Terrible artifacts when creating my first DVD

Hi,
Cut a trailer for my film. When I burned a DVD using DVD Studio Pro the quality was horrible. The worst artifacitng I've ever seen. Shot this on the Panasonic DVX100 (original) in 24p Advanced mode.
Does anyone know why? I exported as Quicktime (self-contained). I did n ot use Compressor because I could not get it to work. I do not understand why I am having this problem. It really scare me because I thought I'd get good results with 24p video.

Encoding in DVDSP gives you less control to your encoding that using Compressor. I know you had some troubles:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1134895
but I'm sure the best is trying to go back and solve the Compressor issues.
How long in minutes is your movie? That's a key factor to decide the encoding settings. I think I made the same question to you in other thread in FCP forum.
Did you try using Compressor as standalone app and encode there your self contained movie?

  • Disk Utility stops responding when creating a CD/DVD image

I'm using a PowerBook G4 (Intel processor) and recently updated from 10.5.8 to Snow Leopard.
I've been copying some personal DVDs (Non-commercial so not copy protected) with Disk Utility.
It was working just fine under 10.5.8, and for the first DVD after updating.
However now when I try to create an image from the DVD, the dialog box opens as though it is
reading from the DVD (As usual) but the progress bar doesn't move.
When I try to cancel, the spinning beach ball comes up and end up having to force quit.
I have tried with various DVDs but the result is the same.
I have shutdown and restarted, and even reset the P-RAM for good measure, but to no effect.
There is no Disk Utility file in the preferences folder so I was unable to trash preferences.
FYI:  I bought the computer in Japan so I am using the Japanese OS, but I expect that should
make no difference to the problem.
Any suggestions for troubleshooting would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance!!

Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.
Isolating an issue by using another user account
If the problem is still there, try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account.  Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

  • OWB 11g rel2 Client install. Error when creating my first Workspace

We just installed Oracle 11g rel2 Std edition database on Oracle Linux. No problem connection with Toad. Everything works fine.
I have just installed OWB 11.2.0.1 client on Windows 7 and Windows 7 in XP mode. Having the same problem on both installations mentioned below.
No I am about to create my first Workspace in Repository Assistant where I get an error:
    - Step 1, Database information
    - Host xxx
    - Port 1521
    - Oracle Service Name: instance name (the one I use in Toad that works)
-SQL Net Connection: Checked  Seems that I have to use this when I connect with system user later on in the wizard.
    - Step 2 Manage Warehouse Builder workspaces, checked
    - Step 3 Create a new Warehouse Builder workspace
    - Step 4 Create a workspace with a new user as workspace owner, checked
    - Step 5 DBA Information: user system, Password: xxx
    - Step 6 Enable Optional Features: Non selected
    - Step 7 Workspace Owner(new)
    - Workspace Owners’s User Name: owb_owner
    - Password x 2
    - Workspace Name: workspace_dev
    - Step 8 OWBSYS Information:
    - User Name: OWBSYS (OWBSYS and OWBSYS_AUDIT accounts are unlocked)
    - Password: xxx
    - Then I click next, and the error information are as follow:
“OWB software with the compatible version must be installed locally on the database server machine. If it is already installed, please acquire the DBA user credentials, an run the SQL script owb/UnifiedRepos/remote_owb_install.sql on the database server machine. This creates a database directory named ‘OWB_REMOTE_ADMIN’ that the remote installation will access to read the database servers OWBHOME/owb/bin/admin directory. Relaunch the Repository Assistant or execute OWB scripting command OMBSEED to seed the repository.
Since we have installed the Oracle 11g rel 2 database, the OWB are already in that installation. I also tried to run the remote_owb_install.sql and applied the OWBHOME/owb/bin/ when running sql. I still have the same problem.
Anyone experienced this and have a solution to solve this?

