Testing of LR4 Beta

I tested LR4 for a while and have following comments : - the new developpement tool is very attractive and the results are well above LR3, I would say much more nuanced in the approach. What is still not present is a set of HDR tools or an attempt of a preset HDR ; - the workflow, both import and export, appears to be faster than the previous version ; - using the Diaporama tool very often, I see no improvements versus LR3, very few possibilities regarding the transitions, the matching with a sound record still doesn't work and the export facility is too limited in formats, this is a pitty; - regarding the new facility of setting up a book, which can than be printed thru " Blurb", seems to be very promising ; I only tested the set up without any problems; - the printing facility, although not that much different fro LR3, woks very efficienty. I'm not using the web facility and have not tested it. The integration of a mapping tool looks interesting but I'm not having presntly Photo material that earmarks the sites, so no test as such. Plugs-in with DxO, Photoshop and Silver Efex are working very smoothly.
If a issue, besides the one raised for the diaporama, would be comming up when further testing, I will come back.

The screen shot I posted only occurs when leaving the Develop module. .
When I leave the Book module, it leaves a smaller gray box on the screen, too.
I just found out that whenever it leaves a gray box on the screen, I cannot restart Lightroom 4 Beta until I have done something to interrupt that gray box, like clicking on it or doing anything else that takes over the screen.
No problem leaving any of the other modules.

Installing LR4 Beta but still keep LR3.5

Hi LR people just a quick question (maybe dumb question)...
Can I install the LR4 Beta and still keep my LR3.5? I presume that I just install it in a different folder in my Applications? Did I get that right?

It will install at /Applications/Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 4.app
The default location for Lr3 was /Applications/Adobe Lightroom 3.app
You can run both applications fine, but while Lr4 is in Beta it will not import you Lr3 catalog.
Personally, for testing, I make a copy of some RAW files I already have in Lr3 then import those to Lr4 to experiment with.

LR4 beta white balance on cropped images

I'm not sure if this has been discussed, I could not find a post with silimar issues.
LR4 Beta 64 on WinVista : Nex 5N raw files
WB picker on a cropped image seems to give variable (and wrong) results
I wanted to tweak WB an image that I'd previously cropped and made some adjustments to....WB was already close, the picker on a white fishing bouy was at ~90/88/91. Clicking the picker on bouy gave a strong red shift, about +5 on the red.
1st time I did it I thought I'd jerked the mouse somewhere, tried it again.. and again with similar results. Repeated several time.
I opened LR3 and had no problems with the same image.
I reopened LR4B and got the same problem again.
Undid the crop and the WB adjustment was fine.
I went back to LR3 and cropepd the same image the same way and WB was fine.
Went back to Lr4B and again, WB was off.
I reset the image so that it had no other adjustments. WB was OK but again when I cropped it it was off.
Opened another image and did the same thing. ie full image WB was OK, cropped I got a +5 or so shift, although this time in blue.
Tried it with a different crop and got a -15 on red.
WB zoom level was at max

Take just about any photo and crop so all the sides are moved toward the middle. It isn't hard to find a point on the image where the white balance dropper looks like it's over a near-grey(and its numbers say near-grey), but when you click, the picture gets an extreme colour cast. And the point where you click doesn't go grey, either, but moves much farther from grey.

Note what's happening in the Navigator preview. It's as if the eyedropper were over the yellow jacket, but the numbers on the loupe show grey.

