  • IMac won't start without install disc

Hi, I'm new to all of this. I tried resetting my admin password using install disc on my iMac as I'd forgotten it. Now iMac won't start without disc. If disc is ejected on restart apple logo flashes between no entry sign and folder with "?" on it. Will start up with install disc in, but then wants me to choose language and install OS. Tried repairing and verifying HD and all seems ok. Tried holding option key and selecting HD on startup, but same outcome - choose language and install OS. How do I get back to normal desk top? Do I have to install OS again? Will I lose data? Please, please help! Thanks.

It should only take a minute or so at most to boot from the DVD.
If your sure you have the correct Install Disk for that iMac, I'd start over. Then if it still doesn't work then perhaps a trip to your Local Apple Service Provider with the Disk or Disk and iMac is in order.

  • My laptop won't start without battery mounted

Hello! I have a Compaq CQ61-200sq laptop and recently my battery just got "old". So for the time untill i will buy a new one a just took it out and try to use the laptop without battery, just with the AC adaptor pluged in. But, just i said it won't start if i don't mount the battery. If i took the battery out while it's on there is no problem.
So, my question, beside what could be the problem, is if the problem will disapear with a new battery. I don't want to buy a new battery and still have problems.
    Thank you!

I updated it about two to three times and would still experience the same problem.
Why update 3 times?!? If you run an update, and it installs normally, that it - done!
There's a world of difference between running BatteryUpdate 1.2 and installing a new battery. In fact, if you read the linked page above, it states that the after you run battery update if you experience any of the listed problems you should contact AppleCare. Their first step will be to replace the battery. Could it be a logic board problem? Sure. Is that the first thing they'll do? No. By that reasoning, the first thing to try if your car fails to start on a cold morning is to put in a new engine...
So, to the OP, contact Apple - or better yet, if it's convenient, go in to an Apple Store. Get a new battery. If the problem persists, go from there. The advantage of taking it into a Store is that they'll test it on the spot.

  • Need access to Java SE 6 for  use in CS4 in OS 10.8.5. (PS won't start without it)

Where can I reliably access Java SE 6 for  use in CS4 in OS 10.8.5.   Right now PS won't open without it ( I get a warning message saying to install Java SE 6 runtime.  When I hit install, the result is no fle found.
Adobe has a dead download for related/similar archivel/vestigal plug-ins. Want a clean download to avoid malware.
Will it even work if I get a clean version.  It should....I have CS4 running on another iMac with 10.8.5
If it won't work....what are the alternatives.  I can't  readily or meaningfully deinstall 10.8.5 and go back to 10.6.
    All assistance appreciated.

  • PowerMacG4 won't start without old Cinema Display attached

    PowerMacG4 867dp (Mirror Door)
    NVidia GeForce4mx w/ADC+DVI
20" Cinema Display w/ power switch, on ADC port
Acer 23" G23HL, on DVI port
I replaced my failing ADC with a new display (with much-appreciated help from this board!) Works fine as dominant display (currently not mirrored) but I need Cinema Display attached and powered up to run system. The Power Switch on tower lights, but won't shut down system, or start it without ADC attached. (It won't control system at all, only Power Switch on ADC works) Nothing in Preferences seems to apply. Should I just duct-tape new Display over old ADC and move on???       THANKS!

Thanks for your response BD Aqua. I don't have those diagnostics and frankly still wouldn't have a clue if I did. I was hoping I had overlooked some simple Preferance-type step in the change-over, but beyond maybe changing the old battery next, I'll just put one screen in front of the other- fortunately I've got room.  Thanks again for your reply!

  • My computer won't start without unplugging and restarting, My computer won't start without unplugging and restarting

My computer as failed to start twice without unplugging and restarting.  What is the issue here and do I need to address it.  My mac is approximately five years old and I recently added Snow Leopard.  Love computer and don't want to change

I recently had a PC which had similar issues. When it was cold, it took couple attemps for it boot and after that it worked without any problems. Problem was capacitors, when they fail or are near total failure they might still work when they warm little bit (same thing sometimes applies to solder connections under chipsas they expand in heat and might form connection again) and this was the case with that PC. After replacing them all was back to normal.
    I would check capacitors.

  • IMac won't start without a lot of coaxing

    Hi,
I have an iMac that's a little over a year old (Oct. 2010) and it's acting bizarrely.
The other day the finder crashed and I had to restart. When I restarted, it went from the grey startup screen to the blue screen, then sat indefinitely on the blue screen. It wouldn't move past the blue screen, no matter how many times I tried. I put it into target disk mode and did a disk utility scan on it from another computer. Errors were found, and it turned on with no issues.
It's now the day after this happened and this problem is happening again. It is also refusing to start up while connected to any external drives. Help! I want a computer that functions normally.
    Intel iMac
    Software version: 10.6.8
Processor: 3.2 GHz Intel Core i3

Disconnect all peripherals except your keyboard and mouse. Do the following:
Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    Do the following:
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install the Combo Updater for the version you prefer from support.apple.com/downloads/.

My Macbook Pro won't turn on unless its plugged into the charger. If I turn it on without it being plugged in, it'll begin starting up, then immediatly shut down (the battery is fully charged). Does anyone know how to fix this problem? It's really getting me worried!!