  • I could use some tips when creating a SD DVD from HD masters

I have been having problems with this workflow from day one. First, some background. I have been producing an hour long football highlight show for local cable for over 20 years. it is extremely popular in our community and I couldn't be happier but over the years the quality has gotten worse when broadcast even though my quality has gotten better. When I ran the program from 3/4 SP tape years ago,  it looked great. But now, the cable system will only provide a SD DVD player with composite out (yikes) for broadcast.
I shoot and master in 720p 60. I have DVD SP, Toast Titanium, and iDVD available to create my disc to give to the cable company. Also, it must have a simple menu so the playback machine can begin play at the correct time. Can anyone give me a few tips on how to simply burn the master to the DVD for the best looking playback possible? Any tips will be appreciated.
    Cheers.
    Tom

I'm not sure about the "720p60" but the normal way of dealing with both SD and HD videos is Share>Export Media and leave everything in the default position.
Drop the resulting file in iDVD.
I suggest you test it using a very short video, maybe a couple of minutes of typical shots, and burn it on a DVD-RW so you are not wasting discs.
This way it will only take about 10 minutes to see the results and you can test out different techniques, if necessary, very quickly and at no cost.

  • ORA-20001 when creating my first workspace.

    Hi,
I'm sure this must be an easy one to answer.
I am trying to create a new workspace in my new install of Application Express 3.1.2.00.02 (Oracle 11g 11.1.0.6.0).
    I get the error:
ORA-20001: Request 1030503661329735 could not be processed. -20001 ORA-20001: Unable to create user. ORA-01031: insufficient privileges
Do I need to grant something to my ADMIN user?
Surely this should have been done as part of the install.
(I did a quick search and couldn't see the same problem anywhere else)

  • Creating my first table

    Hi Guys,
I'm having a really basic problem when creating my first table using Oracle Enterprise Manager (11g)
    What I've done is:
    1. Log into Enterprise Manager 11g using sys as SYSDBA
    2. Created a tablespace called APPLICATIONS
    3. Created a user account called SAMPLEAPPLICATION and set its default tablespace to APPLICATIONS
    4. Then, without logging out, I've tried to create a new table in the SAMPLEAPPLICATION schema and using the APPLICATIONS tablespace
But unfortunately I'm getting an error message saying something like "Failed to commit: ORA-01950: no privileges on tablespace 'APPLICATIONS' "
The thing I'm not understanding is why the sys user would not be able to create a table on the APPLICATIONS tablespace.
Is the sys user specifically not allowed to do these things because you're not supposed to do these sorts of mundane operations with that account, or is perhaps something else going on?
Many thanks to anyone who can advise
    Simon

    yep,
What I have found is when creating a table even logged in as SYS even logged in as sys if you try and create a table as another user that user needs permission and quota to own the object.
    as an example
    logged in as sys
    SQL> create user myschema identified by temp ;
    SQL> grant create session to my schema ;
    SQL> grant create table to my schema ;
    SQL> create table myschema.mytable (x varchar2(20), z varchar2(20)) tablespace users ;
    create table myschema.mytable (x varchar2(20), z varchar2(20)) tablespace users
    ERROR at line 1:
ORA-01950: no privileges on tablespace 'USERS'
    SQL> alter user myschema quota unlimited on users ;
    User altered.
    SQL> create table myschema.mytable (x varchar2(20), z varchar2(20)) tablespace users ;
    Table created.

    Hi
Time needed can depend on several things.
    • less than 5 GB free space on Start-up (Mac OS) hard disk = Redicolous long times AND a DVD that most probably will not work OK
Medicine - I never go under 25GB free space
    • Use of strange file formats into iDVD - can force it to de-code first then re-encode - this can take long long times
    I use
Video - StreamingDV as from miniDV tape Cameras - or QuickTime Movies Converted to StreamingDV
    Audio - .aiff 16-bit 48 kHz - (no .mp3, .wma etc)
    • Use of old Mac - My G4 600MHz took about 24 hour per hour movie. my dG5 - about 2 hours per hour (I use Pro Quality encoding)
    • Pro Quality encoding - takes about x2 to process a movie

There are many ways to produce slide shows using iPhoto, iMovie or iDVD and some limit the number of photos you can use (iDVD has a 99 chapter (slide) limitation).
If what you want is what I want, namely to be able to use high resolution photos (even 300 dpi tiff files), to pan and zoom individual photos, use a variety of transitions, to add and edit music or commentary, place text exactly where you want it, and to end up with a DVD that looks good on both your Mac and a TV - in other words end up with and end result that does not look like an old fashioned slide show from a projector - you may be interested in how I do it. You don't have to do it my way, but the following may be food for thought!
Firstly you need proper software to assemble the photos, decide on the duration of each, the transitions you want to use, and how to pan and zoom individual photos where required, and add proper titles. For this I use Photo to Movie. You can read about what it can do on their website:
    http://www.lqgraphics.com/software/phototomovie.php
(Other users here use the alternative FotoMagico:  http://www.boinx.com/fotomagico/homevspro/ which you may prefer - I have no experience with it.)
Neither of these are freeware, but are worth the investment if you are going to do a lot of slide shows. Read about them in detail, then decide which one you feel is best suited to your needs.
Once you have timed and arranged and manipulated the photos to your liking in Photo to Movie, it exports the file to iMovie  as a DV stream. You can add music in Photo to Movie, but I prefer doing this in iMovie where it is easier to edit. You can now further edit the slide show in iMovie just as you would a movie, including adding other video clips, then send it to iDVD 7, or Toast,  for burning.
You will be pleasantly surprised at how professional the results can be!
To simply create a slide show in iDVD 7 onwards from images in iPhoto or stored in other places on your hard disk or a connected server, look here:

I create a project w/iMovie and I have two problems:  When I try to finalize the project iMovie crashes; when I share to DVD sometimes it crashes also; if I can successfully send it to DVD and then burn a DVD there are wavy lines on the screen.  I'm uising photos in my project, not video.  Help!

You can split a project in two by doing this.
    1) Go to the Project Library View.
    2) Select your project, and click FILE/DUPLICATE PROJECT. Give it a name like "your project name - part 1".
    3) Do this again. This time name it "your project name - part 2"
    4) Open Part 1 for editing. Delete everything in the second half.
    5) Open Part 1 for editing. Delete everything in the first half of the project.
At the end you should have your original project, plus the same project in two parts.

  • Issue when creating CDS artifacts.

    Hello Experts
I'm still following the Open SAP tutorial for development in Hana, i was trying to create a CDS artifact but i'm getting the following error:

I thought that the DEV Schema was supposed to be there for using it during tests, is there anything else that is missing for been able to work with it?

Generally when creating a Word file from either a Mac or Win7 pc and opening it on two different machines (either one first) it always prompts that the file is open and will be opened as read only.
However opening a CSS file does not prompt that it is already open on or from any machine which is causing code edits to be lost.
What we found from out testing:
    - The file can be saved from one user to the server and WILL NOT PROMPT on other machines until the saving machine has the Dreamweaver program closed completely
    - The file can be closed and  Dreamweaver minimised to the launch bar but it still will not register on other machines that it has been changed.
    - Also, until the  Dreamweaver program is closed on the machines, it will continue to open it's saved version of the file.
    Example Scenario:
    - User 1 opens test.css (which is 2000 lines) and adds some code to the end of the file to bring it up to 2500 lines
    - Meanwhile User 2 opens test.css as well (opens as 2000 lines as User 1’s edits have not yet been saved) and adds in code to bring it to 2300 lines
    - User 1 saves his file and closes it - but  Dreamweaver is still open.
    - User 2 also saves his file and leaves  Dreamweaver  open.
    - The server will report the size and last edit of the file the same as User 2 as he was the last person to save it (and if you open from the Win7 Machine it will show as User 2’s 2300 line version)
    - If User 1 then open's the file again (from either the 'recent' in Dreamweaver OR clicking on the file directly in Finder...which version opens.... The version that User 1 saved! Not the true version on the server, but the version that User 1 edited and saved with 2500 lines in it.
    - Same for User 2, he will open 'his' version with 2300 lines in.
    Other information:
    - Files are opened directly from the server
    - Sometimes the users will save incrementally and re-open
    - Most of the time users will save incrementally and keep the files open
    - The users will never not save incrementally and just save when closing the file once finished
    - The users are usually working on the files all day
    - It is always the bottom lines of code that are lost. It could be a case of the two versions being mixed up and cutting off the newly added lines based on the line count (possibly).
It is as if Dreamweaver is holding a cache of the version locally and then only properly looking back to the server when it has been completely closed. It is very difficult to see how the server is causing such an impact on these files, there are very few logs which are giving any indication to the root cause of the problems.
Anyone know if this is a known issue?
Is there a way that there can be a featured implemented on the server that doesn't allow another user to open a file if it is already open on another machine?
    Thanks

Your server file handling has nothing, and really nothing to do with Adobe software. If files don't get locked for (over-)writing and/or lose connection to the program opening them, then your server is misconfigured. It's as plain and simple and that. Anything from "known file types"/ file associations not being set correctly, MIME types being botched, crooked user privileges and file permissions, missing Mac server extensions, delayed file writing on the server, generic network timeout issues and what have you. Either way, you have written a longwinded post with no real value since you haven't bothered to provide any proper technical info, most notably about the alleged server. Either way, the only way you can "fix" it is by straightening out your server and network configuration, not some magic switch in Adobe's software.

