Sensible benchmarks for a desktop Linux system?
By the end of the month, I'll have done a massive overhaul of my PC - going to brand spanking new just about everything. But it's not enough to just know that my new system will be faster. I want to know how much faster it is with quantifiable numbers and everything.
So one of the big things I'll be looking at will be video games. Doing that is easy though - just use something like what review sites like hardocp do and count my framerates.
But on the other side, I want to see how my linux performance changes. I know I can measure my FLOPS, Bogomips, and other numbers, but those are kind of abstract. Doesn't show anything about the applications I use every day.
So what can you guys think of that would be sensible to do for benchmarking a Linux system to get before-and-after comparisons?
My thoughts:
Page renderings in Firefox. Make some kind of convulted, ugly mess of a page to render then see how long it takes.
Code compilation - it's something I do from time to time, and easy enough to benchmark.
Video encoding and decoding - Something I do every now and then using mplayer et al
Audio encoding and decoding - I try to keep my music collection in ogg format
Rendering - I'm starting to play with Blender, maybe make a horrifically complex scene (or better yet, download one) and time the render process?
Database queries - This isn't something I do a lot on my system, but more and more applications are starting to use database backends (like amaroK although I don't use it) I think there are benchmark suites available for MySQL and Postgres
My only other thought is that I should try to measure the increase in responsiveness I get from going from a single core to dual core system. Trying to measure that is kind of tough though. Maybe a scenario where I do something arbitrary in the background, then measure dropped frames in mplayer playing a video of some sort?meh. that benchmark sucked. Not much info given on testing environment, number of runs, etc.
Some very odd marks in there as well...makes me wonder if he just ran the tests once and said "good enough".

Adobe Flash Plugin for 64-bits Linux is back !!
After being discontinued by Adobe, Flash for 64-bits Linux seems to be back. Is there still a maintainer for flashplugin on Arch64 ? I think it is still in beta but flashplugin and x86_64 users would be grateful if the package comes back in the repo !

Hey macromedia/adobe
When can we have support for 64 bit Linux? The problem is
that most new hardware
is moving towards 64 bit architectures. We have a brand new
server, RedHat
Enterprise 4, coldfusion will not run on it.
Direct Contact: [email protected]I couldn't agree more - it's insane that an enterprise
product isn't supporting x86_64 instructions in 2007.
On a more constructive note - does anybody out there have a
compiled connector for RHEL or CentOS 4.X, the 64 bit version? I
ask because I've found numerous pages on the web describing how it
works great for people after they compile it on their own. Well, I
can't get it to work. I have CentOS 4.4 x64, and I try to run this
script after successfully installing CFMX 7.0.2 by using the method
to sed out the checks for the right kernels, etc. Here is the
script I try to run inside the connectors/src directory:
/usr/sbin/apxs -c -n jrun20 -S
LIBEXECDIR=/opt/coldfusionmx7/runtime/lib/wsconfig/1/ mod_jrun20.c
jrun_maptable_impl.c jrun_property.c jrun_session.c
platform.c \
jrun_mutex.c jrun_proxy.c jrun_utils.c | more
/usr/sbin/apxs -i -n jrun20 -S
LIBEXECDIR=/opt/coldfusionmx7/runtime/lib/wsconfig/1/ mod_jrun20.la
strip /opt/coldfusionmx7/runtime/lib/wsconfig/1/mod_jrun20.so
All the paths are correct, and when I run it I get about 1000
warning lines from apxs about invalid characters and such in the .c
file. Good times.
Can somebody tell me how the hell to get this to work on 64
bit CentOS 4.x? I'm going crazy here... and Adobe - GET OFF YOUR

Which version of Workshop to use with WebLogic Server 10.0 for 64-bit Linux
I've downloaded and installed the 64-bit version of WebLogic Server for Linux. It is running on a 64-bit Xeon RHEL 5 machine with 64-bit Sun JVM.
During the install, I selected WebLogic Server and Weblogic Workshop but it appears that Workshop was not installed. Apparently, only the Runtime for Workshop was installed. I'm not really sure what good that does for me.
We need to use the Workshop IDE to develop apps. Is there a 10.0 version of Workshop for 64-bit Linux?Hi Anup,
Maybe you should be a bit more specific about what you want to do. Coherence is just Java and has been supported WebLogic for years in the same way most other third-party Java libraries and APIs are. I first started using Coherence about four or five years ago with WebLogic 8.

Adobe Reader support for 64-bit Ubuntu systems
Any attempt to install any current version of Adobe Reader fails...
Usually with a "Wrong Architure - I386" message.
if you try to follow the "new" intructions for using apt-get you get the following...
sudo apt-get install acroread
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Package acroread is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source
E: Package acroread has no installation candidate
Two questions:
1.) Does Adobe have any intensions on supporting 64-bit Linux?
2.) Does anybody have any suggestions on how to get the reader to work on a 64-bit system?Adobe Reader is 32-bit only, and so is the plugin. This may change some time in the future, but for now it's 32-bit.

