Test migration to linux using vmware

I was wondering if in doing a migration from netware to linux that it would be a good idea to do a test migration in a virtual environment (i.e. grab an image of my current netware server and build a virtural sles and do the migration as a test there first?
Anyone tried this?
Thanks!

Well, I've done plenty of test migrations with VMWare, certainly, but it
really depends on how big your GW system is, etc. whether it's really worth
it. I know it sounds like a "scary" proposal, but it's really not that
difficult of a procedure overall.

  • 11i Migration to Linux - Using transportable tablespace of 10g to move DB

    Hi there,
We are planning to move 11i from HP-UX to Linux. Our Oracle EBS 11i database version is 10g R2. Does anyone know if its possible to use the "Transportable" tablespace feature of 10g to move the entire database to Linux rather than using Export/Import?
Since 10g offers to move the tablespaces across the platforms using its transportable tablespace feature, I just wanted to poll this group to see if anyone has any experience on doing this for Oracle E-Business suite's database.
    Thanks,
    Ashish

Consider the limitations of Transportable Tablespaces, Objects with underlying objects (such as materialized views) or contained objects (such as partitioned tables) are not transportable unless all of the underlying or contained objects are in the tablespace set.
Most database entities, such as data in a tablespace or structural information associated with the tablespace, behave normally after being transported to a different database but there are some exceptions:

  • Testing migration 11.2 using 12 drivers

    hi -
We are planning to update our servers from 11.1 to 11.2.    We are thinking about using the Oracle 12 jdbc driver since it's backward compatible.  For our testing, we thought about testing our triggers, views, tables (all different column types).   Mainly structure.   But, the thought came up to do a full regression test on our applications.   Some people thought that some queries may not work, but others would so we would need to test every query.
Can anyone provide some experience/guidance on the version 12 drivers, or if you had issues when updating the driver from one version to another?
    thanks

Some viewpoints are if we upgrade to the 12 driver, we need a full regression test on every single query.   Others think performing a subset of queries is sufficient.   So, I am just looking for testing viewpoints/experience/opinions.
    And I thought I provided that viewpoint/experience/opinion.
THERE IS NO 12 DRIVER! As I just said above:
The JDBC jar file is independent of the Oracle database. The correct JDBC jar file to use depends on the version of Java that you need to support for the client applications that use that version of java.
You need to disassociate JDBC from the Oracle DB or Oracle 12.
The decision as to which jar version to use depends on the functionality that you need for your client application.
So, my original questions stands.   I'm looking for someone that can provide guidance that if I were to upgrade to the ojdbc6 jar/driver in Oracle 12 from using the odjbc6 jar/driver in Oracle 11.   That's all I am asking.   I think this thread has gone down the path of JDBC drivers instead of testing.
And my original answer stands. You have NO BASIS for upgrading your JDBC jar file. NONE! NADA! ZIPPO!
You should NOT upgrade your JDBC jar file unless you have some rational basis for doing so. You have NOT provided ANY rational basis for doing so. Worse, you keep referring to an 'Oracle 12 driver' and there IS NO SUCH THING!
Why, on Earth, would you want to change from something that you know works and provides the functionality you need?
What you have works. Staying with what you have requires NO 'full regression test on every single query', no 'performing a subset of queries', no nothing, nada, zippo!
    If that isn't a viewpoint/experience/opinion on testing I don't know what is.
NO TESTING IS NEEDED! Either stay with the driver you have or post information showing that your current driver is not meeting your requirements in some fashion.
I tried to explain that just because a jar file (e.g. one that ships with Oracle 12DB) has the name 'ojdbc6.jar' does NOT mean it has something better than what you are using. I tried to explain about the versions. For all you know the jar included with Oracle 12DB is OLDER than the one you are now using and actually has LESS functionality. Did you even check the actual versions as I alluded to?
Those 'some viewpoints' may be leading you to replace your current driver with one from the 12c release that is actually OLDER!
Even, on the remotest chance that you somehow needed a newer driver, or wanted to test and use a newer driver you should download the latest ojdbc7.jar file from the link I posted and test/use that one and NOT the ojdbc7.jar file that ships with 12c.
I'm done here. Either I'm not making myself clear or I'm telling you something you just don't want to hear. You can complain about the 'messenger' if it makes you feel better but that doesn't change the reality of the message.
    That message is:
NO TESTING IS NEEDED! Either stay with the driver you have or post information showing that your current driver is not meeting your requirements in some fashion.

