Tethering - Ethernet Adapter doesn't show up on Mac in System Preferences

Hi. When I to connect my iPhone 3G to a MacBook Air I have no "Ethernet Adapter (X)" in the Network section of System Preferences. It doesn't auto detect anything, I can't find it under the "+" button.
On another Mac it works. The problem seems to the with this MacBook Air. Seems to be a USB detection problem. It is as if the iPhone is not seen on USB as an Ethernet Adapter.
I have searched a lot on the forums and there is no answer. Can you help?

Hello. I got a similar issue. My iTunes 9 and my iPhone 3GS 3.1 works fine, they sync and so on. I got tethering service from my carrier and it worked fine using USB and Bluetooth with my MacBook. I don't know what happened but now it works only with Bluetooth. The ethernet adapter ˜Ethernet Adapter (enX)" - as shown in http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2756 - is missing.
I can't find a way to recreate that iPhone adapter. When I try to tether thru USB nothing happens (no blue bar in iPhone), no adapter is recognized/created. When I tether thru Bluetooth everything works fine.
Does anyone know how to reset iPhone ethernet config in Mac OS? Thank you.

Where is the show popup from network on System Preferences?
Was checking Airport support for PPPoE disconnected message which directd me to Show Popup on network in System preferences and I had 1 option.  Show all.
Would love additional info on why I keep getting this message - Could not find a PPPoE server.  Which interrupts wifi service to Network.

PPPoE is a protocol used to authenticate a user prior to gaining Internet access used by certain ISPs. Typically it is used for DSL Internet service. PPPoE would be configured on the device that is directly connected to the DSL modem. This could be a router or computer.
Do you currently have or previously had DSL Internet service? What is the make & model of the device that you currently have the AirPort Extreme base station connected to by Ethernet? Which exact model of the Extreme do you have?

  • Thunderbolt to Ethernet Adapter doesn't work with Retina MacBook Pro

I can't seem to connect to Ethernet with my Retina MacBook Pro. I bought an adapter and when I plugged it in, the network setup assistant showed that I was connected to the internet but my web browsers (Safari, Firefox and Chrome) couldn't connect, nor could any other programs (like Mail). The error message said that my computer was not connected to the internet, which did not match what Network Diagnositcs said. After a phone call with Apple Support, I had a replacement adapter mailed to me. With the new adapter, my computer now says that it is connected to the internet and I even have an IP address, but programs still can't connect and I get an error message saying the DNS lookup failed. This happens even when I manually enter the DNS server. I have already tried running the Thunderbolt software update 1.2.1 as well as the recent Thunderbolt firmware update, but the installer says they are not compatible with my computer. The problem occurs for both Thunderbolt ports. Is anyone else having this issue? I have no problem connecting to WiFi, so my temporary work around is using internet sharing on my old MacBook, which can connect to the ethernet connection in my apartment with no problems.

Hmm. Well I tried rebooting with wifi off but that didn't fix things for me. Would you mind sharing what your System Information says under Thunderbolt? This is what mine looks like:

  • Usb to Ethernet  adapter doesn't work? AX88772B

I don't know how to make a connection with Internet with RJ-45 cable with the usb adapter.
    I have MBA. Lion 10.7.5
Now I need to connect MBA by RJ-45 cable with usb adapter (asus AX88772B)

I also did download drivers from here http://www.asix.com.tw/products.php?op=pItemdetail&PItemID=105;71;101&PLine=71
I read the instruction, and I've done 3 steps on the page 4 exept these one's:
    (4)  Set the permission access mode of Apple’s default driver.
    (5)  Update the access and modification times of ASIX’s AX88772B/772A/760/772 or AX88178 driver.

  • Thunderbolt Gigabit Ethernet Adapter doesn't work

Just plugged in a Thunderbolt Gigabit Ethernet Adapter into MacBook Pro 15" 2.7GHz i7, OS 10.7.4
It is recognized correctly by System Profiler, but not in System Preferences - the Adapter just isn't shown in Network.
    What is still needed?
    Thanks for Answers!

