Test tone 440 impossible?

Can anyone get Test Oscillator to produce a 440Hz tone? Try to adjust: it seems to snap to 439,90 or 440,20. Type it in and it snaps somewhere else as well.
Any smart tricks available? Though I admit, this is the real nitty-gritty of a professional audio application, concert pitch...
Thanks

In order to produce single cycle loop of a waveform within a sampler/rompler (a common technique for static synth waveforms which take up little memory), the frequency of the pitch in question has to divide evenly into the playback rate (44.1, 48, or whatever). Very few musical pitches actually divide evenly in this way.
So to circumvent this problem with single cycle looped waveforms, many samplers/romplers have a loop pitch offset parameter that can be adjusted to get the loop in tune. It's a combination of the playback engine's resolution, the root pitch itself, and the skill of the programmer which detemine whether the pitch of the single cycle loop is successfully brought into tune.
One way to avoid this pitfall is not to use single cycle loops. Instead, you attempt to loop multiple cycles of the waveform, the theory being that as you increase the loop length you'll reach a point (hopefully) where X number of cycles of the waveform (X times the frequency of the note) will divide evenly into the sample playback rate and allow for a perfectly in tune loop. While in some cases this can be achieved, there's no guarantee that your extended loop length, while now in tune, will fall on a zero crossing point of the waveform. This will produce clicks or pops. That's where crossfade looping techniques come in...
If anyone's interested in more of this gobble-t-gook I'd be happy to elaborate more.

Dell confirms it's an OS issue after troubleshooting with me for a couple of hours (wow)
Is there a way to look at this EVM file _without_ installing the Windows Driver Kit??

    Hi,
Thanks for posting in Microsoft TechNet Windows Vista Forum.
Upon your description, I see that you have done a lot of research and tests. Unfortunately, none of these troubleshooting works.
Based on my experience, this issue related to "failed to play test tone" can be related to several reasons. It also includes hardware defect. I am confusing why Dell confirms that the issue is related to Operating System. Could you let me know what operation Dell had troubleshot with you?
Meanwhile, here I just provide more troubleshooting except what you performed. If it doesn't work, I may also need to recommend that you contact Dell for support.
    1. Microsoft has released a Hotfix to troubleshoot related to "Failed to play test tone".
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/930883
    2. Make sure that these services are started.
    Windows Audio
    Multimedia Class Scheduler
    Remote Procedure Call
    Windows Audio Endpoint Builder
    3. I noticed that this issue occurred not long ago, I may need to suggest that you perform a System Restore to the previous restore point when the computer without any problem.
    System Restore
    ==============
    1)     Please click on Start and choose All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, and then Windows Backup.
    2)     Click Restore on the left pane.
    3)     Choose Basic Restore.
    4)     Follow the wizard and click Next.
    5)     If you would like to restore everything in the backup, we can check the box “Restore everything in this backup” on the top of the window.
    6)     We can also browse and choose certain files and folders to restore. Then, click Next.
    7)     Then choose the folder to save the recovered files and click Next.
    8)     When we see a “Restore is complete!” message, click Finish.
Meanwhile, as I know, I'm afraid that there is no other way to look at EVM file except Windows Driver Kit. Maybe there are some third-party software that out of my mind can look at EVM files, you may need to perform more research on Internet.

  • No HDMI Audio, Failed to Play Test Tone, Can't Change Default Playback Device

Hello, I'm experiencing some real trouble with my HP Pavilion dv6-2160us (with the i3-330M, no dedicated graphics) Windows 7-64 bit, SP1 PC, and I would greatly appreciate some assistance.
I've created a new thread because, despite the fact that many other people have experienced a problem similar to this and have posted what worked for them, nothing has worked for me.
    The Problem(s):
My main problem is that I cannot get any audio to play from my PC to my HDMI HDTV.
When I plug my HDMI cable into my PC and TV, the TV is recognized in Playback Devices, but nothing can play to it.
When I try to test the TV in playback devices, I get a "Failed to play test tone" error.
Additionally, I'd like to mention some other odd behavior that I think may be a part of the main problem.
In Playback Devices, I cannot change anything. I can't disable or enable a device, I can't set default playback or communication devices, and I can't save changes inside device properties. Every time I try to change something, like the default playback device, nothing happens or the changes are immediately reversed.
    The Question:
How can I get audio to play over HDMI on my PC (It's not a problem with the TV, my other HP machines play audio over HDMI to it just fine.)?
    What I've Tried:
    I have tried:
Changing the default playback devices, which I'm unable to do
Running the Windows 7 Audio Playback troubleshooters from within a clean boot state
Uninstalling and reinstalling the Intel(R) Display Audio driver
Uninstalling and reinstalling the IDT High Definition Audio CODEC
Uninstalling the IDT PC Audio program from Programs and Features
Disabling the IDT High Definition Audio CODEC
    Nothing has worked.
The drivers I have are the latest issued by HP
How can I get this working? I would really appreciate some assistance.
I'm at the point where I'm ready to try pretty technically-involved suggestions, so, please feel free to post those.
    Your expertise is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.

