Terp10 experience at Kelley School of Business, Indiana University

The TERP10 certification was held at the Kelley School of Business, Indiana University on Friday, 29th of May 2009. The associated boot-camp was conducted in the days preceding the certification. The class achieved a 100% pass rate.
I attempt to share my overall experience w.r.t the certification in this thread:
The boot-camp is fairly intensive as the class lasts the entire day. Given the amount of information to be absorbed, it is important to learn in the class, alongside the lecture rather than allocate a separate post-class study time.  Nevertheless, 2-3 hours of study time for revision outside of the class is useful.
A few tips:
1. In order to perform well in the certification, it is important to gain a sound understanding of every topic. Alongside, one must also keep the exam's format in mind while preparing. Since the test consists of mostly multiple choice questions, the need to memorize vital bits of information is reduced, but not eliminated. A solid understanding of the concepts, coupled with some amount of memorization is necessary to perform well.
2. It is important to understand how each module fits into the larger scheme of things. You're expected to know how the modules interact with each other.
3. While not absolutely essential, it is useful to prepare a set of notes that can be referred to.
Given the breadth of topics covered, the TERP10 exam is challenging. However, with a sound study plan the complexity is reduced, and the entire process becomes a lot more enjoyable!

Hello Anpai,
Many thanks for the informative post. And very well done with the pass rate! I would have to agree with you on the need to have some understanding of every topic. That and remembering to answer absolutely every question. The tree network and ability to jump between branches makes it very easuty to forget. I asked my students to open up the tree at the very end of the exam to its maximum extent just to see if there were any buttons unchecked. It's rare but it does happen that sometimes students have forgotten a question in one section - often one they thought they would go back to.
I think it is also important to have a study plan - the material can be overwhelming to begin with and a clear navigational aid can be invaluable. In fact I tell my students that the best thing to do before starting the course is remove any section headers, blank pages, note pages and so on from their course books - anything which doesn't add anything. This can reduce the volume of the materials considerably and gives an important psychological boost! Combined with a clear navigatinal aid and practice questions the students know exactly what they need to do and don't feel lost.
I also agree with Timothy on the need to express to the students that they will need to commit to the topic. The TERP10 course certainly isn't a walkover and students need to know that this is not a 'basic' SAP course - it is an SAP course and all of the courses are designed to be taxing in order to make them valuable in the marketplace. Once they understand that - and note how valuable it is - they are prepared to commit to it. 2-3 hours is I think more of a minimum time to spend on reading - depending on your ability to absorb information - but my best students (and indeed faculty) are thosew that spent until 11pm / midnight each night studying and making notes.
I think finally the most significant thing to take away would be that the stduents both need to understand how the modules interact. There are specific comments within the reading materials and of course questions that ask deliberately how module A interacts with module B. But the course title is something of a giveaway and the students who gain the clearest understanding of how the system extends beyond inidivudal rooes not on ly does better at the exam - they have taken the key learning away from the course!

  • Indiana University Terp10 Experience May 2010

On May 28th the Terp10 exam was held at Indiana University and for the second year straight we achieved a pass rate of 100%. We would like to thank Dr. Saputro for his time and effort in helping us achieve this goal.
    Personal Experience:
The course leading up to the exam was intense and requires most if not all of your time outside of class. Although the class generally ran from 9am to 5pm you should expect to spend another 4-5 hours outside of class in order to review and retain the material. There is a lot of material to know and since there is no more partial credit, the use of memory techniques comes in handy. Paying attention to the instructor and his/her subtle hints will pay off in the end.
    Tips for success:
    1. Put aside any secondary low priority tasks (This will take up most of your time/life for the duration of the course)
    2. Pay attention in class (Try not to get caught up doing other things while lecture is taking place)
    3. Take notes and compare with others
    4. Study individually and in groups
    5. Make the experience fun (Don't just focus on how much you have to learn or do)
    6. Create flash cards to help you study
    7. Ask questions when necessary
    8. Review your notes as much as possible
    9. When taking the exam be sure to read the questions in their entirety (It is easy to assume and make a mistake)
    10. Be sure to get rest (Especially the night before the exam)

