Tethering Canon 1D X

I have been attempting to tether via USB my Canon 1D X to my 13" MacBook Air (OS 10.7.5) and Aperture 3.4.3 and finding no success. I've called Canon Professional Services, and with their help have determined that the computer can see the camera in Image Capture. Further, I set Aperture as the default application to open when the camera connects; however, when I select File/Tether/Start Session and the tether HUD opens, it tells me that no camera is detected.
Just to clarify, I have no trouble shooting tethered with my Canon 5D Mark II.
Does anyone know the fix for this?

Thanks. You are absolutely right. With Highlight Tone Priority, the RAW files after they are processes by Aperture are at least 1 stop under-exposed. On import before processing they appear fine. When I import both JPEG and RAW at the same time without Highlight Tone Priority turned on in camera, both RAW and JPEG appear to have the same exposure before and after processing, although the RAW is more FLAT and looks a little under-exposed, but I think that is the difference you would expect between the JPEG processing in Camera and Aperture.
APPLE PLEASE FIX THIS AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. THIS REMINDS ME OF THE RECENT ERROR WHERE PICTURES EDITED IN NIK OR OTHER EXTERNAL EDITORS DID NOT RENDER CORRECTLY IN APERTURE. THESE TYPES OF RANDOM ERRORS ARE GETTING REAL OLD. GET IT TOGETHER OR JUST ANNOUNCE THAT YOU ARE NOT FOCUSED ON PROFESSIONAL SOFTWARE ANYMORE.

  • Camera wont capture when Tethering Canon T5i in Lightroom 4.4. Tried with and without card.

I just unboxed a Canon T5i (700D). I've been shooting with a T2i for the past three years tethered to LR4 with no problem. Now with the T5i, i connect the camera, set up a new tether session and LR detects the camera in the pop up bar, but the sections for Shutter Speed, Aperture, and ISO are blank. The capture button is able to be clicked, but the camera does not respond. When the shutter on the camera is pressed, also no response. I have tried this with and without the SD card. I have used three usb cable and two different computers. I have checked for updates and my firmware is current. The camera is set to manual mode in the on position NOT the video position and I am tethering to a Windows 7 computer. Please help!

You will need LR5 for that camera to be supported for direct tethered capture.  Or you can use the LR "Watched Folder" feature and use the EOS Utility or other tethering software packages.  Here is a list of some options - http://www.tethertools.com/plugging-in/software/

  • Tethering Canon 5D MkIII w/10.8

I'm curious to know if anyone has managed to tether their Canon 5D MkIII to a computer running OSX 10.8 Mountain Lion?  The latest version of Aperture claims to support this but I'd rather not buy the software before I know it works.  Apple also no longer offers a trial version of Aperture.  For the record, at this date no other software supports this such as EOS Utility, Lightroom, Capture One, or DSLR Assistant.