Smart Collection features I don't see in LR4 beta and wonder why not

I've been playing with the new LR4 beta for all of 10 minutes now, and am disappointed to see that Smart Collections haven't moved forward at all.
Things I'd hoped to see:
In the Edit Smart Collection window, why when you add a new rule does it always default to "Rating"? How is that the most likely thing I want? Sure, make it the default for the first rule, but thereafter, I think it would be a lot more useful if it added another rule of the type on the line you pressed '+' on. That is, if I have a "Keywords...Doesn't Contain" rule and press the '+' button on that line, there's a better chance that I want another such rule than that I want yet another "Rating" rule.
Continuing the previous, I think the second rule added should follow slightly different logic. If the default Rating rule wasn't changed to a different type, the default for the second rule shouldn't be "Rating" again to clone the first rule, but rather pick the second most likely rule type. Does Adobe have usage statistics for people's Smart Collections to draw on?
For Keywords rules, there aren't negative operators to match all of the positive operators. So we have Contains, and Doesn't Contain, but we have Contains All and lack Doesn't Contain Any, and we have Contains Words but not Doesn't Contain Words. You can get the desired effect by nesting the positive version in a "None of the following are true" sub-rule, but this feels clumsy. Either give us a symmetric set of logical operators, or take away the negatives and give a clean way to negate arbitrary rules without nesting rules when not needed.
Nested rule sets aren't discoverable. I stumbled across this feature by accident, and only then because I knew how to do the same in iTunes. I'd rather see a third button to the right of each rule line that gave a way to create a nesting than the current magic Option trick. One of the great things about Lightroom is how discoverable most things are; you scarcely need the manual. This is a sharp corner than needs to be knocked off.
There's still no way to refer to one Smart Collection from another! iTunes has had this since approximately forever. It is very useful to be able to extract common rule sets from multiple Smart Collections and simply refer to it from others. We call this the DRY Principle in programming, and it's a Good Thing.
No new Smart Collection rule types. At minimum, I'd hoped to see rules for megapixels and pixel dimensions. I'd like to be able to find all the pics with a long edge 640 pixels or less, for example. Megapixels is actually less useful, because it can be fooled by high aspect ratio images. A banner 4000 px wide and 100 px tall is "only" 0.4 Mpx, but it probably doesn't need to be any bigger. (Yes, I'm aware of Jeffrey Friedl's plugin. He wants this built into LR4, too. )
We don't even get one new rule having to do with geoencoding. Just off the top of my head, I'd kind of like to have a Smart Collection that found photos taken within 100 feet of my home's lat/long and didn't contain the keyword "home". I have many such Smart Collections in a Collection Set called "Warnings", each of which automatically checks my photos for something that I often forget.
You can't reorder rules or move them into or out of groups. I have Smart Collections with a dozen or so rules, and some with logic nested three levels. When assembling such complex little beasts, it isn't always clear while building it what logic order will give the desired result. You have to iterate, and that often means taking a perfectly good rule and moving it somewhere else. Lacking the ability to reorganize the existing rules, that means creating a new "Rating" rule, changing its type to match, cut-and-pasting the match criteria [if text] and deleting the old rule. Pfagh.
That's enough for now.

Ooops, found one new Smart Collection rule: "Metadata Status". One. Want more.

LR4 Beta Crash in 64bit

When I check the "Remove Chromatic Abberation" box when in 2010 process the whole thing dies immediately. If I first update the image's process it works well.
Is this well documented?

LR4 Beta crashes when accessing DNG files

I am experiencing problems using 64 bit Win 7 and LR4. LR4 seems to crash every time I try to "DEVELOP" a dng format image that was created (imported from Raw) with LR3. I am not having the problem with the CR2 or JPG images although my processing speed seems extremely slow. The images were originally created with a Canon 7D or a Canon G12.

It is my understanding that there is a known bug opening DNG files that have previously been developed under PV2010. The bug seems to cause a crash when they are first accessed in the Develop Module. Try fresh images from the camera for testing purposes and see if you get the same crash. You shouldn't, and this will allow you to test the new features and provide feedback.

Uninstall LR4 Beta/installing LR 3

Can someone please advise me on the best way to uninstall LR 4 Beta. As usual, I can drag the application to the Trash but what about any related components? I need to install LR 3 on this Macbook Pro and not sure what will happen to the LR 4 beta if I do so without uninstalling it. I just want to use this machine for working on projects using LR 3 and not beta testing. FYI, I'm thankfully still running 10.7.2 Thanks!!

The other thing that would be shared are any presets that you created:

Camera Raw cache would also have been shared, but if you're switching to 3.6 (as opposed to an earlier 3.x), I wouldn't touch that. It just holds partially processed raw data, which is the same regardless of 3.6 or 4.0beta.

