Terrifying 2 hours - SSD died and came to life again

That's what I've just had. In a bid to troubleshoot pulseaudio crashing issues, I decided to re-enable on-board sound and remove the X-Fi card (I've read plenty of stories regarding the ca0106 driver, and since it's not been updated since 2006 I figured it could be that). To re-enable on board (hda-audio) meant I had to rebuild my kernel first (I build a minimal kernel, and hda-audio wasn't necessary the way my system was configured). So kernel built and installed, rebooted and got the on-board sound working with pulse and 5:1 audio. All satisfactory so time to remove the X-Fi card.
At this point, things went pear shaped. Took the card out, powered up, and stuck at post detecting drives. More worryingly, it was the SSD that was causing the detection fault.
Disconnected all other drives (3 platters and DVD) and tried again. same problem. Removed the sata III card and plugged the drive into the on board SATA ports. Then I realised that the SATA III card hadn't presented it's own POST screen last startup, so figured maybe that had gone south, instead. Not as bad as the SSD if that's the case. But alas, no, no system disk found.
Now, I have a linux install on a platter as an emergency backup, so figured I'd boot that and see if I could see what was going on from a running system. No such luck, kernel started to boot and then halted, reporting ata COMRESET failed (errno=-16), and there it stayed. I made a cuppa and left it to see what would happen. Eventually, it got past the error and systemd dumped me into an emergency console. This wasn't wholly unexpected since I'd removed other drives with partitions that are mounted at boot.
A quick edit of fstab to avoid mounting the missing drives, and rebooted. Lo and behold, the system booted without errors. I tentatively started re-introducing drives whilst successfully booting again from the SSD. All went well, so I re-introduced the SATA III card. Still booted, so finally reconnected the SSD to the SATA III card and my system is back to normal.
Now, I'm not a great believer in computers spontaneously fixing themselves, so does anyone have any idea what the ata error reported by the kernel when boot was failing is, what may have caused it, and what would have caused it to right itself? Is it simply a case that getting a kernel to boot (any kernel) with the SSD connected may have sent a signal to the SSD to reset whatever was going wrong, or is there something more malicious at play?

I have had the same experience with a brand new mobo and SSD. It happened ~20 consecutive times and since then, it has booted up every day.
I'm thinking of upgrading the motherboard's BIOS (it is EFI, but I guess there is still some kind of firmware involved) and that the problems have been caused by not powering up the SSD in time before it is being detected by the mobo controller.

hi just done some up dates on my i phone three it got half way through sync with my phone then the phone turned of and came back on again with the i tune picture and the end of the usb cable. but my phone is plugged into my computer can anyone help

Try to force your phone into recovery mode. Disconnect it from the computer's USB cord. Turn it off if you can by holding the sleep/wake switch until you see the red slide to off. If you can't turn it off, please continue. Press and hold the home button while plugging it into the computer's USB cord. Continue holding the Home button while iPhone starts up. While starting up, you will see the Apple logo. When you see "Connect to iTunes" on the screen, you can release the Home button and iTunes will display the recovery mode message.  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1808
Then you can restore your phone:  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1414

  • IPad died and won't open again. Please help

I was using facetime when my iPad died and it won't open again. I charged it and after 15 mins. I tried holding down the home and sleep/wake button for a long time but it didn't work. Shall I bring it to the service center?

Thanks very much for the advice.
I'm glad to say that you were right.
Interestingly, I could not SEE the Preview plist file in there when I looked, but when I did a 'find', there it was. Strange eh?
Once deleted, the problem was solved.
    Thanks again

  • HT201407 iPhone 3GS randomly dying and camera freezes on shutter screen

I have an unlocked iPhone 3GS. When I got it, it worked fine but anoint a month after, the battery started dying randomly. At first or wasn't that big of a problem because it would die at 10-20% but now it's dying at 90-95%. Any way to fix?! And also my camera has started freezing on the shutter screen and will not work. Any way to fix that also?!

Basic troubleshooting from the User's Guide is reset, restart, restore (first from backup then as new).  Try each of these in order until the issue is resolved.

  • My Powerbook died, and came back alive?