That is why I use the 5D3, it takes both CF and SD cards. When using the eyefi card I save RAW to the CF card and the lowest res jpeg to the SD (eyefi) card. With the 5D3 the RAW files can be 27-30MB in size while the jpeg are aroung 750KB. Wireless transfer of the RAW files is therefore much slower with the eyefi card.
With the eyefi card you set up which networks it will attach to. You can setup private networks, Direct mode and what to do with Public Hotspots.
I have it set to work on my home network of course and also on an ad-hoc network. I use a Macbook air and when away or on location I setup the macbook to create an ad-hoc network called "stevesmacbook" or similar and I have already set the eyefi card up to "Attach' to this network when it doesn't find my home network.I think this is using the direct mode.
You also need to specify on the eyefi card where it will save/ send the files to. I have a portable 500GB hard drive that plugs into the Macbook and on that I have a folder called "Today" and this is the folder I specify on the eyefi card. I got caught out a couple of times by creating a new folder on the HDD to save the current photos to and set this folder up as the monitored folder for aperture etc and then couldn't work out why the photos were not showing until I remembered that the eyefi card was sending them to a different folder!
I use Aperture Hot Folder to also monitor that folder and when I run Aperture I set up a new project that uses the same folder.
As I shoot I get a full RAW file saved to the CF card and the S3 jpeg to the SD eyefi card that then automatically sends it wirelessly to the "Today" folder on the HDD connected to the Macbook Air. Aperture Hot Folder sees that a new photo has appeared and shows it in Aperture. The first file when you start up, or after you have had a break for a while, is slow to appear but then the subsequent photos pop up pretty quickly. I guess you would have to test for yourself to see if it is fast enough for your requirements. It probably would be OK for my school shoots but, they are usually pretty hectic so I just didn't want to add the extra "thing" to think about at this stage. When shooting portraits in my "Studio"  ( some may call it a double garage) I use the eyefi system all the time - With the macbook air connected to an appleTV showing the photos on a 55inch LCD TV!
Once setup, and it isn't as complicated as it probably sounds, it all works automatically and easily.
As I shoot I watch the photos ( or an assistant does for schools) and picks the "Keepers" by giving them a 1 star rating in Aperture and we also put the persons name in the Title field of the metadata for the choosen photos.
When the shoot is finished I open aperture and look at the jpeg files and filter to only show the "Keepers" I then plug the CF card into a card reader on the mac and import them using the "Matching RAW" option and the "current filter" option. Aperture then imports only the RAW files that match the Keeper photos and the RAW files have the metadata matched. I then select to view the Raw files and away I can go with post and printing.
It all sounds complicated but isn't really. (Thinking of maybe doing a youtube video to show the setting up and use - which would be easier to follow).
BTW - As I said before I have had no trouble shooting tethered into Aperture with the 5D3 before or after Mountain Lion and the issue with Lightroom was that Adobe hadn't updated to include tethered shooting for the 5D3 until they released 4.2. Now they have I can shoot tethered direct to Lightroom. It hasn't been a Mountain Lion issue for me at all.
    Hope this helps

  • Tethered Canon 5d 64 bit workaround.

I have been really disappointed with the lack of 64 bit tethered support for the Canon 5d Mark 2.
So much so I decided to evaluate Capture One .. and it worked!!
What's more interesting is that having installed the Capture One trial Lightroom 3 recognised the 5D Mark 2 which appears to work perfectly.
Interesting eh!!    I wonder why Canon or Adobe can't do what Phase One have done.

This is not true for the 5D Mk II, but for 5D (see here):
5D, 1D Mark II, 1Ds Mark II, EOS 350D (Rebel XT/EOS Kiss Digital N) on
Windows require a driver downloaded from Canon. This driver is not
available for 64-bit versions of Windows.
I'm running tethered on Win7 64-Bit with a 5D Mk II without any other (besides Canon) software/drivers installed. But my 1Ds Mk II wont work in Win7 64-Bit :-(

  • Camera Showing "Busy" When Tethering (Canon Rebel XT)

    Hi Everyone,
I'm new to tethering and such, but I thought I would give it a go. The problem I seem to be having is that the camera is flashing "Busy" on the display and wont let me take any photos. I am trying to tether my Canon Rebel XT to Aperture 3.1 on my Mac Pro running 10.6.4. The firmware version on the camera seems to be 1.0.2 (although I have no idea how to update that should that be the issue).
Any help would be great! Thanks!
    Phil

Change your communication settings within the camera to normal (not PTP). To access the settings from the camera itself, select Menu and then tab along until you see communications, then select normal from the options.

  • Tethering Canon

    Nope.
In a way this is kinda funny. Damned program won't connect to my camera, but every time I try to do an import my scanner gets top preference. It doesn't tether (import files) from there either.

Some may suggest using a "hot folder action" (automator) or Canon's DPP/Utility.
I can assure you both are lousy.
The more reliable of the two is Canon's software but it's slow, although not as slow as using the automator "Hot Folder".
I can't recommend either of the above.
I am waiting to see if anyone has a better solution.