    Got this update:
All Thunderbolt-equipped Mac computers support this adapter. This adapter requires OS X Lion v10.7.4 or later. Thunderbolt-equipped Macs released prior to June, 2012, require the installation of Thunderbolt Software Update 1.2.1 to use this adapter.

  • Built-In Ethernet Port Doesn't Show Up In The Network Preference Pane

My ethernet port no longer shows up in the Network preferences pane under Network Status. The status Airport and the Internal Modem are still displayed though. Plugging in an ethernet cable causes my machine to crash; sometimes I get a message that I need to hold down the power button to reboot, and other times command line-like text is displayed on top of whatever was on screen.
The only change I've made to my system since last using a wired connection was installing Security Update 2006-001 on March 1st and OS X Update 10.4.5 on February 14th. After running the 10.4.5 updater, my machine initially refused to reboot. On the first attempt, it played the start up chime, but the screen remained black. The second time, the Apple logo appeared, but the spinning pinwheel never did. The third attempt was successful and my system appeared to be functioning normally.
How do I get my ethernet port to work again?

Does "Built-in Ethernet" show up as a choice in the 'Show:" popup? If so, is it configured as you would expect? For instance, if "TCP/IP" is set to use DHCP, do you have an IP address, subnet mask, etc.? There is an "off" setting for TCP/IP; make sure that hasn't been selected somehow.
There is also an "Assist Me" button that will let you launch the diagnostics app. Does this also crash the Mac? If not, what are the results of its tests?
Also, you may want to do a permissions repair with Disk Utility if you haven't done this since applying the updates.
If you still get crashes, there may be a conflict with a log-in item, particularly if you have any third party ones. (Check that in the "Accounts" pref.) One way to diagnose things like that is by creating a new test account & logging into it. If the problems go away, you can assume a user cache, .plist, or login item is the problem.
If none of this turns up anything, you may need to reinstall the OS. Short of that, you can try downloading the 10.4.5 combo update & running it. It replaces more components than the "delta" update so it just might do the trick. Besides, if you end up having to reinstall the OS, having the combo version handy will save you the time of downloading & installing any incremental updates to get back to 10.4.5.
As always, backup all important files before applying any updates.
    Good luck!

  • Ethernet option doesn't show up in internet sharing.

I'm trying to set up a network via the ethernet port on my iBook G4. I found out some of how to do this, but I can't get past what is usually step two of the tutorials. When I go to System Preferences>Sharing>Internet Sharing and I go to check the "Ethernet" box, it isn't there! Does anyone know how to fix this?

I am guessing that because you are using a USB internet connection, that Sharing thinks you are getting your internet via your ethernet device, so it does not include that device in the list.
My Verizon DSL modem comes with an ethernet port (It might have USB, but I ignore that). I then have that ethernet port plugged into a home WiFi base station which then redistributes my internet connection to all the other systems in my home.
If you have an ethernet option from your Verizon provided broadband modem, then the simple and robust solution is to get an inexpensive home WiFi base station and use that as your home router for your Mac as well as your Xbox.
Now if you want to continue to play with using your Mac as a router, then start with System Preferences -> Network, and see if you have a "Built-in Ethernet"?
Does the fine print under the "Built-in Ethernet" say "Inactive"? If it does then this port has been explicitly disabled. Use the little Gear icon at the bottom of that column and select "Make Service Active".
If you have a "Built-in Ethernet" and it is NOT "Inactive", then you could try duplicating it via the Gear icon at the bottom of the column. Maybe that will give you an Ethernet sharing option.
But again, your life would be so much easier if you put a home router between you and your Verizon internet connection. Besides a home router is also a hardware firewall that does not allow internet bad guys into your home network.