  • Why do I get an error message saying unable to use disk when creating a DVD

I have successfully burned two DVD's of a group of three I am burning of my last vacation pictures. I have successfully created WMV files for each day of the trip which I have combined to create the three DVD's so they won't be too lengthy. I created a menu with main menu and stop menu markers. When I went to burn the third disk, which is the shortest of the group the program would encode to the 96% and then the disk would eject and it would give an errow message saying the disk was not compatable. This was the same type of DVD-RW disks I used on the two successful disks. I tried redoing the burn 3  times with each time getting to 96% on the encription and then the same error message occurred. I used fresh disks each time. On the forth try I cut the number of WMV files down to 3 to make the DVD half as long. The same thing happened at the 96th% spot of the encription process. Nothing had ever been put on the disks. I am using top quality Memorex DVD-RW disks. Please let me know what else I can do. I am very frustrated. Oh yes, I closed the program down each time I got the error and also shut down and restarted the computer afer each error. I really want to finish this project as I have been working on it now for two weeks non stop. Thank you.

Good, that gets one possibility out of the way.
Since the error about the disc indicates that the Transcoding has already finished, I think that we can probably rule out the next step, but let's look anyway.
Now, for Transcoding to DVD, PrE uses 2-pass Encoding, so it would seem that this problem is comng right at the end of the second pass, at the end of the Timeline. Look very closely at that point, and see if there is anything odd there. Things like gaps in the Video of a Timeline, or sometimes Assets that are not proper, can cause Transcoding to stop. Anything there? [I think that with a disc error, Transcoding HAS completed, and the progress bar is just lagging slightly behind, but more questions are probably needed.]
Last, what brand of blank media are you using? The reason that I ask this is that some companies, like Memorex, buy the cheapest disc that day, and rebrand them, so in a spindle of 25, you might end up with blank discs by different mfgrs., and some can be much better, than others.
    Good luck,

  • Quality great in imovie, great idvd, terrible when creating a disk image

Help! I've created a 30 minute film with very simple over-black titles, some fades, and a scrolling block of text at the beginning. The quality is great in imovie, great when I 'preview' in idvd, but once I create a disk image - it's blocky, the titles stutter and are choppy - essentially it looks unusable when viewed through the DVD player application.
Any ideas what's going on? I haven't burned it to disc yet, as I wanted to check the disk image.
Assets haven't been previously encoded, and the setting is 'best quality' 'PAL' output.

The quality is great in imovie, great when I 'preview' in idvd
iDVD's preview uses the raw assets - think of it as being 'for position only'.

  • IDVD just disappears (in the encoding phase) when creating a DVD

I have this problem on different themes and can occur when creating single as well as dual layer disks.
iDVD suddenly disappears and disk utility pops up (presumably because the blank DVD is now available to the OS).
I checked the console - though it's fairly meaningless to me - and found the following:

Please, what is going on and can I fix it somehow? It's no joke when this happens especially when you are on a deadline to produce the DVD.

    Greetings,
Did you try my suggestions including the caches and plists?
When burning from iDVD, make sure Disk Utility is not open. Having two program running that access the DVD burner at the same time might add complexity to the issue.
Can ANYONE at APPLE confirm that this will NOT happen if I upgrade to iLIFE 09?????
As stated in the Terms of Use we all agreed to when signing up for the Discussions, this is a user forum for users to talk to users. To contact Apple: www.apple.com/contact
As the issue you described is not a known issue in any version of iDVD ever, it is not something that was "fixed" in any new release. However, reinstalling all the core components (like installing a new version or just reinstalling period) can resolve issues with the Application itself. If the issue is with the OS then reinstalling the iDVD Application (which didn't change much from '08 to '09) will not make much of a difference.
    Try reinstalling iDVD: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3249
I would also suggest reseting the hardware of the computer itself:

  • I created in iMovie, and extracted audio from one of the clips to use in the title sequence.  All is well, export to iDVD and it plays OK, but when I burn the DVD the audio for the titles does not play. Any suggestions?

I am on a MacBook Pro with OS 10.6.7 running iMovie '11 and iDVD 7.1.1.  Thanks for any input.