  • Having a difficult time tethering Canon 6D to OS X 10.9.1 laptop.

For a short time the tethering worked, but now it shows an error message that it cannot connect to camera.  Any thoughts?

The System Management Controller may not have much to do
with the issue found in copying a picture into Pages from Mail.
After upgrading to Mavericks, did you check for other system
update or upgrades in addition? Also, by now the Mavericks
OS X 10.9.2 with security fix and updates has been out, too.
Software Update should be able to show available items.
If there were any other updates to Mail or Pages, they may
(or not) be of some help, of that I am not certain.
Had you tried to use Disk Utility's 'repair disk permissions'
on the Macintosh HDD, in D.U's first aid section?
There may be some ideas on the topic in the Help viewer, in
either Pages help, or Mail help, in your system; it will access
Apple Support database as well as a help files in the Mac OS.
Perhaps someone else with more immediate experience in
your stated issue will see this and enter the discussion.
Maybe there is another way to add an image from email
into a Pages document? To Import, or export.
You could also attempt to sort out similar issues online via
a search in google or yahoo (use 'Mac OS X' first in search)
and see what comes up, with usual modifiers to look deeper.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Tethering canon 300d

How can I connect a canon 300d to aperture?

This may be a solution which I have yet to fully test:
    Apple Script:
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/automator/aperturehotfolder.html
Canon EOS Utility 2.5.1 Updater for Mac OS X:
    http://www.canon.com.au/products/cameras/digital_slr/eos300d.aspx
For the updater to work you will need the origional Canon EOS Digital Solution Disk that came with the camera.
Notwithstanding that this might be a solution the Tether features in Aperture working with the 300D would have been a more elegant solution.

  • Tethered capture window problem in LR3

Suddenly, images captured shooting tethered (Canon 1DS MkII, Lightroom 3.2) don't appear automatically in my viewing window; I have to click on each thumbnail. Have shot tethered with LR3 since it was available. Auto advance is checked, still no luck. Have upgraded to 3.3 and the problem lives on. Suggestions?

I can see how that can be confusing. Here's the full list of supported cameras for tethering.  http://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom/kb/tethered-camera-support-lightroom-4.html
Long story short, Adobe use the camera manufacturer's SDK, so support is usually waiting on Canon.  They've recently updated their SDK but there are some crashes which they have yet to fix, before Adobe can do too much, so we don't have an idea on date yet, sorry.

  • Unable to shoot tethered with a Canon 70D

I am trying to practice shooting tethered for an upcoming shoot. I am unable to get Lightroom and my Canon 70D to connect. I receive the dialog box shown below several seconds after attempting to connect. I went through all the steps on the "Troubleshooting tethered capture in Lightroom" and can shoot tethered using Canon's software. I am using Lightroom 5.3 on a MacBookPro 13 inch with 16 gb ram running system 10.9.1

Lightroom does not currently support tethering on the 70D.

  • Trouble tethering my Canon 1Ds mk II with Lightroom 4.1 on Mac OSX 10.6.8.

