Terminus font without xorg.conf

Hi, since I have accidentally deleted my xorg.conf I am trying to run x without xorg.conf. I am very surprised tosay that everything works simply fine (including dri, 1333x768 widescreen resolutiion and touchpad; the keyboard layout can be easily configured with setxkbdmap in .xinitrc). The only problem concerns the paths of the fonts: xorg looks in /usr/share/fonts for all my fonts except those in /usr/share/fonts/local, where the terminus fonts are actually installed.
Thus I wonder if there is some way to tell xorg to look also there: perhaps a command to be put in .xinitrc to add the missing font path dinamically, or a way to change the default paths where it looks at startup.
Obviously I have also tried to create a xorg.conf with only the Section "Files" and the font paths, but then xorg is not autoconfigureed anymore and it fails because there is no devices in xorg.conf.
My last resort will be to modify the terminus-font PKGBUILD to put the fonts somewhere else, perhaps in /usr/share/fonts/misc, but I would prefer a cleaner way. And no, I do not want to rewrite my xorg.conf just for some fonts (and the tools to make a config file produce an unusable one in my system):)

Oh, I found it. It is enough to add this to .xinitrc:
xset fp+ /usr/share/fonts/local

  • [solved]terminus font without xorg.conf

    Hi
I start X without a xorg.conf as every conf I tried did not work. Without the conf X works perfectly.
But I now want the terminus font for my WM and pacman installed them in /usr/share/fonts/local
This directory is not recognized by X by default.
Additional font directories are usually specified in the xorg.conf, but I don't have one.
I can manually set the font path with:
    mkfontdir
    xset fp+ /usr/share/fonts/local
    xset fp rehash
I now see the font in xfontsel.
    But when I restart X, it's gone..
Is there a way to fix this?

I was hoping for a more elegant solution, but I guess it's elegant enough

  • Howto change DPI, without xorg.conf if possible?

So, once and for all I'd like to have DPI issue solved
I want to have DPI set to 96. At this size fonts and everything seems at normal size, I don't want to argue about that...
    Practically,
    $ xdpyinfo | grep inch
    resolution: 121x121 dots per inch
    I want it to be:
    $ xrandr --dpi 96
    $ xdpyinfo | grep inch
    resolution: 96x96 dots per inch
I have intel 965M chipset, using the intel driver:
    xf86-video-intel 2.6.3-3
    xorg-server 1.6.1-1
So, when I run xrandr manually, it gets fixed to 96x96 but how to do it automatically?
I think I tried all of the common methods that are advised to this problem, like adding
    Xft.dpi: 96
    into ~/.Xdefaults and ~/.Xresources.
    I also changed /etc/X11/xinit/xserverrc into
exec /usr/bin/X -dpi 96 -nolisten tcp
    but no result.
I remember that DisplaySize option in section monitor in xorg.conf used to work but now doesn't. (Not sure however whent it stopped working and if it was also intel driver). I even put
    Option "UseEDID" "false"
    into Section Screen...
I would prefer if this could be done without using xorg.conf cause now I only have Option "DontZap" "false" there.
I use kdm, if that matters.. but the dpi is wrong in all DEs.

Okay, both of the recommended settings work.
    First:
caskale13c wrote:Find the ServerArgsLocal value in /usr/share/config/kdm/kdmrc and add -dpi 96 (or 146) to it.  It will be located in the [X-:*-Core] section.
    Second:
    add
    xrandr --dpi 96
    into /usr/share/config/kdm/Xsetup
For making it work also with an external monitor I had to add
    Section "Screen"
    Identifier "Screen0"
    SubSection "Display"
    Viewport 0 0
    Depth 24
    Virtual 1920 1080
    EndSubSection
    EndSection
into xorg.conf. This wasn't needed before.
Anyway, now it all works fine
    Thank you, guys.

  • Set permanent monitor refresh rate without xorg.conf

    Hi everyone,
Came back to archlinux, made a clean install with gnome 3. Found out that my GDM and Gnome monitor refresh rate is wrong. For GDM I solved it by adding   xrandr -s 1024x768 -r 85 to the gdm init script. Maybe it's ugly, but at least working. I've got no xorg.conf and I don't want to create it only because of this problem. Using GUI screen settings in System preferences I managed only to set permanently correct resolution (1024x768) but the refresh rate cannot be changed there, so every time I boot now I have correct resolution and refresh rate for GDM, but after login I have 1024x768@60 only, so I have to manually issue   'xrandr -r 85' every time I login. Can I fix it without creating xorg.conf file under /etc/X11? What I already tried was creating the config file under  /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/  and set proper resolution and refresh rate there, but it didn't help. If someone has advice or idea, i will be very grateful. Thanks a lot in advance.

