Terrible Loss of Contrast Playing iMovie slideshow

I am stumped! I have tried to compile a slideshow using iPhoto and iMovie. These are old black and white photos that were scanned. When I burn them to a DVD they look okay on my monitor, but when I play the DVD on a big screen TV or in a large projection format the facial contrast is blown out to almost white on most photos. I've tried adjustiing in Photoshop before sending the jpeg's directly into iPhoto or iMovie. Nothing seems to work. Also, when I use the Ken Burns effect there is noticible pixilation in the movement. Can anyone help me?

Besides calibrating the monitor (..and its 'theta' ..no, sorry: 'gamma'..) what about the TV / projector?
Many are notoriously incorrectly set up ..just go into any TV shop and see the range of different brightnesses/contrasts/tuning and clarity on all the different TVs.
It may be that your monitor's OK, but the TV is wildly out, and set to too high a contrast and incorrect brightness setting. Many modern TVs adjust their own brightness and contrast to match the general 'ambient' brightness in a room, so that the picture's bright enough to watch with the curtains open in daylight. As the room gets darker, the TV adjusts its own settings downwards (reduces it own brightness & contrast) to match.
Many projectors show little fine detail, but just 'blast' pictures at a screen to give maximum impact.
I'd try a variety of different TVs. Oh, and TVs don't have the fine resolution (..nor generally do projectors..) which monitors have. So you'll almost always see far more detail and gradation on a monitor than on a TV. TVs are built for watching moving pictures from across the room, or from several feet away, and not for looking at static pictures with fine detail from only a foot or so away, as you do with a monitor.
So don't expect too much from a TV..

  • Apple TV no longer plays iPhoto slideshows (individually)

    I have been using AppleTV for a couple of years, primarily to play iPhoto slideshows to music on our TV's. With a recent update (either to Apple TV, iTines or iPhoto, not sure, but I think it changed after an Apple TV update) we can no longer watch our individual iPhoto slideshows (By individual slide shows, I mean we used to be able to choose what slide show or album we wanted to play with music on the Apple TV. i.e.: vacation slideshow, birthday slideshow, Christmas slideshow, etc...) Now when you select what photos you want to share in iTunes, I check those albums & slideshows I want available but some do not appear on Apple TV  and those that do appear are automatically combined (for example it will combine Vacation and Christams slideshows into one massive slide show and their is no way to select one or the other.) Until a month or two ago this was not the case. I know I can create slideshows and save them to iMovie/iTunes or burn to disc but I do not want to do that, I like keeping them in iPhoto so they can constantly be added to and altered, thats the fun of it!
    Any ideas or known fixes would be appriciated. I love how Apple is always changing things for the better, but every so often they update software and end up taking away features that I use! It can be frustrating!
    Thanks in adavnce for your help!

    I cannot figure out how to move or convert an existing 'slideshow' to an 'album'. (in the end, all I really need to do is move the pix from a given slideshow to an album so I can view it as a slide show on Apple TV) I don't mind if the slideshows are shuffled on the TV as long as I can keep each slide show seperate. I basically use my iPhoto slideshows as a drop off point so we can watch them on Aplle TV. I never really do much with them in iPhoto except add new photos to existing shows now and then, I had the slideshows set to shuffle on Apple TV anyway. If I could figure out how to convert each slide show to its own album that would probably work. (re-creating each slide show is not a good option since some of my family slideshows contain hundreds or in some cases over a thousand photos). I've tried dragging the slide show to "albums" catagory but that doesnt work.
    Thank you for the quick response!

  • Can I drop an IMovie Slideshow with music into IDVD?

    Hello,
    I created (and it took a long time) a slideshow with music using IMovie. Now I want to burn it to a DVD and am realizing I need to put it into IDVD. I saved it to my desktop and then dropped it into the IDVD Magic program but it does not save the slideshow. Or if it does, I can't seem to figure out how to play it. I also can't figure out how to choose the picture for the IDVD theme page. Any help with how to burn my IMovie slideshow on a DVD using either IDVD or some other way, would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

    Or if it does, I can't seem to figure out how to play it.
    Click on the "Preview" button in the bottom left corner of the iDVD window. For more details go to iDVD Help: >_Making a Magic iDVD_
    I also can't figure out how to choose the picture for the IDVD theme page.
    Once you have added your slideshowGo to Help: _Adding images and movies to drop zones_
    Any help with how to burn my IMovie slideshow on a DVD using either IDVD or some other way, would be greatly appreciated.
    I am not familiar with the workings Magic DVD, but if you have already created the slideshow, it might be just as easy to follow the regular route in making this project. If you wish to try this, follow these steps.
    1. Open iDVD, select to create a new project, and name it.
    2. Select the theme.
    3. Import your slideshow into iDVD. Go to your movies folder (or wherever your project is saved), and drag the iMovie icon (the one with the star) to the window of your iDVD project. Avoid drop zones.
    4. You can add photos to the drop zones by clicking on the "Media" Button in the bottom right corner, and then on "Photos". Just drag and drop the photos to their desired location.
    5. Preview by clicking on the triangle at the bottom of the window.
    6. When you are ready to burn, first go to File>Save as disk image. This will allow you to have a final check of your project before burning to DVD. You can see how this project will actually play when played on a regular DVD player. If everything is fine, you can then burn the DVD using Disk Utility.
    I hope this helps.

