Tethering / Personal Hotspot

No not kinky games but an essential item on a smartphone.....when can we expect these to be provided?   I know about the FCC issue but surely a few palms can be greased to get it through them?

  • How to use iPhone USB tethering / Personal Hotspot without iTunes

I have a corporate laptop so didn't want to install the whole of iTunes to enable USB tethering / Personal Hotspot.
Here's how you can enable USB tethering / Personal Hotspot without installing iTunes.
    1. Download iTunes from https://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
    2. Extract the contents of the downloaded file using winRAR or 7zip. In particular you want the following files:
    For 32 bit systems:
    - AppleApplicationSupport.msi
    - AppleMobileDeviceSupport.msi
    For 64 bit systems:
    - AppleApplicationSupport64.msi
    - AppleMobileDeviceSupport6464.msi
Note: If you don't have either winRAR or 7zip you can do the following instead:
Start the iTunes installation, then on reaching the first screen, the required files will be extracted to your machine, perform a search for one of the files above on your C drive whilst the iTunes installation window is open, it should find them in a temp folder somewhere, you can then copy and paste them somewhere and close the iTunes installation.
    3. Before continuing, ensure your iphone is not connected to the computer. Then, install AppleApplicationSupport.msi (or AppleApplicationSupport64.msi for 64 bit machine)
    4. Install AppleMobileDeviceSupport.msi (or AppleMobileDevice6464.msi)
    5. Restart your computer
    6. After your computer has restarted, enable Personal Hotspot on your iPhone (select USB only option) and plug in your iPhone using the USB cable. Some device drivers will install and then your computer should automatically connect to the iPhone internet connection.

        Hi kveille,
Using the personal hotspot can become tricky as there are three different options available. Based on your details, it sounds like you've been trying the option to connect using WiFi on your computer and iPad. We have the steps needed for iOS 6 to activate and use WiFi so I encourage to use these exact steps to get it to work http://bit.ly/SFLD2b. You will need to check that the MacBook Pro is setup to pick up the network the right way. Check by following http://bit.ly/PJkOWZ. Step 9 demonstrates how to find the network name that you can look for on your computer. Try these steps and keep us posted to the status of the connection.

  • Cisco VPN over a tethered Personal Hotspot on IP4(Airtel)

    Hello everyone
I am having problems connecting to our company Cisco VPN over a tethered or Personal Hotspot connection on my iPhone 4 (Airtel).
When the Hotspot is on, I am able to use the CISCO AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client to connect to the server, However, when I use the Remote Desktop Connection.
    this is the error:
The Mac cannot connect to the Windows-based computer.
    This problem can occur if:
    • The Windows-based computer is not set up to accept remote connections.
    • The Windows-based computer is not turned on.
    • The Mac, or the Windows-based computer is experiencing network problems.
Try connecting to the Windows-based computer again, or contact your administrator.
Has anyone else had these kinds of problems? I have no idea what to try, I am not a VPN/network expert.
If i use an Andriod device to tether the internet connection, I am able to connect to the Cisco server and connect to my work server using the Remote desktop. So i am wondering if this is to do with the way Iphone share internet.
    Any help is really appreciated.

I have noted that all vpn or remote desktop solutions will not work over personal hotspot(ph) seems like the iPhone is blocking some ports. First I thought it was the lack of service announces over the network but it seems even with a direct ip connect you can't share vpn connections.
This limits apps like Air display from working over an iPhone and some other services like standard vpn are out of the question as well. There must be a .plist file somewhere in the iPhone 4 version of the 4.3.2 ios that blocks certain ports when on ph. Would be nice to have a look, but I have no expertise in this.
But  +1 Confirm that vpn are locked.