From the get-go, our professor and TERP10 instructor did a good job in making sure we understand the difficulty of the new exam and the dedication it required. My main recommendation is for the duration of the TERP10 course, your life should revolve around SAP. After class, read the modules you discussed during the day, but you must absorb what you read; read to understand and apply it to your knowledge of the business processes. If something is not clear to you, ask questions to clarify. I also sat in the front of the class. I found that helped me stay focused during the long hours.
Everyone has their own study style, and knows what works best for them. If you truly dedicate yourself during the TERP10, you will succeed. At the very least, you will have learned a lot.
That how I went about preparing for the exam. I asked millions of questions. The result: 81%
I should mention that in the IU masters program, we had two SAP-based ERP courses which gave a boost of knowledge that helped during the TERP10.
    Good luck!

  • Business Objects Universe generator

    Hello,
We came across an interesting scenario and was hoping to hear from other with smiliar situation. In a SAP-BW and BO environment using Business Object Universe generator, it appears that BO requires direct data base connectivity to read data from BW. This to me sounded quite weird due to audit requirements and other compliance issues. Was wondering if there was anyother way for accessing BW data from BO.
The primary issue with ODBO from BO to BW was the limitations on the result rows that can be returned.  The way forward seemed to be directly database access with a generic read only user.
Anyother ideas? Has this changed over time with BO-XI.
    Any ideas appreciated?
    Regards
    Karthik

    Hi,
Thanks you for submitting your post, I would like to take this opportunity to reply your post, I do not have experience in BO 5.x, 6.x but I can explain you to understand how it work in BOE XI/XI R2.
In XI/XI R2 we use an RFC connection (MDX driver, which makes BAPI, SAP API calls) to SAP BW to obtain the details of the BW Query or Info Cube for building the Universe using the XI/XIR2 Business Objects designer application.  The request for the query or cube details is done VIA BAPI function calls. For the SAP BW Query we must have “allow External Access to this query” checked under the Query Property window.
Our Integrated Solution Kits do not access the SAP BW’s data source.

  • Requirements and Architecture for Business Objects Universe

Hi - apologies in advance for the probable repeat question but a search of the forums brought back an overload of information that wasn't quite specific enough.
We are about to purchase an application that comes with a Business Objects Universe but we've been told that we'll need to sort out our own licensing for the Client/Server side of its use.
I've done a lot of work with Crystal Reports in the past but having read up on Business Objects it appears that either the Desktop Intelligence of Web Intelligence clients are designed for the reporting facilities in BO.
Basically, the question is what exactly do we need to run reports from the BOU across the company AND what server architecture is required/recommended for the same?
As I see it, the BOU is the equivalent of an ORM layer in software development. This would mean we'd have:
    DATABASE
    UNIVERSE
    REPORTING CLIENT
...where the reporting client allowed the development and distribution of reports based on the specific licences purchased. However the reporting client wouldn't be Crystal Reports - is that correct?
Also is there any ballpark figure for the server and client licence costs? Assuming 5 developers and up to 300 users (although it may only be management needing viewer access so possibly only a dozen users on top of the developers in that case).
I've tried to work this out for myself but there seems to be a lot of confusion around what is Business Objects (the product) and who Business Objects the company are and where Crystal fits in with everything.
For a bog-standard implementation of a BOU what is absolutely necessary?
    Thanks
    Nic

    Hi Nic,
As you've described Universe is a meta data layer in between Database and Reporting Layer. You could create reports using Desktop Intelligence, Web Intelligence, Web Intelligence Rich Client and even Crystal Reports. DeskI, WebI Rich, Crystal Reports do  require client installations and you have an added advantage of using local data sources like excel and create reports. WebI also creates reports but you don't need any separate client installer for it.
For the ball park figure I'd contact Sales Team...
Your question regarding what is absolutely necessary, there are lot more things need to be taken into consideration like below
    1) What are the repeorting needs at a little detailed level?
How would it help: Though there are several reporting tools for users and their reporting needs, it helps in deciding on which of the reporting tools should be the prime ones. Like WebI can be used as Adhoc Reporting Tool once you design your universe.
    2) Where would you want these reports to be deployed or on what portal do you want to see reports?
How would it help: It helps in deciding what should be the presentation layer for the reports and how it should be designed. Business Objects has InfoView portal that comes default where you can deploy DeskI, WebI, Crystal Reports. Or if you need to use an existing sharePoint portal you'd need Integration with Sharepoint software.
    3) Do you need ETL tools to load your data?
How would it help: It helps in making recommendation on ETL process and if Business Objects Data Integrator is suitable for the scenario
    Hope this would help.

