Tethering a blackberry pearl as a modem....?

Hello everyone. I just got a blackberry pearl 8100 from t-mobile and have been trying for three days to tether it as a modem with no luck. I was on the phone with a t-mo rep for an hour and he couldn't help me. I think since he didn't have updated info for leopard.
Here is what I have done.
- I downloaded the updated leopard modem script
- I set up the bluetooth device selecting research in motion for vendor and blackberry 8100 for model.
- I left user name and password blank and put "wap.voicestream.com" for phone number.
- After that was finished I went to the network page, entered wap.voicestream.com in the phone number field and guest / guest for user name and password.
Now the first time i tried to connect, it actually did, or at least it said it did. I was shown as connected and had perceived data flow however web pages would not open. When i went to a webpage in safari it did not give me the "not connected to the internet" message, however the progress bar wouldn't move, ichat wouldn't sign on, etc.
I don't know what is going on. I mean it says it's connected. is there a reason why the internet won't work?

I just got my Blackberry 8700c to connect as well.
Running Leopard on a MacBook Pro
Steps
Bluetooth System Preferences
- Pair blackberry - Forgot exactly how to do this, but pair it first
- Highlight the phone entry in the list and click on the Advanced icon at the bottom (looks like a cog) Select Configure this device
- Say yes to Access the Internet with your phone's data connection
- I selected Vendor - Other, then the Blackberry 8100 file (I downloaded this file from somewhere else. It's just a text file. Download it and put it in the Macintosh HD/Library/Modem Scripts folder before doing these steps.
- Username and password are blank
- Phone Number is wap.cingular
- Continue and close
Now go to
Network System Preferences
- Select Bluetooth in the list
- Config is default
- Telephone number is wap.cingular
- Username is guest
- Password is guest
- In the advanced area
- Modem tab
- Vendor is other
- Model is Blackberry 8100 (just like above)
0ther - Ignore dial tone
DNS blank
WINS blank
Proxies blank
PPP - Configuration - I DO NOT have Send PP echo packets checked.
Good luck

  • Blackberry Pearl as a modem on the mac

    Hi-
I guess this is more of a pearl question...but here goes. My husband was able to use our Blackberry Pearl 8100 on his pc. Of course, the directions T-mobile provided for mac were out of date. I found these on another site: http://www.askdavetaylor.com/blackberrypearl_as_bluetooth_modem_withmac.html
The mac provides a code for the blackberry, but the mac is looking for a code from the blackberry. I changed the settings on the phone to always accept and I still have this issue.
Does anyone have experience with this? I'm on OS X 10.4.11 on my macbook and running v4.2.1.107 on the pearl.
    Thanks!

You need to setup the Blackberry with the Mac's Bluetooth so they handshake. Start with Set up Bluetooth device in the Bluetooth menu.

  • Tethering blackberry Pearl 9105 to PC running Windows 7 - error message that " the specified port is not open "

I am trying to tether my Blackberry Pearl to my PC using Blackberry Desktop Manager.  The phone is recognised and connected. I choose the Vodaphone Contract connection profile but keep getting a message that "the specified port is not open".  The RIM virtual modem ports used are COM3 and COM4 and my modem is configurred as COM 3 ,
Is there a port conflict with something on my PC ? or something that I can do to force a port open ?

    Hi Don,
I have seen this issue fixed for some users by modifying the following registry key:
The key is "HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management" MoveImages
Set the key to 1 instead of 0 then reboot the machine.
In case you still face the issue try the following registry key change:
The only thing you have to do is rename the following key at the REGEDIT, and everything will be fine !!
    BEFORE:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Image File Execution Options\iexplore.exe
    AFTER:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Image File Execution Options\iexplore.old
Note: Please take a backup of the registry before attempting this change.
    Regards,
    Rave

  • Blackberry Pearl 8100 as a modem

I have a Blackberry Pearl (8100) with AT&T and am using AT&T as my ISP. How do I use the phone as a Bluetooth modem with my MacBook? The salesperson at the apple store said I needed an External USB Modem. I can pair the phone with the MacBook, no problem, but it doesn't seem to connect to my ISP.

Find the 1st occurence of "Blackberry" on this page...
    http://www.fibble.org/archives/000508.html
    Basically, get this Modem Script...