  • Failed to play test tone

When ever I try to play any sound, nothing happens.  When I go into the control panel and double click on the “sound” icon, it shows my speakers.  And when click on my sound device or speakers, and hit test, the message I get it "failed to play test tone".
    Now for some background.
    1. I had a different soundcard that was doing the same thing, but I thought maybe it just "went bad", so I bought a new one.  I’ve installed it with no problem.
    2. Yes, all the drivers are up to date.  I've run Windows update numerous times and I've double checked the driver version against the one on the manufactures website - they are the same.  Everything is up to date.
    3. The device manager can see my speakers/sound card and it says its working.
    4. I started out on another forum "Media foundation development - Re:Vista/No Sound/Failed to play test tone" and read the whole thread, did everything it told me to, and I even e-mail Microsoft to get a hotfix.  I installed the hotfix, to no avail.  Nothing has changed, my sound still does not work.
    5. The posters/answers at the above thread said they weren't really audio experts and were directing everyone to this thread.

  • Pug-In that counts Frequency or test tone analyzer?

I have a series of analog transfers that have tones. anybody know of a (preferably free) audio unit plugin that acts as a frequency counter?
e.g. if 1k tones on this tape are actually coming in at 1024 hz, i need to know in order to account for any minor speed or pitch errors that occurred during transfer of the 24 trk tapes. thanks!

    Hi,
In some cases they might be generated from something
like a Loftech, which, in the older days, always
    drifted a bit.
I still own my Loftech, and it also can read frequencies...that's a thought...And yes,the Loftech needs some time to warm up,before stabilizing..the age of the components makes that a necessity.I givr it about 5 minutes or so before printing to tape...and check often. The most drift I've gotten is about 2Hz centered around the 1kHz@ +4dB.
Over the years I've heard 1K test tones that probably
varied from 900Hz to 1500 Hz (I have "perfect pitch",
so I hear this stuff immediately).
Me too...I actually would call the engineer on it,and have him read the tone from the origianll generator,to make sure what was on tape was whatever was written on the 2" tape box.Mostly they would act surprised that it was "not" 1kHz...
The only tape machine I have trusted with tone reproduction so far is the ATR 102s.
So unless you know for sure that the source of the
tones was one of the precision sources I mentioned
above, using a frequency counter to determine tape
speed is actually not a good idea.
I agree, unless you KNOW the source generator's exact frequency(by calling the other engineer) you will NOT get the right amount of varispeed to compensate.
So do yourself a favor and call the other engineer and have him verify what frequency was sent into the tape,so you can then verify the ORIGINAL tape speed, and compensate for that instead of "guesstimating" it.A 5 minute call will save you countless hours of fiddling unnecessarily.
    Cheers

  • "Failed to play test tone&qu

Ever since I installed the new drivers I get this error " Failed to play test tone"? Has anybody experienced this problem. Please help me get my older drivers installed. Everytime I try to uninstall the beta drivers and restart, DEVMgr instantly reinstalls the drivers. THANKS

I don't know how to solve the test tone error, but to prevent device manager from installing the same drivers again, do this:
After uninstalling all Creative products via the Control Panel -
    go into Device Manager
Find your Sound Blaster entry - right click -> uninstall -> check box to delete driver software -> OK -> restart computer.
Those drivers should now be gone from your computer; your OS my install default generic audio drivers, but the Creative ones should be gone.

  • Test tone generator?

    Hi,
Im doing some hardware amplifier repair work and I need a signal/function/test tone generator but I cant seem to find a decent working up-to-date one that runs under linux. Ive tried baudline_jack but it just segfaults when I hit record with the tone generator enabled. Ive tried siggen but it looks for /dev/audio or /dev/dsp (which I dont have) and it segfaults. Ive tried all of the arachnoid.com ones and the java script one does work but it is limited for my purposes in that it doesnt generate sweeps. Ive even tried looking for LADSPA and LV2 plugins but I couldnt really find anything. Basically im looking for something as close to this "Test Tone Generator" as possible.
    Any Ideas?
    Edit:
I can get by with using the arachnoid generators modulator instead of a dedicated sweep but I would still like to find a good replacement. THX

You don't have /dev/audio because ALSA's oss emulation modules aren't loaded by default.  /dev/audio and /dev/dsp were created when I tried this:
    # modprobe snd_pcm_oss
I don't know if this will get siggen working for you, I haven't tried it.

  • Strange wandering master level when injecting test tone.

I have just rigged up my macbook with a MOTU 828MKII and a focusrite octopre 8ch MIC amp via ADAT optical.
I can record glitch free per channel and wanted to test stability when recording on all 18 availble channels for 1hr.
So I took a Lindos audio test kit. set it to -10dBu, fed it through a couple of sbs DA's and sent it to every physical input on my setup. I then set each of the mic gains to level out at -10db.
Each channel looks and records fine individually but the 'Main Out 1' gain will creep up to distortion then pull back down again on its own accord. It looks kind of like there is a feedback loop and logic is responding automaticly to prevent it by muting.
Does anybody know if logic does react like this?
I can not see any way that I could be creating a feedback loop here. I have started from a blank project and added the 18 channels myself. there is no complicated bussing. They all lead to Main Out 1. I can see no reason why Main Out 1 should do anything other than stay still.
I also have all inputs and outputs on the MOTU hardware mixer 0'ed so there can be no interference from this.
Anybody encountered anything like this and know how to make it go away? I really need to have a reliable setup for a recording I am doing tomorrow and currently I dont trust it at all!
still, at least it doesn seem to be glitching.
    ta,
    Rob.