I had to get a Mac just to be able to use tethered shooting with my brand new 1Ds mk III (yes, brand new after 8 years not being used by it's previous owner, had 200 exposures on it)
Windows XP was not an option and Canon support told me that they never had any intentions towards supporting the Camera on Win Vista or Win 7 (even though these OSs were released when the camera was still the top end of their product line on the market!)
Long story short, I researched compatibility for Lightroom and found out, that 4.1 would be the last to support the 1Ds mk II. (Can somebody confirm that?!)
I bought LR 4 last year and am waiting for LR6 with my Win machine, so I installed LR 4 on the mac and denied any updates to be able to use my Camera..
The mac runs OSX 10.6.8, which is, to my knowledge, the last version to support the 1Ds mk II and it's EOS utility, etc. (How about that one?)
Sure, I should've bought the 1Ds mk III, considering all the money I invested just to be able to properly use the 1Ds mk II.. but that's not the issue here and if I should happen to have any success with my work, I will upgrade to a used 1Dx in a few years.
    To my problem at hand:
I installed LR4.1 on my mac and set up tethered shooting with the Camera connected to the mac. (It works fine with EOS utility too)
Camera with its settings is recognized by the tool and can be set off remotely.
Pictures are displayed and develop preset is applied.
However, sometimes it works just fine but then the camera stops taking pictures (Exposure is made, with AF, Shutter, etc. working fine, but pictures aren't saved to CF card nor transferred to Lightroom) Also, sometimes the camera isn't recognized anymore.. This happened repeatedly within 10 to 20 exposures, so not a rare issue here!
When I turn the camera off and back on, it sometimes does and sometimes doesn't work again..
same goes for the firewire cable that sometimes does and sometimes doesn't reset the tool when I unplug it.
I also sometimes noticed the CF-card LED continuously indicating whatever.. had to remove the CF card to stop it from doing that.
    In short:
What could be the problem with my setup and is there an easy way around that?
I really depend on this feature working properly.
    Your help is really appreciated
    Mischa

My camera is a 1Ds mk II..
and for that one it says
All versions tested. All versions tested. Supported only through Lightroom 4.1.
    however, it also says
Windows XP, Vista, 7; Mac OS X 10.5 or 10.6
which is plain wrong, because Canon never supported any drivers for Windows Vista or Win 7, not to speak of XP 64bit. (You cannot connect the camera via firewire, without the device drivers!)

  • When tethered to LR3 will a Canon 30D also capture to the CF card ?*

The question is in the header

There are options in the EOS Utility Preferences for 'Save also on the camera's memory card'  and 'Auto Power Off' disable to prevent losing your camera's USB connection. These only work when the EOS Utility is doing the tethered image capture. My Canon 600D isn't supported yet in LR for tethering, so don't feel so bad. I just tried a procedure at the below link using LR's 'Auto Import' function. It works well once you have everything setup properly.
    http://evankafka.com/sensorsensibility/tethered-capture/
Scroll down to the section titled 'How to shoot with EOS Utility and LR' for details. The nice part about this is you have the option to review and set most of your camera's controls onscreen. You can also use 'Live Preview' mode available on the newer DSLRs like the Canon 600D. It would be nice if Adobe could incorporate live view and at least some camera controls for the Canon and Nikon DSLRs already supported for tethered capture. For now this procedure is a viable solution.

  • Canon 7D Mark II fails to connect with LR 5.7 for tethered shoot.

Canon 7D2 fails to connect with LR 5.7 for tethered shoot.
The camera connection does work with Canon EOS Utility.
LR sees the camera but fails to establish and maintain connection.  See small video clip to view the camera and computer behaviour while attempting to connect.
    https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/28457054/7D2%20tethered%20test.m4v
I also have the Canon 5D3 and have no issues connecting with various software (EOS Utility, LR, Helicon Remote) on that computer.  I have a MacBookPro mid-2009 running OS X 10.8.5.  Lightroom, Camera Raw and EOS Utility are up to date, same goes for the 7D2 firmware.

It usually takes many months and perhaps more than one version of LR before tethering is supported after raws are supported.  The first hurdle is for the camera manufacturer to release a new SDK with the camera supported, so Adobe can’t have tethering ready when raw support is because a camera isn’t added until after it is announced.  Canon has added the 7D.2 to their SDK about two weeks after the camera was available, so the ball is in Adobe’s court:

  • NEED to find plug in for Canon 5D for tethered shooting on Lightroom 5.. can someone send me the link or know where to find it..

Is there anybody who can help please??

If you can find another application to tether your 5D that will work with your current operating system--I suspect that is the issue with Canon (and therefore Adobe and some other tethering vendors like CamRanger) not supporting it, anymore, then you can set up an auto-import folder in LR and have that other tethering product put the photos into that folder and LR will import them as you're shooting.  It's not as slick as having it built-in to LR but it is better than having to wait until you're done shooting to start importing.