I think you need to specify the values from the manufacturer's website.
    Here's my /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-monitor.conf:
    Section "Monitor"
    Identifier "Monitor0"
    VendorName "DELL"
    ModelName "U2311H"
    HorizSync 30.0 - 83.0
    VertRefresh 56.0 - 76.0
    Option "DPMS"
    EndSection
    Section "Device"
    Identifier "Device0"
    Driver "nouveau"
    VendorName "NVIDIA Corporation"
    EndSection
    Section "Screen"
    Identifier "Screen0"
    Device "Device0"
    Monitor "Monitor0"
    DefaultDepth 24
    SubSection "Display"
    Depth 24
    EndSubSection
    EndSection
I probably don't need to specify "Driver" with open-source drivers, but it's easier to just replace it with "nvidia", since I sometimes switch to the proprietary ones.

  • Multi-head setup without xorg.conf

I'm using the newer method of running X without an xorg.conf and want a traditional multi-head setup (a "Normal multi-head" method, allowing a separate X session on each of the monitors).
I would use this to have a different window manager run on each of the screens (something like the following for OpenBox: DISPLAY=:0.1 openbox), perhaps with the aid of Switchscreen.
XRandR will give me one big virtual screen (and is currently how I'm doing it, combined with xnest), but that's not what I want. Any ideas?

    WooHoo !
awkwood   -  You Rock ! I feel like an idiot for not paying closer attention to your first post. I finally realized what you were saying and figured out how to do the downgrade.
    If it's 2.12.0 I'd suggest trying 2.11.0 instead.
The most recent update borked my dual display with a similar error message but 2.11 works fine.
    I don't use an xorg.conf.
So essentially this seems to be a bug with version 2.12 of the xf86-video-intel driver. I downgraded to ver 2.11 and everything works perfectly. I am running dual monitors at full resolution with no fuss. So again awkwood I thank you !
For other Arch Newbies who have this issue in the mean time until they fix the bug, this is how I did the downgrade.
    Step 1:
download the 2.11 package from the link below
    http://arm.konnichi.com/extra/os/i686/x … pkg.tar.xz
    Step 2:
Open a terminal and cd to the directory where you saved the file
    $ cd /home/$USERNAME/Downloads
    Step 3:
Use pacman to install the package
    sudo pacman -U xf86-video-intel-2.11.0-2-i686.pkg.tar.xz
Finally reboot. When you log back in everything should work fine
Again thanks to awkwood as well as karol, blind, Inxsible and everyone else for their help. Everyone here is so helpful, I am defiantly an Arch user for life. Hopefully they will fix the bug in the next version of the driver. My next step is to see about filling a bug report.

  • Dual Monitors without Xorg.conf Help

I have an Acer Aspire One and Im trying to setup Dual Displays. Every guide Ive found, including the Acer One Article in the Wiki talks about editing the Xorg.conf file, yet my system seems to be running without one. Other than problems setting up the dual displays I dont have any issues with Display Settings so it seems my installation of arch linux seems to be using some other technology other than Xorg. Does any one know how the Display settings are setup without the use of the Xorg.conf file ? This is a fresh Arch Linux Base Install using only OpenBox.
Ive also tried using XRandR to setup my dual displays but I keep getting an error and google doesnt provide an answer.
I try and run the following command ( wich works fine on my other PC )
                    [zero@zero ~]$ xrandr --auto --output LVDS1 --mode 1024x600 --right-of VGA1
    And get the following error
X Error of failed request:  BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes)
Major opcode of failed request:  149 (RANDR)
Minor opcode of failed request:  7 (RRSetScreenSize)
Serial number of failed request:  24
Current serial number in output stream:  25
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

  • Xf86-radeonhd broken with new Kernel got problems without xorg.conf

    Hi all,
according to lspci I got a
"01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc M56P [Radeon Mobility X1600]"
I've had problems with it and the open source drivers for a long time in both Ubuntu and Arch (round about every 10 minutes the monitor (of two) which doesn't have the mouse on it flickers white for a split second but long enough to be annoying).
I solved it by using radeonhd which doesn't have this problem even though it's performance is slightly worse, i'm not a gamer so I dind't care too much.
However now radeonhd has become extremely slow probably due to KMS so I mv'ed my xorg.conf and am running without one using the radeon driver.
Performance is great but I got the flicker problem back. Does anyone have an idea what to do? This card has also not worked with recent fglrx versions by the way (the README says it supports M55 + M56 or so but explicitly states that M56P is not supported).
    many thanks in advance Niklas

So I have radeonhd working properly again with the Radeon Mobility X1600.
I recommend disabling KMS and trying radeonhd. You can disable the KMS by following these instructions: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/ATI#Disable_KMS
This is working much more nicely than the regular radeon driver with the flicker problems. The speed difference with KMS disabled is VERY noticeable. Hopefully this will be fixed soon...

