Testing after CPU patches

I have successful applied CPU July 2011 ( patch 12406914 and all the post patches)
However my functional consultant wants to know what is the functional impact of this patch so that she can just test these.
As you know CPU are generally have no functional impact and testing should be make sure all ok after patching. Quick and dirty testing.
anybody has a test plan / specific items to be tested after CPUs.
Thank a million in advance

Hi,
Shall i apply the patches in new home and skip post installtion steps which will be run after logging in database as that were done when database was 32 bit?It depends that how you migrated
As far as i know, directly copy paste of database files from 32 bit Linux to 63 bit Linux is not an appropriate way of migration, but, it i have seen this working fine, and if you adopted this method, i don't think that you need to execute post installation as your dictionary/plsql is already updated when you executed scripts on 32 bit.
If you used used transportable tablespaces method and converted files using RMAN, then you would already have done post installation tasks when you created new database on 64 bit before plugging in the transported tablespaces.
If you used export/import, even then you would have done all post installation tasks when you created new database on 64 bit before doing import.

  • New Archived log entry in alert log after cpu patch 19 applied

    Has anyone applied October critical patch for 11.1.0.7? I applied the cpu Patch 19 (8892977) for 11.1.0.7 on several windows2008 servers and after the patch the alert log displays a new message everytime a redo log transfers. This only happens on servers that have archivelog on. It looks like there is some kind of trace set. Anyone know know what the message is?
    Thanks,

    Archived Log entry 10937 added for thread 1 sequence 10938 ID 0xa96e3908 dest 10:

    Hi Mark!
    Yes, Oracle informed me that this message is normal and is only used for formational purposes. I should just ignore it.
    Did you apply patch19? I have also found issues with a high amount of "waits" of type of "other". Some jobs are running slightly slower also. Also, if you check your "database health link" on dbconsole home page you will see consistant "non-critical" alerts. I don't have these alerts on servers not yet patched. This alerts appear to be caused by wait events of "other".

  • Performance check after CPU

    Dear colleagues,
    Is any posilble check or test (benchmark) of DB performance before and after CPU patching?
    Any testing SAP or SQL report, which makes a load on DB?
    Thank you for advice.
    Best Regards
    Jakub Vaněk

    Those test would be synthetic and may or may not reflect your current environment.
    I'd check some long running reports in your environment if you see any difference.

  • Sapstart fails after installation of CPU-Patch April2009 on Oracle 10.2.0.4

    Hi Experts,
    after installing the CPU-Patch April2009 for Oracle 10.2.0.4, startsap fails with error code 12.
    Starting everything manually works (lsnrctl start, sqlplus and do startup, after that startsap works).
    When the listener and the database are running, things like R3trans -x also work without errors.
    I found a SAP-Note 97953 but I don't know if this is the solution. Some of the oracle-executables in the bin-directory have been modified. So there is a "oracle" and a "oracle0" . The timestamp indicates to me that these files were modified while implementing the CPU-Patch.
    I also checked SAP-Note 583861but with no success.
    regards
    Dirk

    For me this all looks o.k. when the database is down R3trans won't be able to reach it and if the database is up it works. But why I can't then just execute "sapstart" ?

  • CPU patch July 2010 on Oracle 11.1.0.7 database

    Hi,
    I want to install the July2010 CPU patch (9655014) on a 11.1.0.7 database which was initially created with version 11.1.0.6.
    The README file of the patch states the following about recompiling views:
    3.2.2.2 Recompiling Views in the Database
    You may skip this section if you have recompiled views for this database during the installation of a previous CPU or if the database was created with Release 11.1.0.6 or later.
    So I assumed that I do not need to recompile the views but a little further in the README file I read:
    If you want to check whether view recompilation has already been performed for the database, execute the following statement.
    SELECT * FROM registry$history where ID = '6452863';
    If the view recompilation has been performed, this statement returns one or more rows. If the view recompilation has not been performed, this statement returns no rows.
    When I execute the select it returns no rows. So this is confusing. Should I perform a view recompilation or not?
    And when I execute recompile_precheck_jan2008cpu.sql (strange name for a July 2010 CPU) it says:
    SQL> @recompile_precheck_jan2008cpu.sql
    Running precheck.sql...
    Number of views to be recompiled :1969
    Number of objects to be recompiled :4019
    Please follow the README.txt instructions for running viewrecomp.sql
    PL/SQL procedure successfully completed.
    thanks in advance.
    regards,
    Ivan

