice window always open

I turned off my MacBook Pro using the power button after running Migration Assistant transferring user profile from another Mac via ethernet. The migration stalled. I turned off the new MacBook Pro and now, after it starts up normally, the window that you get when you press the power button that gives you the option to Restart, Sleep, Cancel or Shut down is always on. It won't cancel, but selecting any other option and starting up again the window comes back up.
The button itself still functions and doesn't feel stuck at all. I have erased the HD and reinstalled OS, but window to shutdown keeps coming up

    A few more informations
My macbook felt a few times on the floor, once on the corner where the power button is located (...), but it was a few months, or a few years ago, and it didn't show the power button's problem before today
Since a few weeks, my trackpad stopped clicking
My battery says since a year or more "service battery", so it could may be battery-related ?
....Yeah, this Macbook is kind of screwed, but I'd like to keep it alive

  • ITunes Tutorials Window Keeps Opening Upon Start Up

There is no option on that window to never show up again. I went through all of the iTunes settings, preferences and other options but I could not find any sort of check box or anything to have the tutorials not show up upon iTunes start up.
How do I keep this window from popping up?

That seems to have fixed it!
The first time I quit and restarted iTunes, the tutorial window did come up again without a Show at startup box near the bottom. I thought your suggestion hadn't worked so I quit iTunes again. Then, upon a second restart, the tutorial window didn't show up at all. So I guess it is fixed then. No window at all was ultimately what I wanted.
