Test your might

Suppose I build a collection and all the elements I add are synchronized, is there ever a way I could have an issue with multiple threads?

only if the elemnts added are not immutable?
synchronized is a lil different from thread safe I
guess.Even if you had immutable objects you could still have issues
consider the equals method. First off, equals is defined in Object as not synchonized, so your equals method probably isn't synchronized. BUT even if it was, or even if you synchronized on it. But then the list you're comparing to might change, so you synchronize on that... even then you could STILL have thread race conditions if that other list wasn't synchronized
... Or you could just make your own collection where the underlying data structure is a public member variable :)

  • Fake Flash Drives Threaten PCs and Networks Alike! Did You Test Yours?

    Hello Brothers;
I wanted to post this in the more mainstream Mac forums because it really does affect everyone who purchases flash drives or ANY memory product online.
In the past year, eBay and Amazon have been flooded with counterfeit flash drives that look identical to name brands. They look JUST LIKE the real deal. I know. Last month I unwarily bought a "Kingston" flash drive on eBay. Though PayPal grudgingly reimbursed me, this goes FAR beyond my being swindled.
Thousands of these fake drives have been purchased on eBay and Amazon as graduation and birthday gifts and party flavors and are landing in the unwary hands of those who jobs cannot tolerate data corrupted by one missing digit. When you walk past a hospital or construction site or industrial plant, someone there is plugging a flash drive into computers for precise medical and drug formula info or to feed instructions to heavy machinery or control a chemical plant or an aspect of our communications infrastructure. Maybe even computers aboard military aircraft and ships. This is an insidious and malignant issue that deserves FAR more attention by media and government than it has.
You can heads-up on this issue, find victim redemption assistance and test your flash drive at: http://sosfakeflash.wordpress.com/
Please write to your local TV station and political representative about this pernicious blight! The person you eventually help might be you! Would you want the doctor or med tech managing your mother in a hospital to be carrying a fake flash?

Sounds like all of the troubleshooting regarding your home's wiring has been done. The noise on the phone line says what the problem is, and we should address the issues with voice FIRST before we start dealing with the DSL. Generally, once the phone is solved, the DSL will follow along.
Since you're receiving noise on the line, especially when the DSL is online you need to give Verizon a call during the time of the static from another line. Use a cell phone or a neighbor's line. When prompted, enter in your phone number and then navigate to Technical Support to the Telephone Repair section. When the agent comes on, tell them you are receiving Intermittent Static. They should proceed to perform a test called the MLT test, which will check your copper loop for any problems that may be developing such as shorts or unusual resistency (which can cause issues with DSL and phone). If the test picks up a problem, the agent should immediately be able to write up a trouble ticket with the details of the test for a technician to repair it. Just be aware, do NOT answer the phone or use your phone line while the test is ran. Stick to the alternate phone you are dialing support from. It requires the copper loop to be idle. DSL can be kept on with no problems. While in the call and when the tech visits (if they need to stop down), do NOT mention the DSL. Let them do the task of repairing the phone line. Once the problem is solved, you should see the DSL line stabalize, and if the statistics improve enough, the speed return and increase past the highest levels you've seen in a few days.
Your line should be short enough to have 3Mbps running on it. Just need to get the loop repaired

  • How do you test your new laptops?

To the gurus or people who have researched this question:  How do you test your new laptops?
When you get a new laptop, what do you do to test it?
My X1Carbon might arrive in a couple weeks, and reading about all the failures and DOAs is scary. So assuming mine is not simply DOA, how do you shake out the less obvious or more obscure problems?
I did search for this info before posting. One other person asked the question,
    >> Would appreciate advice re optimal set-up and what testing/diagnostics to do to determine if ther...
    but no one answered.