  • I upgraded to Firefox 4 and my toolbar didn't load, now Firefox won't start automatically saying a script has stopped working. how can I fix this?

Before Firefox will load I have to stop a script message that appears saying that the script for this page is either busy or stopped working. Once I hit stop Firefox will load as normal but without doing this step it will not load at all. Once it is loaded the toolbar has not been loaded and I am told to reinstall the toolbar but I have not been able to do so.

  • Labwiew 8 won't start without internet connection

I have Labview 8.0 installed on a NI PXI-1050 chasis with Windows XP and Service Pack 2 installed.  The problem is that Labview will not load up (it locks up at finishing initialization) if I do not have the chasis connected to the internet via ethernet connection.  When I connect to the internet and reboot the computer, Labview is able to start fine.  The chasis is installed in a mobile vechicle and cannot always be connected to the internet.  I've read that Labview 8 needs to connect to the internet to make sure the copy it is running is legitimate?  Is this copy protection messing me up?  Is there a way to run Labview 8 without internet connection?
    Thanks.

Where did you read this? There's an initial activation that you do when you first install LabVIEW. but there's no "phone home" each time you launch LabVIEW. I can start up LabVIEW without an internet connection.
More than likely what's causing it are services that run and/or MAX. Software firewalls installed on a computer can block this communication even it's happening on a loopback, but you said that the problem goes away once you connect to the internet, so it's likely not a firewall issue. Is the PXI chassis normally connected directly to the internet through a modem, or is it connected to a router (when it's connected)? Are you using a static IP address on your PXI chassis?

  • Won't Start Without Startup Disc In

Well... it's been having a string of problems and I was wondering whether it was worth trying to fix this myself or to bring it in somewhere.
Basically, I've been on the latest 10.3 for a while, but everything started acting a little clunky and slow and just started becoming increasing problematic, and there were a number of little glitches happening more and more frequently, such as not being able to change the HD picture. So I tried restarting. It stopped on the gray screen with the apple and stayed there. No spinning at all beneath it, just the apple.
So I used the first start up disc to run a check of the computer. Everything showed as okay, and when I went to reinstall, thinking my data might be gone (as had happened eventually with my previous 4 puked HDs), but there it was still. So I used the start up disc to start up and there everything was just like nothing had happened.
I tried restarting without the disc in and ran into the same problem. Basically I need the startup disc in to do anything. I then started backing up everything on my flash disc, but ran out of space (it's a small one) and attempted burning the last stuff onto a disc. It kept telling me things here and there couldn't be read. So finally I decided to screw it, and just reinstall, erasing everything and starting over.
I've installed the main package, and am currently installing the updates, but it's stuck on optimization at 62% for the past few hours. I'm concerned that if I stop it there by force quitting it'll just make things worse, especially being not even sure yet if it's fixed the problem. I have a feeling this current glitch is related, but I don't know enough about this to know for sure... hence my asking.
Basically, I was just wondering if it sounds like something familiar, and if it's worth it to try to reinstall again should this current glitch mess things up somehow or is it looking bad enough to just bring it in.

Have you tried removing the extra RAM? It's possible that it may have something to do with the problems you're seeing.

Seems like a font issue, try this:
    gnome-terminal --tab-with-profile=Default
Else you can try editing the settings using gconf-editor.

  • ITunes won't start WITHOUT error message

I cannot get iTunes to start at all. When I click on it in the start menu or on my desktop I see the hourglass but then nothing happens. I have tried re-downloading the software and clicking "Repair", I have tried restarting my computer but still nothing happens. Can anyone help me?

I'm having much the same problem. I have XP Pro and SP3. I can't get iTunes or Quicktime to launch. I'm using iTunes 7 anf Quicktime 7. I tried the fix with the smart card file, but it didn't work. I can't get the Smart Card Helper to activate. I just keep getting a "1068 error" with I try to start it. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

  • ITunes won't start without internet

    Hi
is this a bug or a feature ? I cannot start iTunes while I am not connected to the internet. I get the beachball and iTunes is not responding. As soon as I activate the internet connection iTunes starts up immediately. Is this the way it is supposed to be or did I screw something up ?
What if I am offline and want to listen to some music ?
    Thanks for your help !

No, Genius is turned off. When I log in as a different user ( on my macbook), iTunes works fine. I suppose something is wrong with my preferences. I also noted problems when syncing/backing up my iPhone. Not sure if it is related though.

  • [SOLVED] KF5/Plasma won't start without external monitor

I have connected an external monitor through HDMI, it works fine in plasma5, the only problem is, if HDMI isn't connected I can't start Plasma 5. I just attached the monitor again, disabled it in the setting (the monitor stopped showing any display, but now Plasma gives black screen if HDMI is not connected, but if HDMI cable is connected the laptop screen would turn on just fine.
I have tried removing the kwinrc and all plasma* from ~/.config but to no avail.
    How can I reset it?
P.S: I created a new 'test' user, and Plasma works fine with it, so it's not an installation problem but a configuration problem.

Ya, I run dual monitors on a single nvidia card and on about every second or third reboot, I would end up loging into mirrored screen 1. I would have to disable compositing, reset screens in nvidia-settings, then re-enable compositing. Someone else was complaining about the artifacting and said he cured it by removing those two applications. I figured I could skip the disable and enable of compositing and was pleasantly surprised to find that it also cured the mirrored screen issue too.