  • X running without xorg.conf

    Hi,
I've installed the ati-glrx-beyond package with the ati drivers and noticed that my xorg.conf was gone (not sure if it was there in the first place):
    find / -name xorg.conf
    returns no files.
Anyway, X runs fine, with the correct resolution and everything (no direct rendering though). The problem is that I can't configure it with aticonfig (as the configuration file isn't there)...running Xorg -configure crashes with the following message:

Any ideas what might be wrong? Thanks in advance

A bug in the ATI drivers prevents you from using autoconfiguration. You could move away the fglrx driver file or uninstall the ATI driver temporarily and use Xorg -configure to generate a generic config using the vesa or vga driver first, then move the things back in place and use aticonfig to generate the ati-specific xorg.conf.

    Thanks in advance.

All that is needed is the following:
    xinit -- -xf86config /path/to/file vt1
    # or
    xinit -- -xf86config /path/to/file vt$XDG_VTNR
The first is specifically for starting from tty 1, the second is the general form.  Startx includes the XDG_VTNR, which is why you see the difference.  I think you could also use `startx -- -xf86config /path/to/file` but I never use starts, so I'm not sure if it passes parameters to X in the same way.
EDIT: startx does take arguments for X in the same way.  So the following would also work:
    startx -- -xf86config /path/to/file
This would be the same as startx, just with the new config file.
(edit: added vt prefix as noted below)

  • X keyboard layout suddenly wrong / won't listen to xorg.conf

    Hi!
    - After last restart I noticed, that I suddenly had quertz instead of querty (xorg, slim and xfce).
    - I checked xorg.conf, everything still as it was.
    - I still got querty in the tty's, but not in X.
    - Restarting X didn't change anything, no matter to what layout I set in xorg.conf.
    - setxkbmap -layout [layout] works fine (+ fixes it for the session).
(The only thing that "was changed" on the system was... well - a "high precision incision" at the usb-receivers [cordless kbd + mouse, logitech] cable - some of one cable is showing, but no cables are touching or damaged and I think only some of the tasty isolation and the isolating tape I used when I fixed it the last three times are missing. While I somehow think damage like this to be causing an error like that should be really really unlikely, I didn't want to miss mentioning it - just in case.)
    Any ideas? Thanks!

    Hi!
I know how to "Setting non-us keyboard without xorg.conf", that's what I've been doing since that problem started (and it works). But setting non-us keyboard WITH xorg.conf stopped working (recently).
Was there another more recent xorg-update (maybe in testing which I'm using) I didn't notice? If not, I can't think of any changes that could have caused that for me (besides the "unlikely ones" I mentioned in my first post). Everything was working fine with xorg 7.4 (until 2009-05-04 22:31:55 ).
Just in case that means anything:
    pacman -Qs xorg
    local/hwd 5.5-1
    local/xorg-font-utils 7.4-2
    local/xorg-fonts-alias 1.0.1-2
    local/xorg-fonts-encodings 1.0.2-3
    local/xorg-fonts-misc 1.0.0-4
    local/xorg-server 1.6.1-1 (xorg)
    local/xorg-server-utils 7.4-6 (xorg)
    local/xorg-utils 7.4-4 (xorg)
    local/xorg-xauth 1.0.3-1
    local/xorg-xinit 1.1.1-1 (xorg)
    local/xorg-xkb-utils 7.4-2
Edit: Can't restart xorg for a while now, but tomorrow I guess I'm going to try and do a new xorg.conf starting out from xorg log autoconfigure. (And I guess I'm going to solder that stupid cable again - just in case. And maybe I should complain to logitech, that the plastic they're using for the outer cable mantle is way to tasty - damn you,  plasticizers!) - if noone has any better ideas...?

  • Auto generate xorg.conf at startup

Does Archlinux have a package like gentoo's mkxf86config?
    auto generate xorg.conf ?
    thanks

Is there any special reason you need a program to do this? If you weren't aware, X.org has been able to run without xorg.conf for quite some time now with generally good detection. Only proprietary driver users tend to need such a thing (but only minimals), which their drivers can make (at least, nvidia can with nvidia-xconfig). Most of the tools that I know of to do what you ask are accordingly out of date.