    Hi Andrey,
    thanks for you reply.
Because this is our productive system I wouldn't like to append 0CALMONTH charateristci to the cube and the aggregation level.
I have SAP_ALL authorization in both (basic BI, and Portal) system, so I don't think this is the problem.
In the query designer there isn't any problem with the master datas of 0FISCPER or 0FISCVARNT charateristics.
I see 'K4' value in 0FISCVARNT, and I see a lot of master data in 0FISCPER.
I think there is a difference between our basic BI system and our Portal system, is it possible?

  • Where to place the test tone.

Is there a preferred channel/track for the sync pop/tone?
I've been working on a small scene that I now have to deliver back as aif slpits/stems, but I think I moved it from it's original place. It used to be on the a dialog track, but I moved it to the Foley/Fx track. Does it really matter much where it is? Or as long as it's there everybody is happy? Should it be on all the splits/stems I deliver?
I'll have 3 splits. One for Dialog, one for Foley/Sfx and the other one a Master Split containing both the dialog and the foley/fx.

Hi Noah, it doesn't really matter what track it is on in your project. But it needs to be on all stems. so what I usually do is put one on a voice track, one on a sfx track, one on a music track.
1Khz at about -20 for 1 frame. When they're all summed it still won't be too loud.
Other thing to watch out for is that there is no reverb or delay send at that point on the track where the pop is - you want it to be dry.
While we're at it, if you are putting line-up tones at the head of a file you really only need 1khz with a digital file, and it should be a -20db unless otherwise requested. *DO NOT put a 0db tone!*

  • I can't seem to change my alert for test tones.  No matter which alert tone I set, it always defaults to "glass."  Thanks

I am unable to change my alert tone for Text Tones or Voicemail.  No matter which tone I select, the phone defaults to "glass."  any help will be appreciated.

    Thanks both of you.
Looks like I didn't have a problem after all. I had naively assumed that moving the volume control in the menu bar would play the selected alert sound (just as it used to do in OS9 and 10.1.5), but obviously this is not the case. Like you, I do indeed get the correct sound if I get a genuine alert.

  • Recording the Test Oscillator 1khz tone as audio?

Hi everyone, I'm pretty sure this must be possible but can I record the sound from an instrument track onto an audio track? I'm just trying to record the test oscillator so that I have a 1khz tone in Audio format so that I can callibrate my turntables and dj mixer properly and hopefully figure out a few of the balance issues going on. Thanks in advance, cheers,

  • Have pc with 2 nic cards. One is for network and the other is for testing hardware communication.

As the unit communicates with test software it generate data output that needs to go back to pc hard drive then the program copies the program over the other nic to a server shared folder.
But as of recently if test unti is off then the network is fine and see all mapped drives.
But once I turn on the test unit then the mapping is gone and will not be able to map drives at all.
Must then turn off test unit then reboot to get mappings back.
What has happend?  Why does this now happen after visiting windows update?   It makes testing the hardware impossible.

    Hi,
It maybe something causes the mapping drives lost, you can use net use command to map your drives with persistent parameter.
If this doesn’t work, I would recommend  to use process monitor to check what’s happened during your operation.

  • 5G Tests

FWIW, I just picked up my 5G (30 gig) and of course had to try the diagnostic tests to see if any bad pixels. In doing so, noticed a couple of other interesting tests having to do with the display backlight and hard drive. The display backlight test allows selection of two brightness levels (besides "off") - 50% and 100%. So, the backlight is capable of operating at a 50% brightness level which caught my interest in particular as IMO the backlight is much too bright in low light surroundings. It would be most useful IMO to have a brightness adjust option for these conditions.
One other interesting "test" is for the hard drive which displays info such as PowerOn Hours, (3 in my case)Start/Stops (237), plus some things called Retracts (0), Reallocs (0) and Pending Sectors (0). The PowerOn Hours or Start/Stops might be useful for checking to see if your newly purchased iPod is actually new or a repack or, to keep track of HD wear & tear.
BTW, I also ran some test tones (wave and MP3) through the o'scope and was favourably impressed compared to the same for a Nano I previously had (15kH sine wave in the Nano showed some odd looking distortion while the 5G was clean). Also compared pink noise directly from a CD with AppleLossLess and MP3 on the 5G and could not tell the difference whereas I could consistantly discern a small difference on the Nano. I dunno, maybe the Nano was defective........
Anyhow, this is a nice machine but a bit odd in that it takes a good minute to connect to iTunes (after the USB is plugged in) and freezes my computer while doing so. My previous Nano was much faster in that respect. I have USB1.0 so maybe that has something to do with it (?).

That could be alright but I wonder why I did not have the same problem with the Nano? May have to pry my wallet open again and get a USB2 card I guess