Video capture card for 64 bit operating systems
We capture video that comes in analogue from a satellite feed. It comes in 24 hours per day. I have taken that and fed into a pci Green Valley Canopus capture card ACEDVio, (RCA fittings), and then I capture using Scenalyer. I have done this for three years, with great success. Since I am now using Windows 7, I have discovered that The Green Valley card does NOT work with 64 bit. I contacted Gree Valley and they admit that it will not work. The EXTERNAL Canopus 110 does work, but it is not reliable for 24/7 use, because sometimes it will shut down. I need an internal card that will stay on all of the time. Can anyone help with this?
John,
Thank you for taking the time to offer a responce. As to the "dual boot" suggestion: I do not know how to do that, although I could research just how to do it. My conserns are: XP is being completely abandoned by Microsoft. I am challenged every time that I have to do a re-install using XP, (I manage 26 computers for a company). For about a year now, it has been more and more time consumng, because Microsoft seems to be making it that way. I am guessing that the "XP" part would be for running 32 bit and the Win 7 part would be for the 64 bit, is that true? More on the subject would be good. Where to find inforation as to using that option.
It would be great if there was a video capture card that would work with Premiere and the Win 7 64 bit operating system. There must be someone that makes one. A guy at Tigert Direct suggested a Haupauge WinTV-HVR1250. I am going to have to call Haupauge to confirm. The biggest thing is ALWAYS that it will work with Premiere, and our Scenalyzer program -
Where is the version for 64-bit Linux?
When I go to the Download page for Linux, it just has the 32-bit version. Of course I'm running 64-bit Linux so I don't want to run 32-bit Firefox.
Always download Firefox from the Mozilla servers.

System Requirements for 64 bit - Xeon systems support???
Hi everyone,
I'm a Vegas Studio Platinum weekend hobbyist and I'm thinking about making the switch to a CS5 environment. I have a trial version of Premiere Pro CS5, but unfortunately it keeps crashing when I try playing MJPEG videos from the timeline. The videos have been captured using Black Magic's Intensity Pro card and Media Express, and I'm able to work with them in my old Vegas Studio Platinum environment, but when I try it on Premiere Pro it crashes consistently just playing them from the timeline. The videos are MJPEGs 1080p-29.97...
I'm hoping to resolve this soon so I can decide if I should switch before my trial expires. Any help will be extremely appreciated!
Here's a little more on my system:
It's a dual Xeon 64 bit Windows 7 Ultimate with 24 GB of ram, and raid 0 drives (at 5000 rpm though...)
When the system crashes, it gives this error:

The system requirements page for a 64bit windows system only lists Core 2 duo, and AMD processors, but I'm guessing that can't be right as Adobe would be leaving out most of the best processors currently on the market (i7, Xeon, etc.)
I'm also starting to suspect the drives may be the problem as they are Raid 0, but 5000 rpm older drives. But don't want to spend the time and money before finding out for sure...
Thanks again for any pointers on this one!!!Welcome to the forum.
As mentioned, all things MPEG-2 are disabled in the trial. Now, if you have MJPEG, this ARTICLE might, or might not, be of help. Even with the correct MJPEG CODEC installed, the limitation with MPEG might eliminate editing MJPEG too.
Good luck, and remember to fully test CS5, Adobe offers a full, 30-day money-back guarantee. Once you buy it, if you do not like it, just return it within 30 days, and you get your $ back.

Adobe Type Manager Light for 64-bit operating system?
Can anyone help me locate Adobe Type Manager Light for a 64-bit operating system? The downloadable version on Adobe's website appears to only be compatible with 32-bit systems. Or, is there another type manager program that will allow me to use Type 1 fonts on a 64-bit, Windows Vista system?
Several third party font management applications are fully compatible with 64-bit Vista and 64-bit Windows 7, including my own company's. That would be Extensis Suitcase Fusion 2.
http://www.extensis.com/en/products/suitcasefusion2/index.jsp
If you need ATM Light for multiple master font support, there are two key issues. First, ATM Light can run on 64-bit Windows, but won't install. Second, it is incompatible with User Account Control, a security feature in Vista. The following procedure has been reported to work on 64-bit Vista:
- install ATM Light on a 32-bit version of Windows
- turn off User Account Control on your 64-bit Vista computer (YES, this makes your computer less secure)
- copy the ATM directory over to the 64-bit Vista computer

LAN(wired connection) Driver for G500 64 bit linux systems
Hi,
I installed different 64 bit OS of Linux (Fedora18, Debian7, Ubuntu12.4) on my Lenovo G500 but LAN did not work either of them.
I found out that the LAN driver was not automatically installed.
However with 32bit ubuntu, the LAN drivers installed automatically.
At my workplace I am supposed to use LAN connection only. Please let me know if any 64bit LAN drivers are available for linux and the link, where I can download those from??
Thank you.My G500 Runs Debian Jessie beautifully -- dual -booted with Doze 8.1. I used gparted to shrink the Doze partition to make room for 4 linux partitions: swap, Linux1, Linux2 and (the largest) home partition.

6280 "Erron in Connection" problem
I have bought a new 6280 last week. I often travel between Karnataka and Kerala states. My provider is Airtel. When I am in Kerala , the phone shows "Erron in Connection" when I try to make a call. If I put the SIM in any other phone, it works well.
