Test Drive Mac OS X

I have been thinking of getting a Black Macbook for school and it will be the first time I have every used a Mac (used one in elementary school but that was a while ago). I was hoping there would be a way for me to test drive the Mac software so I can become a little more accustomed to it, I have played around with the actual Macbook whenever I can at Future Shop. Unfortunately I can't sit around for a few hours just to indulge my curiosity. So I was wondering if anyone knew of a way I could try out Mac OS X. I would think some sort of virtualized solution would work best, but that is against the Mac EULA (I think). Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Apple does not offer trial copies of OS X. Borrowing someone's Mac or continued "playing" with it is your only option.

  • New Mac Mini + Office 2004 Test Drive

Hi everyone. Not sure if this is the correct place to post this question, but I'll give it a shot...
I bought a new Mac Mini a few weeks ago. I just downloaded a Word document from my e-mail and it opened up Office 2004 Test Drive automatically... I agreed to the User Agreement, opened up my Word document, yada yada...
Now, however, it bugs me that this is trial software and I have 30 days to evaluate it. Thing is I actually own Office 2004 and just never got around to installing it on my Mac Mini yet...
So what is the proper way to install it? Do I need to remove Office Test Drive 2004 first, or do I just run the installer off the Office 2004 DVD? What are the proper steps I need to take?
    Thank you,
    Keith

    Remove MS Office Test Drive
On your hard disk, open Microsoft Office 2004 folder that contains the Test Drive. Any documents you saved in the Microsoft Office 2004 Test Drive should be moved somewhere in your documents folder.
In the Microsoft Office 2004 folder, double-click "Remove Office". In the Results window, choose Microsoft Office 2004 (including Test Drive) and then click "continue" and follow the prompts.

  • Installed MS Office for Mac, after uninstalling test drive, still reg to TD

I installed MS Office for Mac 2004 this morning, after being very careful to uninstall the test drive version, after reading about problems it causes not to do so. I followed the instructions to uninstall, emptied the trash after, did the installation, updates, etc. But when I look at the "about" section of word, etc, it shows that the product is licensed to "Office 2004 Test Drive User". I did fill in the info on name, address, etc, and the "test version" watermarks that I was seeing on excel spreadsheets pre-installation are gone now. I have rebooted the machine. Do I need to register each application separately? Did I miss something in the uninstall?
Also, after installing the new Office, I had problems accessing the internet from accounts other than the one from which I'd done the installation. I asked about that in the internet related subforum here, thought I had it fixed, but it's been inconsistent, seems to work on-and-off in the different accounts. Did the accessing of the net during the course of the install knock something out of place?

I installed office after deleting test drive. Registration is fine. Microsoft creates a user pref folder for each user account. This will be activated with your individual pref. the first time you open one of the office programs. It will be different/reset for each user on the computer. So it is possible that different users would experience different problems connecting to the internet. I copied my users pref and library folder over from my powerbook to the imac and all of my settings seem to work just fine on the new imac.
My suggestion would be to uninstall all versions of office on your imac and then reinstall office 2004. Be sure to do this in an administrator account and to repair permissions before and after install.
    Good luck!

  • Mac Office Test Drive Software

Can anyone tell me how to get my computer to recognize my installed and registered version of mac office instead of the test drive software that came installed on the computer.
I am assuming there is someplace to set this option - as of right now, any document I open has the test drive text and the reminders each time of expiration of the trial software. I am beginning to go insane.....

  • Test Drive a Mac

Hello, didn't really know where to put this topic so sorry for poor choice.
I noticed a while ago that there was a test drive a mac scheme (in the UK Apple site) can someone tell me if this is still on and send me a link?
Also if you know about it tell me about it. Like how long you get it for etc.
    Thank you very much!

Here is a link to the Apple UK site where they use the phrase "test drive a mac today." It doesn't seem to be an official program, just a bit of ad copy.

Hi i've just gotten a macbook and have some problems with running microsoft office.
I have the previous 2004 version (11.0) but for some reason, it won't use that as default, and i can't remove the new version (test drive) w/o removing the old one at the same time.
I don't want to have to pay for the new one if i can avoid it. Can somebody tell me what can I do?

  • Office Test Drive is a pain

    Bought new MacBook - great!
FireWire all my work and applications from iMac - great!
Start using Office (purchased 2yrs ago) and Test Drive wants me to buy again - not so great!
Removed Test Drive using "Remove" application residing in Test Drive folder and change all my files in "Get info" to open using my original version of Office but get error 10660. Now all my existing and new files will not open and come up with error 10660. The only way to open them is to change "open with" in "Get info" on every single file
(this is 100s) even although I changed "open with" to "chnage all". When I go to the "open with" menu I can still see the old version of Test Drive as default even although I used the remove application - pain in the **
This is another case of Microsoft trying to take over the world. Why has Apple allowed this?
Any suggestions would be very welcome.
    thx
    MacBook Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I didn't install Office just used the FireWire cable to transfer. Surely this is the whole idea that you don't need to install your exisiting software again! It was a couple of days before I realised that Test Drive had taken control of my computer.
Thanks for your comments anyway but I still think Apple should re-think pre-loading Test Drive. It has and will cost me time to put it right. Who do you think I should send the bill to?
    Ok I've stopped moaning now!
    Thanks again

  • Office Test Drive: relaunching the initial Entourage setup?

