Terminal window blinking cursor will not accept keyboard entry

Have SunBlade100 w/ Solaris8.
This is probably a dumb beginner question...
When I enter certain commands at the terminal window - in this particular case
# cat /dev/cua/a
and I hit <return> the cursor skips to the next line, and
continues blinking , and will not accept any keyboard entries.
1. What is the significance of this? Is the cursor waiting further action, and if so, what?
2. How do I get back to the prompt?
3. Under this condition, is it safe to exit the terminal window by closing from the Window menu? (I can't type "exit" because the cursor won't accept keyboard entries, and Help for "closing the terminal" warns against closing from the Window menu because any background processes will not be terminated (and this may cause problems).
Thanks in advance for any info on this.

Thanks again for the info. <control>+C was exactly what I was looking for. It's coming back to me now-- the last time I had contact w/ UNIX was back in '85 at UC Berkeley (no GUI's back then!).
I'm assuming that <control>+C is a graceful (i.e. relatively harmless way to exit the command.

got the toshiba recovery disks today (2).  sorry but i'm still having trouble with this process.
    steps to recovery
    1. place the disc into the drive - Toshiba mini starter notebook does not have a drive.
    2. power up the computer while holding down the "C" key
release the "C" key when the screen reads Toshiba
    3. the computer will format the hard drive and install the factory image.  follow all instruction on the screen
    4. Once the process is complete remove the recovery media and press any key to restart your computer.
I went out and purchase a Male to Male connector to transfer files.  Got one file in back of hard drive that has cd/rom drive and one on side of mini notebook.  Press and held down "0" to get to boot menu.  There is no choice to select, DVD drive or Flash Drive to highlight so that either one will know who to communicate with to make the
transfer. (ex: transfer recovery mode disks from d drive to c: drive on mini notebook).
upon inserting Recovery disk in d: drive; screen pops up that says AutoPlay open folder to view files from DVD drive E removable disk  instead of getting selection here to transfer files on d drive to c:mini notebook.
Do you know what the problem is?  please help if you can...I will be waiting.
    thanks fixmeup

  • T30 Hard drive upgrade failure - blinking cursor - will not progress

I am having difficulty upgrading the hard drive on my Thinkpad T30.
I am trying to upgrade a 40GB HD to a 250GB HD.  (New Drive is Western Digital Scorpio WD 2500B EVE)
I have used the Western Digital Lifeguard Tools to clone the drive.  Unfortunately when I insert the new drive into the computer, the startup stops and sits at the blinking cursor.
I have used the PC Tools from Lenovo to test everything.
I have used Western Digital Lifeguard Tools to check the Hard Drive.
I have updated my Bios and the embedded controller program.
When I start up the computer and press F1 to enter the Bios, the plus sign shows beside the Hard Drive.  I understand this means that the Bios recognizes the Hard Drive.
I have entered setup to choose the hard drive as the boot device, but the computer still hangs at the blinking cursor.
When the new hard drive is attached to the computer by usb in an external case it shows that the contents of the old drive are copied onto the new drive.
What do I do now to fix this and get the computer to boot from the new drive?

using lion 10.7.4, can`t login at login screen as administrator or root user, both properly enabled. the option other will not take the proper entry. it will accept the standard user login.

Try resetting administrator password or resetting home folder ACL's for root user.

  • Aperture does not accept keyboard entry

When I need to enter information by keyboard, Aperture does not see the letters or keys being typed.  All other applications on my iMac see the keyboard strokes with no issue.
Never mind.  It seems to apply mainly to text entry when exporting a picture.  When you first open up the "Export" dialogue box, the text entry doesn't work.  If you click anywhere within the box and then in one of the text entry fields, it works.
    Sorry to bother everybody.

I have had the same problem with Firefox in Ubuntu. However, a simple solution I use is to go to System->Preferences->Keyboard and type in some characters into the 'Type to test settings' edit box. This will bring back the ability to type characters into Firefox once again.