  • Installing linux and unix on my macbook pro without using vmware

I was browsing through the forum and bumped into a topic where the best advice for installing linux application is the following:
    http://macdevcenter.com/lpt/a/7073
However, I have not tested this out therefore I am pretty reluctant to put this on my laptop which is currently running MAC OS X 10.5.8. (4gb ram). If anyone have done this please let me know.
    1) My question: Is this a reliable method to run linux applications on MAC OS natively using the x11 from Apple?
Note: I have vmware and I personally don't prefer booting a separate OS on my computer just to use one or two apps. However if that is the only solution I already have ubuntu running on my vmware. Also I wanted to completely wipe off my vmware and the ISO images (ubuntu and win xp) to free up the space in my hard drive. If I have to use ubuntu which may be a "safer solution" than run linux applications on my hard drive then I will stick to the vmware method.
If someone could give me some insight in this topic then I would greatly appreciated their help.
p.s. I want to install xilinx web-pack and other useful softwares that are only available in linux, ubuntu and win xp/vista/w7. My goal is to completely transform my laptop from dual booting ubuntu and win xp to just run mac snow leopard (in the near future).
    Thanks in advance,

Basically I want to run linux and unix applications without running vmware on my mac os x. I heard there is a way to use x11 and FinkCommander (http://finkcommander.sourceforge.net/) application. However, I am unable to figure out how to install programs such as xilinx ise (http://www.xilinx.com/ise/logicdesignprod/foundation.htm) on my MacBook Pro using FinkCommander. In addition, xilinx ise runs on linux and windows however not mac.
In simple words I want to solely use Leapord (not snow leapord) to run applications such xilinx ise (which is only available on windows platform or linux).
I recently shifted from windows xp platform to mac and I rarely use vmware after making the shift. Therefore, I am trying to find a solution where I don't require vmware at all, my plan is to remove vmware from my hard drive.
I just restated what I stated in the previous post in a simpler manner, sorry for any miscommunication on the earlier post. I am looking for a step by guide to install linux applications on my mac. I am at a process of learn linux at the moment so I am kind of slow when it comes to linux and mac. Especially when it comes to installing using command line not GUI.
I just want to know if there is a solution out there for running linux based applications to run on my mac.

    Hi everyone,
Has anyone installed Linux using boot camp ? I'm asking this because i want to install the latest version of oracle database 11g and i need to install Linux or Windows to run the server.
There is no version of Oracle 11g for macosx atm.
Why people choose VMware and Parallels instead of using boot camp?
    Please give some feedback.

Quite a lot of people are running Linux on their Intel-Macs (I am not one of them...).
    Here's a how-to for Ubuntu https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Intel_iMac

Why people choose VMware and Parallels instead of using boot camp?
VMWare and Parallels have the advantage over BootCamp, that you can use them while still being in OSX, so that you can run Windows/Linux alongside OSX.
With BootCamp you have to restart your Mac each time you want to switch to/from Windows/Linux.
    Please give some feedback.
    Hope it helps

  • Migrating database from windows to linux using dbca templates

    Hi every one,
Is it possible to migrate Oracle10g database from Windows to Linux by using DBCA templates?????????????
If yes please guide me, as i tried it and am getting error while creating database on linux using DBCA templates of Windows server.
    Warm regards,
    Veeresh.S
    (Oracle DBA)

With DBCA you can create a new database, delete a database, create ASM, and manage templates.
There's no option of migrating a database from one platform to the other. If you want to migrate your database from Windows to Linux you have 2 ways of doing it:
1 using IMP/EXP Export you db on windows and Import it on Linux.
2 Use across platform transportable tablespace if you db is already on 10g.

  • Migrate Oracle 11g database from Windows To Linux using RMAN hot / cold  backup ?

    Hi Friends,
Is it possible to Migrate Oracle 11g database from Windows To Linux using RMAN hot / cold  backup ? ( as i would like to perform Point In Time recovery)
(or) The only way is to use RMAN convert as mentioned here  - Transporting Data Across Platforms
(or) Is there any other method (except exp/imp and data pump)
    Regards,
    DB

    HI
his post describes the procedure required to migrate a database from Windows to Linux using the RMAN Convert Database command.
Both Windows and Linux platforms have the same endian format, which makes possible to transfer the whole database, making the migration process very straightforward and simple.
To migrate between platforms that have a different endian format, Cross Platform Transportable Tablespaces (XTTS) needs to be used instead.
List of Steps Needed to Complete the Migration
The migration process is simple, but as it has several steps it is convenient to be familiar with them before running it.
    1. Check platform compatibility between source and target OS
    2. Start the database in read only mode
    3. Check database readiness for transport from Windows to Linux using DBMS_TDB.CHECK_DB
    4. Check if there are any external objects
    5. Execute the Rman Convert database command
    6. Copy converted datafiles, generated Transport Script and Parameter File to Linux
    7. Edit the init.ora for the new database
    8. Edit the Transport Script and Parameter File changing the windows paths to Linux Paths
    9. Execute the Transport Script
    10.Change the Database ID
    11.Check database integrity
    Thank you