With testing I start with the basics and work my way to the harder stuff.
Inspect the external condition of the machine.
Boot and enter the BIOS before Windows. Review settings then power off.
Boot from Acronis True Image Home backup/recovery DVD and clone HDD or SSD and thus the factory image before it's ever booted to Windows.
Boot to Windows and look carefully at the Lenovo factory image and try to get an understanding for the Lenovo software and why it is there.  This does not include the other software from Microsoft, Google, etc.
Create Lenovo Factory Image DVD set with Rescue and Recovery.  Throw disk set in the box or put on the shelf in case the machine is ever re-sold.
Test all of the ports - I test every port on the machine for my expected usage.  For instance, in the case of the X1 Carbon I would confirm the mini DisplayPort connection works correctly with an external LCD panel.  If the machine had a IEEE firewire port or something, test that.  Test the USB 3.0 ports with a known working external external enclosure and verify transfer speeds.
Test the SSD speed with CrystalDiskMark, ATTO and AS Disk Benchmark software to get a good overview of the performance.
Install HWiNFO and look carefully at the components.  Observe turbo boosting, thermals and fan RPM over the course of a few days for battery and AC power.
Do at least one full battery discharge and recharge.  Observe the cycle and details are being properly displayed and recorded in Lenovo Power Manager.
Download all software and drivers from support.lenovo.com for the model being tested.  Confirm visually you have all the core components needed.  Core includes the drivers, power management driver, Power Manager, hotkeys, etc.
Flatten the machine and install Windows or Linux from scratch.  Install drivers and software.
Re-test ports and confirm the machine is working properly.
Benchmark the SSD again.  Confirm no change.
Install HWiNFO and confirm turbo, thermals and fan speeds are still proper.
Install core applications and test them.  There may be core features in Windows that also need to be installed and tested.  For instance, Windows 8 Hyper-V for virtualization.
Connect any external devices you expect to use and test them.  For instance, video cameras, smartphones, mp3 players, digital cameras, printers, USB docks, etc.
Do several battery tests with your typical applications and behavior.  The goal here is to simulate how the machine will be used in your day-to-day setting or travel scenarios.  I usually do at least three tests.  This can be rather time consuming with long battery life machines so I get a lot of other testing out of the way first.
By the time you get to this point, if you haven't hit any major roadblocks you'll start to have a good feel for the machine, and if it is going to be a keeper or not.  The assumption here is that during this timeframe you have been observing the screen, keyboard, and trackpad performance to see if it's to your liking.  The other assumption is that you are using the machine and applications in the scenarios you are purchasing it for.
I don't run synthetic benchmarks.  I prefer to test a machine against the scenarios I expect to use it with.  I spend most of the first week making this assessment.  If any major hardware defects are present, the machine is automatically returned.  I do not repair machines just received.  No exceptions.
Week 2 is for ironing out any minor issues and assessing if the machine meets the requirements for the scenarios it will support.  If it does, it is kept.  If it does not, it is returned.  This week includes subjective and objective input.  You have to weigh the pros and cons for a machine against your priorities. It is rare that a machine is perfect so you have to decide the ROI for the machine.  Service and Support must be considered so week two might include a call to support for any unresolved issues.  Don't discount the service you receive during this period.
After week two, you are likely right on top of the last day to return a Lenovo machine.  The return period is 21 days from the invoice date (I believe), not the day the machine is received so make sure you are well aware of it.  After 21 days, the machine is yours for good unless you sell it.  Decision time.
    Good luck.

  • Test your knowledge questions

    Hello,
It would be interresting to get access to some "test your knowledge" questions & answers sets.
I have to give a test to some 10 trainees that I am giving the NET310 training and it would be great to have access to a professionally prepared set of questions & answers for this (just like in other BC4xx training courses).
Anyone can help me on this topic?
    Thanks in advance,
    Peter

    Hi traja,
Let me answer one by one.
    1. For updating values using single SQL, use
    statement.executeUpdate(" UPDATE TABLE SET MYFIELD=MYFIELD"+qty+"WHERE.....");
qty is just a string variable.
2.To enter null values for a date field, use two single quotes without a space. For eg,
    String mydate="''";
    Don't use null;
    3.You can use the javascript object Date to get the current date(only client and not server date);
    For eg,
    var mydate=new Date();
You can then parse mydate to get the month, day and year. Also, the Date object has different constructors, for different date formats. You can use them too.
    Hope this helps.

  • Sudden Motion Sensor defect on MacBook ? Could you test your MacBook ?

    Hi !
    Got my new MacBook black.
I wanted to test the Sudden Motion Sensor with amstracker and amsvisualizer.
But only the x and y values change....the x value stays on 0 and sometimes jumps to -1 when i tilt the MacBook ?
Is it a defect or a Bug ?
Please test yours and write back !
    Thanks

Apple seems to frequently change the details about
how to access the SMS data making previous versions
of SMS-reading utilities useless on the new machines
until they're updated. Almost certainly software
    incompatibility rather than hardware failure.
I would have to agree with this as the visualiser that you gave don't work right on my MacBook.

  • TEST YOUR MACBOOK FOR RANDOM SHUTDOWNS

    http://techpaedia.com/apple/2006/08/27/testing-your-macbook-for-random-shut-down s/
i encourage yo uto all check that out, im running the test right now, hoping for the best
for all of you people who know your stuff, could this be bad for my computer?

The procedure will not harm a normal MacBook. It will cause the fans to run at fairly high speed to keep the CPU cool. (If your fans were broken or disconnected, then the CPU would overheat; that's why I said "normal.")
I recently read someone conjecture that the GMA950 graphics chip can overheat, causing a shutdown. This may be what they're trying to test with the procedure.
I've also seen speculation that there's a mechanical short between the top case and the main logic board. If that's the cause of the shutdowns, then I don't see the "yes" procedure having any value.

    http://cal003104.student.utwente.nl/nForce/Analog loopback 16-bit, 96 kHz.htm
    Conclusions :
@44.1KHz we see a high InterModulation Distortion >4% @48 and 96KHz the IMD is good, this can be explained because of the fixed 48KHz sample frequency of the nForce audio, so @44.1 the high IMD is caused by the sample-rate-conversion. @96KHz sample-rate-conversion doesn't give such a high IMD because the sample-rate-conversion-ratio is 2.00 round.
@96KHz we see the DAC and/or the ADC is and the end of its capacity, this explaines the -2.07dB at 15KHz. This also occurs when using an external DAC so my guess is this a problem of the ADC.
So use 48KHz for highest quality recording.