    Short answer: you dont need to run view_recompile_jan2008cpu.sql
    Long answer:
    >
    SELECT * FROM registry$history where ID = '6452863';
    If the view recompilation has been performed, this statement returns one or more rows. If the view recompilation has not been performed, this statement returns no rows.
    When I execute the select it returns no rows. So this is confusing. Should I perform a view recompilation or not?
    >
    You will only get an entry in registry$history if you had a database that you had actually run the view_recompile_jan2008cpu.sql script which inserts a row into the table at the end of the script:
    view_recompile_jan2008cpu.sql
    Rem =======================================================================
    Rem Insert values for patch into registry.
    Rem =======================================================================
    INSERT INTO registry$history (action_time, action, id, comments)
            values ( SYSTIMESTAMP, 'CPU', &&PATCH_NUMBER, '&&PATCH_DESC' );
    COMMIT; In your case, you will get no entries in the table BUT you do not have to run the view recompilation so long as the database was created using a patched Oracle home of a release where Oracle says the view recompilation is not required.
    >
    SQL> @recompile_precheck_jan2008cpu.sql
    Running precheck.sql...
    Number of views to be recompiled :1969
    >
    This script has a very simple logic that just generates count of views and dependant objects that would need recompilation. The selection criteria does not include actually checking whether you actually need to apply the view recompilation script.
    You can test this yourself:
    Case#1: Run the recompile_precheck_jan2008cpu.sql on a database where you have applied the view recompilation script. You will find the count shows a non-zero value.
    SQL> col action_time format a32
    SQL> col version format a15
    SQL> col version format a15
    SQL> select action_time, version, id from registry$history where ID=6452863;
    ACTION_TIME                      VERSION                 ID
    24-JUL-10 12.52.15.390000 PM                        6452863
    SQL> @recompile_precheck_jan2008cpu.sql
    Running precheck.sql...
    Number of views to be recompiled :1637
    Number of objects to be recompiled :3487
    Please follow the README.txt instructions for running viewrecomp.sql
    PL/SQL procedure successfully completed.Case#2: Create a new database using a version that does not require the view recompilation patch. Run the recompile_precheck_jan2008cpu.sql. You will find the view count shows a non-zero value even though you do not need to recompile the views as mentioned in the Oracle patch notes.

They do not mean that the 32 bit patch should also be applied on 64 bit Windows o/s having OAS 10.1.3.5? I just want to make sure I skip this CPU since I have 64 bit o/s.
    I ask because the list of bugs fixed in the README for the 32 bit patch list 32 bit bug fixes , and then 64 bit bug fixes.

    Somu, please check a topic 3 lines below. No, there's not a separate 64-bit installer, but there's a work-around albeit not supported by oracle.

  • FTPing .zip CPU patch files...

    Hi
    I have downloaded a .zip file for Oracle CPU Patch and wants to move it to UINX server. After connecting the UNIX server, beofre I say "put <filename>"...do I have to say "binary"?
    Your answer will be highly appreciated.
    Thanks & Regards
    Ahmed.