  • No migrated network IP / Removal VMware Tools

    Hello guys! good night!
I'm trying to convert about 100 VMWARE VMs to my Hyper-V 2012 R2 environment. I'm using the new MVMC 2.0.
After converting the VM, I realize that the network IP address was absent. The NIC was using the DHCP config. (The source VMWARE VM was configured with Static IP).
Other point is that the VMWARE tools wasn't removed.
In addition, during the migration process, the source VMWARE VM was power on and the MVMC did the snapshot and turned it off.
None of this itens has occured after the VM migration complete process. Even the VLAN ID in the VM settings on the Hyper-V was blank. No error message was returned. The whole migration process has completed successfully (green check mark).
    On the link http://blogs.technet.com/b/privatecloud/archive/2014/04/08/migration-automation-toolkit-for-mvmc-2-0.aspx
states that with this tool is possible to:
    MVMC removes VMware tools;
    MVMC migrates network IPs;
But none of this itens has occured after the VM migration complete process. Even the VLAN ID in the VM settings on the Hyper-V was blank.
Besides this issues, the whole migration process has completed successfully (green check mark).
I would like to confirm that steps should I take to do a troubleshooting (for example, where can I find the verbose logs, etc).

  • Migrating to Linux with Oraacle Application release 11i

    Hi There!
I would appreciate your expert advice on migration of Oracle EBS 11i from Solaris to Linux.
We are following Oracle Metalink Doc id 230627.1 & 331221.1 (db 10gR1)
To give a brief picture on the environment, we have 4 servers, PRODUCTION on 2 servers (2 nodes, 1 db, 1 application), TEST on 3rd server and 4th one will act as target for migrating production multi node to single node (Solaris to Linux).
We have planned to make a fresh clone from production to test, it will be multi node to single node clone, then from the cloned test will migrate to Linux on new server (4th server) which will be a single node configuration.
I would like to have advice on the last stage of this process, since the final goal is to migrate the production from Solaris to Linux and we are using cloned instance on TEST for testing the whole process, will it be appropriate to export just the production database to the 4th server using datapump (while importing TABLE_EXISTS_ACTION = TRUNCATE) once the TEST instance is successful migrated to the 4th server? Rather than repeating the whole process again from PRODCUTION to the 4th server.
My point here is since this whole process of migrating the TEST to the 4th server might take a weeks time, the difference between the newly migrated 4th instance and the PRODUCTION will be a weeks data (since the 4th server is migrated from TEST which in turn is a clone of PRODUCTION), so by using datapump we will try to import up to date data from the production to the 4th server, this will save time and efforts by not repeating the whole process from PRODUCTION to the 4th server again. Or is there any better way of achieving this?
    Regards.
    AK.

    What exactly is not supported?
i.) The parameter TABLE_EXISTS_ACTION = TRUNCATE while importing from a full export 'or' This option.
Please correct me if I have understood it wrong, do we still have to migrate the application, since the application is already migrated from TEST instance to the 4th server (the TEST instance happens to be a clone of the PRODUCTION). The only difference we have here is the data that to a week’s data ie the data generated on PRODUCTION instance since it was cloned to TEST. So will it be necessary to do the process all over again. For the application tier node, the simple answer is no (as long as no changes have been done at the application tier node, i.e. applied patches, created new custom forms/reports, ..etc).
If we are importing data into the migrated 4th server from PRODUCTION's full export file, how will DATAPUMP react when it come across already existing database with the same tables, because at this stage i will not be creating the database all over again, since it is already existing when we migrated the db and application from TEST to 4th server (according to the doc). One extra step i will perform in this approach, after importing the DB I will run post clone script on DB just to update tables with node information. The target instance should be clean when you migrate the database tier node, and this explains why the option of using the import parameter is not supported.
As you mentioned above, please log a SR and update this post when you hear back from the Oracle support.
    Thanks,
    Hussein

  • How to install Muti_node R12 using VMWARE

    Hi,
Any one have experience on R12 with Linux installing multi node using vmware ,Please let me know, i know single node installation on VMWARE WORK STATION,
    Thanks