    http://cal003104.student.utwente.nl/nForce/Digital Out AC3 - ADP303 16-bit, 48 kHz.htm
    Conclusions :
Stereo Digital out gives a better frequency response than analog (only when using a good DAC!!!)
AC3 out gives very strange results, I think the results one gets here are very dependent on drivers, also AC3 out is always lower quality than Stereo. However when using Digital Out Stereo to your receiver and decoding Pro-Logic sound quality should be worse than AC3.
For highest quality output use a external high quality DAC
People that are using speakersystems like 4point surround and DTT-whatever sets, should first upgrade their speakers/amplifiers and don't worry about better DAC's first.
Marcelo3d : It looks like the DAC in your sony isn't too good, however it might as well be the quality of the pre-amp or the tone controls. Try using a tape-out instead of pre-out to bypass pre-amp and tone-controls. There is however a possibility the receiver wont output digital in to analog out. When program crashes on crosstalk export you swapped left-right channels.

  • Test Your BlackBerry Phone for any Problems with Special Shortcut

If you own a BlackBerry mobile phone (or plan to buy one), here’s a very useful shortcut (or can we say Easter Egg) that enables you to perform a complete health checkup of your BlackBerry hardware.
You will be able to test the keys of your BlackBerry keyboard, trackball movements, audio volume, Bluetooth connection, handset, speakers, LED, LCD screen pixels, etc.
To begin the test, click "Options" icon on the home screen of your BlackBerry and then select "Status."
On the status screen, type the wor d "test" without quotes and from the menu on the Device Self Test Application screen, select Start.
If you have a BlackBerry Pearl or another model that supports SureType, use the multi-tap input method to type "test".
As you may have seen in the test report, it says "Fail" for the Keypad Backlight Test on my BlackBerry Curve.

  • How do you test your firewire port

I have a bad feeling that I might have fried my firewire port by "hot-plugging" a Mbox pro into my MacBook Pro (I'm an idiot). Does anyone know if there is a simple way to check if the firewire port is still operable?

    doagan wrote:

    First thing to do:
System Profiler > Hardware > FireWire
    What does it say?
Second, try it with a known-good FW device. Even if SP reports FW present, it's possible that it's not working. If you plug in and turn on the known-good FW device and SP reports its presence, the port should be OK.
I might have fried my firewire port by "hot-plugging" a Mbox pro
The FW specification allows for hot swapping. However, there have been reports of damage occurring due to hot swapping. The problems seem to have to do with badly designed hardware or with connector issues, eg,

£26 per month - not good BT

I agree with the OP,reporting anything can be fatal.
It would be fine if the repair work done did not effect anyone`s lines and conections, but that is not the case unfortunately.
And the BT Wholesale tester always gives me the wrong readings, high ping readings, low upload etc,it is useless.
Then it just copys those bad results to the server and shows them using java code.
To prove the point speedtest.net always shows better results [depending on the server used],but unfortunately BT only count the results given by the Wholesale tester].
I am now at 66Mbps due to the DLM being confused by the slightest blit in the power and my profile has dropped from 77.44 to 67.33.
And the worst thing is that as customers we can`t do anything about it,except leave.

  • Can you please test your Unibody 17in 9600 graphics card.

I have a problem where I am getting green lines and distortion lines on my screen when I am playing COD 4. I've been reading through forums on what is happening to other people with the same problems. I have read that some have tried a SMC reset and have had good results temporarily.
I think there is a way to replicate the problem by going to apple's movie trailer site and downloading three HD trailers. Put all the trailers on loop and let run for at least 10 minutes.
    Please post your results..
Note: If you did do a SMC reset put the machine to sleep and then wake it up and see if the graphics problem is still gone.
    Thanks.

    Hi,
if you want to speed Motion up for under 300USD - the best way is to change your graphic card to ATI 9800 Pro Mac Edition for 249USD.
This card you can find here:
    https://eshop.macsales.com/item/ATI%20Technologies/100435066/
There is a faster card to your computer - NVIDIA 6800 GT DDL or NVIDIA 6800 Ultra DDL - but there are much more expensive:
    http://www.welovemacs.com/6613441.html
    http://www.welovemacs.com/6613332.html
And in fact, it is almost all you can do with your computer.
Of course you can ad some RAM (I don't know how many RAM do you have now). For about 90 USD you can buy at OWC 1GB of RAM - it will help a little in Motion.
I think that you can not have PCI-X graphic card installed in your computer - only AGP card will work.
And besides of it having two cards, if you don't have 3 monitors connected, doesn't have any sense. Only cards called crossfired can be installed in pair for have better performance.
    Marek.