    Hello,
    Besides the previous answer, generally (if you click on the patch detail) you have the size of the zip file in bytes.
    For instance:
    Size 1.1G (1123325074 bytes) So, once you have sent the zip file on the Unix server, you can check if it's size is correct.
    Hope this help.
    Best regards,
    Jean-Valentin

    Hi Muddassar,
    Hope you are doing good.
    A new note has been released exclusively for this issue. Please see:
    note 1937296 - SUM fails at start-shadow-instance-dm step. This is not
    an issue with the SCAs and more with the kernel employed.
    You will need to make sure that you are on the latest kernel so that
    this can be resolved.

  • Need info on CPU patches

    Hi,
    Could someone please explain me what CPU patches are. Is it some security patch?
    Is it mandatory to apply these patches every quarter. And if we apply, will there be any performance related issues?
    Thanks!

    The application of the Oracle quarterly patch CPU set is optional. If your testing requirements are too high to make application of multiple patches per year impractical then you might just apply every other or even one of the patch sets per year. The CPU patches are cumulative so if you apply the most recent you have all the prior patches.
    The above is providing you do not need a specific fix provided by one of the patch sets. You current version of Oracle and when you plan to upgrade may also be a factor in determining if you need/want to apply a specific CPU.

  • SOA BPEL 10.1.3.5.0 CPU Patches

    We are on 10.1.3.3.1 at US Marine Corps -Department of Defense
    We dont have a security patches for 10.1.3.3.1
    open issues/questions:
    Open Issues:
    1. What is Oracle's recommendation from Oracle about upgrading 10.1.3.5 vs 10.1.3.4 (CPU Patch support length). Also CPU Patch support policy for BAM 10.1.3.3.1 and B2B 10.1.2.3.
    2. Any MLRs to apply after upgrading SOA/BPEL/WSM/BAM/B2B 10.1.3.5 ?
    3. Interoperability of OWSM 10.1.3.4, BAM 10.1.3.3.1, B2B 10.1.2.3 and SOA/BPEL 10.1.3.5. Can they co-exist or must they(one or more) be in same release level?
    What is the supported method
    Please advise
    thanks

    Did you find a solution to this issue? We are having a similar issue trying to deploy a Paypal IPN on OAS 10.1.2.3. The IPN messages coming from Paypal appear to be attempting an SSLv2 handshake. In our case SSLv2 is disabled due to our security requirements so the connection is killed by our App Server. We have found that manually sending the IPN messages works correctly.

  • After Java patch 1.7.0_07 ENable applet plug-in and Web start checkbox is gone!

    Hello all,
    Using ML 10.8.1 and Safair 6.0
    After Java patch 1.7.0_07 ENable applet plug-in and Web start checkbox is gone! The check box to enable Safari to load Java pages is 100% gone, missing, just not there anymore.
    When I go to the Java test page it shows that I have Java 7 loaded. Has anyone else run into this problem or have a solution to enable true load loading in Safari and bring back the Enable applet plug-in and Web Start application check box in ML...
    Thanks

    I found out something very interesting. I noticed that another page would show up for less than have a second before the ML Java Preference would show up. I did a video recording of this and moved frame by frame. I show that the page / pane showing up had the following option:
                    Run applets:  in their own process
                                         within their browser process
    Both boxes for the two are unchecked.
    Then this page would disappear and nother would show up without the option / check box
    Enable applet plugin and Web Start applications
    Strange

  • Database rolling upgrade cpu patch with minimal service outage

    Oracle 11gR2 Primary Instance
    Oracle 11gR2 Active Physical Standby
    Requirement of applying CPU and CVE patches with minimal downtime. I believe that I've been able to apply CPU patch to Active Standby after deferring redo transport and applying patch to active physical standby first and then performing a manual switchover to have the standby become the primary and former-primary become the standby and they apply CPU Patch there and then perform another role transition to its original role.
    Appreciate your experience with primary and active physical standby rolling upgrades/patches. Thanks

    Hello;
    I believe you are over thinking this. All you have to do on the Standby is install the patch. No switchover, no SQL. No nothing.
    The SQL will move from the Primary to the Standby.
    Check the readme for the patch closely or post the patch number if you want to confirm.
    OR
    How do you apply a Patchset,PSU or CPU in a Data Guard Physical Standby configuration [ID 278641.1]
    ( If it helps I had the same thoughts after my first Data Guard setup !! )
    If you are trying to avoid downtime entirely the switchover will take about as long as the patch.
    If you have RAC this is interesting :

  • Do we need to run catbundle.sql for ANY new db we create after CPU's?