I got this multi node installation procedure from blog,
    http://skrajend.blogspot.com/2007_06_01_archive.html
    R12 MultiNode Installation with VMWare
Have only one node , don't worry still you can have enjoy R12 MultiNode Installation with VMWare.
I will share my experience here with all on how to setup R12 in a single node first and then add another Middle Tier.
Setup Requirement : Node with atleast 1 GB of Ram and 80GB of HardDisk , OS Dump , R12 Dump and VMWare Software
Download a Copy of VMWare WorkStation from http://www.vmware.com/download/ws/ for Linux
You will need an evaluation key
http://www.vmware.com/vmwarestore/newstore/wkst_eval_login.jsp , make sure you have the key before you start the Installation.
I downloaded an Image of Redhat Linux RHEL4-U4-i386-ES
    Linux Node Setup Information:
    1. Install OS Image on to the Box
    2. Name the host , say r12lab01.r12.com and assign a static IP
    3. Make sure you have all the latest RPM's in place. For more info refer R12 OS Pre-requisite Notes.
    4. Open a VNC Server as Root
    5. Download the VMWare RPM Package "VMware-workstation-5.5.3-34685.i386.rpm"
    6. Install the RPM Package
    7. Configure VMWare using "http://www.vmware.com/support/ws5/doc/ws_install_linux.html"
    8. Start VMware Workstation ( /usr/bin/vmware )
    9. Enter your serial number.
    10. Create a virtual machine using the New Virtual Machine Wizard.
    ( ref : http://www.vmware.com/support/ws5/doc/newguest_ws.html )
    11. Install a guest operating system in the new virtual machine.
You need the installation media CD-ROM for your guest operating system
    12. Name the New Virtual Host as r12lab02.r12.com and assign a static IP
    13. Make sure that you can communicate between first and the second node.
I am struck up here, can you explain me how to do this,
    14. Power Off the Node and Start Fresh , make sure you have no OS Issues.
    15. Keep the VNC Session Active. ( If you loose it , your will not have the new node )
    R12 Setup Information:
    1. Download Dump of R12 from http://edelivery.oracle.com
    2. Stage them on the Hard Disk( I did not include the space requirement of the Dump above)
    3. Run a Single Node Installation
    4. Make sure that the Installation Completed Normal and all the Service are Up and Running.
    5. Perform a Complete Health Check.
Adding a Node to the Existing Setup:
    1. Power on the Second Node
    2. Mount the R12 Mount Points on the Second Node.
i tried in VMware environment, but i am not able to mount the mount points,
    3. cd /home1/aptest/test/apps/apps_st/comn/clone/bin/
    4. perl adclonectx.pl addnode contextfile=TEST_r12lab01.xml
Target hostname (virtual or normal) [r12lab02]:
    5. Make sure that the above process generate the Secondary Node's Context File
    6. Make the Service Enabled that you want to run on the Second Node.
Initially have web service configured and later modify according to your need.
    7. Move into AD_TOP/bin and run adconfig.sh , context_file=TEST_r12lab01.xml
    8. Make sure that Autoconfig Complete's Normal.
    9. Source the Environment File
    10. Start the Service on the Seconday Node
    11. Navigate to OAM and verify that you have the Second Node.

  • How to install Oracle Enterprised Linux on VMware PLayer 4

    Hi Everyone,
My name is John and I've a small issue which I would like to share with you and hopefully, you are able to assist.
My laptop is installed with a Window 7 Home Edition operating system and I've installed VMware-player-4.0.2. After reboot, I've also downloaded the file - V29609-01 which is the ISO file of Oracle Enterprise Linux 6.2.
After that, I've tried to create a Virtual Machine - Oracle Enterprise Linux using the VMware Player by specifying the path and file name of the V29609-01.iso file on my local c:\ drive. I've tried it several times, but every time it just returns the message - 'pxe-e53 no boot filename received' and it just hangs there without proceeding further. Please let me know what I've done wrong and the correct steps and procedures to solve this problem as this is my first time installing a Linux operating system. Thank you for your assistance.
    Regards,
    John

    Hi,
Can you clarify and explain what is your exact meaning of 'Are you sure you've added the ISO to the VM to boot from?'? Because the following is what I did:
1.) Click the Create A New Virtual Machine.
2.) Select the 'Install disc image file (iso):' option and enter the full path of the V29609-01.iso (Oracle Enterprise Linux 6.2) file that I've downloaded from https://edelivery.oracle.com/. But underneath it, that is a message saying - 'Could not detect which operating systems is in this dsic image. You will need to specify which operating system will be installed.'
    3.) Click 'Next'.
4.) I chose "Linux' under the Guest operating system and chose 'Oracle Enterprise Linux' under the Version drop down.
    5.) Click 'Next'.
6.) I left the Virtual machine name as 'Oracle Enterprise Linux' and click 'Next'.
7.) I set the Maximum disk size to 300 GB and have the 'Split virtual disk into multiple files' option selected and click 'Next'.
8.) I have the 'Power on this virtual machine after creation' checked and click 'Finish'.
9.) A black screen displayed inside the VMware Player saying:
    'CLIENT MAC ADDR: 00 0C 289 ......
    PXE-E53: No Boot filename received
    PXE-M0F: Exiting Intel PXE ROM.
    Operating System not found
10.) And the process just hangs there.
    Regards,
    John

    Hello my friend
This is 3-tier heterogeneous you're installing. When installing addition application servers, it'll load kernel from CI which is a different OS. So you need to copy the right kernel in to directory /usr/sap/<SID>/SYS/exe/uc/<platform> on CI before start installing DI. Please refer to note 1112809 for details.