  • No xorg.conf and x3100 slow performance

I recently installed Arch Linux on my laptop and almost everything is working fine.  Some time ago,  I used to use a tool that detects my hardware and generates a xorg.conf, but this time, I installed Arch and X is running fine without xorg.conf.
However, I have a problem with 3D Aceleration. My 3D card is Intel x3100 (GM965). (I installed xf86-video-intel driver) 3D aceleration is very slow. Ive run glxinfo and it shows only NONE and SLOW flags. Some simple opengl games like supertux run very very slow.
Ive tried to copy and paste a xorg file from a x3100 user, but X didnt work at all. What can I do to enable 3D aceleration. Thanks in advance
EDIT: I was really happy I didnt have to write a xorg.conf file. Will I have to?

    Thanks for your answer
I've tried adding this "ServerLayout" layout section and it gives me the same fatal error from X: "no screen founds"

  • Xorg.conf DPI settings VS. fonts DPI settings - Confusing!

I honestly have to admit, that I don't get it. Having a ThinkPad T42p with a 1600x1200 LCD with the visible dimensions of 304 x 228 mm, I have set that in xorg.conf ("DisplaySize  304 228"), which results in Xorg setting up 133x133 DPI on start (without specifying this DisplaySize setting, it defaults to 75x75 DPI).
133 DPI results in fonts displayed way too large, although I remember WinXP (which came preinstalled with this laptop) setting 133 DPI as well, which also gave large fonts, but not that large as seen with Xorg.
I am now using KDE (specifically funkyou's KDEMOD), and I have set "Fixed DPI: 96 DPI" in font-settings, which means, text is displayed in a reasonable size with 96 DPI, but Xorg is still set to 133 DPI:
    $ xdpyinfo | grep res
    resolution: 133x133 dots per inch
I really don't understand this font vs. Xorg DPI setting. How does this fit together?
Why are fonts shown way too large at 133 DPI, if that's the correct DPI setting for my screen size & resolution?

Why does it need to scale properly, if Xorg should already have set DPI to the correct value calculated from the display size?
How did you determine, that 100 DPI is the correct fonts-DPI-setting for your display?
This is just weird, because setting the DPI setting for fonts does not influence the DPI setting of the X server (that's what I mentioned above, selected "Fixed DPI: 96" in KDE's font-settings, and xdpyinfo still reports 133 DPI).
Concerning my LCD, 133 DPI seems reasonable for my 15" laptop-display with relatively high native resolution of 1600x1200, so the Xorg setting surely is correct. But why do I then need to set 96 DPI for fonts to be displayed in a proper size?
Even more confusing is, that the settings for the ATI Radeon open-source-driver offer even more options concering DPI:
    #Option "MergedDPI" # [<str>]
    #Option "ConstantDPI" # [<bool>]
As seen, I have not enabled these, but that makes altogether 4 different settings for influencing DPI.
Fact is, 96 DPI in KDE's fonts-settings seems to lead to the desired result, although that value should not be the proper one for my display-size & resolution, as well as I have no idea, what the X server resolution (133x134 DPI) is all about, especially because it does not seem to be of any importance if font-settings are forced to a different DPI setting (which means, it does not seem to matter, if the X server resolution is set to 75x75, 96x96 or 133x133 DPI, as long as the option for force fonts at 96 DPI is selected in KDE's fonts-settings).

  • [Solved] Changed Graphics Driver/Xorg.conf, Font Size Now Different

    Hello,
I just got the Catalyst 9.4 drivers working on my laptop (Lenovo T400) since the open source ones just can't keep up (even with DRI).
The problem is now my fonts are all different sizes (or not loading).
I was thinking this might be because of my monitor settings in xorg.conf.  I've spent a really long time trying to get the catalyst drivers working (I'm doing OpenGL work, so I kinda need them), so I definitely understand why the Arch team took them out of the main repository.  I'm just a little hesitant about changing settings after I finally found a working config.

What are you using to login?
if it's startx, you can do startx -- -dpi 96
if it's a login manager, you'll need to edit it's configuration and set it otherwise.
Thanks for the quick reply.  I'm starting slim as a daemon at bootup inside /etc/rc.conf, then using XFCE4.

  • Xorg.conf jagged fonts

I am running an nvidia graphics card with twinview to support dual monitors.  I used "nvidia --config" to get my xorg.conf file and then manually created 10-monitor.  If fonts in the xorg sever are rendered jaggedly, is that likely to be a xorg.conf problem, or a fonts.conf problem?
    Thanks in advance!

On close inspection, it looks like all of the above.
However on very specific font sizes it looks great.  For example inconsolata-g at point 7 looks shiny but at point 8 it gets jagged.  This implies to me that the fonts aren't vectorizing properly, no?
    That's an anti-aliasing problem right?