  • Imovie slideshow project to DVD

    Do I need iDVD to convert my iMovie slideshow project to a dvd and play in a dvd player?

    Hi
    First of all - You need a DVD authoring program as iDVD. (No way around this - but there are free alt. as Burn™)
    In iMovie'13 (vers 10.0.x) - Select SideShow (Video) project.
    Share to file and as 460p - NOTHING ELSE !
    Close iMovie and open iDVD
    Import the Shared file
    Select Encoding quality
    In iDVF pref / Advanced - Burn Speed max 4 rather x2)
    Save as a DiskImage
    Test this to see all is OK
    Burn the DVD
    I only use - Verbatim DVD-R as they works greatly to me - NEVER Memorex, NoName or other cheap media = PROBLEMS
    Good Luck - Yours Bengt W

  • IMovie SlideShow Project to IDVD?

    I am very new to IDVD. I have ILife'11 to be delivered and installed, sometime soon.  When IDVD is installed, I envision a simple click and drag or share option to transfer my IMovie Slideshow to IDVD. Right? My project in IMovie is very large (834 clips) with transitions and audio. I like what was created in IMovie and would like to see this on a DVD for sharing with others. Will the content created in IMovie be transferred over to IDVD? Would I select the Magic DVD portion of the IDVD menu, to create the DVD?  If you create a new project and import a large amount of photos to an IDVD slideshow, how do you then accomplish attaching audio to a large number of photos? Is the process, similar to IMovie audio? Thanks.

    From iMovie 9 and earlier select the Share ➙ Media Browser menu option.
    Open your iDVD project, go to the Media Browser/Movies pane and drag the movie into your menu window being careful to avoid any drop zones that may be there.
    For iMovie 10 export the movie out of iMovie with Size = 480p and manually drag the file into your iDVD menu window.
    To add audo to an iDVD slideshow of stills first create a playlist in iTunes of the tracks you want to use.  In the slideshow window go to the Media/Audio pane at the right, find the playlist and drag it into the audio bin at the bottom.
    Follow this workflow to help assure the best qualty video DVD:
    Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option. This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
    To check the encoding mount the disk image, launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding is good.
    Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.

  • Imovie slideshow skips over some photos help!

    i made a movie composed of all still photos moving very quickly, but when i play the slideshow it skips over about ten photos. the photo before the photos that are skipped stays on the screen, while the red line passes over many of the photos. how can i get imovie to stop skipping my photos?

    In my case, the new 5G ipod was skipping virtually all the songs I had previously added from my own CD collection, but playing all others like mp3 files from CD-R or files downloaded from web, or itunes store (my old 3G had no problem playing them all). After much futzing around I found I could fix the skipping by slightly altering the info file on each of the affected songs. The easiest way to do this was on itunes choose edit--select all--right click on any song--choose "get info"--choose info tab--then insert a period or a dash or some other unobtrusive symbol in the comments section. You should see a green check mark appear next to the info section. Click OK.
    This symbol will now be added to every song's comments. But it cured my problem 100%.

  • How do i connect my computer to my tv to play iphoto slideshow please?

    Hi,
    I have a Macbook and was hoping to connect it to my tv ports to play a slideshow on the tv.  Not sure what type of cable to use and where to plug in?  It is a HDTV with HDMI so wondered if maybe I should connect to the stereo system itself.  I also tried making a CD slideshow aand play it on my dvd player.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thank you.

    If your TV has a memory card slot try exporting your slideshow as a QT movie file, put it on the memory card and try that.

  • How do you shuffle the image order when creating a new slideshow in apterture 3?  i would like to do this automatically when creating a new slideshow.  i see how you do it when you just play a slideshow.

    how do you shuffle the image order when creating a new slideshow in apterture 3?  i would like to do this automatically when creating a new slideshow.  i see how you do it with presets when you just play a slideshow, but i don't see an option to randomly shuffle the slide order when you create a new slideshow.  i know you can sort it by different fields, but i want it to be random.  thanks.