I have been playing about with the Office Test Drive--does anyone know how to run the initial setup that Entourage performs on its first launch, again? I was testing the import of an old database; now that I see it works well I want to trash that database and rerun the initial setup again, but there is no option to do so that I can find.
    1. "Import" does not work as it won't allow me to select from the Office Identities or Main Identity or Database folder/files. (I want to do this from a backup of the database and not from a program itself. This worked on the initial setup but does not seem to want to work in the "Import" command.)
    2. I cannot seem to trash the old identity; when I drag it to the trash it goes into the trash but the trash will not allow me to empty it as it says the Database is in use.
    3. Holding down the option key upon launching Entourage worked once--it went to launch Database Utility but quit unexpectedly, and when I launched Entourage it was wiped clean and gave me the "new import" option, but I wasn't prepared to install the new database at that moment and now launching Entourage again does not give me that option. Also, when I have tried that trick again--holding down the option key during the lauch of Entourage--Database Utility launches correctly now! It does not "wipe clean" the program this time.
Should I delete the Office Test Drive and reinstall a new copy? I found it on Mactopia; I'm just worried that the computer will detect that I'm reinstalling Test Drive and refuse to allow it. (I still have 30 days left of the Test Drive as it stands now.)
    Any other suggestions?

It doesn't make sense to me that you would have a
problem like this. I have bought 2 iMacs this year.
One of them was about 7 weeks old when I got it and
my installation of the test drive worked just fine.
Bought a 3 month old e Mac last year and used the
test drive for 30 days while awaiting delivery of my
    full version of Office.
It has nothing to do with the date the software was
installed but from the date it was first opened.
Wierd problem. Did you buy this Mac new?
yes brand new, from the apple store online at apple.com,, I talked to some guy on the apple help chat thing and he said my machine was manufactured on 10/22/05 I ordered it 11/28/05. Anyway I did trash it lastnight and am going to try and reinstall it it. The tech suggested it then he said he didnt think it would work lol. I also downloaded the program suggested and it works well also.. so either way Im covered now.

  • Office test drive expires b4 30 days...

i juz purchased macbookpro in early april. it comes with the office 2004 test drive, and i'm supposed to be able to use it for 30 days. but as i've changed the clock once by accident, it expires right away!! no matter how many times i reset the clock in system preferences, it juz doesn't help...
and, i find out that i can't even transfer the excel file back to my PC to edit...seems that the file is somehow "locked" when the office expires. when i transfer the excel to my PC, it changes to 1k, and simply can't be opened.
is there anyway i can set back the expiry date to a correct one?!? it's kindda urgent... i juz need more time b4 i can purchase an official copy...million thanx!!

    hi barry~
    thx for replying!
i think it's not solely a problem with Microsoft..
as the same thing happens for adobe photoshop.. =(
i downloaded the tryout version yesterday, and it expires today...
i think it's bcoz of the system clock..

  • Microsoft office test drive - Expired??

Hi there. I bought an emac about 2 months ago, and it had 'microsoft office 2004 for mac test drive' which is supposed to be a 30 day free test drive. But as soon as i tried to open it it said it had expired!
I rang up the store and the lady said to drag it to the trash, then re-install it by using my grey 'Mac OS X install Disc'
But when i use the disk and go to 'Optional Installs' i get to the 'custom install' page and there is no 'microsoft office test drive' to tick. under applications it only has iLife, iTunes and about 6 others.
Anyone out there who could help me?

You can download MS Office 2004 for Mac Test Drive from the MS website, also. Here is the link:

  • Microsoft Office 2004 Test Drive Question

    Hello all,
Please forgive me if this is the wrong forum, but I'm looking for help here... or possibly somebody has a forum elsewhere where I might ask this question:
I have recently purchased a brand new Macbook Pro.
    I installed Office 2004 (Student/Teacher Edition).
When I double-click on a document created by Word (from my PC that I transferred over), instead of my "real" Word 2004 opening the document... I get the Office 2004 Test Drive opening it...and a warning saying "I have 29 days remaining until it expires".
My question is: How can I either remove the Office 2004 Test Drive and/or get it so that my document is opened with the "real" Office, instead of the test drive?
As I said, I apologize if this is the wrong forum... but if you can please a) direct me to the correct forum or b) help me out with a link... I'd VERY much appreciate it.
    Thanks very much!
Macbook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

If you installed (used) the Trial version of Office then merely dragging the folder to the Trash won't do the trick. You will instead have to run the Office Uninstaller (in the /Office 2004/Additional Tools/Remove Office/ folder) and completely remove both the Trial and the licensed version of Office including preferences. Then reinstall your licensed version. This is the only sure way of avoiding any conflicts between the two versions.