  • CRIO Doesn't Show Up In The Distributed Systems Manager

    All,
Any idea why my cRIO wouldn't show up in the distributed systems manager? I'm running Real Time 3.2.1 and I've already deployed my shared variables. I can see the cRIO through MAX and with my project just fine.
    - Ken

    Hi Ken,
I have a couple of questions/things we can try:
    1.  How are you connected to the cRIO? (Crossover, switch, router with DHCP)
    2.  Are you able to manually add the cRIO by IP Address to My Systems?  (Right-click My systems, select Add Systems..., type in the IP Address and select OK.)
    3.  Are the shared variables hosted on the cRIO?  If not, do you see the Shared Variables in the Distributed System Manager?
    4.  Try enabling CPU Load Monitoring through the cRIO Target Properties in the LabVIEW Project (Right-click cRIO, select Properties, go to Miscellaneous and check Enable CPU Load Monitoring, deploy the settings and reboot the cRIO).
    5.  If you already had Distributed System Manager, does pressing F5 to refresh help?
Finally, I would like to know what version of Distributed System Manager/LabVIEW you are using.

  • Windows HD not showing in starup disk in system preference!!

    Hi,
I install 2 new WD caviar 640 k in my system, one for OSX which i installs with
SuperDuper. And one for my vista 64 ultimate, which i install with Casper cloning
my volume.. Everything seems to be working, except that i don't see the windows HD in Starup Disk in system preferences!! only the OSX. The disk appears in disk utility and i can boot using the option key...
    Any idea?
    Daniel

    Hi!
I finally solved my problem, what i did was erase and create a partition with BootCamp on the new HD, Format and reinstall windows, than i copy my old vista
volume to the new HD.. and every thing is showing where it's suppose to be..
The problem was with the format procedure, in Disk utility when i selected
the windows HD it showed in Partition Map Scheme: MBR and now it shows
GUID PARTITION Table and the volume format is (NTFS) of course.

  • MacBook Pro power adapter doesn't show green light when fully charged

I've had a quick search through the communities and there are a lot of posts about chargers and indicator lights, but I'm not sure I'm really satisfied about my own issue so I thought I'd ask anyway.
Basically, I bought a spare power adapter (genuine Apple 85W MagSafe2) for my new 15" Retina MacBook Pro in a store the other day, to save me lugging my main adapter to and from work all the time.
Using it for the first time made me realise that the adapter I got with my MBP behaves slightly differently re: the LED indicators. The new one from the store shows amber until the MBP is fully charged, then solid green once fully charged. This I believe is perfectly normal.
The charger I got with the MBP shows amber whilst charging, but only shows green very briefly when fully charged and then the indicator goes out completely. OSX (10.8.2) still indicates that it is connected to the power source though, and the battery doesn't drain or anything at this point - it definitely appears to be functioning as expected.
Aside from this, I can determine no real difference between the two adapters in terms of charging speed or general functionality, they both appear fine.
I just wondered if anyone else had ever seen this?
I did reset the MBP's SMC settings too, but it made no difference. I'm inclined to think there isn't an issue with the laptop itself since the new adapter's indicators work exactly as I'd expect, but then again the original adapter seems to function perfectly so I'm wondering if there's just some trivial issue with the green LEDs or something like that.

Really doesn't matter if anyone else has or has not seen something like what you have. Your original adapter is faulty in one way or another and you should take it in to Apple with your rMBP to show them what is happening and Ask Nicely for a new one that works correctly.

So I have a Sony Ericsson T715, which has triangulation geo-tagging for photos, I can see their location through the phone no problem.
However, when I import them via the Bluetooth File Browser to my Mac and import them into iPhoto '09, their location does not show up
Why is this? How should I import them so that this information stays? (Was a reason why I bought this phone.)
I tried looking at the phone/importing through Image Capture, but it doesn't seem to work... keeps randomly opening iPhoto and showing nothing. In Image Capture it shows the photos, but I can't import them - just says it's importing, but does nothing in the end.
