Terrible download speeds

Just recently my download speeds will not go above 700mbps.  My router stats seem the same as usual:
But every speed test I have done recently puts my speed at lower than 700mbps almost as though my account has been restricted.  Is it possible the IP profile on my account may be wrong - any help would be appreciated.

  • Terrible download speeds - modem problem???

Hi there, I have recently complained to Telstra about the terrible download speeds and the lights on my modem (the the ethernet, wireless and internet always flashing green).  I have ADLS Elite which is a joke when it takes so long on most days to dlownload.  There was a problem with the line which they reckon they fixed but who knows.  Could it possibly be a problem with this modem?  I have had the same one for about 5 years now and I reckon it has been a problem from the start as my speeds have never really been very high.  I am tired of having to contact Telstra all the time and am seriously considering going elsewhere. I hope someone can help.  By the way the moedn is a Thompson Gateway. Thanking you. Regards Yvonne

If there is issues with the light, and they have ruled out an issue with the line (as in they say that has been resolved) then it is quite possible being 5 years old that it is a modem issue.
If you are still under contract then Telstra will usually replace your modem for no charge as they usually will cover it as a warranty replacement as long as you are still contracted with them...
As it is an ADSL connection there are many factors which can restrict your ability to get higher speeds, congestion on the line, noise on the line, distance from the exchange... so even if the modem is a part of it, being on an ADSL1 port instead of an ADSL2+ port, or you might be at a distance where lower speeds are all you will obtain...
I can get the frustration of having low speeds, however depending on what the issue is, even changing providers might not help with the connection, but I would suggest having a word with the Disconnection team, they are pretty good at resolving issues, they will see what they can do to get the connection fixed, if required they should also be able to arrange the replacement modem... Plus they are in Adelaide during normal hours, on 132200 and say "Disconnect" then "no" if you want to relocate.

  • Terrible download speed with Infinity 2 (less than...

I was a relatively early adopter of BT infinity.  When I first signup I recieved a consistent 70mbps+ down 80mbps up.
Over the last few months this has dropped to around 40mbps down and 12mbps up.
I posted here regarding the issue, contacted BT, and even Emailed the tech support guys recommended here on this very forum.
Unfortunately nothing improved, however since 40mbps down was okay for almost everything I needed to do I decided to leave it.
Now however, the situation has become dire.  For the last month my download speed has been consistently less than 4mbps with my upload speed being 2-3x as fast!
The BT speedtester refuses to complete due to the test taking too long. However I have managed to get a screenshot from speedtest.net.
To make matters worse, webpages down't always seem to complete, with many requests eventually timing out.
I am at a complete loss and would like some advice on where to go from here.  I have for all intents and purposes lost faith in the standard BT customer service having spent hours on the phone with them before when my speed dropped to 40mbps a few months ago.
Any advice would be very much appreciated.

    Hi
I also am having the exact same issue. I am on the phone now and they are telling me now that is all my line can handle.
This is disgusting, the service is disgusting, cannot get an engineer out. For over 10 months i could get 60mbps steady downloads now i can't
    even stream a youtube video!!
even though i have another infinity 2 line in the downstairs living room getting 65mbps steady downloads from the same exchange.

  • Terrible Download speeds in Hoboken, NJ on VDSL...

    Hello,
I'm on a VDSL setup in Hoboken and have been experiencing awful download speeds all day.  Upload speeds are at the normal 5MB range.
I'm provisioned for 20MB but usually get around 23-24MB DL speeds.  Today I'm lucky if I can get 4MB.  I've tried various speed tests, wireless and wired connections and haven't really changed anything about my setup.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

have you rebooted the vdsl modem when you were doing your reboots?

I started downloading a rental movie on apple tv, but I live in a rural area with terrible Internet download speed...is there anyway to stop the download, and resume downloading, onto my iPad when I have access in an urban setting with high speed Internet?