    If you want to rearrange images in random order you can try an AppleScript:
    retrieve a list of selected images from Aperture
    shuffe the list properly
    create an album in Aperture and add the images from the list to the album (make sure that the album set to be orederd manually)
    Here  is a sample script that shuffles the selected images and displays them in random order in Full Screen Mode:
    on removeItem(ims, i)
      -- remove the item at position "i" from a list ims
              if ims is {} then return {}
              if (length of ims is 1) then return {}
              if i < 2 then return rest of ims
              if (i = length of ims) then return (items 1 thru (i - 1) of ims)
              if i > (length of ims) then return ims -- should be error?
              return (items 1 thru (i - 1) of ims) & (items (i + 1) thru (length of ims) of ims)
    end removeItem
    on shuffle_items(ims)
      -- shuffle the items of the list "ims" randomly
              local numitems, ims_shuffled, nextrest, nextpick, i
              set numitems to length of ims
              if length of ims < 2 then return ims
              set ims_shuffled to {}
              set nextrest to ims
              repeat until nextrest is {}
                        set i to (random number (numitems - 1)) + 1
                        set nextpick to item i of nextrest
                        set beginning of ims_shuffled to nextpick
                        set numitems to numitems - 1
                        set nextrest to removeItem(nextrest, i)
              end repeat
              return ims_shuffled
    end shuffle_items
    on shuffleIms()
      -- retrieve the selected images from Aperture
      -- and display them in random order in full screen mode
              local imageSel, shuffled, i
              tell application "Aperture"
      activate
                        set imageSel to (get selection)
                        set shuffled to my shuffle_items(imageSel)
                        set fullscreen to true
                        if imageSel is {} then error "Please select some images."
                        repeat with i from 1 to count of shuffled
                                  reveal {item i of shuffled}
      delay 3 -- chnage that to the time you want
                        end repeat
                        set fullscreen to false
                        return shuffled
              end tell
    end shuffleIms
    shuffleIms()
    Some more code snippets to go from here:
    To create an album:
                        tell library 1
                                  if not (exists album "shuffledAlbum") then
      make new album with properties {name:"shuffledAlbum", image version:shuffled}
                                  end if
                        end tell
    And to add the images from the shuffled list to the album:
                        repeat with i from 1 to count of shuffled
                                  duplicate item i of shuffled to album "shuffledAlbum"
                        end repeat
    Regards

  • Is it possible to play a slideshow in less than full screen mode

    running 10.9.4, latest version of iPhoto. Is there any way I can play a slideshow at less than full screen mode? Like maybe half or quarter screen instead of having the app take over the entire screen? Very irritating. If I could run a slideshow as just one of several apps open on the desktop. Any way to do that?

    The slideshow will play inside the iPhoto viewer pane and not in full screen mode, if you use the "Preview" button and not the "Play" button.

  • In IOS 7, can I play a slideshow of my entire photo collection?

    I can't seem to find an answer to this.  In the new Photos app in IOS 7 I can't find a way to play a slideshow of all my photos.  I can only play slideshows of specific albums (not all) or create customized slideshows by selecting individual photos (way too tedious).
    Someone mentioned playing a slideshow of the Camera Roll album, however that album only contains about 60 images.  Not my entire collection of over 2000 images.
    Further, has the slideshow option from the lockscreen been removed as well?  I used to use my iPad as a digital photo frame, but I can no longer find that option in IOS 7.
    Any help anybody can provide is appreciated.
    (for reference, I'm using IOS version 7.0.3 which was released on or about Oct 23rd)
    Thanks

    The digital photo frame in the lock screen has apparently been removed. Your best best is to create a slide show in the photos app.

  • How to play a slideshow (with movies) from Iphoto to Apple TV second gen

    Hi,
    Does anyone know how to play a slideshow with movies, that I normally play perfect with Iphoto (I even can add music)to let it stream to the Apple tv second gen?
    So I have some movies on Imac from a holiday in Egypt and Iphoto alows me let it play as a movie.
    How can I setup my Apple TV so that it is the same on my Apple TV? So with nice fade ins and outs?
    Thanks

    Ok Thank you, but I have one more question.
    The Iphoto library is loaded with different movies and Photos. They are sorted by date.
    Is there a possibily to make folders in Iphoto. So that I have on folder called for example "vacation Egypt" and put all the movies in this folder within Iphoto?
    And then when I select this map it will make a slideshow from all this movies with music? Just like in Iphoto?

  • Music stopped playing during slideshow

    My slideshow was previously working fine. Playlist I selected would play no probelm with each slideshow. Have played them numerous times. Now suddenly the music will not play. Slideshow runs fine, Play music box is checked, correct playlist is chosen etc, etc...but no more sound. It is like the mute button is on. ITunes was just recently update, could this be the problem?

    Hi Doug,
    Thanks for the reply. No we haven't had any recent updates in that department...not that we recall anyhow...sorry we aren't that techie. Our new Mac just seems to do everything on its own! I should mention that for each slideshow there are about 2-4 songs each. Out of the total (about 15 songs) there is the odd one that will start playing in the middle of the show..so about 3 songs that do play..odd. I didn't realize that quicktime has anything to do with the iphoto? As I've never seen it pop up or anything?? Any more advice or help would be appreciated!
    Thanks, Jen

  • Can Keynote play PowerPoint slideshows with audio intact?

    I mean iOS Keynote on iPad and OS X Keynote on Mac OS X!  To play PowerPoint slideshows with built in audio and not just throw up slides.

    Keynote isn't at all good at dealing with audio, so whether it's worth trying largely depends on the content of your powerpoints and how many you need to transfer.
    If it were me, I think I'd look at using OpenOffice - it may make a better job of things for you.