  • Microsoft office test drive

Microsoft Office Test Drive came with my new iMac. I already have Microsoft Office and it was copied over when my files were transfered to my new computer. I would automatically be taken to Test Drive whenever I opened a document I had already created. This became a problem when the Test Drive period was over and it asked me to purchase a registered copy.
My only option was to open my already registered copy of word, excel, etc. and open the file I wanted. This is workable solution, but not I am not enthused.
I have removed Test Drive and now when I try to open a document U get an error message saying "The operation cannot be completed. An unexpected error occured (error code -10660)."
So the computer is obviously trying to locate the Test Drive version that is no longer there. How can I make my registered version the default? I tried searching the message board, but I only found people who were having problems uninstalling Test Drive.

The Office Test Drive version should be removed from the hard drive before installing the full version. The following was copied from Microsoft's Mactopia website:
    http://www.microsoft.com/mac/default.aspx?pid=office2004td
Note: You should remove the Test Drive version of Office 2004 before installing the complete version.
I'm afraid you need to remove Office 2004 and re-install it.

  • Can't get rid of WORD TEST DRIVE

Brand new iMac, I installed Office first thing.
Did not know that there's a "test drive" version pre-loaded.
Did not discover this until I tried printing, the "test drive" doesn't support printers.
Subsequently discovered that none of my docs will open except in the "test drive" version.
Question: What happens when "test drive" expires in 21 days? Will my docs automatically start opening in the permanent version that I installed with Office? (I can open the docs by first opening the full version and doing "File-open" but that's ridiculous.)
I tried trashing the "test drive" but none of my docs would open until I untrashed it.
    Suggestions?
    Thanks

  • Can't get some LCDS ES Test Drive samples to work in Tomcat

I can't get many of the Sample Test Drive examples included
with Livecycle Data Services ES 2.5.1 to work properly with Tomcat
(both version 5.5.25 and 6.0.14). I've tried both on Windows XP SP2
and Mac OSX (10.4), but I get the same errors on both platforms. I
can however get the Sample Test Drive from LCDS to work fine with
the JRun server on Windows (included with the Windows version of
LCDS). I've setup the JRun server in a similar fashion as Tomcat
(see my steps below) and everything works fine. I haven't been as
successful with Tomcat. Can anyone point out where I'm going wrong
    with my Tomcat setup?
    I am using Java 1.5.0.
Here are the error messages I get when trying out the LCDS
    Test Drive examples on Tomcat:

    Samples 2, 6 and 7 work fine.
Here are the steps I took to setup Tomcat. I've tried this on
    both MacOSX and WinXP:
    1. Download and extract Tomcat from tomcat.apache.org (I've
tried both version 5.5.25 and 6.0.14)
    2. Install Livecycle Data Services ES 2.5.1 and copy
    flex.war, flex-admin.war and samples.war to [tomcat-root]/webapps/
    3. Prepare tomcat for Livecycle Data Services by following
    the instructions here:
    http://help.adobe.com/en_US/livecycle/es/lcds_installation.html
3a. Add Java Open Transaction Manager (JOTM) from
    http://jotm.objectweb.org/.
Copy the JAR files from [jotm-root]/lib to
    [tomcat-root]/common/lib/.
3b. Create a context file for your web application and
register JOTM using the Transaction element, e.g. for the samples
    WAR create a [tomcat-root]/conf/Catalina/localhost/samples.xml file
    and add the following lines:
    <Context docBase="${catalina.home}/webapps/samples"
    privileged="true"
    antiResourceLocking="false" antiJARLocking="false">
    <Transaction
    factory="org.objectweb.jotm.UserTransactionFactory"
    jotm.timeout="60"/>
    </Context>
3c. Increase the maximum memory to at least 512MB. For
Tomcat, this is achieved by specifying the maximum heap size for
the JVM in the JAVA_OPTS variable in [tomcat-root]/bin/catalina.sh:
    -Xmx512m
    4. Run the tomcat server ([tomcat-root]/bin/startup.sh for
Mac OS or [tomcat-root]\bin\startup.bat for WinXP) which extracts
the 3 .war files into their respective directories in
    [tomcat-root]/webapps/
    5. Goto the Samples Test Drive in your web browser at
    http://localhost:8080/samples/testdrive/

    Thanks Leif,
Yes, set it to the location jndi path.
A piece of info is that the 903 oc4j release notes states that global conn pooling doesn't
work. Infering that the j2ee/home/config/data-sources.xml data sources aren't pooled or ??
I just tested so called local connection pooling, where I edited the data-sources.xml that
gets packaged in the ear, to include the min/max params and re-ran my test.
Still, the AM creates a new conn, it's to a new socket, and closes the conn when done. Causing
each conn to not be pooled, rather opened then closed to the DB box. As verified with lsof and
netstat, checking the ephemeral port # on the DB box side, always changes, meaning it's a
new socket and not an old pooled conn socket.
    ???? What the heck??
Surely if the AM conn check out / return code works properly, OC4J's pooling JDBC driver would
pool and not close the socket??
Has anywone gotten JDBC Datasource connections in BC4J to actually be pooled under OC4J??
Since I couldn't get this to work in my early 902 oc4j testing, and now can't get it to work
    still under 903 OC4J, either it's my config or BC4J AM's code or OC4J?
Any thoughts on how to figure out what's not configed correctly or has a bug?
    Thanks, curt