    Vijay

  • Business Objects universe Create disabled In SAP Data Services

    Hi ,
I am trying to to create Business Objects Universe from SAP Data Services . But create and update options are disabled. I have the Information design tool and SAP Data services on the same machine .
    Please see the below screenshot.
Please help me any settings I have to change to get enabled.
    Thanks & Regards,

    Hello Venkata Ramana Pandi,
As Manoj Dhyani mention in the above thread, try changing it into CWM format and give it a try.
    Follow the below steps:
Export the DS datastore in CWM format, select the datastore and enter a XML file name
Open the Universe Builder (this option will be in BOE Program menu), you have a option in Universe Builder to import XML exported from Data Services/Data Integrator, check if that creates your Universe successfully
to use Metadata Exchange do the following
    Open Data Services Desginer
Click on tools Menu -> Metadata Exchange
    In the Metadata Exchange window
Select Export Data Services metadata to a file
Select DI CWM as metadata format
enter location for xml file (C:\temp)
Select the datastore you want to create Universe for
    Click OK
Check for file named repo_export.xml in the C:\temp folder or the folder that you specified
    Open Universe Builder and Select
    Data Integrator bridge
and use the xml file as input to create universe

  • Importing of "Business Objects" universes to BI EE

    Hello,
Does anyone know ways how migrate Business Objects universes to BI EE business layer? Are there possibilities automate this?

I believe there is none as of now. Rather than an automating utility, since most of the conversion utilities will have some amount of limitations, i believe there are some consulting services available within and outside Oracle. One of the main reasons for this is it requires careful planning to do the conversion. The way BOBJ and OBI EE work are different.

    Hi Markus,
OHW internally uses the XPP Parser, which is the reason that we include that disclaimer in our documentation. I'm not sure whether or not products that redistribute OHW need to include that disclaimer in their documentation or not.

  • How to separate different views and parts of a single line of business(LOB) universal app for windows 8.1 with many users.

Hello am an intermediate Windows Phone/Store Developer. Am currently in the process of implementing a LOB app that will have three different types users, an admin, a student, a teacher . Depending on how a user logs in i would like certain pages to be exposed
to them and the rest to be hidden. The app will also store data temporally on a local db then sync regularly to an azure database(Can the recent entity framework 7 that supports store/phone apps allow code first databases or are there features still not fully
accessible in WinRT apps)...This i believe can handle but also kindly point me out to existing implemented resources/examples i will appreciate very much.
What am finding problematic is how to consume different app data stored by various users logged in for these different views. Will i need an asp web api is it really necessary cause i want to avoid it cause i have about three months to do it. I do not want
to create three different apps and one ASP Web AP,  i want one single app and an api if possible, i know windows usually sandboxes apps hence app to app communication will be hard if not impossible. So my question is, is it possible to implement different
user session management with a login (Windows Live ID) which i can abstract various parts of the app from them depending on the users login id in the app. E.g How can an admin logged in the same app as the student have access rights to certain pages in the
app that a student will not see. How do i route different users to certain pages and can isolated storage store these persisting as a setting.
How can i know which login id belongs to which of the three users? How do i then assign different access to different controls of the app with their id,provide custom views routes, access right, session management. I think i can do these without an ASP Web
API is It wise? Building pages in the apps is easy but i want users to see different views of the app instead of one standard app depending on there login id, how can the NAVIGATION URI be used here. How can azure and features like active directory, azure mobile
services. I know i have repeated the same things over and over and these might be complex for a free advise but as a windows dev these is my one stop shop. Any one with a view on how to approach these kindly show me the best directions. Thanks guys in advance.

My company has Business Objects and Management prefers to do reporting using the BO product. Also adding reports to OIM requires several database changes and a redeploy to push out the label changes, and that causes the skitters with Management. We have a team that is looking at creating a BO Universe for the OIM database, but as you know, a lot of display transformation work is done in the Java WebApp and that would need to be modeled in the SELECTs in the Universe.