  • Re: g6t-2000 loading circle next to cursor will not stop blinking

I have the same problem.I got a blinking circle on my screen and every time this circle show up, i have to turn off my pc because don't let me do nothing. Any solution for that issue? My pc:HP ENVY Recline TouchSmart All in One - 27-k350 (ENERGY STAR)Número de modelo: J4W47AA

Hi again Andieco, It is good to hear back from you! If your computer is not freezing when you are referring to a white circle, there may be an issue with the touch screen software installed on your computer. To correct this, I suggest re-installing all of the original software and hardware drivers that first came with your computer. This can be done by following the steps in this document on Using Recovery Manager to Restore Software and Drivers (Windows 8), and then update the software by Using HP Support Assistant (Windows 8). If the white cursor will not stop blinking after performing the steps in the documents above, I recommend returning your system back to a previous restore point to before the issue occurred. This can be done by following the steps in this document on Using Microsoft System Restore (Windows 8).
Should the problem continue, I suggest performing a backup and recovery of your operating system. This can be done by following the steps in this resource on Backing Up Your Files (Windows 8), as well as Performing an HP system recovery (Windows 8). This should return your system back to factory defaults.
If the issue persists, please call our technical support by clicking the link below to get the support number for your region.

    I hope this helps!

  • HT4103 Terminal will not accept typing or pasting after it asks for password.

After enterin sudo command, terminal asks for password. After that it will not accept typing in password, I type and nothing appears. If I try to paste in password nothing happens.

The password is never echoed (Displayed) into the teminal window. So after you type the password in hit the enter key or just let it work for the command you entered. When it is finished doing what you ask it to do with whatever command you typed in the normal prompt will return.

  • Cannot log in to Windows; will not accept password

Shutdown my Windows 8.1 tablet last night normally with no unusual issues. Will not accept the password this am. Have checked to see that correct pword was entered.

I am having the same problem.  Have a Satellite C55-B5240 running Windows 8.1 that is only 2 weeks old.  Shut down last night and this morning cannot get past the log in screen.  Checked and rechecked the caps, the password, even went on to another computer and changed the password 6 times.  I can get on with any of the other pc's but not the new one. On-line-chatted with Microsoft and spoke to 3 different techs.  They all said the same things...it was beyond their expertise and I should contact Toshiba, get the Windows 8.1 key from them, and reload 8.1!!  Very funny.  I can't even get online let alone download anything.  They were no help whatsoever!  Spent 2 1/2 hours on chat with them.  I don't know what to do other than call Toshiba on Monday.

I purchased Photoshop CS5 for my windows vista operating system. I purchased a canon 7 D some yrs ago no problem. I purchased canon 7D mk 11 in December 2014. The supplied software will not work with vista. Photoshop CS5 will not accept canon7D mk11. Can someone please tell me how i process canon 7D mk11 photos ?????. (is it possible to bypass camera raw and open the photo straight into CS5 without using camera raw first. if so how do i do that. if not how do i process pictures).
    Thank you.
    Brian in the UK.

Photoshop by itself cannot process raw image data. That is why the Camera Raw plug-in was developed. You could try the DNG converter and convert your images to the DNG format and then the Camera Raw that you have would be able to open them. I can't recommend Lightroom because you are using Vista, and Lightroom 5 cannot be used with that operating system. It may be time for you to get a new computer and upgrade your software.

  • After power on will not accept name and password

Having trouble with MacBook Mac OS X 10.6.8
At start up will not accept name and or password. Gives IP address info then network accounts unavailable.