Yes, to be honest I was a little surprised myself. But it absolutely didn't connect when plugged into the test socket (I even tried to force a connection from the Home Hub manager but it wasn't having it). It is definitely the master socket. The only extension is a small piece of (engineer installed) phone cable to link the hub and the master socket (because the socket and mains power are unhelpfully on opposite walls of the hallway).
I ran the Java download for Google anyway and it only took about an hour. The speedtester results are as follows:
Download speed achieved during the test was - 109 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 50-250 Kbps.
     Additional Information:
     Your DSL Connection Rate :2560 Kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 Kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 135 Kbps
I don't as a rule disconnect / reboot the hub; today it has been dropping off on its own, while several days ago I tried a few reboots just to try and get a connection.
Additional info - my exchange is actually called Claypole Fenton (or vice versa). Whatever, my profile has probably been welded to 135k for days and days.
    Cheers
    Nick

  • Terrible upload speed (download is fine)

I had Infinity installed back in July and whilst the download speed fluctuates it always stays pretty close to the 31Mbps which is the maximum that my line can support.
However my upload speed rarely gets above 0.7Mbps, which is just awful. Occasionally I hit the heady heights of 1.5Mbps, but it doesn't last for long. The upstream ip profile is 10Mbps.
I've done countless speed tests over many weeks (wired & wireless), and power cycled my boxes, but nothing seems to make any difference.
Another annoyance is the ping rate, which fluctuates from about 45ms to 125ms. Most of the time it hovers around 100ms.
I've emailed BT about all of this in the past, but they never responded. Every time I try to call tech support I'm told they are "very busy and to expect a long delay", which kind of puts me off hanging on the phone.
Can anyone explain why my download speed (approx 95% of theoretical maximum) can be so much better than my upload speed (approx 7% of theoretical maximum)? Is this within the range of 'normal', or does it sound like a fault?
The BT Speedtest said there was no performance problem with my service at this time.
    Thanks for your help.

Rather than start a new thread I thought I would update this one.
Short story is, after I initially raised this fault with BT back in October they sent an engineer out who (after much head scratching) replaced the wall-mounted modem and the problem was resolved. My upload speeds weren't amazing (about 5Mbps on average), but were WAY better than what I had been getting. Upload speeds remained steady at about 30Mbps.
BUT THEN... in February I started getting frequent disconnections. Several times each day the line would drop, and then take up to 10 minutes to come back. Ping rates shot through the roof (from about 80ms to about 120ms) and my upload speed came crashing back down to 0.70Mbps.
Also this time, just to add a bit more irritation, the frequent line drops have cranked my upload IP profile down to just 15Mbs, even though when I upgraded to 'unlimited' Infinity a week or two ago it said my max line speed should be in the mid-40s.
So now, my stats are as follows:
    DOWNLOAD = 15.46Mbps (max is 15.97)
    UPLOAD = 0.63Mpbs (max is 20.00)
The BTW Performance Test said "The test result has indicated that you should contact your ISP for further assistance."
So here I am, mods   Please Help!!!

  • TS1717 The download speed for movies is terribly slow.  It took hours to download.  Any suggestions?

Any suggestions for improving download speeds on movies. It took hours to download my first purchase.  I've used Amazon and Netflix for renting movies and had reasonable download speeds.

    Hi Travelling fool 101,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities. Based on what you stated, it sounds like you were able to update the iPad but were eventually able to. I would recommend that you read this article, it may be able to help the issue.
Resolve issues with an over-the-air iOS update - Apple Support
Download takes a long time, or you can't reach update server
iOS updates require a persistent Internet connection, and the time it takes to download the update will vary according to the size of the update and your Internet speed. You can use your device normally while downloading the iOS update, and iOS will notify you when you can install the update. To improve the speed of the download, avoid downloading other content.

Kind of getting fed up now, I either have really slow speeds or inconsistent connection. I am a heavy user, with playing games online and streaming movies and tv, so I pay for unlimited up to 20mb bb. Its not like I expect 20mb bb, but a little bit of consistency would be wonderful.

  • Q180 Slow Download Speeds

Just got my Q180 setup last night. It is connected to my Wireless N network. Noticed that while watching YouTube videos is was running out of buffer frequently. Decided to run a speed test on www.speedtest.net. Results show .65mb down speed and 6.5 mb up speed. My service should be 20mb down and 10mb up. So the up speed seems accurate, but the download speed is TERRIBLE, it's running at about 2% what it should be. I ran the same speed test using my laptop, from the same location and achieved 18mbps down and 6.5 up.
Is this a limitation of the Q180, or is there something wrong or a setting that I have to set to fix this issue? Honestly this thing is pretty much useless to me without a better download speed, after all, just about the only reason I got this was to do internet stuff on my livingroom TV.
    Thanks,
    Josh
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Unfortunately, I still have the same problem with this computer. I get very slow wireless connection speeds. I've tried 3 different wireless routers. I've moved it around. I've updated the wireless driver. Still get an average of 1-2mbps download speed and .5mbps upload speed on a 20down/10up connection. Each time I think the problem is resovled, the next time I use the computer, it's back again. The thing is pretty useless. I've never been able to turn it on and just go watch a video on YouTube on my TV, which was more or less the only reason I bought this thing, so it was a waste of money. And no help comes from the forums apparently either.