Couldn't think of a better title, haha.
I bought my 12 inch Powerbook back in 2005. Never had a problem until December of 2008. My hard drive failed (as evident with the clicking noise), and I was upgraded to a 160 GB hard drive (compared to the old 60 GB one) by an Apple authorized repair store.
Last month, I turned off the Powerbook, and when I went to turn it back on, it wouldn't. It was have the "start-up" sound, attempt to run, and then abrupt stop. It happened maybe once or twice before, and I thought maybe the computer overheated and I should cool it for a couple hours. Well, this time, it didn't turn on for days. Luckily, I got a temporarily laptop to tide me by, but now, I need your help. Out of randomness, I decided to turn on the Powerbook, and it magically turned back on. Nothing was missing -- it seemed that the Powerbook needed to be in a coma.
Should I get a new laptop since I am planning to already (preferably wait until next year when they offer the free iPod), or should I try to get this one repaired? I hate to think that just last year I bought a brand new hard drive. Does anyone know what is going on with my computer? I thought it might be the fan, since I know this laptop overheats frequently and I don't know if it's just bad habits (leaving it asleep rather than turning it off then back on). Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Boot from the Apple Hardware Test disk that came with your computer. (If your computer came with Tiger loaded it will be on the DVD otherwise it will be on a separate CD). Run the extended test in a loop (hold down Control + L during tests) and let it run for a while. It sometimes takes hours for intermittent issues to surface. Please post back with your findings.

  • My macbook air said start up disk almost full then died and wont start up again

i got a message saying start up disk was almost full so i deleted a load of stuff.  i thought this would solve it but the next time i turned it on all i got was the apple logo and a wheel going round and round.  Apple have now told me that when the disk gets full it doesnt read the start up data correctly and thats why it wont switch on.  I have lost everything on the machine and am going to have it rebuilt.  Has anyone else had this problem following the java script update that added a huge number of files to the hard drive

I purchased my shuffle two weeks ago. charged it, sync'd it, used it, recharged it... about two weeks past and then the shuffle went completely dead. dead. nothing to explain its dead.
Sorry to hear that. Did it by any chance get moisture on it?
i have plugged into 3 different computers including my mac.
What did/does Apple System Profiler say about it in teh USB tree when plugged in?
I just called Apple. They are sending me a new one. He said its a "software issue" when I read him my serial #. wow.
THAT's interesting. Would you share with us the serial number so that others might be able to address this issue with Apple support? I'm a bit skeptical about it being an unaddressed "software" issue, especially since it would seem cheaper to be fixed with a firmware update than incurring the costs of replacing affected shuffles...
coincidentally I went to walmart this morning and asked him if they knew of any issues. he said, the shuffle is nothing but problems but the nano is very solid. thats a total bummer as I really like the shuffle for my purposes (elite triathlete) and training.

  • IPhone 4s 32GB dying at 20% battery life and getting worst

I have currently been through 4 iPhone 4s's and all 4 have had the same problem. they have all been find for about 2 weeks and then they all started staying at 100% for anywhere from 2 hours to up 8 hours before going down. Then they would start dying at like 13-14% battery life, as each day pasts it gets worst and my phone starts dying sooner and sooner. One of my phone got as bad as dying at 38% battery life. They all do the same thing, they hit a certain point then it goes from whatever % it is at to 1% then just shuts off. I have tried just about everything I can think of or read about to fix this issue. Also, I am getting sick of driving all the way to the Apple store for them to just give me a new with the same problem. If anyone has this problem or knows anyway to fix it or maybe knows what the problem is please let me know.

o ok I understand you now. Yes I have always set it up as a new device, the first time I had this problem I believe they restored the new phone from my backup (same issues). The last two times I was there we set the phones as new devices, yet I have the same problem. They have literally tired everything to my knowledge, they have even sent my old phone to the IT people or whatever they are called to see if they can figure out why the phone is having this issue. Could it be a bad battery? I don't do anything crazy with the phones, this time around I haven't even plugged it into the computer or my car charger just incase those plugs were doing something to the battery. I love the new iPhones, however my luck can't be this bad...

Make an appointment at an Apple Store to have your device examined by a technician. Or contact Apple Support. Get your lock button fixed then you can restore your phone.

It has always been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your computer..  Copy them from your backup copy of your comptuer.

  • Z10 Battery died and now it wont turn back on after charging for 3 -5 hours

My phone completely died and i didnt charge it for about a day. I went to charge it the following day and it wont hold a charge. I plug the charger in and the red light on the top right of the phone turns on and then blackberry appears on the screen shortly after and then it just turns off.
I plugged it into my computer and it wont even recognize my device.
I also had it plugged in for a few hours and then pulled the battery out and for a few seconds and reinserted it and nothing.
    Any help would be appreciated.