Hello everyone! I'm currently trying to use my Blackberry Pearl 8130 as a modem, but having issues. I'm running a Macbook - OS-X 10.5.8 with Sprint as my carrier with everything plan. I have the ability to run as modem via bluetooth or through data cable but for some reason can't get either of them to work.
    Does anyone have an answer?
    Thanks!

  • Bluetooth internet setup for mac using my blackberry pearl

I have a blackberry pearl with AT&T. I have it set up with my bluetooth for file sharing. I am trying to set up an internet connection with my phone through blue tooth. When I get to the final step I put down all the right information for the telephone and account name and password. I cant find the blackberry modem in my modem list though so I dont know which modem to use.
Please let me know if anyone has had this problem or has a pearl set up right.

I have certain internet pages that refuse to display correctly in Safari or Firefox. Is it possible to download Internet Explorer to my MacBook?
Two things about IE for Mac:
    1. It does not use the same rendering engine as IE for Windows. IE for Mac's rendering engine is currently obsolete...on both platforms.
    2. If your pages need to display with a feature like ActiveX which is Windows only, IE for Mac doesn't have that.
So even if you do get IE for Mac, it might not solve your problem. If the problem is related to the rendering engine or something like ActiveX, changing the UserAgent won't solve the problem either. Won't hurt to try, though.
The most reliable way to solve your problem is to run Windows on your Mac Book through Boot Camp, VMWare Fusion, or Parallels Desktop, and run Internet Explorer for Windows on that. I don't know if it's worth doing for one presentation, but if you do this all the time it might be worth it and if you have enough RAM. At least all you need for Boot Camp is a copy of Windows.

lalitive, please don't ask vague questions like this. There are too many features to list here and you certainly know how to use google.com for a search, don't you?
Likewise, there are various models of the Pearl. Which as you asking about?

  • Trouble sending files via bluetooth from my powerbook to Blackberry Pearl

I didn't know who else to check first. So I'm taking a chance here. Over the weekend I made the big step of purchasing a Blackberry Pearl 8100. I was looking forward to trying the bluetooth feature. So I paired my phone with my Powerbook G4. Everything good there. I did a test by sending a photo from the phone to the computer. No problem there. Then I wanted to send a backdrop from my pb to my Blackberry. Problem: the computer displays" Device does not have the necessary services." I'm trying to figure out if this a Blackberry or an apple problem. At this point I'm stumped. Before I check with Blackberry I would love to find out if anyone who has a Blackberry Pearl is or had this problem.
    Thanx!

so, i did a little more digging with regards to this problem and found from this forum the answer

  • Blackberry Pearl- Why it's the worst phone ever made

Here's why I think the Blackberry Pearl is the worst phone ever made.
    1. I can't get photo's off of it. My G1 takes a few seconds. I've worked with this Pear for hours upon hours cannot get my photo's off of it. The Desktop manager really bites too no help there. I really dislike this phone. The software just as bad. I guess they were on the move when Desktop manager was getting written.
    2. The phone on occasions would lock on letters instead of numbers. There wasn't an intuitive way to get it unlocked. I found it more intuitive to get a my return from the IRS than it was to get the phone back to dialing numbers.
I'm having my kids dress up as a Blackberry Pearl for Halloween. I'm going to make a Halloween Movie Freddy Kruger attacks people with Blackberry Pearl the topper scene features unsuspecting Pearl user getting tied up and has them attempt to copy their photos off to a PC and the video gets put on Youtube for Christmas.
    Very unsatisfied with your product.
    Don Quixote