LR4 Beta...another problem with using Lens Correction

Not sure if it's me or the beta. I'm trying to do a lens correction on a file that was edited in CS5. The photos were taken in 2009/10. They are importing as Process 2012.
I'm using the Lens Correction in manual. About 15 seconds after I start using the sliders, my LR stops working and I have to close the program (white outs the screen with the note saying the program has to be closed).
I do know there can be problems with a beat so I wanted to post this problem in case it is a bug in the system.

I have the same probem if I try to push the scale slider down below about 87%. It is quite annoying when it keeps happening on the same photo. It's not something I use a lot but it can be necessary with tall buildings when the correction pushes the top out of the frame.

LR4 Beta-won't install on my Mac (Running OSX Lion 10.7.2)

File download completed, install initiated after all the steps and acknowledgements...Then it comes up with a "The intallation failed." message. Won't produce an error code. Anybody else have this problem?

Feature requests for LR4 beta from a wedding photographer

I would love to see some more auto white balance algorithms. There are many other algorithms that do an outstanding job that could be implemented to speed up workflow for busy photographers for when the lightroom autobalance doesn't work. Some of these include: i2e (colour science), perfectly clear, and xe847.
These 3 algorithms also apply an auto-toning feature which, when the Lightroom version doesn't work, these might give excellent results quickly. Photoperfect is a program that implements these 3 technologies into its interface and is excellent for quickly tweaking jpegs and tiffs. I would love to see this same capability married to Lightroom's excellent raw conversion engine and outstanding new highlight and shadow sliders.
A skin-tone white balance would be most welcome. Silkypix has this feature. When there is no neutral coloured object, you can click on a skin-tone and this will often white balance the image correctly.
More profiles would be welcome. To use Silkypix 5 Pro as an example again, it has 6 portrait profiles--these are most useful for achieving the perfect look for your photograph. Some are good for single light sources, while others excel at providing pleasing colour under mixed light sources.
Sliders to fine tune noise reduction based on tone (ie. shadow, midtone, and highlight) would truly make Lightroom's noise reduction the gold standard.

As these requests may not make the final release, and we wouldn't want the request to get lost in beta land, might I suggest adding it as a suggestion on the Feature Request forum http://feedback.photoshop.com/photoshop_family where it can easily be tracked? If you post the link to your request here, others can also vote on your request. You may even find a few of them already requested over there, so you could add your vote.

LR4 Beta Crash on Exit

LR4 for Windows 64-bit crashes on exit and fails to close. I have to manually kill the program in Task Manager. This has occurred each time I exit by clicking on "close window." It does not happen if I close from the menu.

LR4 beta feedback: Spell checker

This is a small thing, but wish it was in Lightroom. A spell checker would help avoid mistakes in typing titles, captions and tags, etc.

Bug? LR4 beta freezes when loading the first image

I installed LR4b a couple of days ago and imported a folder of pictures (copied them). Tonight, I was working on files in LR3 with my standard workflow, including an image retouched in Photoshop CS5 that was managed by LR3, thus reloaded in my catalog no problem.
I wanted to try the soft rpoofing part of LR4. I quit LR3. Start LR4 and then it loads, with the welcome screen, and them freezes as it was creating the preview of the last image I was working on. It was in the development module. I had to force quit (MacBook Pro with Lion, latest update). 8Gb ram.
I restarted the Mac, then went directly to LR4b . It started fine, ask me if I wanted to help compile info, said yes, filled the 5 or 6 questions, and then it went back to LR4. I was able to go back to the library (it still had the same picture loaded) but then it froze again. Had to force quit again.
Just so that you know... 8¬)

I'm not sure what's going on, but I'm having a similar yet different issue with slideshow images. I have a full screen slideshow on a tablet site with 2 slides in it, but one of them shows up white/blank in preview. I've ensured both images are in the layers and assets and I've deleted the slideshow and started from scratch twice already. What's interesting is that if I move the images' order within the slideshow widget in the layers panel, I can see either one, but not both in rotation in the slideshow. I just did this same slideshow for the mobile version and that works fine, so I'm stumped.