    Hi Beebop1991,
I'm sorry to hear you are having issues with your Administrator User account and password.
It sounds like your computer is booting up to a network drive instead of your Macintosh HD.
If this is the case, follow these steps:
Startup Manager: How to select a startup volume
    Follow these steps:
Turn on, or restart, your Mac.
Immediately press and hold the Option key. After a few seconds, the Startup Manager should appear. The Startup Manager scans for available available volumes.
Use the left and right arrow keys on the keyboard to select the volume you would like to use.
Press the Return key on your keyboard to start up the computer from the volume you selected.
If this does not resolve your issue, and you need to change your Administrator password, follow the steps below for Snow Leopard:
OS X: Changing or resetting an account password
In Mac OS X v10.6.8 or earlier, follow these steps to reset a password when there is only one administrator account on the computer, or if the original administrator account needs a password reset. "Original" administrator account refers to the one that was created immediately after installing Mac OS X. If the original administrator password is known, that administrator account may be used to reset the passwords of other administrator accounts using the steps described above. These steps require an optical drive; if your Mac does not have an optical drive and you have a Mac OS X v10.6 Install disc, see below.
Start up from a Mac OS X Install disc (one whose version is closest to the version of Mac OS X installed).  Usually, you can start from the disc by putting it in your computer, restarting, and holding the C key. Or, put it in the computer and click the Install or Restore icon you see in the disc's main window (after which the computer will start from the disc without you needing to hold C). Or, you can use Startup Manager or the Startup Disk preference pane to select the Install disc.
Choose a language, click the arrow button to continue,
Mac OS X v10.6 or later: Choose Password Reset from the Utilities menu.
Mac OS X v10.5 or v10.4: Choose Reset Password from the Utilities menu.
Mac OS X v10.3: Choose Reset Password from the Installer menu.
Tip: If you don't see this menu or menu choice, you're probably not started from the disc yet.
Note: The default keyboard layout is U.S. English while started from the installation disc. If you use a keyboard layout other than U.S English, use the Input menu (the flag icon on the right side of the menu bar) to select the desired layout before typing a new password.
Select your Mac OS X hard disk volume.
Select the user name of your original administrator account.
Important: Do not select "System Administrator (root)". This is actually the root user. You should not confuse it with a normal administrator account.
    Enter a new password.
    Click Save.
Click the red button in the upper left corner to quit the application.
Choose Quit Mac OS X Installer... from the Mac OS X Installer menu.
    Click Restart.
After following these steps, you'll want to also follow the steps in this article.
Mac OS X v10.6: Resetting the original administrator account password on a Mac that has no optical drive
These steps require a second computer that has an optical drive.Note: If the second computer is a Mac, make sure Mac OS X v10.5.3 or later is installed. If the second computer is a PC, make sure the DVD or CD Sharing Update 1.0 for Windows is installed.
Open "Remote Install Mac OS X" from the Utilities folder.
    Follow the onscreen instructions.
For more information, see Sharing DVDs or CDs with Remote Disc.
    Additional Information
You can press the Eject key on the keyboard to eject DVD media.  Inserting a startup DVD will add that DVD to the list of startup volumes (as in the image above).  You can also attach FireWire or USB external hard drives to add to the list of startup volumes.
This startup volume selection is temporary.  To set the default startup volume for your Mac after your computer is running, open System Preferences and choose Startup Disk from the View menu (in Mac OS X) or open the Boot Camp control panel (in Windows).
I hope you are back on track soon!

  • WET54G v3.1 Will not accept the default password for web setup

    The setup:
1 2WIRE wireless router for AT&T DSL connection
1 wireless laptop, online and good to go
1 desktop, too far from router to connect with an ethernet cable, this computer does not have wi-fi
1 new WET54G v3.1, trying to setup as a wireless-ethernet bridge to get the wired desktop on the network and online
I have set up the desktop with static IP: 192.168.1.1; Subnet 255.255.255.0; Gateway 192.168.1.226.  The WET54G is directly connected to the desktop.  I open Internet Explorer and go to 192.168.1.226.  After entering the password "admin" and leaving the username blank, the login prompt simply reappears as if the password is incorrect.  I have reset the WET54G to factory defaults numerous times (held the reset button for over 30 seconds).  It simply will not accept the password.
Any suggestions?  I tried live chat but the chat window was so slow and buggy that both times it seemed we were about to make progress the window would freeze up or refresh entirely and disconnect me.  Extremely frustrating to say the least.
    Thanks,
    Sean

    Hi brickmonkey,
Sorry for taking so long to get back on this.  We left for a long vacation and I got ridiculously busy when we got back.  ANyway I just spent some time working on this and wanted to report back.  Still didn't get it to work.
Got into the 2Wire and wrote down it's settings:
    Router Address: 192.168.1.254
    Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: (???) I did not see this under the summary page, but it was on the internet connection details page., it's a 151.x.x.x number, which the WET54G was not happy to accept as the default gateway.  It gave me the error "DUT and Gateway cannot locate in different subnet."  Also, on that internet connection details page, an additional subnet mask of 255.255.255.255 was listed, but I'm guessing 255.255.255.0 is the correct one to use, right?
Because it wouldn't accept that 151.x.x.x address, I can't get any farther.  I did notice when setting up the SSID and security to match that of the 2WIRE, the channel was fixed at 6 and the dropdown was disabled.  I changed the 2WIRE from 1 to 6 in case that was an issue.  The WET54G is in Infrastructure mode, as the guide you linked to indicated.
Any thoughts with this new info?
Thanks again for your help with this,
    Sean