I want to join the fun here and list all the different reasons why I'm very unsatisfied with this phone.
The actual phone part of this phone is pretty slow.  It accepts a phone number almost 3 times slower than I can type it in.  Even typing a name on their handy search bar takes forever to get a result.  If I type to fast, it just ignores a couple of my numbers so I have to delete and retype, at the same super slow pace.  I'm guessing that it searches all sorts of contact and history lists to give me cool suggestions, and that's what makes it so slow.  Either way, it irritates me to no end that the basic reason I have this thing is slow as dirt.
All 3rd Party and Blackberry apps require the Blackberry data service.  Even though there's WIFI on this phone, you simply can't connect to anything except the Browser (and even the Browser requires some setting changes to bypass the upsell screen).  This phone CAN do 3rd party services and other applications without the Blackberry data service, but they just don't allow you to.
Sometimes my phone just turns off.  I don't normally mind the 3 minute boot up process, but when I'm in the middle of something and my phone turns off for no reason, it just compounds my frustration.
The keyboard freezes up all the time.  After a good 1-5 minute "please wait clock", I finally get a message saying there was an error and my input application had to be reset.  Sometimes it doesn't quite reset all the way and I have to pull the battery and again wait for the long boot up process.
Its a little unreliable.  Besides the phone turning off at random and the keyboard freezing, I still have problems other problems.  My bluetooth turns off and sometimes doesn't come back.  Once I had to get a new phone sent to me in order to correct that problem.  Pressing buttons doesn't always get a response, especially the green "call" button.  If the phone is bogged down, it just ignored commands, which is pretty frustrating especially if you press a button and accidently double enter a command that is both the "on" and "off" options.  Also, sometimes the screen fades out (like its suppose to) but doesn't come back when you press keys.  Or the external notifications just don't turn on.  It somestimes just doesn't read my memory card.  The zoom feature on my camera also got stuck.
Other small gripes involve having no caps lock, the SureType never learning from my typing ("Hey" always goes out as "Get"), its overall slowness, the looseness of the back casing, the low quality camera, and so much more.
I don't suggest this phone to anyone.

  • Moving contacts from Blackberry Pearl to Macbook Air

    Hi,
I still have a Blackberry Pearl as my phone but have just upgraded to a Macbook Air as my laptop (from using a PC).
Any advice on how I move my contacts from the Pearl to the Air ?
And will I be able to regularly synch the two (as I did with my old PC)?
    Cheers, Baz

  • Blackberry pearl and music files

I know there's not a way to transfer music files to a Blackberry Pearl from a Mac using Bluetooth, but I was wondering if anyone knows if there is another way to do it? Using the USB cable perhaps? I downloaded PocketMac and I'm using that to sync my iCal, but I'd like to move some music files onto my phone as well. There might not be any way to do this, I'm just curious if it's at all possible. Thanks for any input you may have!
    PowerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I'm not 100% sure if it supports blackberry, but I have been able to transfer music files through a program called bitpim. If you download the software (it's free) and connect your phone, you'll be set to go. Once you're there, go to view-->view filesystem and then click on that icon on the left. It'll show a bunch of folders. Simply drag an mp3 file to the folder called "my mp3" and it will say at the very bottom left corner that it is writing it. It takes forever, but it works.

  • Blackberry Pearl Battery Cover Clip Broken

My pearl took a little fall and now the silver battery clip has broken (with the spring coming out and such).  Can I buy a replacement clip for the battery cover?  Where would I find this?

eBay has TONS of vendors selling these because Blackberry did a VERY POOR engineering job on these.
Just search for "Blackberry Pearl Latch". They SHOULD replace them for free.  It's gotten so bad that T-Mobile sales people are dissuading customers from buying Pearls just because they get so many complaints about the broken latches.  So, head their advice unlike me. I bought one on eBay.  When I saw it I could see why they break so often. It is a tiny, cheaply made and fragile part.  I broke the replacement trying to get it installed.  So, if anybody tries to replace one themselves be very careful with the 3 tiny little pins on the latch.
Blackberry should be paying for these to be repaired.

Hi people, not sure if anybody can help however I have a Blackberry Pearl 9105 and for the past 2 weeks its keeps turning itself off and on and also keeps saying 'searching for network' at random times.  I therefore thought it may require a new battery so brought a new battery - was fine for 5 hrs and then started doing it again!
Any ideas on what it could be please...............it is quite old now and am due an upgrade at the end of August which is so annoying.  Vodafone won't let me upgrade early either.  If no-one knows am going into a vodafone store on Saturday to see of they can test it!

    Hey zmblake,
Welcome to the BlackBerry® Support Community Forums.
I would suggest to do a clean reload of the BlackBerry® device software as shown here: http://btsc.webapps.blackberry.com/btsc/KB11320, please test before restoring any data to the device.
If this resolves the issue do a selective restore of essential data (Address Book, Calendar, Task, Memos, BBM contacts etc.)