  • Insanely slow upload speeds with normal download speeds -- can anyone help?

I have done LOTS of troubleshooting and I'm coming up blank. I've just moved from CA to HI and have a new ISP, but other machines in the house are not having this issue. I'm having a very difficult time figuring out why I can no longer upload files larger than 1 mb without lots of network stalling and eventual timeouts using most upload tools.
    Here are the facts:
    * It's only the upload speed: downloading is just fine on this machine.
    * This machine WAS fine: No problem with uploads from this machine before I moved from CA. I've had it for about a year.
    * Not the new cable internet: We also have a brand new Macbook Pro AND a PC using the same modem and connection and neither have trouble with upload speed.
    * It's not the tool, the file, or the server I'm trying to upload to: have tried uploading various files, using various web interface tools, to different servers, (flickr uploader, blog upload tool,) including ftp from the command line -- same upload problems. Command line ftp doesn't time out like these other services, but takes a really really long time with lots of stalls (7:13 minutes for 2.1 mb?!)
    * File sharing over our network between this machine and the Macbook Pro are lightning fast.
    * Behavior is the same using airport OR built-in ethernet (even tried two different ethernet cables)
    * Behavior is the same whether I use our internet connection or 'borrow' bandwidth from a neighbor's wireless connection (although I'm pretty sure everyone around here uses the same service?)
It seems to be some strange combination of this machine and my connection? I am stumped and really need to be able to upload files for working remotely!
Any advice would be much appreciated!
    thanks,
    Enola

So after MUCH research and back-and-forth, it appears that my problem here is the upload bandwidth provided by our ISP. They acknowledge there is a problem in our area with upload speed (download speed is excellent) and are apparently working on it. I am still baffled as to why this problem is so much more obvious on my mac mini than my husband's macbook pro, but I'm sure it has to do with all kinds of different variables. We both tried some speedtest sites like the one you mentioned, and we both get crappy upload bandwidth and lots of stalling. At least I know it's not that my machine has something terribly wrong with it. For now, I am making do!
    thanks for your advice!

  • Ipad mini with retina display has really slow and laggy streaming but very high download speed

I just got my ipad mini with retina display yesterday. The regular internet works fine as far as I can tell. I tried streaming video from watch espn, netflix, and youtube, and all three apps were so slow I couldn't watch anything. I have a high download speed too, it is 15 Mbps. I tried turning off the QOS engine in my router, and my download speed was up to 30 Mbps, and I still had the same terrible streaming quality. I tried changing the DNS as well, and this did nothing. I tried doing all the restarting and other "quick fixes," and nothing seems to work. Can anybody help me?

I requested your post be moved to the iPad forum. This is the Mac Mini desktop forum

  • New w520 has erratic download speeds

I bought a w520 last week.  It's a lovely machine, but unfortunately it's frequently had terrible wireless download speeds straight out of the box.  Wired, it was 11+ Mbps.  Wireless, I've hit a high of 6+ and a low of .2.  It is extremely common for me to get between .2 and .75 Mbps.  Our two desktops get 6+.  Our 8-year old laptop gets 6+ when sitting right next to the new laptop.  I've been testing using bandwidthplace.com.
Anyone have any ideas?  I've got three weeks to figure this out - that's when NewEgg's return window closes.

  • ITunes 7.0 very slow download speed

I just updated to iTunes 7.0 and I have noticed a huge drop in my download speed. I have a cable modem and connect at average speeds for my area. I don't have any issues with the internet or any other program.
I bought the first episode of Grey's Anatomy and it is taking way too long to download. It has been going now for about 8 hours and still says it has 11 hours left. Before I upgraded I noticed that the steaming music used for previews was constantly "buffering" so I thought upgrading to 7.0 would help, I guess not. Has anyone else had such slow download problems, and is there anything I can do about it?

I have the exact same problem. I don't download video, but the music and podcast download speeds are terrible. I am going to try to revert back to the previous version if possible. There are several posts about how to do that.