For the 3GS, your only options are Bluetooth and USB tethering.  Wi-Fi tethering (personal hotspot) requires an iPhone 4 or later.  See http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3574

Phone software is up to date (5.0.1).
    Network settings have been reset.
SIM card has been taken out and put back in.
Phone has been switched off/on again.
Another sim card from virgin works ok (hotspot option is visible and can be turned on/off as required)

Hi, I have iphone 4s and since yesterday my personal hotspot will not work. It's always worked fine in the past and I have a plan with three uk which includes tethering. I've tried everything I can think of including resetting network settings, resetting the phone as a new phone but nothing works. When connected to the pc it shows on the iphone screen '1 connection' but the pc says 'no internet connection' I've spoken to three who say it must be a phone fault. Any help appreciated. :-)

If you have restored as new that pretty well covers software issues
Looks like a trip to an Apple Store and a likely Out of Warranty exchange unit  £159 over the counter
May e consider an upgrade with the money ?

  • IPAD2 ATT Personal Hotspot/Tethering not offered

I just spent three days with ATT pointing out to them that their website stated a Personal Hotspot would be available for the IPAD 2 with the release of 4.3. I directed them to the page that quoted it. It was a press release dated March 10. It shows the prices for Tethering. They are pointing fingers to Apple. I don't believe them! If you want the link I will email it to you. This post won't allow me to cut and paste the link to ATT's Website.
The day before I purchased IPAD2- I also called ATT and Apple to confirm Tethering would be available. Now ATT is denying that it never was in the plans. Apple Care folks are hand tied. They don't quite understand ATT's decision. There are many reasons ATT doesn't want to allow this. I have a grandfathered unlimited data plan on my Iphone 4- If I purchase the tethering for my Iphone 4 - I have to forfeit my unlimited plan- GET THE PICTURE!. The Ipad is capable of tethering. I bought the IPAD2 -3G version for this purpose. Extra 130 dollars out the door.
If you had the same in mind- Let ATT know your frustrations. Thanks for listening

Thank you for your response. Verizon offers tethering/ Hotspot on some of their tablets. I personally demonstrated this before I bought my IPAD2. I understand what IOS4.3 offers on the IPHONE4. The IPAD2 is capable of the same. Apple even admitted it to me via phone conversations. They only sympathized with me after an hour of phone patches between ATT and Apple.
I don't want to tether my I phone. I want to keep it available for other purposes and don't want to destroy my "Grandfathered Unlimited Data Plan". I do want to tether to my laptop. I don't really have an argument- I may have been mislead by what ATT stated. Let me copy this from their Web site. There is no assumption that one already owns an IPhone 4 or is it relevant. The following is a direct quote:
Let me know if this changes your mind? Thank you!

  • HT3574 is there any application that can help my iphone 3GS with personal hotspot or tethering internet?

is there any application that can help my iphone 3GS with personal hotspot or tethering internet?

You don't need anything, as such is built directly into the iOS. Your carrier, however, needs to support such.

  • Tethering and personal hotspot

I have an IPhone 4 bought on Apple store.
On my IPhone there is neither tethering button
nor personal hotspot unger settings, general, network.
So I can't use my IPhone as modem for my laptop.
    Could you gelo me please.?

That setting only appears if your carrier supports personal hotspot. The setting comes from the carrier file installed on your phone. So, does your carrier support personal hotspot?

  • How to block "Personal Hotspot (Tethering)"?

    Hello,
I want to block or deactivate the "personal hotspot" function on iPad or iPhone. We want to disallow the use of this function for all of our users.
I checked the "Apple Configurator" and also our MDM solution. It is not possible to block. Also our phone provider is not able to deactivate this function.
Is it possible to send a "mobileconfig"-File or a "IPCC"-File to the device? Someone has an idea?
    Many Thanks
    Tobias

I thought iOS 7.0 added Personal Hotspot control to the MDM or at least the ability to monitor such.

Please don't shout!   Using all uppercase means shouting on the internet.  If your keyboard is stuck please say so, otherwise people will think you are being obnoxious.
Now the first question is, when you are saying connecting to personal hotspot, have you always been using the iPhone to connect to the internet?   Are you someplace where the only place to connect is available via tethering to the iPhone's celluar network?  Or do you have other options?