    We're in the middle of reviewing the JAN2009CPU readme, and found a curiosity in the patch notes.
    - Our platform is Oracle 10.2.0.4 Enterprise Edition on Solaris 10 64-bit.
    In the Post-Patch instructions for the CPU, we see the following clause
    {color:#3366ff} ...
    3.3.5, "Post Installation Instructions for New and Upgraded Databases"
    These instructions are for both non-RAC environments and RAC environments
    when a database is created or upgraded after the installation of CPUJan2009.
    You must execute the steps in Section 3.3.2.1, "Loading Modified .sql Files
    into the Database"" and Section 3.3.2.2, "Recompiling Views in the Database"
    for *any new database that was created* by any of the following methods:
    - Using DBCA (Database Configuration Assistant) to select a sample database (General, Data Warehouse, Transaction Processing)
    - Using a script that was created by DBCA that creates a database from a sample database
    - Cloning a database that was created by either of the two preceding methods,
    and if Section 3.3.2.1, "Loading Modified .sql Files into the Database"
    was not executed after CPUJan2009 was applied.
    Upgraded databases require no post-installation steps to be executed.
    {color}
    I don't understand -- does this mean we have to do the following any time
    we create a new database from now on?
    - run dbca
    {color:#ff0000} - run '@?/rdbms/admin/catbundle.sql cpu apply'
    - check $ORACLE_HOME/cfttoollogs/catbundle/catbundle_CPU_&lt;SID&gt;_APPLY_&lt;TimeStamp&gt;.log for errors
    - run '@?/cpu/view_recompile/view_recompile_jan2008cpu'{color}
    I would have thought that the new SQL scripts under $ORACLE_HOME are already
    upgraded, so that we do not *have* to do any extra work on top of simply running
    dbca to create a new DB.
    I see a similar phrase in the CPU2008JUL (patch 7150470):
    {color:#0000ff} "You must execute the steps in this section (Section 3.3.2.1,
    "Loading Modified .sql Files into the Database") for any new database you create
    or any database upgraded to this release since the CPUJul2008 patch was applied."
    {color}
    .. AND CPU2008OCT (patch 7375644):
    {color:#0000ff} You must execute the steps ... for any new database you create or
    any database upgraded to this release since the CPUOct2008 patch was applied.
    {color}
    .. but the April 2008 CPU (patch 6864068) doesn't have these clauses.
    Can anybody clarify this issue? Have you created DB's after the JAN2009 CPU
    and not run the catbundle.sql, had any problems?

    Edited by: lrp on Feb 4, 2009 2:45 PMIt's pretty explicit:
    *You must execute the steps* in Section 3.3.2.1, "Loading Modified .sql Files
    into the Database"" and Section 3.3.2.2, "Recompiling Views in the Database"
    for any new database that was created <b><i><u>by any of the following methods</u></i></b>:
    - Using DBCA (Database Configuration Assistant) to select a sample database (General, Data Warehouse, Transaction Processing)
    - Using a script that was created by DBCA that creates a database from a sample database
    - Cloning a database that was created by either of the two preceding methods,
    and if Section 3.3.2.1, "Loading Modified .sql Files into the Database"
    was not executed after CPUJan2009 was applied.
    So, if you create a database by any of the explicitly listed methods (all of which are creating a database from a backup that my have been made of a database that was not patched to that level) then you need to run the scripts. If you create a database by some other method (about all that is left is a command line CREATE DATABASE) then part of that creation will necessarily include running the necessary cat* scripts, which will already be at the correct level.
